Thinking outside the box Bread and Circuses The Ancient Roman rulers, so to maintain power and control over the Ro- man people, employed a strategy known as“bread and circuses”. The term “bread” refers to the tactic of deprivation. If a person is constantly thinking about or working toward secur- ing their financial and physiological needs, he or she will not have the mental energy or desire to challenge those who rule, thus making he or she easier to control. Under this hardship, a person is also less likely to think about ideas and actions able to im- prove their existence as a human. The term “circuses” denotes amuse- ments and entertainment. If a person’s downtime, when he or she isn’t thinking about or working toward securing their financial and physiological needs, is preoc- cupied by “circuses,” an individual is less likely to realize their exploitative existence. Equally, a person will not have an opportunity to envision a less oppressive situation. The easy pleasures made available to the Roman public were designed to distract an individual from conceptualizing higher intentions. Deprivation and distraction were tools used by Ancient Roman rulers, and if you examine the movements of the contemporary person, these tools are still in use. By way of a paycheque-to-paycheque existence, a life on credit, and the irrational- ly high cost to exist, deprivation is common. As for the distraction, unlike Roman chariot races and gladiator matches, the modern means and methods able to side- track the herd are far more advanced. Today, things such as television programs, sporting events, concerts, celebrities, and gossip magazines are employed. Ancient Roman tactics are used to misdirect the general public and many people are unaware of the restricting disposition. This is so because forces were already in play, power struggles were already staged, and a person is born in the game without knowing how it’s actually played. — Mike Bhangu, Amazon best-selling author MERRITT MORNING Please recycle Office Supplies (250)378-6882 Printing & Engraving (250)378-6808 1951 Garcia St., Merritt, BC 2037 Quilchena Avenue, Merritt BC 250-378-2155 FREE Delivery for Seniors & Those with Restricted Mobility BLACK’S PHARMACY Merritt Printing & Office Supplies is now your local agent for Parcel pick up & drop off hours are Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm, 1951A Garcia St WORLD YOUTH SKILLS DAY ED. Thinking outside the boxBread and Circuses

The Ancient Roman rulers, so to maintain power and control over the Ro-man people, employed a strategy known as“bread and circuses”.

Under this hardship, a person is also less likely to think about ideas and actions able to im-prove their existence as a human.

The term “circuses” denotes amuse-ments and entertainment. If a person’s downtime, when he or she isn’t thinking about or working toward securing their financial and physiological needs, is preoc-cupied by “circuses,” an individual is less likely to realize their exploitative existence.

By way of a paycheque-to-paycheque existence, a life on credit, and the irrational-ly high cost to exist, deprivation is common. Today, things such as television programs, sporting events, concerts, celebrities, and gossip magazines are employed.

Ancient Roman tactics are used to misdirect the general public and many people are unaware of the restricting disposition.
