Today we continue our new five-part worship series called

“Becoming a Christian Hero” covering ideas about

faith, loyalty, compassion, joy, and this morning - courage.

Christian courage is developed through grappling with

situations that strike fear into us: choosing to do the hard

thing while knowing you could fail; standing firm when it

would be easier to sit down; reaching out to someone

knowing that relationships carry with them potential

unknowns. Opportunities to face our fears and develop our

courage abound in our lives. Be comforted in God’s love, and let your love show

through courageous action. Our five-week exploration continues today.

Coming Up This Week

Our Adult Christian Education class that meets in the Koinonia Lounge is spending this month exploring contemporary issues. Next Sunday at 8:30am, the topic will be “Achievement Gaps/Needs in Public Education.” Our own Mert Bayer (N.W.T.C. student support specialist), Steve Warner (De Pere School Psychologist), and Kathy Gutzman (elementary school teacher for more than 20 years) will discuss local issues and answer questions. The second adult class that meets in the Gathering Area will be continuing their current video-based discussion of Max Lucado’s “Unshakable Hope.”

“Our lives begin to end the day we

become silent about things that

matter.”

Have you heard that many area businesses will share 2 to 5%

of your purchase amount with our church through HuTerra

Rewards? Download the app to participate directly or just drop off

your recent receipts (no more than 45 days old) in the Family Life

Center container. They’ll be sorted and submitted for a donation.

For more details contact Ken Nyberg or Elder Tori England. Save those receipts!

Dust off your recipe books because our 9th Annual Chili Cook-off is returning Saturday, February 8 at 5:30pm. Last year, two-time winner Kevin Mackey passed the trophy to David Malcolm (with his “assistant” Lucy). We’ve had six different champs in the past eight years. Are you next? Everyone’s invited to bring a crock pot of your favorite “secret recipe.” If you’re not much of a cook, you’re still encouraged to come and enjoy judging all the entries. Mark your calendar for this fun and flavorful Saturday evening!

Elder of the Month Deacons of the Month

Our church volleyball team has begun a new season, but they’re still looking for new members. It’s a co-ed team for adults and youth (aged 14 and older). All games will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church on Ridge Road near Lambeau Field. The next game is set for Friday at 9pm against the team from Life Church. Contact Steve Warner at 405-8808 for more information.

The women’s 4th Tuesday

Readers group is reading Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the

American City by Matthew

Desmond. Join their discussion

on Tuesday, January 28.

January’s Agape Dinner got the year started off well. Now it’s time to plan for our next meal coming on Wednesday, February 5 at 5:45pm. Dinner will be followed by some special information about St. John’s Homeless Shelter. Check out the bulletin board in the F.L.C. and take a tag or two to help with supplies. You can also drop your financial support into the box in front of the board at any time. Invite your friends to join us for our free dinner and an important presentation about St. John’s.

More Stuff You Should Know…

† Youth Group Change! Families please note that our CORE & JAM youth groups will meet today after church instead of tonight due to the Packers’ playoff game. Lunch will be provided.

† If you have little ones with you in church, be sure to check out our new Worship Resources for Kids display located up front to the right in the Sanctuary. Please return what you borrow after the service.

† The Presbyterian Pantry “Item of the Month” is jars of jelly. Drop your donations in the box in the Family Life Center for delivery to the pantry.

† You can get involved! Look for sign-up sheets in the Family Life Center where you can volunteer to donate flowers for a worship service, help serve and clean up for our weekly Coffee Fellowship Time, or donate treats for a specific date. We need you.

† Did you know you can now find videos of recent sermons (including the Mr. Rogers series and the current series) on our website at firstunitedpc.org? Just click the tab marked “Sermons.”

† If you or a loved one are in the hospital, please let the church know. Hospitals have privacy restrictions and can’t alert churches like they used to. Please call the church office, our Deacons, or Pastors Luke or Meggan to be sure we know how we can help.
