President& CEO ReportThis year has been nothing short of surprising and certainly nothing that a crystal ball could have predicted. 2019- 2020 President and CEO Report is a mix of challenges, resilience, and surprising outcomes.

Our year started with great optimism after another positive operating year which saw the Y revisit the Strategic Plan and embark on investment in current operations.

January saw Victoria ravaged by bushfires across much of the east coast and the impact of poor visible and slower than normal accommodation bookings presented some challenges to ensure communities most affected could be supported.

Then came COVID-19!

A once in hundred-year pandemic that questioned everything we knew and loved.

COVID challenged us to think outside our normal operations for opportunities to pivot our business models.

• Using our catering capacity to produce homemade biscuits for the café market

• Tendered for catering contracts, while unsuccessful we certainly identified capacity for growth

• Advocacy and lobbying government throughout the shutdown to be considered in the support packages and addressing unintented consequences for not for profit sector in the implementation of Job Keeper.

• Switching our business model to online and quickly rolling out Gymnastics via Zoom

• Working in partnership with Golden Plains Shire to develop online content that connected children and young people throughout lockdown 1 with the Backyard Boredom Buster series.

• Reaching out to the Bushfire Recovery Authority to assist with short term accommodation and respite.

• Created connection with DHHS, Emergency Management Victoria and Barwon Health for emergency accommodation should the need arise.

• Within three days of closing Care Packs were delivered to every employee.

• Mother’s Day was not missed, when we assisted a local shop keeper to relocation her operations for Mother Day to Bannockburn Recreation Centre and offered a drive through contact less collection point.

The challenges of this year were difficult and at times it seemed in surmountable but somehow YMCA Geelong adopted, transformed and possible now, we are better for it.

...Crisis creates opportunity and this shows how we saw the world of the Y....

Heartbreak, devastation & new opportunies...We were heartbroken by the deaths of two young men, Tom Barnett (16) and Abe Knox (15) who were members of the YMCA. During this time, our people and members were supported through this difficult time by YMCA Australia National Safeguarding Unit.

With the winding up of the Y Service Club of Geelong in July 2019, YMCA Geelong has agreed to continue the tradition of the Carols by Candlelight in Johnston Park.

Noel Hooper has been coordinating the event for the best part of 48 years as is assisting us with the transition. Unfortunately, this year’s event will not be live due to COVID but with the support of Chris Morton (Musical Director), Gail Burrows (Choir Director), David Fox (Production Director) and the support from the Palais Theater Geelong the event has been pre-recorded and will air on Channel 31 this year.

We acknowledge that the mental wellbeing of young people is at a critical point in our community and much work needed to be done to address the needs of young people.

The appointment of a Well-being Coordinator, Shani Cassin in the last financial year was indeed a great initiative and as a result upskilling of our staff and athletes to recognise, discuss and addressed mental well-being is at the core of our sport delivery.

The closing of all operations was nothing short of devastating for our members, community and staff. From the 17th March 2020 the things we held as important such as connection, participation and social interaction were being taken away.

One of the toughest days in the Y history was the 23rd March when we were forced to stand down 90% of our workforce.

The relentlessness of COVID-19 had brought on uncertain. No one had planned for health crisis of the size or magnitude and the effects were across the entire community, state and country.

Crisis creates opportunity and this is how we saw the world of the Y. We had a significantly reduced capacity in our workforce however as Job Keeper was rolled out nationwide it brought optimism and hope to the team.

Looking at the Y, what we do, and how we do it throughout the pandemic has been a gift.

We utilised the lockdown from 17th March to the 23rd June 2020 to complete some capital improvements to the facilities;

• Camp Wyuna completed the Staff Room build and fit out

• Newtown had new carpets installed.

Without the fantastic support from Geelong based Godfrey Hirst Carpets this project would not have occurred at this time. Ashley McDonald and the team at Godfrey Hirst were amazing in leading the project.

• North Geelong gymnastic floor was upgraded

• Newtown Heating & Air-conditioning Project was commissioned on 7th December 2019 and a welcome addition to facility

• Recreation Gymnastics launched for our members on an online platform as did the Competitive gymnastics program.

The transition to re-opening the facilities after 23 June was met with great excitement and energy and the recreation part of the business was starting to feel alive once more with the voices of young people and coaches re-connecting in person.

The body of work undertaken by the staff was unbelievable. We have a small team of permanent staff and only seven full time positions across the entire YMCA. The work required the development of COVID Safe environment, systems and training, the turnaround time and changing nature of the government announcements made it challenging with not all business able to re-open due to restrictions.

But we did it!

As parents adapted to the changing nature of not being able to see their kids play sport or train, they knew that the safety of the children was, is and will always be their children. The happiness and joy seen on the kids’ faces was acknowledgement enough that the YMCA really does impact the community.

While this joy was short lived the recreation businesses closed again on 6th August and have re-opened under restrictions on maximum of 20 people indoor recreation on 28th October. This time we also saw Camp Wyuna re-open and Schools permitted to return under restriction from 12th October.

Our partnership with YMCA Whittlesea and Victoria in the ownership of YMCA Learning Communities Ltd that provides early learning, swim school and community hubs also was impacted throughout COVID however with government support and easing of restrictions from 21 July 2020, this entity began to trade and numbers of attendees at the early learning centre’s slowly returned as parents and carers returned to work.

This has been a positive investment in YMCA Geelong’s future as it continues to grow it will provide returns to the Geelong community for re-investment.

So now we look to the future!

That we need to grow and diversify our core business in order to be sustainable and remain essential to the community fabric

That we are adaptable

That more than ever young people in our community need to be inspired, connected and listened to.

That mental wellbeing at the Y is just and important to us as physical well-being.

We are approaching the next two years as a rebuilding phase of the Y. An opportunity to change, adapt and transform what we do and ensure that we continue to put the customer, children and young people at the centre of the decision making process.

The formation of a National Safeguarding Unit through the financial support of all YMCA Associations has stood up a team of staff that have tremendous skills and experience to support Associations as we continue to be the leaders in the sport, recreation and community programs that keep children and young people safe.

Under the leadership of John Weigl and the Board members Kate Bibby, Steve D’Andre, Bianca Paridaen, Vesna Allan and Natalie McColl, Brandon Howard (Ex-Officio) and acknowledging Jen MacFarlane and Owen Kelso who both resigned from the Board during the financial year their community contribution and willingness to share their knowledge, their skills and to provide great stewardship and governance of our organisation is testimony to the value that the YMCA brings to the Geelong region.

Thank you to Vesna Allan and Shona Eland who have both served as Director and Treasurer on the YMCA Learning Communities Ltd Board. This is a significant investment for YMCA Geelong and the governance oversight has been of great benefit to the success of the business.

Thank you also to the Deputy Presidents in the past year who have been on a development pathway through the governance of our Association.

A special thank you to John Weigl.

John has served the YMCA since being elected in 2009 and will be stepping down as President as his term expires at the 2020 AGM.

John has been served as Deputy President and President over a four-year period and has lead the Board and Y from a period of financial hardship to one that has improved operational performance and greater connection with the community and the broader YMCA Movement.

He led the strategic partnership in 2016 with YMCA Whittlesea and Victoria for a 26-year investment early learning, and community hubs. John also served as a Director of YMCA Learning Communities Ltd from 2016-2019 as it established its operations.

We also acknowledge the work of Kate Bibby who also comes to the end of her term after servicing three terms and providing nine years’ service, support and advice to our Association.

Kate has filled the roll of President 2014-2016, Deputy President 2018-2019 and Acting President in 2019. Kate has provided advise and support to which we are most grateful.

YMCA Geelong is a charitable, not for profit incorporated association or as we like to say “For Purpose” community organisation. Through our programs and services to the greater Geelong region we provide our community with an opportunity to be healthier, happier and connected.

The YMCA is a global organisation that works locally to development stronger communities through leadership opportunities partnering with other community, private and government organisations and address social change in over 120 countries worldwide.

Each Y looks and feels a little different, that’s because we have different community needs, but we all aspire to make a difference and delivery on our Mission.

Formally established in Geelong in 1953, YMCA Geelong currently own Newtown Stadium and operate businesses at North Geelong Arena and YMCA Camp Wyuna at Queenscliff and manage Bannockburn Recreation Centre & Bannockburn Community Sports Stadium in partnership with the Golden Plains Shire.

YMCA Geelong also operates a range of community programs and services within the City of Greater Geelong.

The Challenges of COVID-19Wellbeing Coordinator, Shani Cashin

The way we have responded to the challenges COVID-19 has presented us with has shown the strong sense of community we have, and the values that drive us.

Not only have we found ways to keep connected with our members, we have strengthened our connections with many of them; helping entire families find their way through the tough times, providing physical and social outlets, things to look forward to each week and ways for kids to continue to achieve and have something to celebrate.

We have worked and adjusted with families to provide the best experience we could for their children. Importantly, we have had some gymnasts who couldn’t come to gymnastics when the YMCA reopened the first time after lockdown, and even recently in this second reopening.

We have kept them engaged and a part of this community. It was not just our staff, but our other members that also reached out and asked what they could do, which speaks volumes to the culture our members have within the Y.

...It was wonderful to see the impact just a few extra connections had, even online....

The Challenges of COVID-19There were two gymnasts who lived in Wyndham and were unable to travel for their favourite sport, that they dedicated so much time to.

We chose to continue running zoom classes for them to connect with their friends, we ran private lessons for them with different coaches whilst they were at Newtown and had their teammates pop in to say ‘hi’. We connected them into our pilates class so they could join in with their teammates. It was wonderful to see the impact just a few extra connections had, even just online.

Then when we came out of Lockdown 2.0, these girls were still unable to travel, so we have been running sessions locally to them, getting them out and about and doing their sport. After 8-9 months of being the only ones in their team restricted this way, there was a high chance they would finish up and become disconnected. But both are returning and are so excited to see their friends and be back with their team.

There was another gymnast who wasn’t able to train outside after lockdown 2.0 due to living with a high risk person. Coaches accommodated her into another group on the days her group trained outside, so she could still do gymnastics and train.

Not only was it wonderful to have her still be connected with the club, but the gymnasts themselves were very welcoming and again showed the great values our community has.

Some gymnasts were unable to do online training, however they are returning and that shows they still feel a part of our community and connected with us.

I’ve attached some lovely messages I got from some parents over this time, I think the overwhelming theme from these, is that many families have felt a deeper connection with each other, but also with the YMCA.

We have worked through the hard times together and the consistency of having Gymnastics as part of their routine every week helped. And the fact we could provide these young people with feelings of success and achievement cannot be underrated, they didn’t have the same opportunities to feel those positive feelings, it was special to be able to provide that to them and their families.

I read these messages and I feel so proud of the people in the Y, and the members we have, it really is a special community.”

I really just wanted to say such a big thank you to all of you for getting this up and running. In such uncertain and challenging times for the kids (well all of us really) this program provides them with some sense of normality, an opportunity to keep connected with their peers and coaches.

It provides them with the ability to keep active (as we know, so good for mental and physical health) and to escape for hours of the day (doing what they love and are so passionate about) from this crazy world we find ourselves in right now.

So ladies, well done on all of your hard work and also the encouragement that you continue to provide.

Just wanted to let you know how impressed we have been by what you have been able to do with the kids remotely.

Creative! It’s great at seeing the gym hosts as a whole person and not just the ‘gymnast’ we are pretty lucky to be involved with a club with that view! I also think (from what I’ve seen and know of her!!)

Gymnastics has been one aspect of my child’s life that has remained constant through all this virus stuff and it’s great to know that she is with some ‘really good people and roles models’ (both staff and gymnasts).

So please keep doing what you do as it’s really working for our little lady and don’t hesitate to let me know if there is anything else we can do to support this whole process!! Thanks!!

Supporting People at BannockburnAlthough COVID-19 has put a strain both financially and mentally on our community members and staff, YMCA Bannockburn were able to pull through and work together to be able to open the stadium doors for the remainder of 2020 (fingers crossed!)

Our members have not only provided our staff with friendly supporting comments, they have also helped reshape the upcoming programs Bannockburn will welcome in the new year.

Bannockburn Management have worked very closely with staff in providing ongoing training and wellbeing support to welcome back everyone with ease.

2020 has been a very difficult year for all but with the help, guidance and support from other management teams from different sites, we stepped up, stepped out of our comfort zones and have been providing the amazing customer service and programs we know we can!

This year has taught us here at YMCA Bannockburn that when we stick together we can achieve greatness!

Over the past 66 years Camp Wyuna has been a site to connect people with people, and service a wide ranging community of such diversity. We have catered for groups from…

· Schools· Sports Groups & Teams· Arts, Crafts & Music· Families & Community· Religious· Cultural, Immigrant & Diversity

All these groups have been from various social and economic backgrounds and to that extent Camp Wyuna has been a hub to bring the members of each group together. Who knows the numbers of camper, volunteers, Y staff and leaders have come through from varied communities and families, all connecting on this wonderful piece of land. A piece of land that had visiting groups for centuries before the Y.

In the 2019/2020 Camp Wyuna had a great 9 months of solid bookings and looking forward to a solid year. We all know what March 17th brought to us and its impacts. However, from this situation we also extended ourselves out to the Whittlesea Y and five camps of young people with a disability in April, May and June that had a wonderful Respite Camp with their awesome carer’s.

Overall and needless to say a very challenging year for the team, but in all we have concluded the year on June 30th with a strong and cohesive team.

For the fifth year Camp Wyuna hosted the 2019 Point Lonsdale Cadet and Surf Bronze Camps. Imagine 100, 13 to 17 year olds training to be Surf Life Guards and entering a world of volunteering to save live, educate beach goers about our surf beaches and be a part of a huge movement that is so Australian.

Over the five years we have assisted some 500 plus candidates and supported 150 instructors and assessors within the borough of Queenscliff.

This positive, community camp is a highlight for us as we are truly supporting the community and we are empowering these you boys and girls to be pillars in our community.

Many of these young people have gone on to be professional life guards, and be a big part of our community here in Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale.

We look forward to many more bronze and Cadet Camps as from this six day camp their lives change as they go back into their communities and be a contributing member.

School HolidayProgram Successes2019-2020 has been an amazing year for our School Holiday Program at the Y.

We are lucky enough that our programs have run all the way through COVID-19. Even though at times we had to cap our numbers to keep everyone safe we have still had amazing fun filled programs.

We have definitely missed our excursions but the team have worked together to make each day more fun and exciting as the one before.

Feedback from nearly every family involved was how grateful they were that we kept our program running and at least one aspect of their children’s lives had some normality.

The children themselves thrived on having social interactions with their friends and it was beautiful to hear YMCA Newtown filled with laughter.

In October of 2018, YMCA Geelong received some wonderful news that we were successful in receiving a $200,000 grant from the Pick My Project Funding to put heating and cooling in our 50 year old building at Newtown.

The heating and cooling system was to be used throughout the stadium to help warm and cool our gymnasium and basketball courts on those extreme weather days.

It was something all our staff, coaches and members had been waiting a long time to happen and we can now proudly say it has all been completed and installed.

Thank you to everyone involved, it was much appreciated and will be enjoyed by all for years to come!

The Voice ofYoung PeopleWhen a seemingly shy 17 year old who volunteers at the Y speaks we listen. Not always is she confident to say what she thinks but her writing is empowering.This year Alyssa, had her voice heard when she published her story DREAMS to REALITY in the ABC Heywire competition.Heywire puts young Australians at the centre of the conversations that shape their communities.The ABC has run the annual regional youth project in partnership with the Australian Government since 1998.

Dreams to Reality

My life isn’t something that many people would find interesting, I’m the type of person who’s just a background character in their own story. That’s like saying your favourite fictional protagonist in any book or comic comes to life and decides they wanted to be in a live show about their life and they got the role of playing tree number three. Though saying this wouldn’t it be cool if you’re favourite protagonist came to life? It would be a dream come true!Dreams. A good way to transition, I have dreams just like any background character. Dreams just out of my reach to become a reality. My problem is I have just sat back and waited for something to walk past and not actually doing something. Now you’re probably expecting me to write something along these lines: “After realising I’ve wasted the first seventeen years of my life, I flipped the switch and became the confident hard-working student I am today and you can be just like me if you work hard enough!” and then I’ll start advertising some weird learning product.I can’t speak for other people who might be in the same situation as me but for me I can say it isn’t easy to try and become the best you can be. I’m still the same shy character I am and maybe I’ll always be like this and that’s okay - what matters is trying. It’s easy to watch your life slip away and trying and make every single day better than the last is a near impossible challenge but if you don’t you’ll always be wondering if you could have made your days better than the last.

Now I’ve probably bored you at this point personally I’ve bored myself. I had this whole other draft with an elephant who would only speak in rhymes. My aunt would say I have a habit of starting things and never finish them because I was scared. Scared of what? My subconscious won’t tell me. But recently I have been trying to push myself to finish one of my personal projects I probably would have given up by now if it wasn’t for her or my mum. Both incredible women who will always have my back and with people like that I’m determined to make them proud it may take me a couple of tries to get where I want to be but as long as I try I know one day I’ll make it.

We want to stand with you as you share your voice, and our team is committed to making sure that you are supported from submission to publication and beyond.WhyNot is about creating a safe space for young people to share and feel empowered. We understand that many of our contributors might be uni students, have multi hustles (side or otherwise) or are at the start of their freelancing careers. Irrelevant of if it’s your first or one-hundredth published piece, we want to help get your foot in the door of publication.WhyNot is committed to paying a minimum of ten young people $125 per published piece each month. It is important to note that we are unable to pay for all contributions, or submissions. YMCA Gymnastics ClubThe Gymnastics Fundraising Committee conducted a number of events during the year to help raise funds for new equipment for our gymnasiums.

The committee organised fun and engaging events ranging from the YMCA Spectacular which is an inhouse gymnastics competition for our MAG and WAG athletes to participate in, it is a fun competition with the athletes dressing up with their team colours and performing their amazing routines. This event has really brought our boys and girls closer and promotes club unity and team work. This is an event our athletes really look forward to each year.

The committee also ran a Trivia Night to engage our parents in a fun social night out which proved to be a great success. Other events organised this year included fun outings to Super tramp, BBQs at competitions and our famous end of year ‘Presentation Night’ for all of our competitive athletes.

Our small committee has worked extremely hard to provide opportunities for our members not just those in gymnastics and though this year has been interrupted by COVID 19 and its restrictions we still managed to raise $10,242 for the financial year which is a huge achievement.

So far the money raised has gone towards replacing two metal high bars at both centres as well as getting some new mats for all our athletes to utilise.

IDS GymnasticsHead Coach, Rhian Jamieson

This past year has seen many challenges and achievements for the IDS team but we continue to build and develop.

We welcomed the wonderful Shani Cashin to the IDS staff team in a full time role. Shani is responsible for the day to day operations of group 3 and 4. Her supporting role is as YMCA Geelong’s Wellbeing Officer, a new position created to support staff and athletes in and out of their training.

We also welcomed back Mila Blyth and Elly Bayes in a coaching capacity. Both of these young ladies were in the pilot group for our first ILP group and went onto to represent our club, State and Australia.

We are so pleased to have them back in their home gym sharing their experiences and knowledge with future generations.

IDS Gymnastics Competition Results

· August 2019 - Gymnastics Victoria State Team Championships: YMCA Geelong were crowned Level 7 Champions with a mixed group of ALP and IDS squad gymnasts.

· September 2019 – Gymnastics Australia National Clubs Carnival in Queensland.

· Our level 8 under team jumped a level and had a great experience competing against much older and more experienced gymnasts. After 2 days of competition they were delighted to take home a Bronze medal on beam.

· 6 YMCA Geelong athletes competed in the Australian Classic the High Performance section of the event. A 3 – 4 day training and competing experience for out athletes saw many personal best performances and new skills.

· Asher Bayles competing in the Future International division finished 3rd All Around, 3rd Vault, 3rd on floor. (see photo). Airez Coyle placed 2nd floor.

· We had a positive start to 2020 with our Level 8 under athletes dominating AA in selection Trial1. Vivian Bayles in 1st, Charli Cox in 2nd and Sage Dennis in 3rd.

· 6 YMCA Geelong athletes competed in the Australian Classic the High Performance section of the event. A 3 – 4 day training and competing experience for out athletes saw many personal best performances and new skills.

· We positive start to 2020 with our Level 8 under athletes dominating AA in selection Trial1. Vivian Bayles in 1st, Charli Cox in 2nd and Sage Dennis in 3rd.

· 3 athletes were selected for National Camps based on their National performances in 2019: Asher Bayles in Junior and Hannah Hobday and Isobel Vagg at Team Future Advance.

· April 2020 saw the beginning of our online coaching program, we are so proud of the effort, resilience and spirit the gymnasts have shown during this challenging time.

Further fantastic results continued through the year with our Level 6’s at Victorian Championships in November 2019 held at the Geelong Arena.

Men’s Artistic GymnasticsMAG Coordinator, Daniel Tabone

Junior Victorian State Championships, held in November 2019, was a standout event for our junior athletes. Andre competed in level 1 and placed 3rd all-around with a 1st on Floor and Vault and 3rd on Rings and Parallel bars.

Our Level 3 Under team placed second all around in the state, with strong and consistent routines.

The 2020 MAG Summer camp held early January was a great success for our club. We had six Victorian Clubs participate in our camp as well as our own YMCA Geelong athletes.

The camp was split over two weeks and was full of fun team bonding activities, beach fitness, intense training within the gym and mentor sessions from some of the top coaches in the State. All athletes and coaches involved in the camp stayed at our amazing facilities at Camp Wyuna. It was the highlight of the year for our MAG athletes and coaches.

Our senior athletes had a great start to the year, achieving lots of new skills and started off the competition session with huge individual results. Unfortunately, the competition season was cut short due to COVID but they have continued to stay positive and active.

Another standout for the MAG Program is the resilience that has been shown by our athletes and coaches through this challenging time of COVID/Lockdown. The boys have and continue to support each other while on zoom and through our introduction to outdoor training with the hope we can get back into the gym soon.

YMCA Basketball ClubPresident, YMCA Basketball Club, Craig Herbert

2020 has been a year like no other with effectively no basketball played, apart from a brief 3-week stint during the year for the last 8 months.

Leading into the COVID shutdown of indoor stadiums the YMCA Basketball Club had experienced unprecedented growth with an increase to 60 teams entered in the 2019/2020 Summer season. This represents an increase of over 28% in team numbers over the past 3 years, and one that was going to continue into the 2020 Winter season prior to its cancellation.

The Club was awarded the Geoff Smith Shield at the end of 2019, as the most successful club in Geelong Basketball, which was a significant achievement and great recognition for the many volunteers who work so hard for the club.

2019 saw the joint awarding of the Basketballer of The Year award, to Matt Benning and Jason Riches who became the first joint winners of the clubs most prestigious award since 1975.

Both Matt and Jason have been tremendous stalwarts of our club for over 25 years.

In mid-2020, the Club appointed highly respected junior coach David Herbert as a Coaching mentor for the club, but unfortunately due to the COVID restrictions preventing teams playing, it has meant that a lot of the work that David had planned has been held over to the competition resumption.

We all have our fingers crossed that basketball is set to resume in the next few weeks, and for all of those involved in the club, it cannot happen soon enough.

YMCA Australia Volunteer Awards 2020Noel Hooper 2020 YMCA Australia Volunteer Awards

Noel joined the YMCA Youth Clubs in 1959 and has been an active contributor as a volunteer Board member as well as his significant contribution to the hosting and co-ordination of the Geelong Carols by Candlelight in Johnstone Park.

This event is one of the Geelong communities most notable community events and for an amazing 48 years Noel has been the driving force.

This year due to COVID-19 we are unable to host the event live, however in a pre-recorded event at the Palais Theatre Geelong the Carols will be brought in the living rooms of the Victorians on Channel 31 on Christmas Eve.

The event showcases Geelong’s young talent and thanks to the work of Noel and his team of volunteers, it is a tradition that will continue for future generations

Treasurers ReportIn a year where budgets and business plans became obsolete due to COVID- 19 pandemic the response of the Management Team to reduce the financial impact, protect the businesses and ensure our people and members were cared for the outcome of the Financial Statement is to be commended.

The significant impact of COVID on the operations meant that;

Newtown Stadium & North Geelong

Operations closed on 23rd March - 23rd June and 6th August - 28th October.

The business was creative in it approach to online gymnastics coaching. While the Recreation program was not as successful as the Competitive Program it provided our current members with the opportunity to stay connected and retain fitness levels.

The overwhelming Zoom burnout in the last 6 months has certainly seen the eager return to the Competitive Gymnastics when we eventually reopened.

Community Programs

Vacation Care was the only service classed as an essential service through the Government COVID restrictions and while we had to limitations in terms of families that were eligible for the service we remained operational through the shutdown periods.

Bannockburn Recreation Centers

Closed from 23rd March and re-opened indoors on 23 June to 20 people only with no contact sports which is 50% of the business operations. It closed again on 6th August and re-opened to 20 children indoors on 28th October 2020.

Camp Wyuna

Operations ceased 17th March and re-opened 12th October to heavy restricted operation that include One camp at a time and limited numbers effectively reducing the revenue capacity to 25% of normal operations.

Federal and State Government support has been essential in the reducing the impact of the closures.

More than 50% of employees were eligible for Job Keeper, we have secured Cashflow Boost, Childcare Special Circumstances funding, Department of Jobs Precinct and Regions Business Survival Grants as well as significant Rent relief from the City of Greater Geelong and Borough of Queenscliff.

Throughout the financial year YMCA Geelong has also been able to pay $150,000 remaining on the business loan associated with the redevelopment of Newtown Stadium Mezzanine floor and Camp Wyuna redevelopment.

Apart from the grants, government support assistance all revenue has been generated from the member’s participant fees, and accommodation bookings which is significantly down on previously years’ operations.

The effects of COVID on the business will be a long term matter that will require investment in new systems, processes in order to comply with the COVID Safe requirements. This will have an impact on the bottom line as increased cleaning, monitoring and provision of COVID Marshals at each site will be factored in the going operations.

The operating deficit was ($73,745)

Geelong and District YMCA Youth Services operations accept DRG Grants and in return provides services through YMCA Geelong inter-entity agreement. The operations of this entity in 2019-2020 was a donation from YMCA Geelong to offset the staffing costs.

The operating surplus was $3,012.00

YMCA Learning Communities Ltd for the year ending 2020 delivered a net surplus of $2.05m.

The net surplus margin increased from 4% at 30 June 2019 to 11% at 30 June 2020, which was a substantial effort considering the impact of COVID-19. Our revenue from customers decreased slightly, however this was offset by the Federal Government Job Keeper scheme, which kept our total revenue consistent with the prior year.

The entity loans will be paid down to the Member Associations (YMCA Geelong, Whittlesea and Victoria) in the coming year and distributions of surplus to the members will occur in the coming year which a fabulous result after 4 years of operations.

YMCA Geelong are heartbroken at the passing of Abraham (Abe) Knox. A young man who was a pleasure to be around and coach. Abe played U16 basketball for our club and a talented basketball referee who last year was awarded outstanding referee award at the 2019 Australian Indigenous Basketball Nationals. Our deepest sympathies to Abe’s family and friends, we are with you at this time. RIP Abe you will be missed in the Y and Basketball community.

Albert Trevor Bruhn

14/02/1925-27/09/2020

It is with sadness that YMCA community farewells one our long term friends Trevor Bruhn who passed away at the age of 95, on September 27, 2020.

Trevor provided YMCA Geelong with decades of service, he served as the Associations solicitor for many years. He was awarded a Life Membership for voluntary contribution that spanned more than 50 years and acknowledged as YMCA Hall of Fame member.

Trevor was an avid attendee at all the Y’s Annual General Meetings and loved the opportunity to meet with staff, members and the Board.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to his wife Pearl, children Owen and Elizabeth; grandfather to Mietta, Sarah and Naomi.

In keeping with Trevor’s families’ wishes, YMCA Geelong will plant a shrub that will bring birds to our gardens and when you see them, think of him.

YMCA Geelong Is so grateful for Trevor’s contribution and service to the Geelong Community.

Geoff Williams

1930 – 2020

YMCA Geelong is mourning the loss of an outstanding community member with the death of Geoff Williams on Monday 20th July.

Geoff was a member of the Geelong Cats’ 1952 premiership team, educated at Geelong High School, and started his football career at East Geelong before work placement through his employment with a bank took him to Gippsland.

He played with Warragul in the Central Gippsland league before returning to Geelong as a 21-year-old, and he was able to break into the team in the opening round of the 1952 season as the Cats started what would ultimately be a successful premiership defence. As well as playing a pivotal role in Geelong’s 46-point grand final win over Collingwood 1952.

Outside football Geoff made an enormous contribution to the community. He co-founder the YMCA Little League Football Competition and contributed to the development of junior sports for all. He established a ‘Drop-in’ centre in Bell Post Hill with his church group through the Uniting Church, and he was part of Probus. He even drove the prison welfare bus from North Geelong.

Geoff served on the YMCA Geelong Board for many years. His wife Joan (dec) worked for the YMCA in the office for many years. Our deepest sympathy to Geoff’s four children and their families
