As an epicurean who loves leftovers, I get very sad when I clean out the fridge or the freezer and discover the delicious meals I have neglected to fully enjoy. I even pause for a little moment of silence—remembering the joy of that meal that produced this delicious food…and maybe some delightful conversation. (“You have utensils for a reason. We’re civilized people in this house.” Stuff like that.) There is also a little self congratulations. “Well, good thing you didn’t eat all of that anyway. Imagine what the scale would say.” You might guess that I set aside time after the holidays to do some cleaning. (Emphasis on “some”) And it can be a good spiritual discipline for this time in the season of the Epiphany (the revelation of Christ to the world). After the waiting of Advent and the fulfillment of Christmas, we approach this time that calls us to ponder. What’s next? We have turned the page on our liturgical calendar. Epiphany allows us to examine how we see and proclaim the work of Christ in the world. And this comes to us at a perfect time. We have said good-bye to our fine interim pastor Rev. Karl-John Stone. We continue our search for a Youth and Family Minister. And we begin a process of missional reflection through a process called “Faithful Innovation” convened by the Greater Milwaukee Synod. “Faithful Innovations” will guide us in discovering new op-portunities for outreach and connection with our community. We will meet with other congregational leaders from the area. And we will learn and grow from one another. The hope of this season is that we have room. We have room to reflect on our history. We have room to share our stories. We have room to try new things. We have room. Jesus told his disciples… “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2) Often…we interpret this promise to be a gift in eternal life. But might it also apply to our life here on earth? Are there not many dwelling places, where each of us, ac-cording to our gifts, can live full, productive, kind, and loving lives? I encourage you…while you are cleaning out the leftovers of the year gone by…to reflect on your place in the world. How is Jesus going ahead of you to prepare your mission and purpose? Peace,

Pastor Brad

The BoardWalk

The BoardWalk is intended to update the Congregation monthly regarding the Church Board activi-ties. In December the Board discussed the El Salvador Ministry, Youth Ministry, 2020 Continuing Education, Treasurer’s Report, 2020 Annual Meeting, Nominating Committee, Piano Agreement, and the 2020 Ministry Plan.

El Salvador Ministry: Pastor Brad recapped the recent El Salvador trip. Members of North Cape and Galilee Lutheran Church travelled to El Salvador November 9-15. While there they interacted with the youth, shared meals, painted the church, worshiped, visited landmarks, and provided much needed items to the community. Youth Ministry: Pastor Brad updated the Board on the activities of the youth ministry. In November the youth partici-pated in a “Friendsgiving” night. There will also be the annual Jamboree fundraiser for the youth mission trip on January 4th. 2020 Continuing Education: The Board motioned to approve the 2020 continuing education budget for the senior pastor of $1,500 to be used towards non degree classes at UW-Milwaukee with accompanied time off. Treasurer’s Report: In November, income and expenses were below what had been budgeted for. Year to date expens-es are currently exceeding year to date income by $11,874. 2020 Annual Meeting: The date of the annual meeting was finalized for Sunday, January 26th. Nominating Committee: The nominating committee will be recruiting members to be a part of the Church Board, the Faithful Innovations team, and the Equipping and Supporting Cluster Coordinator position. Piano Agreement: The Board motioned to extend the agreement with Laurie Auer until June 30, 2021. Currently she is using the church as a place to hold piano lessons for her students, two of which are members of North Cape. 2020 Ministry Plan: The Board reviewed and discussed the 2020 Ministry Plan. The budget committee and call commit-tee will review the proposed budget a final time before it is approved in January. Thank you for your continued support of our congregation!

CHURCH MOUSE CORNER

Hey…It’s your loveable, huggable friend Marty here. I bet you think I’m obsessed with food 100% of the time. Close. More like 90% of the time. With the other 10% of my time and brain power, I really

enjoy watching you folks do some really kind things for others. In the last few weeks, I’ve heard you making lots of noise—donating change and bills for great causes. The Penny Wars raised money for the Youth Mission Trip to Chattanoo-ga, TN. Boy, was it fun watching Pastor Brad get pied in the face by his friend Jackson. And I hear there is a big shin-dig coming January 4. Some-thing about meat and raffles. Cool. Thanks to mission trip leaders Les Gumieny, Jim Muszynski, Chris Luedtke, Sue Gordon, and Kim Mackey. You also gave loudly and proudly for the El Sal-vador Noisy Change offering during the Sunday School Program. The funds will help purchase backpacks and school supplies for kids returning to school in January. Thanks to Mark and Tami Wittenberg and Jill Peterson for making this hap-pen. And thanks for all your contributions. I love it when the church is noisy! That means great things are happening. Say cheese!

Scrip Sales in January

Winter Stock-Up Scrip Sale Thank you to all who have shopped the Scrip

Program—one time or every sale! Shopping with friends is fun!! I enjoy so much the opportunity to chat with fellow NCLC members about favorite stores, good deals, and special offers. I often take home ideas and advice for future sales. And most of all, I enjoy getting better acquainted with the members of my NCLC family. Winter Stock-up Scrip Sale will be held on January 19th and January 26th after both worship services. Orders taken on the 19th will be available for pickup on the 26th and inventory is available for sale both days. This is a good chance to stock up on the most-used grocery and gas cards as the next sale after this one will not be until March 22nd and 29th. Thanks again for supporting the Scrip fundraiser

and 'shopping with friends' on Sunday mornings!

Something looks different…. If you’ve been in the lower level kitchen recently, you probably noticed the two new refrigerators in there. The large cooler that had been there finally reached end of life and we decided to replace it with more energy efficient refrigerators that provide almost the same amount of space inside. We used pro-ceeds from our most recent Fish Boil along with a generous donation from a member to cover the cost. Thank you very much to Joe Strueder and Mike Moser who removed and disposed of the old cool-er and to Ann who worked diligently with Home Depot to get us a really good price on these units.

In addition to using considerably less energy, the lower profile allows more space for folks to maneuver around them. The seals on these new units are very tight but using your foot to brace the lower left cor-ner near the floor seems to help when opening the door. We are considering some type of pad under them to keep them from moving when opening the door and plan to keep only one fridge plugged in ex-cept when more refrigerator space is needed for large events.
