Coaches record: Gregg Berhalter vs. NYC: first game … Jason Kreis vs. CLB: P11 W4 L7 D0 COLUMBUS CREW SC Columbus Crew SC return to action after a weekend off, putting an end to their brief two-game winless run with a 2-1 win against the Colorado Rapids on Aug. 8 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Crew SC are in a tie for third place in the Eastern Conference with 34 points from 24 matches. LAST MATCH

The Rapids took the lead three minutes before halftime. Vicente Sanchez curled in a free kick from out on the left and center back Bobby Burling headed home from the heart of the area.

But Crew SC were level seven minutes after the break. Tony Tchani found a streaking Kei Kamara down the left side of Colorado’s box and he buried a low shot past Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin.

Kamara doubled the Crew SC lead in the 64th minute, when Tchani played a ball over the top to overlapping right back Hector Jimenez, and slotted it across the box. Kamara was there to turn the ball home from close range for the eventual winner.

The home side finished the game a man down when Axel Sjoberg was sent off by referee Alan Kelly for a second yellow card in the 90th minute.

Crew SC head coach Gregg Berhalter made three changes to the team that fell 5-2 to Orlando City SC at the Citrus Bowl. Hector Jimenez and Chris Klute came in at the fullback spots for Chad Barson and Waylon Francis, and Kristinn Steindorsson started in place of Justin Meram.

COLUMBUS CREW SC (4-2-3-1): Steve Clark - Hector Jimenez (Chad Barson 66), Michael Parkhurst, Tyson Wahl, Chris Klute - Tony Tchani, Wil Trapp - Ethan Finlay, Federico Higuain (Jack McInerney 90), Kristinn Steindorsson (Justin Meram 78) - Kei Kamara.

TEAM NEWS Crew SC return to action after a week off, after snapping a two-game winless run in the win against the Rapids.

It was their second win in the last three away games, after going 0-5-4 on their travels to start the season. “We lacked 100 percent confidence in this game, and it’s tough to go on the road at that altitude and win a

game, and the guys did it. They didn’t do it through beauty the whole time, they did it through hard work and determination and that goes a long way, said Crew SC boss Gregg Berhalter.

Said Kei Kamara: “It was kind of shaky in the first half, but again, we have to figure out how to play on the road. Hopefully, this is the turning point for us. For me, I want to keep scoring goals. I'm going to keep scoring goals as long as the team keeps producing, but it's really all about that three points on the road. That's huge.”

MLS GAME INFORMATION

Kamara scored his fourth and fifth goals over the last five games. It was his league-leading fifth multiple-goal game of the season and the 10th of his MLS career. He still leads the MLS Golden Boot standings with 17 goals on the season, one ahead of Toronto FC’s Sebastian Giovinco.

“The guys know how to look for him and to his credit he knows how to be in the right spot. He’s a fantastic goalscorer, he’s done a great job this year so far and it’s always nice to get him goals away from home,” said Berhalter.

Tony Tchani set up both Kamara goals, the second two-assist game of Tchani’s career, the first coming last season.

“It feels really good because it was something that we were looking forward to, because we have been working so hard. Based on last game, we didn’t have a good performance, but I thought [vs. Colorado] all the guys stepped up,” Tchani said.

Kristinn Steindorsson made his first start since June 6, coming into a wide midfield role and playing 70 minutes before giving way to Justin Meram.

Hector Jimenez made his first start since June 11, when he forced out of the Montréal early with an injury. Jimenez played 66 minutes before coming off for a substitute; he played 32 minutes off the bench the week before at Orlando City.

Chris Klute made his second start in the last four matches, playing the full 90 minutes at left back. “I think it’s going to bring us closer together in the long run. A couple of weeks ago we kind of let down being up three goals, and we were down a goal this game and we came together instead of just going against each other, and we came back and won the game,” said Klute.

NEW YORK CITY FC New York City FC put a swift end to their two-game losing slide, defeating D.C. United 3-1 on Thursday evening at Yankee Stadium. NYCFC are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 27 points from 24 matches. LAST MATCH

United took the lead in the 36th minute. An attempted back pass landed at the feet of D.C. striker Chris Rolfe, who turned and made a long run toward goal before finding Alvaro Saborio on his right, and he tapped in from close range for the opener.

NYCFC equalized five minutes into the second half. Andrew Jacobson played a terrific ball into space for Kwadwo Poku, who rounded United goalkeeper Bill Hamid before slotting to Thomas McNamara, who knocked the ball in from inside the six-yard box.

The home side took the lead in the in the 80th minute. Andrea Pirlo lofted a ball from the midfield to David Villa, who split a pair of D.C. defenders at the edge of the box before beating Hamid with a low shot inside the left post.

Two minutes from full time, Poku put the finishing touches on the NYCFC win when he latched onto a long ball by McNamara and put his low shot in off Hamid from inside the penalty area.

NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis made three changes to the team that fell 2-0 to the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. R.J. Allen and Jason Hernandez came into the back four in place of Andoni Iraola and Jefferson Mena, and Kwadwo Poku started in midfield for Frank Lampard.

NEW YORK CITY FC (4-2-3-1): Josh Saunders - R.J. Allen (Andoni Iraola 52), Shay Facey, Jason Hernandez, Angelino - Andrew Jacobson, Andrea Pirlo - Mix Diskerud (Sebastian Velasquez 79), Kwadwo Poku (Patrick Mullins 90), Thomas McNamara - David Villa.

TEAM NEWS New York City FC snapped a two-game losing streak with the win against D.C. United, their first losses in back-

to-back games in league play since May 3-10, when they suffered the final two defeats in their season-long four-game losing run.

“I think this can be a really huge win for us and a season-changer for us and a momentum-changer for us,” NYCFC coach Jason Kreis said. “I’m hopeful of that and I hope the locker room feels the same way. … What I’m hopeful of is this starts a new season for us, that this can really push us forward.”

Said goalkeeper Josh Saunders: “It was huge. This is definitely a confidence builder for us. They’re a first place team in the league on our side. For us moving forward into a big road trip we need to build on this, build on the result and rack up points wherever we can.”

NYCFC hit for three goals, the third time in the last six matches where they’ve scored three or more goals. They have scored 14 goals over that six-game span.

“I think our team has been doing some really nice things. I think attacking-wise we've been quite good for many games now. We've let ourselves down defensively a bit, and I think that comes from having new players that have not played a lot together,” said NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis. “I think three out of the back four are new players that are brand new to the team. We have Andrea Pirlo who is brand new to the team. We have Frank Lampard now who is brand new to the team. So obviously there are going to be some tactical changes. I am hopeful that we are sticking our flag in the ground right now and will move forward positively.”

MLS GAME INFORMATION

David Villa scored his 14th goal of the season and added his sixth assist of the season, the seventh time in the last 10 games he’s been involved in multiple goals in a game for NYCFC. Villa has scored 12 goals and added four assists over the last 12 games, dating back to May 30.

Kwadwo Poku scored his second goal and added his seventh assist, his third match where he’s been involved in multiple goals in the same game. Poku has a goal and four assists over his last four league games.

“He played a fantastic game. He had done so before against Orlando and the other teams,” Andrea Pirlo said of Poku. “He is a player I did not know before. He has incredible physical strength and he is growing so well and so much. He works very hard and he will continue to do so and grow.”

Thomas McNamara scored his fifth goal of the season, his third in the last four matches. All five of McNamara’s goals and all three of his assists with NYCFC have come since June 6, over the last 10 games.

Andrea Pirlo contributed his first MLS assist, setting up the Villa goal. Pirlo was making a third consecutive start in the midfield, again playing the full 90 minutes.

“I needed to get forgiven for the bad pass that led to the first goal in the first half,” Pirlo said. “David was really good on picking up on it and it ended up really well.” Said Kreis: “For me that pass was out of this world.”

R.J. Allen returned to the starting lineup for the first time since July 4, coming in at right back and playing 52 minutes.

Kamara is 10 shots shy of breaking the club’s all-time single-season shots record (John, 116, 1998).

TCHANI ON THE VERGE OF 100Midfielder Tony Tchani’s next appearance will mark his 100th with Crew SC ... Tchani would become the 22nd player to ever hit 100 appearances with the Black & Gold ... current teammate Justin Meram (112 appearances) is the only other active member of Crew SC to hold that achievement.

TCHANI RECORDS SECOND MULTI-ASSIST GAMEFollowing an official scoring review, Tony Tchani was credited with a second-ary assist on Kei Kamara’s 64th-minute goal (the game-winner) on August 8 at Colorado ... the awarded assist gave Tchani two for the match and three for the season ... he now has 15 career helpers, with 12 coming as a member of Crew SC ... the performance was also the second time in the Cameroonian’s career that he recorded a two-assist match, following October 11, 2014 at Philadelphia, also as a member of the Black & Gold ... it was also Tchani’s first game-winning assist this season and the fifth of his MLS career.

JIMENEZ NOTCHES HELPER IN COLORADOOn August 8 at Colorado, Hector Jimenez registered the game-winning assist by setting up Kamara’s second goal ... it was the fourth assist of the season for Jimenez and his second game-winning helper, following his assist on May 9 vs. Seattle ... this is the first time Jimenez has notched more than one game-winning assist in a single season.

KLUTE WORKS WAY TO MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER FOLLOWING SPELL WITH ATLANTA SILVERBACKSAhead of becoming a member of Crew SC, defender Chris Klute plied his trade for the Colorado Rapids and the NASL’s Atlanta Silverbacks ... according to The Columbus Dispatch’s Adam Jardy, Klute joined the Silverbacks after a two-year hiatus from the game ... a quote by Klute from Jardy’s story: “I knew in the back of my head I always wanted to (keep playing), but I just didn’t know where to start. I went [to Atlanta] and it was definitely a shocker. I hadn’t played for two years. It was pretty bad, but the coach gave me a chance and let me stay and helped me get back in shape.”

KLUTE RETURNS TO COLORADO, EARNS STARTING NODOn August 8 at Colorado, defender Chris Klute started at leftback and played the full 90 minutes in his return to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, where he played his first three MLS seasons ahead of being traded to Crew SC at the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

AFFUL CREDITS BERHALTER IN DECISION TO COME TO COLUMBUSIn a recent profile of new Crew SC signee Harrison Afful by Andrew King from MLSsoccer.com, the defender was quoted as crediting Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter in deciding to come to Columbus ... a quote by Afful from King’s piece: “For me, what brought me here was the conversation with [Berhalter]. For me, as a football player, the relationship with you and coach is more important. So that’s what brought me here ... One more important thing is that big names are coming to MLS. So it makes it more enjoyable for everybody. So I’m really happy to be here. More international players are coming here from more countries, so it makes it more competitive for the whole world to come to the MLS game.”

KAMARA, FINLAY CHASING HISTORYShould Crew SC’s tandem of forward Kei Kamara and midfielder Ethan Finlay finish the season as the League’s leading goal-scorer and assist-getter, respec-tively, it would mark the first time since 2001 that the League leader in both goals and assists came from the same team ... the Miami Fusion accomplished the feat last in that 2001 season, with the Tampa Bay Mutiny the only other MLS team to accomplish it, in 2000 ... no current MLS club has ever completed a season boasting the League’s leading goal-scorer and assist-getter ... see below for a breakdown:

Season .......Club Goals Leader Goals Assists Leader Assists2001 ...........Miami Alex Pineda Chacon 19 Diego Serna 15 (tied for lead)

2000 ...........Tampa Bay Mamadou Diallo 26 Carlos Valderrama 26

Additionally, Columbus has finished an MLS campaign with either the League’s leading goal-scorer or assist-getter on four different occasions ... only twice has Crew SC had a player lead the League outright in either category ... see below for a full list:

New York City FC is the newest professional soccer team in the New York City area and the first MLS club to play within the five boroughs. The club lives and breathes New York City’s diverse culture and embraces the inclusion of all five boroughs in their team philosophy. New York City FC is supported by their majority owner, City Football Group, a global football network that includes sister clubs Manchester City FC and Melbourne City FC and a minority stake in Yokohama F. Marinos. The Club currently play their home games at Yankee Stadium. The New York Yankees are a minority owner.

New York City FC earned an impressive 3-1 victory over Eastern Conference-leading D.C. United in front of a sell-out crowd of 28,262 at Yankee Stadium, earning a vital three points as the Club vies to qualify for the Major League Soccer playoffs. The match was scoreless until the 37th minute, when D.C. United forward Chris Rolfe slid the ball across the middle to Alvaro Saborio whose side-footed effort went into the back of the net. The score re-mained unchanged heading into the second half. Club captain David Villa had the ball on the left side and played a lovely through ball to Kwadwo Poku in space on the right. Poku dribbled past Bill Hamid before feeding the ball to Tommy McNamara, who slotted it home. With the score knotted at 1-1 in the 80th minute, midfielder Andrea Pirlo played a pinpoint perfect pass from near the midfield line over the top to Villa. Villa somehow controlled the ball despite being sandwiched by D.C. United defenders then fired home the go-ahead goal inside the near post. New York City FC weren’t done, though, as Kwadwo Poku sealed all three points for the home side with a goal in the 88th minute, Poku received the ball on the right flank and drove on a backpeddling Boswell, turning him in and out and in again before blasting a shot past Hamid at the near post for what would be the final score of 3-1.

Jason Kreis at the HelmNew York City FC’s Head Coach, Jason Kreis, is already a household name across America having established himself as a world-class soccer player and coach over the last two decades. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Kreis has seen his sporting career continue to grow, beginning with a successful four year stint at Duke University. He then went on to play for several minor league clubs before joining Dallas Burn during the Inaugural MLS Draft in 1995. Kreis scored the team’s historic first goal and soon became the League’s first American-born MVP in 1999, a year in which he led the MLS’s scoreboard in both points and goals. In 2004, Kreis became Real Salt Lake’s first player when the club joined the MLS as its 12th franchise and he soon left his mark on MLS history yet again by scoring the team’s first ever goal, cementing his place as the first player in the League to score the inaugural goal for two different clubs. A year later, during the MLS’s 10th season, Kreis would continue to establish himself as a trailblazer when he became the first player in the League’s history to score 100 goals. Today, Kreis remains the fifth highest scorer in MLS history. With over 300 professional appearances and 14 caps for the US national team under his belt, it was no surprise when Real Salt Lake named Kreis their head coach for the 2007 season. Despite being the youngest active head coach in the MLS, Kreis’ professionalism on the pitch allowed him to naturally transition into his new role. Kreis’ strong leadership brought Real Salt Lake a string of successes over the next seven years, including winning the club’s first MLS Cup Championship in 2009 and, most recently, coming second to Sporting Kansas City following a dramatic penalty shoot-out. Taking into account his dynamic and inspiring MLS career, New York City FC proudly announced Kreis as the team’s new head coach for their inaugural MLS season on December 11, 2013.

Captain David VillaOn June 2, 2014, New York City FC made an early splash when they signed their first-ever player, international star David Villa. As Spain’s all-time leading goal scorer, adding Villa to the New York City FC roster and naming him captain was the perfect first move to kick-start the club’s campaign for the 2015 MLS season. Villa’s show-stopping performance on the pitch caught the eye of the entire MLS and he was named Player of the week following the club’s impressive victory over the Revolution on March 15th. Villa began the season by scoring the club’s first-ever goal in their pre-season friendly versus St. Mirren in February, but what fans got to witness first-hand in the club’s first home game was even more memorable. Not only did Villa net the team’s first goal with the finesse of a seasoned player, he also played an essential role in the club’s second goal where Patrick Mullins solidified New York City FC’s lead and eventual win. After some time off the pitch due to injury, Villa has returned to lead from the field.

At Home with the YankeesFrom day one, the New York Yankees have welcomed New York City FC to the Big Apple, sharing their iconic Yankee Stadium home for the club’s inaugural MLS season. An All-Star Coaching TeamJoining Kreis on the coaching bench are fellow sporting all-stars: Miles Joseph, CJ Brown, Robert Vartughian, Aidan Byrne and Oscar Pitillas. Joseph and Brown have earned a combined total of 18 caps for the US national team and have also already left their mark on the MLS scene with a string of outstanding stats

that include Brown’s record 25,738 minutes of game time with the Chicago Fire. Likewise, Vartughian and Byrne’s coaching experience with international youth and American university teams is unparalleled, making them vital assets within the New York City FC framework that is further bolstered by the international edge that Pitillas offers. The lone non-soccer player of the bunch, Pitillas is a former Spanish Olympic hurdler who brings over 10 years of physical training expertise with him following his time with reigning Spanish La Liga champions Atlético Madrid, where New York City FC Captain David Villa used to play.

18,000 Founding Members and CountingNew York City FC has reached yet another milestone as their number of season ticket holders has now surpassed the 18,000 seat threshold.
