The Hamptons have a lways been a spec ia l p lace for des igner G ideon Mendelson . Growing up , h is parents rented summer homes in a var iety of towns a long the far-eastern shores of Long Is land . For Mendelson and h is fami ly, the at t ract ion to the Hamptons was never the g l i t z and g lamour, but rather the natura l beauty of the landscape .

“ I t ’ s a p lace where people go to escape , to re lax , to get away f rom the hust le and bust le of Manhattan ,” Mendelson sa id . “A p lace where they go to connect wi th nature .”

And whi le the Hamptons are on ly a two-hour dr ive f rom New York C i ty, those two hours separate two complete ly d i f ferent co lor pa let tes .

“ T H E PA L E T T E S T E N D T O B E A L I T T L E

M O R E N AT U R A L . ”

“The c i ty is a man-made env i ronment ,” Mendelson sa id . “The beach is rea l and natura l . In the c i ty, I have a tendency to go outs ide the box in terms of us ing co lors that are a l i t t le g loss ier, a l i t t le

s i lk ier, w i th a l i t t le more sheen . In the Hamptons , the pa let tes tend to be a l i t t le more natura l , a l i t t le more organ ica l ly dr iven . Out there , you ’ l l see more neutra ls and b lues and greens .”

For h is own house , a f ive -bedroom sh ing le -sty le home in Sagaponack , Mendelson re l ied on those b lues and neutra ls that are so centra l to des ign ing for the Hamptons . His dec is ion to use b lue in both the l iv ing room and the den was rooted—as a l l Hamptons des igns should be—in the natura l surroundings .

“ I wanted the l iv ing room to connect to the outs ide ,” he sa id . “The set of French doors leads to the back porch .”

To ach ieve a s imi lar shade of pa le b lue , Mendelson suggested Prat t & Lambert ’s Oxford Grey PLN56. Th is co lor wi l l break down the wal ls that separate your in ter ior spaces f rom the sky above , lend ing any room a c lear and breezy atmosphere .

Accord ing to Mendelson , good des ign is a l l about choos ing the r ight co lors . And co lor, he sa id , “ is a s imple way for people to improve the i r l i ves .”

STEALINGTAKE A TOUR OF THE NEW ORLEANS SHOW HOME THAT ’S REDEF IN ING CLASS IC SOUTHERN ST YLE .

Steeped in lore and legend , Amer ica ’s South enchants us a l i t t le more each t ime we d iscover more of her many charms . I t ’ s a reg ion that evokes such mystery that i t fee ls a lmost fore ign , l i ke i t cou ld be long somewhere e lse a l together. Wi th i ts swampy, water-locked loca le , in tense subtrop ica l c l imate , and fus ing of European and Car ibbean cu l tures , New Or leans in par t icu lar is one dest inat ion that keeps on g iv ing f rom i ts wel lspr ing of des ign in f luences and insp i rat ion .

Th is foref ront of in f luences and a deep ta lent poo l of loca l des igners made New Or leans the model backdrop for the Southern Sty le Now des ign event and show home.

Stemming f rom an apprec iat ion for Southern arch i tecture and inter iors i l lust rated by the event ’s host , Trad i t iona l Home magaz ine , the New Or leans–based Showhouse is a study in qu intessent ia l Southern sty le .

The appea l of New Or leans was undeniab le . Ann Maine , ed i tor- in -ch ief of Trad i t iona l Home, echoed th is sent iment , “The whole idea of be ing here in New Or leans—the h is tory, the romance , the arch i tecture—was per fect .”

Prat t & Lambert had the pr iv i lege of par tner ing wi th Trad i t iona l Home to be the one and on ly prov ider of pa int—al l 22 sumptuous co lors—to br ing beauty to both the inter ior and exter ior of the h is tor ic s i te .

“Prat t & Lambert is a 165-year-o ld company, and , for us , w i th 1 ,000-p lus un ique co lors , i t rea l ly of fers a huge abundance of opt ions ,” Beth McDonough , the magaz ine ’s pub l isher, sa id .

G iven the h is tor ica l importance of the Southern Sty le Now Showhouse , the co l laborat ion was an idea l f i t . A team of g i f ted des igners , a l l ha i l ing f rom the South , was ca l led upon to br ing the i r un ique sty les to the gorgeous 1895 Queen Anne V ictor ian home.

The genera l d i rect ive was that the rooms were to mainta in the i r Southernness and h is tor ica l reference po ints , but be brought back to l i fe wi th a f resh and modern v is ion .

“Everybody th inks of Southern sty le as be ing k ind of ruf f les and bows and f lour ishes ,” sa id Robert Le leux , cofounder of Southern Sty le Now. “And I thought , you know, i t ’ s such a d is t ingu ished , sophist icated reg ion of the country that i t deserved a k ind of cosmopol i tan show home.”

You don’t need a ful l design overhaul to add a bit of Southern style to your space. It ’s about refining your designer’s eye and showcasing your creativity through color, textures, and patterns that have a famil iarity about them. Here are f ive distinct Southern styles and some simple ways to borrow the look.

LOW COUNTRYLook no fur ther than the coasta l s t retches of South Caro l ina and Georg ia to get a sense of low-country sty le . Born of a need to stay coo l and l i tera l ly s tay above water in low- ly ing bogs and marshes , th is par t icu lar s ty le is funct iona l and takes advantage of indoor-outdoor l iv ing spaces st ructured to create cross breezes and she l ter f rom the midday sun . Th ink cozy wraparound porches and shuttered windows . I t ’ s a reg iona l approach that ’s a lso very communi ty -minded , a nod to centur ies -o ld Southern hospi ta l i ty.

Sty le Stea l : Keep wal l co lor in the midtone range wi th ear thy, muted greens and b lues . Meta ls l ike wrought i ron and ox id ized copper prov ide a st rong contrast to the sof ter pa let te . For the exter ior, pa int your home’s porch ce i l ing ha int b lue , the co lor featured in the f ront porch of the Southern Sty le Now Showhouse . Sty l ing your porch in th is way is sa id to ward of f ev i l sp i r i ts—and , more pract ica l ly, bugs .

COASTAL CARIBBEANCar ibbean sty le is both br ight and bo ld , but the r ight s ty l ing can a lso be la id -back and re lax ing . I f there ever were an excuse to tar t up your pa let te co lors , the Car ibbean look is i t . From the hypersaturated co lors of market squares to the qu ieter European- in f luenced pa let tes reemerg ing wi th a more evo lved aesthet ic , Car ibbean sty le exp lores a persona l i ty that is p layfu l and energ iz ing or peacefu l and sophist icated .

Sty le Stea l : For textures and mater ia ls , th ink t rop ica l leaves and bo ld f lora ls . Add wicker or cane p ieces , such as an end tab le , a bar car t , or bar s too ls , in teak or dark wood tones . Rep lace f lora l ar rangements wi th an overs ized t rop ica l leaf , l i ke a b i rd of parad ise or f idd le -leaf f ig .

NEOCL ASSICALPol ished , e levated , and sophist icated , the neoc lass ica l s ty le comes out of Greek and Roman arch i tecture and fee ls formal , a lmost rega l . Co lors are more neutra l and tend to stay at the same saturat ion leve l . Darker wood tones and gent le geometr ic pat terns preva i l , and mater ia ls a l l fa l l w i th in the p lush to l ight sheen range . Everyth ing fee ls ta i lored and f in ished , has a sense of p lace and purpose .

Sty le Stea l : Try a muted monochromat ic pa let te on a l l s ix p lanes of a room ( that inc ludes the four wal ls p lus the f loor and ce i l ing ) . A wal lpapered ce i l ing in a qu iet tona l pat tern can br ing a r ichness that mimics the int r icate mold ing preva lent in th is s ty le . For a neoc lass ica l co lor pa let te , s t ick to whi tes , neutra ls , c reams, and l ight grays , incorporat ing some paste ls wi th just a h int of b lue , ye l low, and green . Th is pa let te can be v iewed in the guest-house bedroom, des igned by Jonathan Savage , of Savage In ter ior Des ign .

BOHOWith the South br imming wi th ar t is ts and music ians , i t i s no surpr ise that c i t ies l ike Nashv i l le , Ashev i l le , and New Or leans would have a st rong bohemian aesthet ic . At i ts core , boho is co l lected , t reasured , b lended , and ind iv idua l is t ic . The same is t rue of many Southern c i t ies .

Sty le Stea l : Co lor re igns as your new neutra l . Pa int wa l ls in a bo ld and dramat ic shade , such as Prat t & Lambert Pyr i te PL118 (as Wi l l iam Rank in McLure IV chose to do wi th the Southern Sty le Now Showhouse) , and layer textures and pat terns throughout your in ter ior space . Instead of t rad i t iona l ar twork , incorporate v intage f inds l ike the rar i t ies you may come across perus ing Nashv i l le ’s Hatch Show Pr int . L isa Mende ’s guest-house l iv ing room is an exce l lent example of f ine ly curated boho sty le f rom the New Or leans show home.

ART DECOJudging f rom the ar t fu l deco scu lptures a l l over i ts Goth ic urban cemeter ies and publ ic parks , l i ke Lafayet te Square , New Or leans fu l ly embraced the deco aesthet ic . High ly ornate and angular, w i th a preference for meta ls and g lossy meta l l ic sur faces , i t ’ s a d is t inct s ty le that appea led to a c i ty estab l ish ing i tse l f in enter ta inment and on an internat iona l sca le .

Sty le Stea l : The opulence of past and present New Or leans converges wi th the ar t deco sty le . For des ign insp i rat ion in the Southern Sty le Now Showhouse , look no fur ther than Reagan Hayes ’ par lor p iano room, wi th i ts meta l l ics , geometr ic shapes , and ext ravagant ant ique accent p ieces . High-g loss wal ls and t r im make a dramat ic statement that is e levated and unapologet ica l ly indu lgent . Try Prat t & Lambert RedSea l ® to ach ieve a h igh g loss that has an enamel f in ish , p lus a last ing , hard coat ing .

However you choose to embrace Southern sty le , remember that i t ’ s a l l about ce lebrat ing the day, cher ish ing the people in your l i fe , and making memor ies .

Page 7: COLOR CONVERSATION 2017 - Pratt and Lambert · towns along the far-eastern shores of Long Island. For Mendelson and his family, the attraction to the Hamptons was never the glitz

We at Pratt & Lambert have predicted deep, evocative colors for the year ahead. This is a departure from the last several years’ colors, which have been l ighter and cleaner. This is very much a reaction to our visceral need to escape the hectic pace of everyday l i fe into an experience that is st i l l and thoughtful , viewing the home as a retreat , as a place where we gather not only loved ones but also the colors we love most from the natural world.

This shift , felt both cultural ly and industrywide, has no doubt already begun to shape the future of interior design as we begin to move toward creating those spaces that are more personal , thoughtful , and true.

We love the look of Miranda paired with green-veined marble and copper metal accents. Or marry it with a vibrant yel low green, such as Spring Branch PL180, to create a dynamic and unexpected range of hues. For an elegant respite, try a palette that includes Andiron 412F and Oxblood PL038 and accessorize with velvets and metal l ic f ibers and furniture that is contoured and streamlined.

IMPACT ON EXTERIORS: Green makes a t imeless statement, especial ly when paired with handsome stone and cool copper.

C O L O R O F T H E Y E A RExplore the nuances of the al luring and enigmatic 2017 Color of the Year: Miranda PL275.

Deep in the woods, in a place f i l led with r ich, captivating beauty both al lusive and grounding, we f ind our Color of the Year: Miranda. Seemingly plucked from a forgotten fairy tale just before dusk, this deep hue from Pratt & Lambert® Paints communicates a longing for the wild that immediately captured our imaginations—and our endless desire for a new design muse.

From its deeply verdant tones to its grounding organic nature and unmistakable depth that sparks the idea of potential and possibi l i ty, i t ’s ushering in a new design outlook for 2017.

CAPTIVATETo attract . To enchant. To inf luence. Al l with irresistible appeal . This is what it means to captivate, and this is the power of the 2017 Color Trends. Each of these palettes tel ls an unforgettable story about what we’ve been watching and where we are going next .

Join us as we journey through the 2017 Pratt & Lambert Color Trends, through Enigma, Purpose, Convergence, and Intr insic. Along the way, you just may discover that their path is your path. Their story is our story. We begin with our Color of the Year: Miranda PL275.

MIRANDA PL275

10

Page 8: COLOR CONVERSATION 2017 - Pratt and Lambert · towns along the far-eastern shores of Long Island. For Mendelson and his family, the attraction to the Hamptons was never the glitz

IMPACT ON INTERIORSInteriors are both luxurious and mysterious, pair ing glamour and sophistication that ref lects a sense of introspection and a thoughtful mood. Try one hue, or a few from the palette, to create an impactful space.

IMPACT ON EXTERIORSColors are darker, r icher, and unexpected. Here the home exterior blends seamlessly into its natural sett ing, especial ly in environments of quiet solace. Try using one accent color on shutters and doors or for a bold statement on siding.

KEY ELEMENTS• Titanium, pewter, bronze. copper, and aluminum• Velvet• Metallic yarn• Carbon fiber• Precious and semiprecious minerals• High-shine polish • Brushed• Burnished• Metallic color• Smooth and opaque sheen• Deconstructed florals • Dark backgrounds• Angular geometries• Light-reflecting facets

ENIGMA

Enigma doesn’t just acknowledge darkness—it embraces it , explores its contours, plumbs its depths. Melancholy isn’t necessari ly a negative emotion—we al l intuit ively understand that there is something mournful ly beautiful about a long walk through a dark forest . Enigma encourages us to appreciate the dark and hidden parts of ourselves, to real ize that without darkness, there would be no l ight . Without melancholy, there would be no creativity.

This color trend also reminds us that we most often experience romance after the sun goes down. Romance is al l about sett ing a mood, and Enigma is inspired by the colors, materials , and objects that help create the mood. A glass of deep-red wine. A faded mohair blanket . The burnished oranges and reds of a copper lantern’s f lame. The combination of darkness and romance produces a dreamlike state, where forms and textures enter the realm of fantasy. Velvet twists into sculptural forms. Del icate prints appear under opaque sheens. A crystal bowl suddenly disintegrates into a pi le of precious stones.

Enigma casts a spel l , and its magic lends mystery and romance to al l i t touches.

IMPACT ON INTERIORSAs space becomes a premium, the need for f lexible, adaptable interiors is paramount. We look for simple, beautiful , mult ifunctional design. Colors are l ight , soft , and grounded by amplif ied neutrals , l ike off-black and dusky blue.

IMPACT ON EXTERIORSExteriors reflect weightlessness, and color is soft and tonal . Looking into the future, modular units can be added and subtracted.

KEY ELEMENTS• Wood and plywood• Steel, aluminum, iron, bronze, and oxidized copper• Post-industrial waste• Wool• Cork• Glazed terra cotta and clay• Oxidized and rusted• Porous and matte• Unvarnished and untreated plywood• Stamped and embossed• Powder coating• Tonal and soft pastel blocking• Asymmetric compositions• Industrial references

PURPOSE

A better, more sustainable future requires al l of us to l ive—and design—with purpose. Green and eco-fr iendly products are no longer just passing fads or marketing gimmicks—they are expressions of l i festyles centered on wellness and responsibi l i ty. The color trend Purpose takes inspiration from the yoga devotees who carry their practice into their everyday l ives, to the contractor who bui lds thoughtful houses with small carbon footprints, to the designer who creates furniture from recycled fabrics and wood.

Purpose also poses this question: What do your values look l ike? Do they resemble the rough simplicity of unfinished oak? Do they bring to mind the calm neutrals of a meditation space? Do they mirror the hazy blues of an early-morning walk around a sti l l and peaceful lake? These aren’t simply questions about aesthetics—they are questions about what kinds of spaces reflect your most deeply held bel iefs and your core aspirations for the future.

At the heart of Purpose are the physical manifestations of this new, more contemplative l i festyle. The surprising textures of art isanal texti les. The glow of healthy bare skin. The matte glaze of handmade ceramics. These colors and objects don't simply reflect a trend—they are an entirely new way of seeing the world.

IMPACT ON INTERIORSInteriors reflect the interplay of humanity and technology and the convergence of materials and f inishes. Here, we see interiors reflect a retro vibe as the home becomes seamlessly smart .

IMPACT ON EXTERIORSMetals and woods become important exterior elements with a marked departure from tradit ional materials . Color is unexpected, especial ly in the three red tones of this col lection.

We l ive in a connected age. Local news is communicated across the globe in an instant . Online communities provide the comforts of home to those who once felt isolated. This newfound connectivity is the driving force behind Convergence.

Technology also connects us to the spaces we inhabit . Our homes and off ices are now more intuit ive, more streamlined, more sensit ive to our needs. In many ways, our physical

bodies have converged with our physical spaces. And instead of a cold and robotic future, these spaces favor smooth and refined forms that are paired with intimate and luxurious materials . Decorative screens f i l led with gels that transform into rainbows when they interact with natural l ight . Woven-glass f ixtures with brass accents that throw fruit tones across rooms. Cotton laced with metal l ic al loys to create touch-sensit ive texti les.

Convergence shows us that style in the digital age has a high-capacity memory. The retro colors of the 1970s are highl ighted in new asymmetrical angles. Leather and suede are married with high-shine f inishes to showcase tradit ional craftsmanship. These combinations form a palette that shows us where we’re going without forgetting how we got here.

IMPACT ON INTERIORSAs the movement to f ind wellness, respite, and slow l iving f inds its way into our everyday l ives, interiors are warm and tacti le , and color is bold and inspired by nature.

INTRINSIC

The further we l ive from nature, the louder it cries for our return. This cry is what inspires Intr insic. We respond by surrounding ourselves with materials and textures from the wilderness. Kitchen containers crafted from birch bark. Bathtubs crafted from Jesmonite, a man-made composite that resembles granite stone. Rugs and mats fashioned from wood shavings.

The slow-food movement has birthed the idea of slow l iving. Texti les are colored with dyes from local fruits and

vegetables. Denim is woven from local cotton. Slow l iving also means slow travel ing. We journey to nearby and far-f lung locales, not to sightsee but to wander. We return and color our spaces with what we’ve brought back—tree bark, fruit r inds, local wools.

Intr insic also highl ights the way science can help infuse objects with what we’ve seen in the wilderness. Heat-sensit ive glazes transform ceramics into glowing sunsets. Technological methods preserve the deep shades of algae in yarn.

The colors of Intr insic wil l be l ived by the next generation of inf luencers as their interest in science spikes. They wil l grow up in a world where technology is merged with nature, a world where wilderness is not a place to be visited but a combination of colors and materials that wil l pervade their l ives.

One health topic proving to be a big concern is sleep deprivation. With 71 percent of Americans catching their z ’s with their cel lphones and tablets nearby, it ’s no wonder sleep loss is teetering on epidemic proportions. In her book The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night at a Time, Arianna Huff ington cal ls sleep deprivation the new cigarette smoking. She claims, “Not gett ing enough sleep at night can be just as detrimental to your health as smoking.” From performance sleepwear to long l ists of biohacks, gett ing a better night ’s rest is on the minds of a lot of Americans.

For rooms that are truly restful and rejuvenating, cooler room temperatures and special ly chosen color can create an environment of rest , according to Noble.

“Even textures and soft layers in upholstery or bedding can promote respite,” she said. “Deeper hues, l ike a r ich gray purple, are known to enhance heal ing and spir itual ity. For example, try Pratt & Lambert ’s Bresson Grey PLCN23, named perfectly for the mood it evokes. Speaking of color, i t ’s important to remember to turn off blue l ight . The blue l ight used to l ight our cel lphones and tablets has a negative impact

In a groundbreaking project at the MGM Grand Resort in Las Vegas, guest suites were equipped with an array of wellness features—air-purif ication systems, dawn-simulating alarm clocks, even a vitamin C–infused shower—all chosen to enhance physical and emotional well -being.

Valuable efforts l ike the Stay Well Program at the MGM Grand have contributed to more widespread wellness practices. Industry leaders accurately predicted that it was just a matter of t ime before the residential sector would demand the same wellness practices being used in the workplace for their homes.

Paint color and formulations are also shown to have a measurable impact on happiness and well -being. Paint coatings, especial ly, have developed from the old oi l -based standard to latex and water-based formulas. Reducing VOCs is now common practice, and color selection has advanced from being a purely aesthetic preference to one that is also a component of wellness.

These considerations are becoming the standard in hospitals and other healthcare faci l i t ies, and are, in turn, being adopted by homeowners, who also have an interest in removing toxins from their environments.

When it comes to what’s new in wellness and in color, just what, and who, are the experts at Pratt & Lambert watching right now? We cal led upon our very own resident adviser, Carolyn Ames Noble, to give us the scoop. As fel low designers ourselves, we can attest that the takeaways from that conversation were intr iguing and inspir ing.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SURROUNDINGS

One star in the fast-growing sustainabi l i ty movement is carving out a modern-day utopia of his own. Paul Scial la and his International WELL Building Institute introduced the WELL Building Standard, a worldwide system to improve health and well -being through clever bui lding design.

Sick-bui lding syndrome is just what its name implies. Environmental toxins, and factors l ike poor air qual ity, l ighting, and acoustics, can bring about a sick bui lding and, in turn, sick occupants.

IN THE K ITCHEN The American Institute of Stress claims that 44 percent of stressed people do not get a ful l night ’s sleep every night and 40 percent overeat or choose unhealthy foods. In addit ion to such problems, condit ions related to stress are also becoming more common. Think heart disease, diabetes, anxiety, and even depression.

Just in the nick of t ime, there’s a tr i l l ion-dol lar industry to save us. You probably know about the clean-eating movement, which is gaining mainstream momentum. The movement promotes food being responsibly sourced, prepared, and consumed, which paves the way for greater control of both its healthful properties and its impact on the environment.

“A healthy kitchen derives inspiration from the healthful food we put in our bodies,” said Noble. “The crisp greens of basi l , thyme, and lemongrass not only make for aromatic cuttings on your counter but also invite an invigorating canvas as a paint color. Green is calming

and heal ing. It reminds us to sit and take our t ime when enjoying a meal . Fresh citrus colors, l ike orange and lemon, along with spices of curry, cayenne, and clove, are known to stimulate metabolism, while the brightness or boldness of their colors makes for appealing enhancements in textural surfaces l ike area rugs and hand towels.”

Promote wellness in the kitchen with these colors: Vineyard 321D, Hellebore 320E, Fall River PL099, Lantern Gold 129C, and Studio Tan 326B.

IN THE HOME OFF ICE

It ’s common for an American to spend seven hours a day staring at a handheld device or computer screen. Too much of this activity can cause a condit ion cal led digital eyestrain, which, the American Optometric Association cautioned, can lead to blurred vision and other physical problems, l ike headaches and neck and shoulder pain.

“ B R I G H T, S AT U R AT E D H U E S C A N A L S O D I S T R AC T

YO U F R O M YO U R WO R K . A B E T T E R O P T I O N T O T RY

I S A C O O L B L U E . ”

We asked Noble what colors are best suited to reduce eyestrain and promote focus in a commercial workspace or home off ice. “ It ’s wise to stay away from bright whites, especial ly i f you’ l l be engaging in lots of computer or mobile-platform work,” she said. “Bright , saturated hues can also distract you from your work. A better option to try is a cool blue, which is known to reduce eyestrain while also increasing creativity—a win-win. Neutrals l ike grays and taupes that are so on trend right now are also great for reducing eyestrain. Lighter colors also help reduce VOCs, so those are excel lent choices for an environment where you wil l be spending eight or nine hours a day.“

Noble: Directional ly, neutrals are definitely gett ing warmer. We’ve seen the cool-gray trend reach its crest , and a shift toward warm grays, whites, and taupes is now occurring.

This softening is seen in trending color palettes, such as our Purpose col lection for 2017, where colors reflect larger shifts , l ike sustainabi l i ty, farm-to-fashion, upcycl ing, and thoughtful production. In that vein, I think of t imeless classics, such as Beachwood PLN27 and Sweetwood 432D, that , while always in style, have a prominent place in this current warming trend.

Q: We love this idea of statement neutrals! How do you define a statement neutral?

Noble: I bel ieve many of us would categorize neutral colors as white, beige, and tan, but neutrals can be much more color-forward than that . The shift to expansive gray in the past few years has taught us that a dramatic, deep, cool gray can absolutely serve as a neutral color in a space, as can a chalky blue, misty green, soulful violet , and so many more.

Forever enduring and continual ly celebrated for their t imeless appeal and endless versati l i ty, neutrals are capable of making a stunning statement. And what we’re seeing now couldn’t be more excit ing. Just what’s ahead? Lots of new nuances to t imeless hues, plus a fresh wave of brand-new arrivals unl ike anything we’ve ever forecast before. These shades are so captivating that we created a new category: statement neutrals . Pratt & Lambert ’s own Carolyn Ames Noble gave us the inside scoop.

“ D I R E C T I O N A L LY, N E U T R A L S A R E D E F I N I T E LY

Q: Tell us what you’re seeing right now in the world of neutrals. What classic colors are trending and what new nuances are you seeing?

Shown here : Co lor Name XXBelow: Co lor Name XXAt lef t : Co lor Name XX

Q: What makes a statement neutral a statement neutral?

Noble: The saturation level is essential to selecting a statement neutral . Saturation refers to the colorfulness of a hue—gray to color. A statement neutral should be a color with a low saturation level . Just as crucial is the value of the color. Think of darker colors in the fan deck as opposed to l ighter ones. I would also suggest using a f lat enamel or velvet sheen.

Q: What are some of your favorite statement neutrals?

Noble: A few of my new go-to statement neutrals that I recommend trying are Moss Agate PLCN10, Sodalite PLCN17, Golden Age Gilt PL159, Rusted Nail 333G, Ironside PLN69, and Faded Orchid 303E.

Q: What’s the best way to use these new statement neutrals? Are there any rules one needs to keep in mind?

Noble: For a bold space, layer complementary colors and f inishes, and for a t imeless look, use the tradit ional neutral colors of l inen and whitewashed wood.

Q: What kind of f inishes, art, and accessories work well with statement neutrals?

Noble: Any and al l ! Think of an art gal lery. For example, the Cleveland Museum of Art uses grayed and midnight blues so that the artwork is truly the feature. The key is to think of this color as the canvas, as an al lover wall color that you can bui ld your room around, with layers that let the furnishings and accessories become the accents.
