The strategic direction for the CCSSA was the
topic under discussion at the recent Council
Indaba. Discussions on the matter took place
against the backdrop of the Society’s vision and
aims as espoused in the new Constitution
Impact Analysis of Factors:
In analysing the impact of various factors on the
Society, Councillors considered the macro-
environment (political, economic, socio-cultural,
technological, regulatory & demographic); the
micro-env ironment (service providers ,
intermediaries, patients, competitors & public) and
the internal environments (stakeholders,
objectives, culture, structure & resources). While
none of the factors received negative consensus,
there was consensus that technology (macro) and
the internal environment (stakeholders, objectives,
structure and resources) fell firmly within the
positive category.
The next part of the exercise involved identifying
the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and
threats related to the Society and cross tabulating
these to reveal the proactive potential of the
Society - essential for its growth, and the reactive
potential when faced with these threats.
Key strengths identified, include:
Diversity (multi-disciplinary) – inclusivity
Financial resources
Relationships (e.g. with industry, expats,
etc.)
Meetings (refreshers and congress)
Culture of the Society
Collaborations & connections (especially
international)
Operational structure
Identified opportunities include:
Public health education and marketing
‘Clean up’ of private practice
Government engagement (via presidential
health summit war room)
Research vacuum
This way, the Society’s strengths can be used to
fulfil its opportunities, optimizing potential and
ensuring growth. These would include, for exam-
ple:
Using financial resources, relationships and
diversity to explore the research vacuum.
Use relationships to improve engagement
with government/departments.
Use financial resources, diversity and
connectivity/culture to maximize public
health education and marketing to the
general public. Raising awareness around
intensivists and their role.
Use of connectivity and relationships to
commence the difficult process of private
practice ‘clean-up’.
The above activities will assist in improving
the critical care landscape
By cross tabulating the strengths with the threats,
the reactive potential may be identified and
strategic initiatives put in place to manage this.
These include:
Using relationships to engage with external
regulatory bodies
Managing the brand and marketing.
Address transformation through, e.g. men-
torships.
Address the lack of human resources
through relationships with government
Attention must be given to the future of
the discipline and to career paths. Issues
such as the diploma need to be addressed
and additional courses, e.g. ECMO courses
should be explored.
From this discussion, a list of deliverables will be
extracted and timelines set so that Council may be
measured against these objectives in 2020.

It is a privilege to have been awarded hosting of the 7th Annual
SWAAC ELSO congress. We have been making great strides to or-
ganize this prestigious meeting to be held at the Indaba Hotel in
Fourways on the 21st and 22st of February 2020. SWAAC ELSO
is the fastest growing chapter of ELSO and the program promises to
have a large international contingent sharing their experiences and
knowledge with local role players.
The national academic program committee is in the final stages of con-
cluding the program which promises to be stimulating, educational and
interactive. Several pre-congress workshops are envisaged which in-
clude didactic lectures and hands on interactions with wet lab simula-
tions. We are continuously updating our website and have now opened the registration and abstracts. For more information
please visit https://www.swaacelso2020.co.za
We look forward to hosting you at this meeting and to share our national experience in this “advanced critical care” setting.
This will also be a good platform to discuss barriers in the delivery of high quality ECLS and to strategize the way forward to
ensure equitable and sustainable ECMO delivery in South Africa.
