    Connections

Three issues ago we launched the digital issue that is always available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. If you have yet to use it you can check it out on our website www.ConnectionsKids.com. For us this was a great tool to have and helped us empower Caregivers even when we were out of books.

Today I am happy to announce the latest innovation here at the Connections Project, our cell phone app. For a little over a year we have been working on a new and innovative way to empower Caregivers that is lightning fast, but is also more intelligent about the family we are empowering. For instance today the paper version of Connections The Special Needs Directory helps Caregivers find resources by category and sub-category. This process has worked very well, but we have many limitations that we believe we can overcome by using technology. Let me give you a quick example. While the print version has helped more than 250,000 families find information here in Dallas, it can only go so far. If we run a story about Autism and the therapies that a Caregiver might want to investigate it would be helpful to those families, but at the same time exclude everyone else who does not have that diagno-sis (which is a lot of people). For this reason we have kept all content in Connections to a minimum and articles are inspirational in nature. However as we have built the platform for the cell phone app we realized that very quickly we could know how old your child was, what their diagnosis is, and where you are located. This means that the app can do something the paper version of Connections cant: Empower Caregivers Intelligently. This led us to develop a technology model that we call the personal concierge model or the virtual social worker model. Simply put using this app will be like having a social worker with you 24/7. We will be able to help you explore emerging therapies, find articles specific topics, and of course find local providers who can help your child. The difference is that every resource we will present you with will be specific to the age and diagnosis information that you gave us. This changes the game of empowering Caregivers forever.

Connections 2.0 For five years Connections has been focused on empowering Caregivers with free information fast. We have collected a ton of data from you and that data has driven every change we have made to this directory. This project was built to help Caregivers find information regardless of what diagnosis your child with special needs has. In other words one resource for every diagnosis. This model has worked amazingly well even though the cost of printing and the fact that we run out of Connections at some point each year have been two major challenges.

Yes this sounds cool, but can a Non-Profit really build and maintain a cell phone app that is this complex and innovative. Simply put no way! That is why we have partnered with a start up Technology Company called Care Starter. Care Starter will be handling the technology side and has the band width to grow and expand their product line while Connections can continue to focus on families who have a child, teen, or adult with special needs.

While Connections and Care Starter make a great team we still need one more team member YOU! We need a strong beta testing audience who know how to shop for resources and are not afraid to give us feedback. I can think of no better user base but you, so I have volunteered Connections to be a part of the beta testing group and now we need you to get involved. Testing a new product is always a bit frustrating, but this process allows you to help us do a better job of empowering many other Caregivers in the future. If you are interested in being a part of the beta test send us an email to [email protected] and join the team. This will put you on the beta test mailing list and the Caregiver survey list. This means that you will be the first to download and use the app. Our beta test target date will be sometime in the first quarter of 2013 so dont wait and sign up today by sending an email to [email protected] with Beta Test in the subject line.

    Our Story is Your Story..

This journey began for our family eight years ago. I can remember the smell of the doctors office, the sounds of a baby screaming in the exam room next to us and the sick feeling in my stomach as the doctor handed us a simple piece of paper that had been hurriedly copied by one of the nurse staff and was off center and blurry, but the word at the top was impossible to mistake as it was the diagnosis that we had feared . . . AUTISM. My eyes filled with tears as the doctor walked toward the door and it clicked shut with an enormous finality. I clutched the paper as if it were my only possession on this planet and began to read the sterile and tormenting prognosis for my little girl. The words stung my soul like poisonous darts bringing despair and waves of emotion that is difficult to put into words. Was this it? Was this piece of paper the best our doctor could do for us? I knew at that moment that at some point in my life time that I would do something to change this outcome. At the point of diagnosis or recognition of a delay, families should be given something tangible, something besides a cheap piece of paper filled with worst case scenarios and grim statistics, something useful, something practical, and maybe a little inspirationalthat something is what you are holding in your hands right nowConnections Issue #7.

    Now!

LearningRxs innovative one-on-one brain training system is backed by 30 years of research and clinical trials. Thousands of students have recorded dramatic skill grains and improved performance in earning, reading, and math. By approaching learning problems through improving problems through improving cognitive skills, students achieve far greater results in much less time than is possible through tutoring or academic reading programs. Results are so consistent that we can actually guarantee gains!

4 How do I know it will work?

Brain Training (also known as cognitive skills training) systematically strengthens the brains core mental abilities (i.e processing speed, attention, memory, auditory and visual processing and reasoning). Throughout the custom program a student works closely with his or her own private training specialist. or her own private training specialist. This one-on-one training relationship and skill-speciiic exercises combine to produce big improvements quickly.

3 What exactly is Brain Training?

Tutoring attempts to re-teach material that should have already been learned. It does so without asking, Why didnt the student learn this the iirst time? LearningRx begins with the question, How strong is his or her ability to learn? Testing designed to measure your childs individual learning skills your childs individual learning skills answers that question and guides the cognitive skills training that strengthens essential mental skills. If skill weakness is the root cause of your childs learning struggle, tutoring cannot correct it.

2 How are you different from tutoring?

Unfortunately the answer is, No. Learning, reading, or attention difiiculties rarely go away with time. If you sense that your child is struggling, you must take action. Professional testing and training can identify and quickly overcome the exact underlying cause of a learning struggle.struggle.

1 Are learning struggles a phase my child will outgrow?

  • It is hard to believe that Connections has been empowering caregivers here in Dallas for five years, but as I am writing this article we are less than three months from that mark. This project has overcome every obstacle that has been thrown at it and in spite of being underfunded and understaffed our model of free information for Caregivers has prevailed. I would like to thank all of our 180 partners for their steadfast support of this project as it has grown and matured. To put it simply we could not provide this amazing resource that you are holding without our partners who willingly support free information and have embraced compassion toward the families they so willingly serve. Just before printing this issue our project here in Dallas hit sustainability, which means that we are officially floating financially leaning only on our partners support and leadership. I have said for many years that this book is only the first step towards a much better world for kids, teens, and adults with special needs. Now that we are floating in Dallas, we begining the process of expanding the Connec-tions Project across the United States of America. For this reason we will be raising donation capital to bring free information to the rest of the country and to innovate on the behalf of Caregivers while organizing the Special Care Industry at the same time. I am more excited than ever at what we can accomplish as this project expands. So what is to come? Wellif you want a peak at the innovation I was talking about you will want to find the article about our new cell phone app that will be beta testing here in Dallas on page 2 & 3. The future is bright and it will take all of us working together to keep it that way.

See how therapy can help your child.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach in which interventions based on learning and motivation are used to significantly improve behaviors in children.

Since 2004, The Behavior Exchange has used ABA techniques to help children in the areas of compliance, instruction following, reading, language, sibling relationships, age-appropriate-play, motor, social and self-help skills.
