57th Annual Convention Friday, March 19, 2021

Virtual Event

Collaborative LeadershipBuilding Frontline Resilience

Collaborative Leadership—Building Frontline Resilience, provides the touchpoint of our 57th Annual Convention, to be held virtually on Friday, March 19. As employers, school boards have an acute awareness of the stress and anxiety their frontline education staff are experiencing during this pandemic. Boards need to ensure no one is left behind during and long after the situation normalizes. This responsibility is demonstrated by communicating about, connecting with, and caring for the mental health of all employees.

Recognition & Awards

Although the presentations may look different, once again, we will be honouring the outstanding people and programs that make public education in Manitoba great.

Our Student Citizenship, the AMM George Harbottle, and Presidents’ Council Awards recipients will be recognized in a presentation (via Zoom) at 12 noon. The presentation will also include recognition of long serving trustees and retiring executive.

The presentation will also be available to view on our website after the convention.

Elections

The final call for nominations will take place at the call to order on the morning of Friday, March 19. The positions are: president, vice-president (fewer than 6000 students), and regional directors in regions 2, 4 and 5 (one position). Candidate profiles for the nominations received to date can be viewed here.

Keynote Presentation—Sylvia MarusykCollaborative Leadership—Building Frontline Resilience

Setting the stage for our programming for the day will be a keynote presentation by Sylvia Marusyk (founder of MindBody Works). Her opening address, Collaborative Leadership—Building Frontline Resilience, will provide delegates with the tools necessary to help maintain healthy work places.

Guest Speaker—Hannah Turner Hannah hails from the Misipawistik Cree Nation (also known as Grand Rapids). She was raised in northern Manitoba practicing Cree ceremonies and moved to Winnipeg at the age of nine. Hannah is currently a grade 12 honors student at Fort Richmond Collegiate, a basketball player, on the Indigenous Youth Leader Council, and an aspiring Indigenous rights lawyer.

Bill 45 Plenary Session With the first reading of Bill 45, The Public Schools Amendment and Manitoba Teachers’ Society Amendment Act, MSBA has developed an overview of a recommended process should the bill be proclaimed as outlined. With this in mind, we look forward to this plenary session to discuss the bill and to seek input from the membership regarding the recommendations by MSBA.
