Dear Colleagues and Friends:

It is our honor to welcome you to the 2018 Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference (SSEC) and the 30th Anniversary of the first conference focused on our region!

With a theme of “Ecosystem Recovery in an International Transboundary System,” our goal is to disregard borders and foster a collaborative commitment among all those involved in better understanding the challenges and opportunities to restore and enhance the social, ecological, and economic health of the entire Salish Sea ecosystem.

Every two years, the SSEC brings together approximately 1,500 scientists, First Nations and Tribal government representatives, resource managers, community and business leaders, conservationists, educators, students, and policy-makers from Coast Salish territories, British Columbia, Washington State, and beyond. We recognize the knowledge, ways of knowing, and culture of the Coast Salish peoples. We share insights, understanding and innovation of this special transboundary place that unifies the people and the waterways of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Strait of Georgia, and Puget Sound.

Special conference features include a traditional welcome from Chairman Leonard Forsman of the Suquamish Tribe and Ray Harris of the Chemainus First Nation; the opening keynote by Sally Jewell, who served as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior under President Obama; a plenary featuring Washington State Governor Jay Inslee, the second Billy Frank Jr. Plenary session; and the Coast Salish Gathering Dinner.

This printed program includes an overview of the conference, with a pullout “sessions at-a-glance.” To continue efforts to green this conference, please download the free Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference smartphone app for full program details.

We hope you will take advantage of the many opportunities throughout the conference to connect with colleagues and make new acquaintances. Thank you for your participation, and enjoy the conference!
