Dear Limousin Breeders,

It is with both happiness and sorrow that I go about the preparation for this dispersal. As I sit at my desk and prepare this catalog, I can’t help but think of the many enjoyable times I have shared with Lynn Combest regarding this herd of extraordinary Limousin cattle. All of us associated with the business has benefitted from the commitment and excitement Lynn has for Limousin and the people that own, care for and promote them. His enthusiasm is infectious, his tenacity is enviable and his legacy will not be fully realized for perhaps years to come.Lynn Combest is a student of Limousin pedigrees and animal breeding. The selective herd and its genetic progression are constantly in his thoughts and his efforts are obviously becoming recognizable at all levels. He is a thinker and a doer, and his Limousin herd shows the care and consideration of each and every member.Lynn and his father selected the breeding stock for this herd from France back in the early 1970s. For the last 45 years, Lynn has created one of the most impressive herd of Limousin cattle ever assembled. As one appraises the offering outlined in the catalog and in person sale day, the master plan was just beginning to be fully realized.

The dispersion of this outstanding herd, which in recent years among Limousin breeders throughout Canada has come to be regarded as one of the substantial supports of the breed, and is almost universally regarded by those most interested in the advancement of the breed. The approaching dispersion of the Combest herd is perhaps one of the greatest and most important events in recent breed history in North America. For those considering the founding of a herd of Limousin cattle or the addition of new blood to established herds, this is a rare opportunity to select at auction the members of this wonderful herd. No doubt, many present-day breeders have spent several years breeding cattle without such an opportunity. It is seldom that an entire herd is offered at the very zenith of its existence to the public for distribution without reservation of selected individuals.The phenotype and genotype of this herd is virtually without rival. The EPDs, performance, milk and disposition are all phenomenal. The remaining herd has been rigorously culled and only the very best have performed up to the standards Lynn set forth early in the program.

I wish to thank Lynn and Tyra for allowing me to assist in the final chapter of this great herd. Above all, I am thankful that Lynn is leaving the Limousin breed much better in quality than the day he purchased his first one. Welcome to the Combest Limousin Dispersal, 45 years in the making. It began in 1969 when we

AI’d a few cows to the newly imported Limousin bull Prairie Pride. We liked the calves well enough

that Dad and I applied for an import permit to bring some females in from France. I had to talk Dad

into this, as it was quite a risky investment. The cost of importation was approximately $7,000 per

head when commercial cows at the time were bringing $450. We imported four females, and then

sold the first heifer calf in the 1974 Ballroom Sale in Calgary for $20,100 to Frank Cable Jr. of Pukwana,

South Dakota. Dad decided it wasn’t such a bad investment after all.

We started showing cattle in 1975 and continued for the next 30 years, exhibiting at local

fairs, FarmFair, Agribition and the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

My dad, Andrew, was taken by cancer in 1978 and left my mother, Helen, and I to carry on

the farm and cattle operation. Some of our proudest accomplishments in the show ring were

three Agribition Grand Champion Bulls and the highly regarded Supreme Champion Female at

the 1998 Calgary Stampede. This female was SCCC Daily Double, and she went on to sell for a

record-setting price of $72,500 in the 1999 Thirty Year Anniversary Sale in Calgary.

Over the years, we have sold breeding stock from British Columbia to Quebec, and many

States south of the border, as well as cattle to Japan, China, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.

I have truly enjoyed the purebred business, and meeting people from all over the world

in the last 45 years. During these years I have had the opportunity to judge many shows

throughout Canada.

I have worked hard to get this herd of cattle to where it is today, and I believe they will go

on and produce and add power to any herd be it supplying bulls for the rancher or show heifers

for the Junior members.

Tyra and I both believe in the future of the Junior Limousin program and have donated a

heifer to be sold in our sale with the funds going to the CJLA. She sells as Lot 59.

The reason for this dispersal is 45 years in the Limousin breed and my 65 years of age. My

neighbor and friend, Bill Beer, has helped out here for the last 33 years, and he also reached his

65th year so we thought it was time to slow down.

Tyra and I were married in 2014, and it is no secret we have started a very small but elite Red

Angus herd as you will see by the two bred heifers and yearling bull in the sale.

GUARANTEE…This is a dispersion sale, and all animals must sell with no further breeding guarantee,

and all females of breeding age that have been served naturally for more than sixty (60) days will be pregnancy checked. A veterinary certificate of fertility and pregnancy will be furnished to the Purchaser upon request.

ANNOUNCEMENTS…Any changes from information of any kind in this catalog will be announced from the

auction block and such announcements shall take precedence over printed material.

TERMS…Terms of sale are cash unless satisfactory credit arrangements have been established.

All settlements are to be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the sale premises.

HANDLING RISKS…Each animal will be at Purchaser’s risk as soon as sold, but loading assistance will be

provided after settlement has been made. Each animal will be fed, watered and cared for at Purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time to allow for removal to Purchaser’s farm.

RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS…In the event of default in any part of the Terms and Conditions covering this sale by

either the Buyer, or the Seller, it shall be the responsibility of the Buyer or the Seller, to instigate any action necessary to bring about a fair settlement of any claims arising from this sale and to be responsible for any and all cost involved therein. BIDDING…Each animal for sale will be sold to the highest bidder. Each bid shall constitute an offer

to purchase, and the final bid shall constitute a binding contract between the Buyer and Seller. The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids and his decision in such matters shall be final. Bids by phone, mail or wire will be accepted and handled confidentially by sale management.’

REGISTRATION CERTIFICATES…A certificate of registry will be furnished for each animal at no cost to the Buyer within

forty-five (45) days after settlement of animals purchased.

SEMEN…Semen is stored at Alta Genetics. Shipment will be made shortly after the sale, it is

important to include all shipping instructions with the sale clerks.

BULL CALF PURCHASES…Payment 50% sale day with a post dated cheque for April 1, 2016.WINTERING. A wintering program is available on bull calf purchases. Bull(s) must be

picked up by April,1 2016. All bulls must be insured. Any 2015 bull calves that are wintered will be semen tested. A wintering fee of $400 per bull (includes semen testing) is payable at the time of the sale. Veterinarian expenses, if needed, will be added to the cost.

2015 bulls taken at the time of the sale will sell with no further guarantee.

BRED FEMALES…Pregnancy length of each female is adjusted to the sale date.

In my nearly nine years having the privilege to work with Lynn, it is a mixed feeling of both joy and a little sorrow as this fine group goes up for sale! The joy is in the quality. To be in this herd, a very high standard must be met and Lynn has never allowed compromise. Lynn Combest’s grandparents arrived in Alberta in 1913, and they moved to the present farm five years later in 1918. The farm on which the Combest family chose to live was a typical mixed farm of hay, crops and cattle. The family bred purebred Herefords until the late 1940s. Lynn’s parents, Andrew and Helen, took over the existing farm in 1959 and grew the grain acreage and expanded the commercial cow-calf operation. Since the late 1960s, they followed the example of their neighbors by using Charolais genetics, and bred their commercial females to Charolais bulls. In addition, they noted the success they were having with their French imports.

Lynn graduated from high school in 1968 and started farming with his father. Lynn was active in the 4-H beef club program, and he became interested in showing cattle. In 1969, Lynn was exposed for the first time to Limousin bulls which had recently been imported from France. That introduction lead to the decision to AI a portion of their commercial cow herd to the newly imported Limousin bull, Prairie Pride. They awaited the arrival of their first halfblood commercial calves in the spring of 1970. Those initial halfblood commercial calves intrigued Lynn to apply for his

first permit to import Limousin cattle to the farm in Canada from the Limoges region of France.

One of the most difficult tasks Lynn ever had to master was coaxing his father for his full agreement and support of the importing process, as the cost was approximately $7,500 per head by the time they arrived at the Combest farm. At the time (1971), commercial females were bringing approximately $450. The first full French Limousin import arrived at the farm in Erskine in the spring of 1972. Lynn and Andrew arranged with their permit for the cattle to arrive one at a time over a four-year period. Galattee was the first to arrive in 1972. Her first calf was born in 1973. Miss Dandy CLF 1E was consigned to a Ballroom Sale at the Calgary Inn in February 1974. She was purchased by the Limousin enthusiast, Frank Cable Jr., of Pukwana, South Dakota for $20,100. As the Combest family was driving back to the farm later that evening, Lynn’s father thought

1973, Imminence arrived in 1974, and in 1975, the final import arrived, Alriveie Jolie. During that four-year period, the Combest Limousin herd increased in number and quality, by continuing to AI the commercial cows to fullblood Limousin bulls in order to increase the percentage herd and to breed towards purebred status.

In the spring of 1978, Andrew Combest passed away at the age of 57 from cancer. This left Lynn and his mother to run all aspects of the operation. Mother Helen and son Lynn proved to be a progressive and aggressive team. The cattle numbers increased as well as the land holdings. The farming operation consisted of approximately 1200 acres until 2006. In that year, Lynn rented the crop land and held a machinery farm sale and began to concentrate solely on his Limousin herd.

Lynn exhibited cattle in Western Canada and traveled to the National Western Stock Show in Denver where he showed a class-winning bull in 1985. Lynn pursued showing cattle from 1975 to 2005. Some of the highlights of his winnings are; Grand Champion Bull at the 1982 Canadian Western Agribition and the 1984 and 1992 Reserve Grand Champion Females at the Canadian Western Agribition. Lynn exhibited SCC Daily Double to the Supreme Championship of all breeds at the 1998 Calgary Stampede. SCC Daily Double was sold at the 30th Anniversary Sale for a record breaking price of $72,500.

Over the years, Lynn Combest has sold cattle to six Canadian provinces and many U.S. states. Cattle have been exported to Mexico, Japan, China, Brazil and Colombia. The Combest Limousin herd has been represented in many consignment sales as well as being a guest consignor to the Highland Stock Farm summer sales for many years.

Lynn has served on the Alberta Limousin Association Board of Directors for six years, and he is presently serving his sixth year on the National Canadian Limousin Association Board.

In 2008, Lynn’s mother, Helen, passed away. She was an integral part of the operation and owned cattle up to her death.

During the past 33 years, Bill Beer, a lifelong friend and neighbor, has worked at the farm. His input and assistance in all areas of the farm have greatly allowed the entire operation to run smoothly.

In 2011, Tyra Boutin became a part of Lynn’s life and soon took over cattle registrations and CCIA birth certificates. Tyra was also successful in getting Lynn to use the computer. Lynn and Tyra were married in August of 2014.

With 45 years in the Limousin business, both Bill and Lynn, at 65 years of age, have decided it was time to slow down.

Some of the most significant cow families in this historic Combest Limousin Farm Complete Dispersal share the patriarch Anchor B “The Shmooze” as the common sire. The influence of the great breeding sire is vividly illustrated in the pedigrees of Lots 1 through 16A. Red Combest Alysa 440B is the maternal sister of Red Combest Lucy 401B, and both females are genetically derived from the blood of Red Bar-E-L No Doubt 108Z. The son of Red Bar-E-L Gambler 87X was a breeding sensation before he met his untimely death. Before he was lost, he left behind some of the most amazing individuals in both the Limousin and Red Angus herds.

Her dam, Red Ter-Ron Alysa 91X, was selected from the Ter-Ron program that is steeped in some of the most documented performance blood in the industry. Some of the most proven trait-leading females and bulls are in the pedigree of this excellent breeding female. Females such as the dam of the great bred heifer that sells here, are the mainstream genetic force that is represented in the foundation nucleus of the Combest Red Angus herd.

Red Bar-E-L Justification 148B, the newest Combest Red Angus herd sire and service sire to the two Red Angus paternal sisters that sell, was Lynn Combest’s choice of bulls in this year’s Bar-E-L Angus bull sale. Highland Boston was selected from the 2015 Highland Bull Sale for use in the Combest herd in preparation for this dispersal. His service was used extensively on the yearling heifers, and many females are declared safe in calf. In addition, his semen was sold through exclusive semen packages to various Canadian breeders, and the U.S. Semen rights has been sold to Glendenning J Bar J Limousin of Lebanon, Missouri.

His sire, MAGS War Admiral, is one of the great breeding bulls in the industry. His progeny have been some of the most successful in the show ring and breeding pastures throughout Canada. His breeding consistency and uniformity have been appreciated by breeders who have his descendants present in their herds.

His dam is one of the great breeding females at Highland Stock Farms. The daughter of MAGS Robin Hood is from the Louana family that is well-documented throughout North America.

The young homozygous polled and homozygous black herd sire is one of the great breeding bulls available to the industry. He is a most powerful bull for the most progressive breeder’s herd.

Highland Banded Peak is the homozygous polled breeding bull who has been used in the Combest herd. He is from some of the greatest lines in the breed in Canada, and his breeding power will be fully realized next spring with his first calves.

His sire has been used extensively in the Highland Stock Farms breeding herd, and his influence is a large part of the breeding herd today.

His dam, AGM Highland Minute Maid, is the oldest female at Highland, and she has consistently raised a great calf each year. She represents some of the great cow families in the industry.
