A Message From The PresidentWe were sad to retire the tree consuming version of Connections, but with Katie Sweet, our new Marketing Coordinator, on board and

anxious to bring the newsletter to a new level, we have finally made the move to total electronic. More good news; it will be in color and on time. Look for Connections in your in-box and on our website on the first Monday of every month! And that is not all. Katie has begun to design it to meet your needs. Live links will now be featured in articles and the calendar page. Now it will be easy to navigate directly to a site.

Additionally, we will be offering a limited amount of advertising. The newsletter is for news, but with the loss of our paper inserts this is a way to reduce cost and give you a better opportunity to connect with your fellow members. Again the live link will connect your target audience immediately to your site where you can post your message.

Our dues billing has been very successful. We appreciate the members’ patience in working with us. We have encountered few problems but those have been worked through to everyone’s satisfaction. Thank you.

An additional parking garage in downtown Portsmouth is up for vote in the near future. The Chamber has been asked by Jack Thorsen, the City Council Liason to the Chamber, to help educate the members on the issues that concern businesses members. We would like to ensure that you have all the right information about those issues, both positive and negative. We will be sending an eBlast directing you to our survey site with a request for you to participate. We will work hard to ensure that the issues are addressed and communicate the responses to you.

Since today is November 5, tomorrow is Election Day. Please vote! I know that it is very frustrating. We all have endured the negative ads, fact checking (we have to verify who is telling the truth), and we are astounded by the amount of money the is being spent. It looks like the cost of the presidential election could be north of 2 BILLION dollars! This is big business, and sadly that is what it is really about. For a country that is more than 52% small business, please let your voice be heard. To vote nor not to vote is your call, but not voting does not allow you to be a part of the solution, only part of the problem.

I bet you didn’t know that nestled just above Jumpin’ Jay’s Fish Café is the professional home of Mike Pagán and the team of Stinson Associates. Although tax season is every accountant’s busiest time, Mike doesn’t want to see you just at tax season. He wants the opportunity to build a relationship with you.

On Wednesday, October 2, the Gundalow Company received a proclamation from Governor John Lynch in recognition of the new programs on the sailing classroom Piscataqua, and for being a nonprofit with a diversified program and business model. He also recognized the Gundalow Company’s success in fulfilling its mission to protect the region’s maritime heritage and environment.

Gundalows were once the primary mode of transporting cargo to tidewater towns in the Piscataqua Region. Now, the Gundalow Company operates two of these vessels, both historically accurate replicas of the original cargo ships. Both vessels serve as floating classrooms in different capacities. The Captain Adams, which was built in 1982, serves as a dockside program vessel, and has served as the primary program venue since the Gundalow Company’s inception in 2002. The Piscataqua was built and launched in 2011, and serves to provide public sailing trips as well as educational opportunities while under sail.

“Gundalows have been the iconic workboats for the NH seacoast since the 1600’s and we are so proud to be recognized today for using the new gundalow to protect NH’s maritime heritage and to celebrate our rivers, bays, estuaries, and watersheds for the future”, says Executive Director, Molly Bolstor.

The Gundalow Company began offering public sails aboard the Piscataqua in May of 2012, and will continue the sailing season through October 28. More information may be found on their website: www.gundalow.org or by calling (603) 433-9505.

The Holiday Parade begins at 6:00 from Plaza 800 and winds through downtown to the South Mill parking lot. The theme is “A Sharing Season” and all are encouraged bring a non-perishable food item to the parade to benefit the Seacoast Family Food Pantry, Operation Blessing and the Salvation Army. Volunteers will collect the donations using shopping carts along the parade route.
