SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Reading I: Leviticus 19: 1-2,17-18 Reading II: 1 Corinthians 3:16-23 Gospel: Matthew 5:38-48 The first sentence of the reading from Leviticus and the last sentence from the Gospel offer a striking parallel: Be holy as God is holy. This is the context in which we should hear Jesus’ words in the Gospel. By human standards, what he asks is indeed foolish. But his call is to abandon our human perspective and to take on the perspective of God. We are called to love as God loves—”for his sun rises on the bad and the good.” Not only may this call seem foolish to us, but it may also seem impossible. Who can love like this? We might remember Jesus’ words to his disciples when they were shocked by another one of his teachings: “Nothing is impossible with God.” We are called not only to love as God loves, but to love with God’s love.

We look forward to welcoming Bishop Jenky on Thursday evening for the sacrament of Confirmation. Please keep our eighth grade students who are to be confirmed in your prayers this week. This is a good opportunity to note that the Church desires that every Catholic receive this sacrament. If, for any reason, you were not confirmed when you were younger, please contact me and I will help make arrangements for you to be confirmed. Last weekend, many people registered for our Lenten program, Good News People. Participants will spend time each week during Lent to focus on prayer, reading of Scripture, discussion, and putting into action the Gospel. GoodNewsPeople, a dynamic parish-wide faith for-mation program by JustFaith Ministries, offers a way to engage Catholics seeking to deepen their under-standing and practice of their faith. GoodNewsPeople includes 7 2-hour sessions, a break and another 7 weeks if there is interest by the group. Each session includes prayer, reflection on the Scrip-tures (lectio divina), and discussion. It is a great op-portunity to meet people in the parish as well as a chance to have a specific commitment to Lent. There will be a focus on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.
St. Thomas Parish is offering this program during Lent and following. We will have small groups, facilitated by two peo-
ple. Meeting will be weekly for 2 hours. Time/place decided by group. Materials are provided (small fee for each partici-
pant). Great opportunity to know other people and learn more about Scripture and stories of faith in our Church teachings and their impact in our daily lives. Sign up after Masses February 19 weekend in lower level of church.

Tuition assistance scholarship grants from the endowment fund established as a result of the dio-cese of Peoria Rooted In Faith Campaign and named in honor of Archbishop Spalding, the first Bishop of Peoria, will be available for the 2017-18 school year for students enrolled in or intending to enroll in grades Kindergarten through 12 in any Catholic school located in the diocese of Peoria whose families are active members of a Catholic parish in the diocese. All grants will be based on financial need objectively as-sessed. Information about the grants and application material may be obtained from any Catholic elemen-tary or secondary school in the diocese of Peoria or on the diocesan website [email protected] under Catholic Education and then under Financial Assistance.. Con-sult the detailed protocols and procedures and check-list for all requirements necessary to be eligible for an award. Parents are encouraged to apply online at online.factmgt.com/aid.
