2013 ANNUAL REPORT July 1, 2012 - June 30, 2013
CONNECTION ACTION HOPE
Dear Supporter,
A lot has changed since Beverly Foster’s husband placed an ad in a Portland, Ore. paper hoping to find people she could talk with about her severe psoriasis. Within a week, Beverly received more than 100 phone calls. She began organizing meetings, and in 1967, she led the formation of the Psoriasis Society of Oregon.
Today, we’re the National Psoriasis Foundation and we serve more than 2 million people every year who are affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
We now have offices in Portland and Washington, D.C., and a growing research program that has invested $10 million to date in grants and fellowships that have led to discoveries about the genetic origins of psoriatic diseases and the link between psoriasis and other serious health conditions, like cardiovascular disease.
We have 80,000 advocates working to increase funding for research, improve access to care and reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses. Our staff and volunteers helped more than 3,500 people in fiscal year 2013 receive support and information about treatments and insurance. Our websites received 4.3 million visits in 2013.
One thing hasn’t changed, however: Our focus on helping people with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis live better lives.
In this report, you’ll learn how our Psoriasis One to One Mentor program has helped people struggling with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis form connections that can change lives. You’ll read how one family was driven to act after a son’s diagnosis and created an event that raises funds for psoriatic disease research – and lets kids have fun, too. You’ll also discover how hope for a cure for psoriasis got one prominent scientist to dedicate her career to psoriatic disease research.
Your generous contributions make all these programs, and others, possible. Thanks to your support, the Foundation collected $7.5 million in revenue in fiscal year 2013, including nearly $1.4 million in individual contributions. With your help, we can achieve our mission of finding a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and to eliminate their devastating effects.
Sincerely,
Randy Beranek Daniel Farrington

psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and to eliminate their devastating effects
through research, advocacy and education.
THE FOUNDATION’S STRATEGIC PRIORITIES INCLUDE
The Foundation has a five-
point action plan to find better
treatments and a cure:
Æ Fund the startup of promising new and innovative studies through our Discovery and Translational Grants.
Æ Increase the number of scientists doing psoriatic disease research through our Medical Dermatology Fellowship program.
Æ Provide scientists with DNA samples through the National Psoriasis Victor Henschel BioBank, aiding their search for specific genes that cause psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Æ Work with federal policymakers to increase government investment in psoriatic disease research.
Æ Promote patient involvement in research studies and clinical trials, vital to bringing safe and effective treatments to market.
ADVOCACY
The Foundation’s advocacy
priorities are focused on
strategies that promote
federal research efforts and
ensure individuals living with
psoriatic diseases have fair and
affordable access to needed
treatments. The 2013 advocacy
agenda includes:
Æ Growing and supporting federal investment in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis research.
Æ Advancing the psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis public health efforts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Æ Reducing out-of-pocket expenses for treatments.
Æ Ensuring affordable access to new treatments.
The Foundation focuses on
educating patients and health
care providers on how to best
manage psoriasis and psoriatic
arthritis and improve overall
health. Among our efforts:
Æ Creating the CONNECT kit, a resource for health care professionals that provides current treatment guidelines, research opportunities and materials to help them educate their patients.
Æ Establishing the Psoriasis One to One Mentor program that matches the newly diagnosed with someone experienced with living with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis and trained to help.

on to become mentors themselves.
“She serves as a motivator -- knowing the challenges she has, and that I’m not the only one,” said Karen Dudley, a nurse from Concord, Va., who said working with Eggemann has been “tremendous.”
Fox, too, has thought about becoming a mentor, especially after recently meeting Eggemann in person.
“I can’t talk with my girlfriends or husband the same way as I can with someone who has it,” Fox said. “She just gets it … Being understood helps me feel in control.”
Through periodic phone calls and emails, Eggemann said she has found what she was looking for — a way to help others with psoriasis feel less alone.
And as one of the earliest graduates of the One to One Mentor program, she is thrilled to have seen the program evolve to include a network that can provide help for all kinds of specific situations, from the pros and cons of phototherapy, to managing psoriasis during pregnancy.
Dudley said the program offers the support that family members and friends may want to give, but can’t because they just don’t understand what it’s like to live with psoriasis.
“So many people live in such social isolation,” Eggemann said. “This
program is important because it gives people a chance to connect. I wouldn’t wish this disease on anybody, but it has given me the opportunity to meet some amazing people.”

people a chance to connect.”
-Terri Eggemann
Loneliness. Isolation. Anxiety.
For those newly diagnosed with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, these are symptoms friends and loved ones often don’t see.
Terri Eggemann remembers. Learning she had psoriasis in 2008 left her feeling lost.
“I tried to talk to people about it and they would change the subject,” Eggemann said. “I needed to connect.”
Eggemann, a nurse in Valrico, Fla., turned to the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF), and through its annual conference, learned about the programs that support people living with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
“I was so impressed,” she said. “I wanted to know that much. I wanted to be involved, and eventually, I wanted to give something back.”
By the next year, she had found a way to do just that by becoming a mentor through the Psoriasis One to One Mentor program, which provides a “match” for those newly diagnosed or otherwise needing support.
For the past four years, Eggemann has been a listening ear and an understanding voice on the other end of the phone or through email.
“She’s like a friend who gets it,” said Alexandra Fox, of Arlington, Va., who was paired with Eggemann early on. “The first year after my diagnosis I was not happy. I was having trouble with my medication and needed to connect with someone … I think the first time we talked for two hours. She was a lifeline.”
That kind of personal bond is a cornerstone of the program, Eggemann said:
“I can say, ‘I know exactly where you are, and I know exactly how you feel,’” she said. “I enjoy the connection, and I learn from them, too.”
In fact, some of Eggemann’s mentees have gone

“It means so much to have random

(millions of) people who have psoriasis.”
- Sam LichtenThe Lichten Family, from left to right: Sam, Rachel, Sophie, Jason and Jake
6 • NATIONAL PSORIASIS FOUNDATION
When Sam Lichten was diagnosed with psoriasis seven years ago at the age of 5, his parents felt driven to do something big to support their oldest son.
New runners, they decided to start with what they loved: They reached out to the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) with the idea to start a race.
Over the past two years, their Team NPF event — 5K to Cure Psoriasis in Columbus, Ohio — has raised more than $35,000, and a whole lot of awareness in Sam’s community.
And the parents who wanted to make a difference — Rachel and Jason Lichten — have worked with the NPF to create a family-centered event that has inspired hundreds to don orange and black shirts as part of a race to find a cure.
The event, held each year in October, has a Halloween theme, and in addition to the 1K walk and 5K run, offers a family festival and trick-or-treating for kids in costume, or in the case of Sam’s football team, in uniform.
“As parents of a child who has psoriasis, we didn’t want him to be at an event largely made up of adults,” Rachel said. “We wanted to create a kid-friendly atmosphere.”
That’s one of Sam’s favorite parts, in addition to the fall treats, the cool incentive prizes like hats and T-shirts, and his job sounding the air horn at the start of the race.
The event helps to connect those with psoriasis to local resources and the NPF, but having a festival feel also helps community members not affected by psoriasis to learn about it.
“What makes our event unique is that people are coming out not just because of their connection to psoriasis,” Rachel said.
Sam said that’s his mom’s favorite thing: When a person they have never met signs up.
It’s important to Sam, too.
“It’s a great feeling,” Sam said. “It means so much to have random people coming out and supporting you and the (millions of) people who have psoriasis.”
Now in its third year, the Lichtens hope to raise $25,000, and of course, continue to educate and connect with even more of their neighbors.
The family’s commitment to raising awareness has helped Sam’s confidence, too. When his baby-sitter asked him about the plaques on his knees, instead of turning to his mom, he was able to tell his sitter that they were psoriasis.
“His baby-sitter responded, ‘Oh, that’s what you do the race for!’” Rachel said.
The Lichtens said supporting their son and helping others with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis drives them to expand every year on their successful partnership with the NPF, and they encourage others to get involved however they can.
“We started the run to build momentum, and the event has grown,” Jason said. “It doesn’t have to be a 5K. Do the things you love to do, and build from there.”
For the Lichten family, that’s making a 5K Halloween run for a cure an annual family tradition.

Nicole Ward’s journey into psoriatic disease research has been a wide and winding one, but it began when she was very young.
That’s because her father, Blane, has psoriasis.
Still, Nicole didn’t set out to study psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Her Ph.D. is in neuroscience and all of her fellowship training was spent studying the biology of the human vascular system.
In the end, though, psoriasis has become the perfect crossroads for a curious scientist like Ward to study
HOPE
both the nervous and vascular systems, as well as the role inflammation plays in the body and how one organ system, like the skin, can affect other organ systems.
“It’s a phenomenal opportunity for me as a basic scientist to try and understand the basic mechanisms that drive the disease,” she said. “It has personal meaning to me, obviously, because my dad has the disease.”
Nicole has received four $50,000 National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) Discovery Grants since 2009. Those grants have helped her collect data to win three National Institutes of Health research grants worth more than $3 million total. Her studies so far

Those conversations have inspired her to look for more holistic strategies to improve psoriasis severity or reduce the risk of developing related conditions like cardiovascular disease.
“I think the NPF, in particular, does a fantastic job of bringing basic scientists into a room with patients and opens up that conversation,” she said. “I would love it if psoriasis patients would come to the lab and see what we do. It would help them understand what we do and it would help (the scientists) at a higher level understand the importance of what we are doing.”
Blane, who has mild plaque psoriasis, said he’s learned a lot more about his disease since his daughter began studying it so intently. He is most surprised, however, by how much contact Nicole has with patients.
“Her energy is infectious,” he said. “I’m proud of who she is as well as what she does. I did not expect her to get so excited about psoriasis.”
And it’s that connection – the scientist to the patient – that really motivates Nicole to do what she does.
“I want to change more than just science,” she said.
focus on the role psoriasis plays in cardiovascular inflammation and how the nervous system and psoriasis flare-ups are connected.
Nicole recently traveled to Capitol
Hill with two patients to lobby U.S.
legislators about the importance of psoriatic disease research. She
was struck by the stories the patients
shared about how psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis
affect their lives and the lives of their children.

Nicole Ward with her father, Blane. Research Investments Yield Big Returns
Since 2009, Nicole Ward has received four $50,000 National Psoriasis Foundation grants to examine the link between psoriasis and cardiovascular disease. Here’s how those investments are paying off so far:
Æ Ward received a $1.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2012 to further her study of the link between psoriasis and cardiovascular disease, including if treating psoriasis reduces the cardiovascular disease risk.
Æ She is using a $1.9 million NIH grant also received in 2012 to continue to investigate the role a key protein in the immune system called interleukin-17C plays in the development of psoriasis.
Æ Ward also received a $500,000 NIH grant in 2013 to examine how the nervous system affects psoriasis.

We are deeply grateful to you, our donors, whose support enables us to continually renew and expand our commitment to the mission to find a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, we received revenue of $7.5 million in gifts, pledges and other support.
Our focus remains on finding a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. During the fiscal year we awarded seven new research grants and continued the funding on second-year translational grants for a combined total of $950,000, and funded 13 Medical Dermatology Fellowships totaling $520,000. We continue to build the BioBank to further the study of psoriasis genetics.
In its seventh year, our Walk to Cure Psoriasis program raised $1,265,000. We are thankful to the many individuals and corporate sponsors who are helping to make this program increasingly successful.
During this fiscal year we committed more than $6.1 million, or 80 cents of every dollar spent, to programs which advance the mission of the Foundation. The NPF is fiscally sound with $7.4 million in assets. We are proud of our efforts toward the accomplishment of our mission this year, and we remain dedicated to our role as stewards of the funds entrusted to us.
Thank you for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Chip Newton
