St Mary Catholic Church, Ireland IN 3
Dear St. Mary and Precious Blood parishes,
I recently made an announcement at St. Mary about the need to make changes with the Masses. I want both parishes to be aware of the
facts and reasons for the need to adjust. First we needed both parishes to be in line with Church law for the allotted amount of Masses
being offered. As indicated during the Strategic Planning process, Canon Law permits three Masses per priest on the weekend. Previ-
ously St. Mary had four Masses offered on the weekend. After consultation with the St. Mary Parish Council and Parish staff, and re-
search, the recommendation was to eliminate the 10:30 Sunday morning Mass. The reasons we came to this conclusion were: over the
past 12 months it was one of the lower attended Masses at St. Mary. Also of the four Parishes in the Ireland/Jasper area, 3 had Masses
offered at 10:30a.m.
Next a goal of the Jasper Deanery Core Group, in the Strategic Planning, was to offer staggered Mass times. The reason was to make
Mass available to as many in the area at varied times. This is important since in our area we have several employers who offer three
working shifts e.g. the hospital, manufacturing and agriculture.
Also by staggering the Masses, it makes best use of our Priestly staff. If Fr. Pascal or I cannot offer Mass on the weekend for some
reason, with staggered Masses we could work through one weekend. Certainly we would not want that as a regular situation. It would
endanger our health and we would serve all of you less than you deserve. However, I have been in a three parish cluster before and we
have managed this in a crisis. Another alternative would be a Priest-less Sunday Scripture Service, if no other priest was available. No
Eucharist would be offered in a Priest-less Sunday Service but it would count as your Sunday obligation.
Adjusting the schedule would allow us to make most efficient use of the lay staff as well. An example would be if the scheduled ac-
companist could not make Mass, we could have the one scheduled at the other parish play for both parishes in a crisis situation vs. no
music.
Now that we have attained the three Mass limit at both parishes, we need to focus on staggering the Mass times. This becomes more
difficult and I seek input from all of you. A recommendation that was made would be to move Precious Blood Saturday evening
Mass to 4:30p.m. and St. Mary Saturday evening Mass to 6:00p.m.
The reasons for this suggestion include: The majority of the Precious Blood Saturday evening Mass are the elderly. Often I hear that it
is more difficult for them to drive at night. Pastorally speaking this makes sense to me. Also St. Mary Parish has more of an agriculture
based congregation. This would allow more work to be completed in the fields as weather permits. This would accomplish our goal of
staggering the Mass times within our linked parishes.
I have asked for feedback via e-mail from both Parishes on staggering the Saturday evening Mass. To date, I am grateful for the
feedback suggestions and support already received. Certainly I do not want to take anything away from any one. In a perfect world,
Mass would be offered all the time. As pastor I must deal with the issues of keeping our parishes in line with Church Law and serve
the largest population as best Fr. Pascal and I can with our God given abilities. As we continue to restructure our parishes to best serve
all the people of God, I ask you to please keep all of the priests in your prayers as we try our best to serve you. Fr. Gary

This Sunday, we would like to welcome Bishop
Thompson, our Confirmation Candidates, their sponsors
and families to St. Mary. Please pray for our young adults that
they may be open to receiving the Gifts of the Holy Spirit through
this Sacrament. Pray that they may gain Wisdom so they may
have a deeper meaning for the ups and downs in their life; for Un-
derstanding so they may comprehend how to live as a follower of
Jesus; Right Judgment to know the difference between right and
wrong and to choose what is good; Courage to enable them to
take risks and to overcome fear as they try to live out the Gospel;
Knowledge so they have a better understanding of Jesus; Rever-
ence so they can totally trust in the One who created them and the
gift of Wonder and Awe so they may be aware of God’s unlim-
ited power and love. May they also continue to nourish their spir-
itual life as they continue their faith journey.

St. Mary Preschool
We have a week of school under our belt for the sec-ond semester. We’ve already mastered learning colors. In ad-dition to learning our alphabet letters, we are now ready to tackle learning numbers! We will learn one number each week practicing many skills such as writing and identifying the num-bers. This week in our Bible stories, we discussed The Wise Men. It was important to explain the reasoning of why gifts are given at Christmas. Year One students learned a finger play about The Wise Men following the Christmas star. Year Two students learned a fun song about the gifts that were given to the baby born in Bethlehem. The Christmas season is a celebration of such wonder and awe, especially to a pre-school student who might be learning this all for the very first time!! Ms. Lauren
Sometime we all need a simple reminder. Please turn off your
cell phones when coming to Mass. We just want to remind
everyone to please be respectful of those around you.
Thank you!!
