Our next Team Construct opportunity was the Troy West Addition project, a $16 million GMP with Skanska completed in 2002. This was followed by another successful Team Construct project, the Royal Oak South Addition. This was a $40 million GMP project completed in 2004 with Barton Malow. The success of this project, along with the Team Construct delivery method, has been mentioned in a number of industry publications. Due to the success of these projects and the genuine efforts to satisfy Beaumont’s needs and requirements, we continue to be awarded new projects. In January 2005, Harper Limbach was awarded the mechanical contract for the 600,000 SF, Florida Hospital South New Patient Tower addition, worth $16 million. This project is not just any project with any client. The relationship with Harper Limbach and Florida Hospital goes back 50 years and continues on today.

Florida Hospital is part of the Adventist Health System that has facilities in 12 different states, including Florida. In the Central Florida area, Florida Hospital has 17 different campuses, of which Harper Limbach has completed projects at eight.

The continued success of this relationship directly results from the hard work and dedication Harper Limbach has put into developing relationships at multiple levels within the Florida Hospital organization, such as Florida Hospital Foundation, working with individual campus managers, and the Florida Hospital Engineering Department. In addition, providing dependable mechanical contracting services as a prime contractor and subcontractor on many successful projects also plays a part in the long-term relationship. Together, these critical elements have created the foundation of our continued success.

In the last 10 years, Harper Limbach has primarily worked with Brasfield & Gorrie and Poole Construction in the construction process. This relationship with these contractors allows Harper Limbach to remain the mechanical subcontractor of choice for Florida Hospital.

USC MEDICAL CENTER

Western Air Limbach has teamed up with AO Reed Company of San Diego, Murray Company of Los Angeles, and the University-Marelich, an Emcor Company from Los Angeles, in a joint venture to design and install a complete mechanical and plumbing package for Los Angeles County (L.A.C.) and the University of Southern California (U.S.C.). The L.A.C. and U.S.C. Medical Center is a 1,500,000 square foot replacement hospital. Western Air Limbach is responsible for the fabrication and installation of all the sheet metal and piping in the 600 bed inpatient tower. In addition, this has become the largest single site hospital that Limbach has ever built.

The joint venture, “Med Center Mechanical,” has a contract to perform this work, which is in excess of $70 million. Various members of the four-partner company, totaling a workforce of approx 15 people, staff the project. As of May 2005, the project was 50% completed. The expected completion date is scheduled for early 2007.

Participation in this joint venture has allowed all team members the opportunity to bring their best resources forward. Utilizing the skills and expertise of all four companies has benefited the project immensely, showcasing supreme talent and precision. Western Air Limbach looks forward to another project completed, safely and efficiently.

LIMBACH HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT On February 28, 2005 Limbach’s Pittsburgh location was awarded a fast track, design build contract for the construction of five package pumping skids to be used in fossil fuel power plants as part of the process to reduce stack emissions . The contract award from Energy Systems Associates of Carnegie, PA was for approximately $150,000 and included responsibilities for the piping design, materials appropriation, piping fabrication and assembly, pneumatic and electrical controls, electrical power wiring, all hydrostatic pressure testing, loop checking and shop commissioning.

The real challenge in accepting this award was the requirement to complete and ship four of the five units by March 31st, and complete and ship the fifth unit by April 15th. All of the piping on these units is made from stainless steel, and material appropriation was a major concern because of availability of the piping components. The preliminary design had to be completed quickly for purposes of approvals and placing material orders. The final design and details of the fabrications were actually being performed simultaneously with the shop fabrication of the structural frame and piping spool assemblies.

Our steamfitter shop foreman, Mr. Mike Vevers, handled the burden of setting up the Pittsburgh’s pipe fabrication shop into an efficient assembly line formation. Because each of the units was unique in terms of their physical size, pipe sizing, flow rate requirements, control and specialty components, etc., the materials handling aspect of the project presented a major challenge in itself. A designated materials area and assembly area was established for each of the five units. As piping materials, pumps, controls, and piping specialties, etc. arrived at the shop they had to be inspected, documented, inventoried and assigned to the correct area for use in fabrication and assembly.

Another area of major concern was maintaining the quality control aspects of the project. The piping systems were fabricated in accordance with the ASME Code For Pressure Piping, Section B31.1, the qualification requirements for our welders was maintained in accordance with ASME Code Section IX. The fabrication of the stainless steel piping involved approximately 1,350 small bore pipe welds that had to be made and inspected to the code acceptance criteria. Mr. Vevers had to continuously monitor the available materials to the spool sheet requirements, along with the welder’s progress so that we would have the correct sequence of completed sub-assemblies, prior to and during the actual skid assembly.

In the third week of March, the assemblies were being worked on by multiple crafts as welders, pipefitters, electricians, and commissioning personnel pulled together to complete the project in accordance with the tight schedule and budgetary requirements.

On March 31, Limbach shipped four of the five units to Reliant Energy Power Plants in Shawville and New Castle, Pennsylvania and Niles, Ohio. On April 15, the fifth unit shipped to Reliant Energy’s Power Plant at Avon Lake, Ohio.

“ESA is very pleased with the team effort and finished product provided by Limbach and Ed Ley. Our strong working relationship and Limbach’s understanding of our needs allowed ESA to meet a very demanding schedule while still maintaining our high standards for quality.”

Most of you truly believe you are not the one who is going to have an accident and be injured. After all, you are in control, you know what you are doing and you are going to be careful. It may happen to someone else, but it will not happen to you. Therefore, safety does not apply to you. It probably just is not one of the top ten things you think about every day. But, let me put it in a different perspective and ask you a question. Do you drive your automobile differently with your family in the car than you do when they are not? I bet the answer for almost everyone is Yes. After all, you would not do anything to hurt a loved one. Why then are there not the same feelings for ourselves or for our co-workers when we are at work? We ignore safe work practices, take risks and allow others to do the same.

When IIF is present, our relationship to safety becomes personal and passionate. Working safely and avoiding risk becomes something we do because it is the right and smart thing to do. We ensure that we go home every night to our family and loved ones and we ensure the same for those whom we work around. No family should have to experience the pain of seeing a loved one injured at work or go through the uncertainty the injury and the whole experience brings. This is what IIF means to me, “Everybody, Everyday”. I hope it means the same for you. Everybody goes home safely everyday.

Our journey to IIF is just beginning, but I can tell you that I have already heard about and seen significant change in our Company. I see people talking differently to each other and communicating more. I see people demonstrating a true concern for co-workers and asking them to work safely. Individually we all contribute to the success of the company, but working together we can accomplish great things. Working together we will make IIF a part of our culture and make Limbach a place we are all proud to call the safest place to work.

LIMBACH LAUNCHES INCIDENT & INJURY FREEFIRST SPECIALTY CONTRACTOR IN US, by Ron Wells

By now I hope all of you have heard of our Incident & Injury Free (IIF) initiative. We have been talking about IIF for over a year and I am proud to announce it has arrived.

Our journey to IIF really started at the January 2005 Executive Management Team meeting where Jay Greenspan, Founder of JMJ Consultants, LLC, conducted a full day IIF Safety Leadership Workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to make certain IIF was appropriate for our company and to make certain IIF was an initiative the executive management team supported. The workshop was an overwhelming success and we immediately began making plans to roll IIF out company-wide. Since the first Branch workshop in Boston held on April 27, 2005, JMJ has conducted a total of eight IIF Safety Leadership Workshops and trained more than 300 senior, project and field trade

labor managers in IIF. Going forward plans have been put into place as a result of those workshops and we are now bringing IIF to every employee in the Company.

Perhaps two questions that are on everyone’s mind is: What exactly is IIF? and What does it mean to me? Both are excellent questions and both deserve an answer. IIF is a safety leadership initiative

designed to help us rethink our personal relationship to safety and to help us better understand how our relationships with others impacts our attitudes about safety. Relationships are the foundation for all accomplishments.

LIMBACH EMPLOYEE MAKES THE GRADE Limbach would like to congratulate Richard Detwiler on his exceptional performance taking the United Association Star Test. This test is administered to all graduating apprentices from the United Association program and is a necessary requirement for graduation. Passing this exam is known to be difficult, only thirty percent of all graduating apprentices were able to accomplish this. Richard not only passed this exam, but received the highest grade in the class! Congratulations Richard!

LIMBACH BOSTON RECEIVES NEMCA SAFETY RECORDS AWARD 2004At the April New England Mechanical Contractors meeting, Peter Chaney, MCAA Director of Safety and Health, presented Dennis Sacco Jr. of Limbach Company with the NEMCA Safety Records Award for 2004.

OSUNA GRADUATESBig congratulations echoed and loud applause greeted Gil Osuna, when he entered the conference room in a surprise cake party thrown by Western Air Limbach employees. The reason for celebration? After years of hard work and dedication, Gil Osuna recently graduated from Dominguez Hills University, receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, with a concentration on accounting.

Gil Osuna was hired October 1994 as an accounting clerk and has truly accomplished remarkable things since. A few months after Osuna was hired, he discovered a formula error in the union worksheet, saving the company $25,000! In addition to this discovery, Osuna also re-organized the accounting structure in accounts payable and payroll and contributed written guidelines for properly processing and application of sales tax. Osuna is currently Western Air Limbach’s senior accountant and has also been recommended for the accounting supervision position! Congratulations Gil Osuna on all your accomplishments!

WE HAVE A WINNER…Recently, Limbach held a “Name The Newsletter” contest. A large amount of Limbach employees participated, offering creative, innovative ideas, all uniquely different. Choosing a winner was not an easy task. Our panel of judges consisted of the EMT board. Considerable thought was put into choosing between all 197 entries.

On March 15, 2005, Phillip Hochstein was selected the winner, submitting the title: Connecting with Limbach. Phillip is a valued employee, working for our L.A. branch, Western Air Limbach. The quarterly newsletter will primarily be distributed to Limbach’s employees, vendors, and clients. It will focus on new projects, company updates, a message from the president, Charlie Bacon, and industry trends.
