This month, we would like to recognize Warren Nagumo, who began serving in Children’s Ministry at FUMC Hurst in 2011 after hearing a request for help during the 11 a.m. worship service. Warren serves as a workshop leader in Testament Travels. When asked what he enjoys about leading, he said, “I really enjoy the opportunity and challenge of interacting with all of the

age groups in the program. The Testament Travels lessons are creative, fun, and instructive for the children and adults who participate. We all teach each other. It’s a great way to learn!”Warren is dedicated to teaching the children the Bible and mentions, “I really can’t think of a better or more important calling in my life than teaching children about God and His

Word. I have been doing this long enough now that I have had the privilege of working with many of the young people in our congregation. I have gotten a great deal of joy and satisfaction from watching them grow and become mature Christians and committed followers of Jesus Christ.”Thank you, Warren for your service with our children. You are a blessing!

Following the wishes of Mrs. Boenker, the IJB Scholarship Committee will award four scholarships at a minimum of $1,000.Applications for the 2017 Ima Jean Boenker Scholarship will be available from the church website, http://www.fumchurst.org/boenker on Tuesday, May 30, 2017. 2017 Buzz Burkhalter Service Award

Celebration Singers Present Pre-Tour Concert and Host Visiting ChoirOur youth choir will be presenting their Chicago tour concert in the Sanctuary at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6. They are also excited to share this concert with the youth choir from Cannon Methodist Church in Snellville, Georgia. Come and support both outstanding choirs that have chosen to devote their time to sharing God’s love with others. Be in prayer for our kids as they are gone June 7-11.

The Buzz Burkhalter Service Award is an annual memorial award to honor young adults who exemplify selfless Christian service to the FUMC Hurst congregation and the community. Modeled after long-time beloved usher Buzz Burkhalter, the award committee is seeking applications from FUMC Hurst members (between the ages of 18–25) who serve from their hearts to make our church and the community a better place. Church members are welcome to encourage those who are eligible and deserving to apply. This $500 award is NOT a scholarship, so applicants do not have to be students to be eligible.

Wyatt “Buzz” Burkhalter lived his life as a friendly, encouraging face of Christ–greeting and assisting people coming into our church. Buzz lived and embraced being a servant of God. He exemplified the humility of the servant’s heart and the spirit of Christ, and was always listening for God’s call of how to help others every day. Online applications are available on the church website with instructions on where to send them. Deadline for applications is Monday, July 17, 2017. Contact FUMC church member David Ball for more information at [email protected] or call 817.343.5579.

A special thanks to the parents who helped with setting up and centerpieces! Day School Pre-K Recognition was held Thursday, May 11. We are still enrolling for the 2017-18 school year! A few spots are available in all age groups 2 months to 4 years old. Don’t miss the opportunity for your child to be a part of a great ministry! Thank You to Our 2017 Sponsors! The Wilson Canafax Golf Scramble Committee thanks the 2017 sponsors for their contributions to this year’s event. Your participation allowed us to net $15,465 for the mission budget of our church.

Looking for a way for your family to give back this summer? During the month of July, families are invited to share a cold drink with Mission Central’s Village Pantry guests who are often walking to our location during this hot-weather month. This opportunity is available 10 a.m.–1 p.m. or 1–4 p.m., Tuesday–Friday during the month of July. Families will come to Mission Central’s Village Pantry, set up a table outside our front door, and offer lemonade to our guests and others who pass by. Your family will provide the lemonade mix (in a new, in-date, unopened container), ice and cups; Mission Central will provide the table and tablecloths.  One family may work per shift, and you must make prior arrangements with Catherine Hollis at [email protected] or 817.595.0011. This opportunity is also open to small groups like Girl Scouts or Boy Scouts with adult supervision.

New Family Volunteer Opportunity at Mission Central

The Goal Diggers Sunday School Class, along with other church volunteers, was busy the week April 22-27 sorting, pricing and picking up donations from church members! The Garage Sale was held Friday and Saturday, April 28 and 29, and there were lots of shoppers in spite of all the construction on Pipeline and bad weather “threats”! Thanks to those who donated, those who worked, and those who shopped! Everyone’s hard work was well worth the effort as we invited many to visit our church and made over $5,500 for missions! This sale, the 17th coordinated by the Gold Diggers since 2009, brought the total amount raised for missions through the Garage Sales to over $75,000! What a great church-wide accomplishment! Pictured below: Morning set-up crew.

Prayer Cards for July Medical Mission TeamIf you’d like to be a part of the July Medical Mission Team Journey to El Guabal, Panama, you can write prayer cards for our team members. We have 28 members on this medical team which includes our bus driver José Gomez, who is like a member of our family, and David and Cindy Ceballos, our missionaries in Panama. After picking up a list of participants from the Welcome Desk, we ask that you choose one or two team members and covenant to pray for those team members each day of the journey, July 8-16. We also need you to write a prayer card to each member of the team. These cards will be delivered each evening, and team members are so excited to receive mail from home each morning! These words of encouragement help team members endure the heat, humidity and rain as they serve the people of the rain forest in the comarca.Support from our church is so important as this team represents you as they serve as the hands and feet of Jesus the Christ. All cards need to be returned to the basket in the atrium no later than Sunday, July 2.

Help us fill the bucket!Starting on Sunday, June 4, you can be a part of our Water Is Life project! Throughout the summer, we will accept donations toward construction of a water well for a community served by our missionaries to the Congo, Jonathan and Donna Baker. Our goal is $40,000, which will build one motorized well or possibly four manually-operated wells. When the wells become operational, they will serve approximately 8,000 people. No longer will women have to walk six hours daily to collect water for their families. No longer will

people suffer from diseases caused by contaminated water. We can significantly improve the quality of life for a sizeable community. How can you help? Each Sunday, we will collect donations at our table in the Fellowship Hall. Any amount is welcome! If 200 families would contribute $200 each, we could easily reach our goal by August 27! If you’d like to write a check to FUMC Hurst, please indicate on the memo line that the funds should be directed to the Water Is Life project.Think about the amount of money that you and your family spend

on beverages each week. Would you consider contributing an equal amount to Water Is Life? Think about the easy availability of clean water in our homes. How would you feel if you had to travel for hours each day just to collect enough water for your family?Think about access to pure drinking water. How would you feel if you had to be concerned about drinking dangerously contaminated water? Water Is Life offers us a splendid opportunity to demonstrate Christ’s love by providing a life-giving resource. Please help us fill the bucket!

Bring Your Best Memories and Family Stories to Life! by Pat McDanielWhen I was 20 and a new bride, my husband and I ran a motel in Knoxville, TN, while he attended college. We catered to traveling salesmen, and occasionally my grandfather was a customer. Once he began telling his story. Unfortunately, all I remember is...“During the Spanish-American War, I slept on the capitol steps in Nashville and joined the Army. I was 17 according to my draft card. I was assigned to ride a buckboard, carrying supplies to the troops, and wore out the seat of my pants.” Do you want your grandchildren to remember you the way I remember my grandparents, only as old? We have experienced so many changes. “Writing Your Life” is designed to help you remember with questions, stories and reminders. This 8-week class will meet in room Wesley 205 from 10-11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, beginning June 20 (no class July 4). The class is not about grammar, it's about LIFE—your life and your memories! Please join us! Help your family to know more about you. Contact Cathy Cartmill at [email protected] for more information.“Now that I am old and gray . . . give me time to tell this new generation and those who follow about all Your mighty miracles, Lord.” (Psalm 71:18 TLB)

Vietnam Era Veteran Lapel Pin PresentationOn Sunday, April 30, in our Fellowship Hall, Vietnam Era Veterans were presented with lapel pins recognizing their service to our country. It was a great time to show our appreciation to the men and women who sacrificed for the freedom all Americans enjoy. If you are a veteran from the Vietnam era (November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975) and have not received your lapel pin, contact Dave Davidson at [email protected].

SURPRISE!! We have made some interesting changes. Join us as we try something new and experience new challenges. We still have four night circles that meet monthly. We still meet the first Tuesday of each month September through May for a general meeting. Refreshments are served at 9:30 a.m., and programs include world events and concerns about women and children around the world. We no longer have day circles but meet in interest groups. These may vary each month or may

stay for a while. Each month, you select a group in which you will participate. We have a book discussion group. Sometimes books are from the UMW Reading List; sometimes not. If you want to do something to nurture our church, we have a group that has cleaned closets, visited home-centered UMW members; and had a speaker on Joy! Another group does community activities. We’ve made lunches for the day workers at the Stock Show, helped at Room at the Inn, learned about the Village Garden, and helped

at Tarrant Area Food Bank. The fourth group is project based. We've learned about plarn (plastic yarn made from plastic grocery bags) and made reusable sanitary pads and dresses. Our projects are geared to helping others in our community or globally. For information on our Night Circles or Day Groups, please contact Ann Thompson at [email protected]. We’d love to have you join us in the fall!

In March, women from our church family gathered at Camp Arrowhead in Cleburne for an overnight retreat. The theme, Rising Strong, was based on the book by Brene Brown and was presented by Rev. Estee Valendy of First United Methodist Church, Saginaw. Rev. Valendy helped us understand that we all fall, but the key is that we need to learn how to “rise strong” after the fall. In addition to the stimulating lectures/discussions, Lisa Womack taught a yoga class before the Saturday session as well as breathing exercises to help us learn the value of relaxing in stressful situations. The ladies

brought symbols of strength to display throughout the retreat and were invited to wear crowns representing how they “rise strong.” Overall, it was great to get away and enjoy the beauty of God’s world while having fun and

learning together. Based on retreat survey results, we are planning the next Oasis Women’s Retreat for Sept/Oct of 2018. If you would like to help plan our next event, please contact Rev. Donna McKee.

Rising Strong - 2017 Women’s Retreat

Our church is connecting with our community and our world in inspiring ways. Come hear the stories from our brothers and sisters who have experienced God through serving others. July 2- Project 44: On the first Sunday in July, we will hear from a representative of Project 44 about the life-changing work they do. As you may recall, this non-profit organization refurbishes cars and gives them to those in need of transportation. July 9- Junior High Mission Celebration: During this time, we will celebrate with our junior high students how God has been at work through them in the summer

of 2017. We will see pictures and hear from the students about their mission trip experiences. July 16- Senior High Mission Celebration: Today, we will celebrate all that God has accomplished through the work and faithfulness of our senior high students. Again, we will hear about their mission trip experiences this summer. July 23- Panama Construction Teams: Through images and testimony, mission team members will share their experiences of the vital work being accomplished at the Punta Delgadita Church in Santiago, Panama.

July 30- Panama Medical Team: Through images and testimony, mission team members will share their experiences of the saving work being done in rural Guabal, Panama.Beginning Sunday, July 2nd, all adults and adult Sunday school classes are invited to gather at 9:50 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall (Presentations begin promptly at 10 a.m.).
