Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Commanding Officer Capt. Kirk R. Hibbert signs the Domestic Violence Proclamation Oct. 7.

Shipmates and Navy Families,

On this wonderful occasion of our Navy's 235th birthday, I would

like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your outstanding dedication and commitment to our great Navy.

As you know, our Navy is the best it has ever been; we're operating on land, on, above and below the world's oceans, with the most advanced equipment and technology, but, at the end of the day, we are only as good as our people. It takes Sailors like you to ensure we continually meet the demands of our expanded Navy environment and increased mission requirements.

I would like to thank each and every one of you for your service to our nation and our Navy, and for truly making our great Navy a global force for good.

As we celebrate our anniversary, take a moment to remember those currently on watch around the world and those who have gone before us and laid the foundation to which you build upon.

I also want to say "thank you" and express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to our Navy families. Your role in your Sailor's life and the Navy is vitally important.

Happy birthday Shipmates! I am really proud of who you are and the outstanding job you do every day.

Happy 235th birthday Navy and HOOYAH!

As I think of the U.S. Navy’s 235th Birthday,

I am compelled to think of the pride of my grandmother and grandfather who served in World War II.

I think of those who have come before me

while thinking of the brave Navy men and women who I now serve with.

I consider the greatness of the ocean, the power of the wind, the fright of the storm, and the peace over still waters.

I consider the human fighting spirit, the drive of the mighty engines of the fleet and the versatility of the Osprey.

I consider the bold Marine, the watchful guardian, and the muscle of the Sailor.

And in the midst of the sandstorm and the ocean spray, I consider God’s greatness and watchful guiding hand, leading and speaking all of this life into place.

I remember the fallen and am thrilled by the living, and that God has his watchful hand on all.

It is my prayer that as our Navy sails on into the future that our Eternal Father of all creation would steer us well, protecting us and using our will to make the world a safer and better place.

MISSIONto save livesThe veterinarian and vet technicians were

providing chemotherapy to a cat suffering from cancer, an insulin drip to a diabetic

cat, medication to an older male poodle, and post-operative care to a German Shepherd/Australian Hound mix during the clinic’s weekly walk-in hours.

In addition to its mission of treating and preventing contagious animal-to-animal and animal-to-human diseases onboard the Naval Station, the vet clinic houses and cares for stray kittens in need of a home.

Currently, the vet clinic is caring for seven kittens from two litters, all less than three months old, and their two mothers. All nine felines have been cleared medically for adoption.

“When you adopt a kitten, you fill out an adoption contract,” said Army Capt. Miriam Lovell, Veterinarian and Officer-in-Charge at the clinic.

The adoption contract states that the prospective

kitten-owner cannot abandon the kitten, affirms knowledge of and willingness to pay adoption fees, and that the vet clinic will cover the charges of the first round of immunizations and spaying or neutering the kitten. The kittens who are not adopted can be euthanized after a period of time.

“Every attempt should be made to adopt out healthy kittens, which is why we house them on a space available basis,” said Army Sgt. Angela Dominguez, a Veterinary Technician.

The vet clinic encourages residents to adopt and take care of the kittens.

“I went to vet school so that I could learn to save animals’ lives, not to just euthanize them,” said Lovell. “I hate the idea of euthanizing a perfectly healthy kitten because no one will adopt it.”

For more information or to adopt a kitten, call the vet clinic at 2212.

current readiness and ability to respond to major events,” said Kevin Robarge, the installation training officer.

The base will then use ‘lessons learned’ to improve readiness, said Robarge.

Readiness is essential to preserving life and property.

“This process begins with the initial responders setting up an incident command post near the site of the emergency,” said Robarge.

Personnel also man the Emergency Operations Center, allowing incident commanders to focus on their area of responsibility while EOC personnel coordinate logistics and plan ahead.

“This type of support allows incident commanders to stay focused on their immediate tasks,” said Robarge.

Robarge added that during training evolutions and real-life emergencies, the number one priority for EOC personnel and incident commanders is life safety.

manager. “It’s a way to say thank you to service members who serve in remote overseas locations.”

The NEX has been preparing for this event for more than six months acquiring enough merchandise, vendors, and entertainment for the event, said Good.

The NEX expects to see more than 1,500 customers during the first few hours the store is open, said Good.

“With all of the monetary giveaways, the entertainment, and great prices we have in the ad, it’s going to be a great community event,” said Good.

Where will your next duty station be?By MCC(SW) Bill Mesta

Enlisted sailors seeking to take control of their future assignments now have a pow-erful online tool.

The Career Management System/Interactive Detailing (CMS/ID) allows sailors to view a variety of duty station assignments that are cur-rently available and permits users to apply for vacant billets.

Sailors are now required to use the Career Management System/Interactive Detailing (CMS/ID) to negotiate for future assignments.

One thing Sailors need to be aware of is that they can only apply for future duty stations when they are within nine months of their projected rotation date (PRD), said Chief Navy Counselor Shakilah Verner, command career counselor for Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. “At the nine month mark you should be in the CMS/ID system looking for what is available and applying for it.”

If a Sailor decides to not to use the CMS/ID system within the first three months of their ne-gotiating window, they will be given orders that are considered ‘needs of the Navy,’ Verner said.

“You will be assigned to any ‘hot fill’ billets or billets that the Navy needs filled immediately,” said Verner. “You can be assigned a set of orders that are not of your choosing.”

One of the precursors to be able to work in the CMS/ID system is to have Perform to Serve (PTS) approval. Sailors are unable to transfer without approved PTS, said Verner.

“Once you have your PTS approval you can detail for orders in the CMS/ID system,” said Verner.

Perform to Serve packages should be submitted 13 to 15 months prior to a Sailor’s project-ed rotation date or the end or their active duty obligation, whichever comes first, Verner said.

If a Sailor has questions about CMS/ID or Perform to Serve they should contact their departmental or divisional career counselor.

To learn more about CMS/ID and other Navy Career Tools, visit the Sailor Career Toolbox page on the Navy Pesonnel Command website at www.npc.navy.mil/CareerInfo/Career-Toolbox/.
