Putting Commuter Transport Plans Into Practice- Ten Simple Implementation Plans

October 20, 2005 was ‘car-free day’, intended to promote the use of public transport. . There will be another car-free day this year. What immediate actions can planners and operators take to ensure that each successive annual car-free day sees a public transport system better than the year before? In this workshop, Paul Browning will offer solutions he has learned over a lifetime career in public transport. He will move away from the ‘grand plan’ framework to practical solutions which are incremental , self-testing, and which can be implemented the right away.By attending this workshop you will:• Discover what the commuter really wants• Learn about low-cost ways of introducing Bus Rapid Transit• Understand the complex nature of the taxi industry• See the subsidy question in a new light• Be introduced to ways of restraining the peak-hour use of the

private car You will be able to go back to your desk and:• Look at your day-to-day transport planning in a new light• Develop short-term programmes for better transport service

delivery

A Practical Guide To Creating Efficient Commuter Communication Systems

In all social and economic endeavours efficient communication is critical to successful outcome, and a common understanding. Public transport scheduling management is critical in order for the individual end-user [commuter] to plan and organize their journey. It is also, very important for the national economy that workers and students do not spend a substantive period of their productive time of the day waiting endlessly, for public transport that never arrive or arrives very late. On the other hand, public transport scheduling is very much dependent on the state of the road and rail infrastructure – which does need serious attention. Scheduling management also has an impact on the mental health of the public transport end-users [commuters].To address the issue of efficient commuter communication systems, SANCOC is establishing together with our partners – an integrated multimode communication platform using the application of the latest cellular telephony technology, linking and integrating [communication wise] the following transportation value chain stakeholders:• Commuters in all mode of travel• Minibus Taxis Operators• Bus Service Operators• Railway Service Operators• Private Vehicle Commuters• Other Road Users• Air Travel Commuters• Emergency Services Providers• Law Enforcement• Government

By attending this workshop you will learn how to:• Maintain constant communication with your customer base• Improve customer relations• Achieve customer retention in your sector• Market your services efficientlyYou will be able to go back to your desk and:• Be able to monitor how you are perceived in the market place• Be able to establish service levels of your operations• Keep up to date with the movements of demand for your services• Establish a database of frequently reported incidents of you

operation – and seek to address these.Pascall Moloi, President and CEO SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL COMMUTERS COUNCIL

ABOUT YOUR WORKSHOP LEADERA born and bred Sowetan, Pascall Moloi has conducted extensive research on public transport and its impact on South Africaís economic development His focus has been largely on how regional integration of public transport systems affects commuters. Pascall Moloi’s aim is to improve public transport systems with a vision towards a fully developed country within the next 15 years.

Amongst several qualifications, he holds a BBA in Business Strategy and Organisation from New York University, USA. As the President and CEO of the

South African National Commuters’ Council (SANCOC), he has positioned the council strategically and tactically as one of the key drivers of the improvement and growth of the public transport sector.

Mr Moloi was previously the Managing Director of Sechaba Projects Associates until he founded SANCOC in 2005.

Dear Commuter Transport Professional

FAST FACT ONE: 64% of the South African population use taxis and yet

there is no subsidy for them (SA National Travel Survey, 2005)

FAST FACT TWO: 14% of South African trip makers spend more than

1hour per trip – 73 minutes by train, 49 minutes by taxi, 25 minutes by

car (SA National Travel Survey, 2005)

FAST FACT THREE: 80% of South African public transport must be

compliant with the new operating licence system by 2009
