NOVEMBER 20, 2016 - 3 -OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE

My deepest thanks to all parishioners of St. Timothy parish for all you do to increase charity and to take on sacrifice.

Fr. Ed

I THOUGHT YOU WOULD ENJOY THIS TRUE STORY BY FLOYD SHILANSKI:

“I gave a talk to high school students in a program designed to keep pregnant teens and troubled kids in school. I found it very difficult to address this multicultural group and talk about things that could motivate them for the future. I wasn’t making any headway until I started talking about what I do so well, helping people with money. I took out a stack of $2 bills and I started giving them out. The kids started to wake up because it was free money. The only thing I asked them after they took the money was not to spend it on themselves. I told them that they each had children that are unborn, and maybe if there is anything in this world that could help move them forward, it is the fact that someone cares enough to do this. Three days later, I received a crumpled piece of paper in the mail. It was from a girl who heard my talk. She wrote:

Dear Floyd,

“Than you very much for taking time to come and talk to my class. Thank you for giving me a crisp new $2 bill. I will cherish this forever and I have written my child’s name on it and it will never be used for anything else but something that she wants or needs. The reason I am writing you is because the day that you talked to our class I had made a decision that morning. I had cleaned out my desk, paid whatever bills I owed the school and I was going to take mine and my unborn child’s life because I really didn’t think anyone cared. The fact is I will probably stick around a while, because there are people like you that care about people like me that don’t even know me. Thanks for caring.”

Submitted by Paul Burch from correspondence sent to him from Fr. Scott Seethaler, CAP

The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God." Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself." - Lk 23:35-37

HANDBELL CONCERT SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11 - 2:00 PM

The Magna Campana Handbell Choir and the Bells of St. Timothy's handbell choir will perform a concert of Christmas music at St. Timothy in The Villages on Sunday afternoon, December 11 at 2:00 PM. This is the third time these two handbell

choirs have performed together. The program will include some traditional Christmas music as well as some secular and humorous songs. Magna Campana is in its fourth year of operation. The ringers come from a variety of church and community handbell choirs in Lake and Sumter counties. They are conducted by Jeffrey Shaw, Music Director of St. Paul's Church in Leesburg. The Bells of St. Timothy are part of the Music Ministry at St. Timothy and are under the direction of Melanie O'Donnell, Assistant Director of Music. Come out and enjoy the unusual treat of hearing two bell choirs performing together. Tickets for the concert are $5 and are available at St. Timothy Church.

THANKSGIVING DAY PRAYER

Lord, we thank you for the goodness of our people and for the spirit of justice that fills this nation. We thank you for the beauty and fullness of the land and the challenge of the cities. We thank you for our work and our rest, for one another, and for our homes. We thank you, Lord: accept our thanksgiving on this day. We pray and give thanks through Jesus Christ our Lord. R: Amen. —from Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers.

LIVING ADVENT WREATH

We will have a Living Advent Wreath. Beginning next week, November 27, please bring in green plants in no larger than a 4” pot to place on the altar to create a Living Advent Wreath.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE

Our giving tree for the poor and needy in our area will go up on the weekend of November 19/20 in the Narthex. For those who do not use this entrance, there will be tables set up in the North and South entrances of the church with tags on them. Each tag will have a number identifying the family, the first name and age of the child. Each child will have a

total of 4 tags on the tree, which includes: 2 separate tags for clothing; a tag for a $25 shoe gift card; a tag for a gift card or toy of their choice. It is very important that you tape the tag with the information face up on the top of the wrapped package or attach to the bike, then place them under or near the tree in the Narthex. Gift cards can be placed in the red box next to the tree. We request that once you take a tag, please make a copy of it, or write down the information, as we have no way to track lost tags without the family number and the child’s name. Please be advised that we are the only area organization that provides gifts to teenagers up to the age of 17. Please consider taking tags for these children as this may be the last Christmas they receive gifts. Also, it would be very helpful if each tag has a gift receipt enclosed in case the family needs to exchange the item, or in the case of gift cards, an “activation confirmation” and for Payless gift cards an “inquiry receipt”. The gifts need to be returned to the Giving Tree NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14. Thank you in advance for your generosity in supporting this most worthwhile project. If you have any question, please contact Peggy Harrop @ 751-5604.

sunshine and of shadow through which we have come, up to today.

We ask for forgiveness for any failure on our part; for any times when we became difficult to live with; for any lack of sympathy and understanding; for anything which spoiled even for a moment the perfect relationship which marriage should be. Spare us to each other to go on walking the way of life together, and grant that for us it may be true that the best is yet to be: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

NATIONAL FEAST The Continental Congress proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving in 1777. A somber event, it specifically recommended “that servile labor and such recreations (although at other times innocent) may be unbecoming the purpose of this appointment [and should] be

omitted on so solemn an occasion.” Presidents Washington, Adams and Monroe proclaimed national Thanksgivings, but the custom fell out of use by 1815, after which the celebration of the holiday was limited to individual state observances. By the 1850s, almost every state and territory celebrated Thanksgiving. Many people felt that this family holiday should be a national celebration, especially Sarah Josepha Hale, the influential editor of the popular women’s magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book. In 1827, she began a campaign to reinstate the holiday after the model of the first Presidents. She publicly petitioned several Presidents to make it an annual event. Sarah Josepha Hale’s efforts finally succeeded in 1863, when she was able to convince President Lincoln that a national Thanksgiving might serve to unite a war-torn country. The President declared two national Thanksgivings that year, one for August 6 celebrating the victory at Gettysburg and a second for the last Thursday in November. Neither Lincoln nor his successors, however, made the holiday a fixed annual event. A President still had to proclaim Thanksgiving each year, and the last Thursday in November became the customary date. In a controversial move, Franklin Delano Roosevelt lengthened the Christmas shopping season by declaring Thanksgiving for the next-to-the-last Thursday in November. Two years later, in 1941, Congress responded by permanently establishing the holiday as the fourth Thursday in the month.

PRIMARY SOURCES Very little is known about the 1621 event in Plymouth that is the model for our Thanksgiving. The only references to the event are reprinted below: “And God be praised we had a good increase… Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. At which time, amongst other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed on our governor, and upon the captain and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.” Edward Winslow, Mourt’s Relation: D.B. Heath, ed. Applewood Books. Cambridge, 1986. p 82 http://www.plimoth.org/learn/multimedia-reference-library/read-articles-and-writings/thanksgiving-history
