Conflict/Resolution

Please take out your notebooks in order to take notes over the

following information.

Character vs Character

This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with another character, human or not human.

Character vs Self

In this type of conflict, the main character experiences some kind of inner conflict.

Character vs Nature

This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with the forces of nature.

Character vs Society

This type of conflict has the main character in conflict with a larger group: a community, society, culture, etc.

Resolution

More often than not, a conflict in a story will have a resolution.

If a conflict is resolved, it means that the conflict has been settled.

Many times, we can predict what happens in the resolution of a story.

However, authors sometimes place plot twists in the story to surprise the reader.

You are home all alone one night, and you see the clouds in the sky start to look a little freaky. You turn on your television to the news station, and the weatherman is SCREAMING at the viewers to “TAKE SHELTER!!! IT’S A TORNADOOOOOOO!” You don’t have a basement in your house to take shelter, and there are many windows in your house. What type of conflict is this?

You are invited to go to the mall with a new group of friends from school. You don't know them that well, but are excited that they included you in their plans. When you go into a crowded music store, you think you see one of them slip a CD into a pocket without paying. What type of conflict is this?

Your middle school is much bigger than your elementary school. There you saw your best friend all the time. Now you don't have any classes together and you hardly see each other at school, except at lunch. Your friend seems to be making a whole new group of friends that you don't know. Today at lunch, for the first time, your friend is sitting with some new friends. When you walk by with your lunch, your friend doesn't ask you to sit down as usual. What type of conflict is this?

You love your caffeine. You want to be able to drink soda pop in the classroom, but it is against school policy. You feel as though you have the right to drink any soda you want, for it is your body and health concern. However, the administration and faculty at your school denies you access to your sugar craving. What type of conflict is this?

Your Turn!!

On a separate piece of paper to turn in, think of four different scenarios that involve one of the four types of conflict we covered.

You must write 3-5 full and complete sentences telling an imaginary story that contains one of the types of conflict we covered. The final sentence should state which type of conflict is most prevalent.
