Last month was certainly eventful as we gathered to raise funds for the AmericanCancer Society’s Relay for Life, to Dine on the Vine and to tour the recently reno-vated Police Department during their Open House. We also celebrated the grandopenings of several new Westland businesses including Tropical Smoothie, Zifit,Alpha Screening & Drug Testing, and Good Deeds Upscale Thrift Shop. Joiningthem is a new Firehouse Subs, 5 Below and Menchies Frozen Yogurt; and certainly,I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the reinvestment Bed, Bath & Beyondhas made in their relocation to Westridge Shopping Center. It is gratifying to seeso many choose Westland as the community in which to invest and hopefully, suc-ceed professionally and economically. I wish all of these businesses the best of luckin their endeavors.
Westland is home to countless talented and qualified individuals who may beseeking new employment. If your business is looking to tap into this talent pool, please consider sharing your job openings on our Westland Works page on the city’swebsite. Simply contact my office with the description of the position and we willbe sure to post it.
Westland's premier annual event, Blues, Brews and BBQ is quickly approachingand will take place on August 5th and 6th. As in years past, thousands will betreated to some of the Detroit Blues Society’s most popular acts, amazing barbequeand a wide variety of Michigan’s most popular micro-brews.
This year marks a special milestone as Westland celebrates 50 years as a city. Incommemoration of this momentous event, this year’s Blues, Brews and Barbequewill be bigger and better than ever before with Westland’s own American Idol andcountry music star Josh Gracin headlining the event and a historic firework cele-bration on Saturday evening. Proceeds from this event are donated back to areanon-profits and community groups who volunteer to help plan, organize and operatethe event. To date, over $150,000 has been donated to these local organizations. As you determine what your annual community outreach activities and sponsorshipswill be, we humbly ask that you consider becoming a part of this fun and charitableevent. As a sponsor, your business will be promoted in a comprehensive marketingstrategy that will be featured on radio, TV and creative print advertisements andsignage before and during the event. If you are interested in sponsoring this event, contact the Westland Chamber of Commerce at (734)326-7222.
I encourage voters to make their voices heard by voting in the August PrimaryElection to be held on Tuesday, August 2. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. – 8:00p.m. although voters may also choose to vote by absentee ballot. We are privilegedto live in a country that permits us to select our government leaders; please don’ttake that privilege for granted.
Reinvestment in the city’s infrastructure continues with work wrapping up onNewburgh Rd. and soon we will begin the total replacement of Central City Park-way. Also, Wayne County will soon begin resurfacing Cherry Hill from Wayne Rdto Merriman. While we are aware of the inconvenience road repairs can make inadding to your drive time, I hope you’ll agree that these repairs are necessary andthis short-term pain during Michigan’s always limited construction season will leadto long-term gain throughout the coming years.
And as always, remember to watch WLND, visit the City’s website www.city-ofwestland.com, and the City’s Facebook site for the latest on news, services andevents happening in our All American City!
In closing, my family and I wish you and yours a wonderful Independence Dayholiday. Enjoy this all too short warm weather!Best regards,
