This certificate will “[p]romote excellence in learning experiences and outcomes, fostering intellectual, professional, and personal development to prepare learners for life and careers in a dynamic, global society.” (Purdue Strategic Plan, p. 6). Benefits Students who chose to complete the entire three credit series will earn the CL certificate. Students who enroll in any or all of the CL courses will receive the following benefits:

• Enhanced interpersonal skills including active, listening, managing difficult conversations, and facilitating interactions among diverse others.

• Increased self-awareness in areas such as controlling personal reactions and leadership preferences and strengths.

• Enhanced employment marketability as employers are seeking employees with advanced people skills and the ability to lead and empower diverse others. Evidence suggests growing understanding of leadership as “people” vs. “task” oriented process.

Course Sequence and DescriptionsCourse 1: Collaborative Leadership: ListeningThis experiential, case-based course focuses on integrated study of theories of human motivation and systems, working through how to have difficult conversations with colleagues, supervisors, and employees. Key feature of the course is ongoing recorded role-played scenarios, critiqued practice focusing on how to best communicate with others in a variety of situations, settings, and roles.

Course 2: Collaborative Leadership: Cross-Cultural Settings In this course, students will explore the cultural nuances of leadership in the United States as well as around the world. This course will include impact of globalism as a context for leadership, conflict resolution in a global environment, and other important factors that impact culturally diverse or global teams. Method of course delivery will include utilization of experiential activities and innovative technology to learn about and engage with culturally diverse individuals.

Course 3: Collaborative Leadership: MentoringIn this service-learning course, students will learn theories of mentoring, including both the one-on-one, “grooming” approach and the networking approach to mentoring. Students will have the opportunity to critically evaluate their personal experiences with formal and informal mentors, identify areas where they wish to receive mentoring, and serve as part of a network mentoring team to at risk K-12 students in the Lafayette area.

Pre-requisites and Requirements for Admission to CL Courses

This certificate is open to students who have completed 60 credit hours or more. Course 1, Collaborative Leadership: Listening, is a pre-requisite for admission to the other two courses. Students do not have to be formally enrolled in the certificate program in order to take courses, but completion of all three courses is required in order to receive the Certificate in Collaborative Leadership.
