"I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might

be complete” (John 15: 11).

In last Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus told us that He is the Vine and we are His branches. The Lord’s Words were very strong: If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned (Jn 15: 5-6). Like good branches on a strong tree, we must bear fruit, fruit that endures. Our words and deeds must bring glory to God and peace and love to His People. Like branches on a tree, we must stretch ourselves, reaching out to others with the Good News of Jesus’ love and mercy. This is the fruit that endures, the fruit that will take us to heaven. Without love for others, Jesus is telling us that our connection to Him will wither and die. Many of us have known people without love for themselves and others. They find little joy in this life and have a negative outlook with which they view the world around them. We will not have the “joy to the full,” that He came to bring us. People with love see the possibilities of a world of joy and peace, a world where God is in charge. Knowing God’s loving care for them, people with love have a ‘peace beyond understanding.’ No matter what sorrows they them-selves experience, people who love God wholeheartedly, continue to trust and to hope in His love. They are then able to freely share His love with those around them. But those who cannot trust in God’s love for them, these are people who cannot see His Hand in their world. They cannot give nor receive love. Their faith, their hope, their love, withers on the vine. Our love of others is first founded on Jesus’ love for us. Our faith in the goodness of others is based on our faith in God’s love for us. Jesus expands on His image of the Vine and the Branches in today’s Gospel: If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in His love. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. Once we are God’s friends, once we have personally experienced His love, through prayer, worship and sacrifice, we find joy in sharing His Good News with others. Like the house built on the rock of His Love, we are not shaken by the storms of life. We know God loves us and we are at peace. Despite our personal stresses and sorrows, we continue to bring comfort and peace to those who mourn. We continue to show mercy to those who disappoint us. If we are God’s friends, we put the will of God and the needs of others before our own wants and needs. Because we believe in God’s unfailing love for us, we strive to bring peace and joy into our world. Loving others is not a choice for those who profess to love God. Our faith in God must be built on our belief that God first loved us and so we must love one another. The Law of Love is God’s Law, and laws must not be broken., It is clear that Saint John has Jesus’

words in the parable of the Vine and Branches in his mind when he wrote his first letter to the Church: Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God… God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear… We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot[a]

love God whom he has not

seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother (1 John 4: 15-21). If we truly believe that God loves us and has chosen us to be His friend, His co-worker in the Vineyard of this world, then we need not fear His judgement. We know that we will one day meet Him face-to-face. And when He sees us, He will smile and say: Well done good and faithful servant. Come and enter into my rest (Matthew 25:21). On that day, we will have no need of faith, it will be realized. On that day, our hope will have been justified. On that day, all that will remain for all eternity is love. Jesus reminds us today that: It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain…This I command you: love one another." God Himself loved us so much that He sent His only Son into the world to show us, not only how much He loved us, but to show us how to find peace and joy in the life so that we can bring this peace and joy to all who are without love in this world. Trust in His love for you, because you have been chosen to bring His love to those who do not know how to love Him by loving others.

Special Thankyou! Last week’s collaborative Ministry Fair was so successful because of the great efforts and energy of our parish leaders who so generously shared the knowledge and experience of their ministry with all who visited the exposition of our various parish ministries. We are especially grateful for the leadership of Dolores Tranquillino and Kevin Ritchie who donated the printing of our collaborative Directory. We hope that all parishioners will take time to read our Directory and prayerfully reflect on where the Lord is calling them to serve Him in our collaborative parishes.

WE SHARE ONLINE GIVING UPDATE

We are happy to announce that effective April 16th, all donors giv-ing to Sacred Heart Parish or St. Thomas More Parish through our applicable WeShare link will now be protected by the automated security validation process known as reCaptcha. This is an added layer of security that offers our donors more safety and security by distinguishing between humans and automated computer programs to prevent fraud. This process will be familiar to you, as you have most likely experienced this security measure on other online mer-chant websites. Now when you set up a first-time recurring pay-ment, make a one-time donation, or pay for an event, you will be asked to validate the transaction before it is processed. You will first be asked to confirm that you are NOT a Robot, and then you will be asked to choose certain pictures in response to a question.
