Your Churchwarden writes :

Several months ago, before Christmas, I volunteered to write the Ministry Team Parish Magazine article for the May edition. It was going to be my opportunity to express how much being a Churchwarden had meant to me over the last three years and to thank the many people who had shown great support. I was to hand the role over to the new Churchwarden at the end of April but, as so often happens, life has a tendency to cause a wobble. This time it was more like a seismic heave. There were to be no meetings, so that meant no APCM, which is when a new Churchwarden would have been elected, and so I stay on until we can meet to welcome a new one.

I am writing this at the beginning of April and at the moment our whole country is in lockdown because of the Coronavirus outbreak. All churches, schools, many shops, places of entertainment and sporting venues are closed. We are self-isolating or social distancing and everyone is adapting their lives to keep to the rules. Most people are co-operating and key workers are striving to help those who need assistance, especially the NHS workers, who are putting themselves on the front line every day. We can be so grateful, too, that many other people are also doing what they can to help. Good shows itself in times of adversity.

Acts of encouragement and fortitude can be seen. There are rainbows in windows, promising a hopeful future, the NHS and key workers are clapped on Thursday evenings as a demonstration of appreciation for what they do and we can follow church services online which goes some way to ease the feeling of isolation for those who are regular church attenders. The internet has become a lifeline for many.

Perhaps, if we are fortunate, by the time this is published the restrictions will have eased and I hope, when that time comes to lift them completely, we will have found a renewed joy in each other’s company and the kindness and consideration, which this community is blessed with now, will continue.

I would like to share a prayer from another Parish magazine. Keep us, good Lord, in the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty and distress.

Sustain and support the anxious and fearful, and lift up all who are brought low; that we may rejoice in your comfort knowing that nothing can separate us from your love.

Keep safe, and my love and prayers go out to you all.

Sue RichardsonChurchwarden (for now)

Annual Parochial Church Meeting The APCM of St. Nicholas Church, Codsall & St. Peter’s, Codsall Wood was due to take place in April. This will now take place later in the year.

LADIES CIRCLE As you are all fully aware we are unable to meet at the present time and currently have no idea when our meetings will resume.

Our May meeting to Tong Church has been cancelled as well as the Chocolatier for June, although she has been rebooked for next year!

It would be good to think that maybe we could all meet up for our ‘Wine and Cheese’ AGM in July but again we have no way of knowing if this will be possible.

My main reason for writing this is to say, “Stay Safe” and know that each one of you is held in our prayers at St Nicholas Church.

Looking forward to seeing you all as soon as is possible.

Love and prayers Sue Cartwright

The content of this magazine will look different from usual but I hope you find something of interest. Should anyone want to send me an article to be considered for publication I should be very pleased to hear from you. Editor

Amanda Khozi Mukwashi, the CEO of Christian Aid, has written to all of those involved in helping with Christian Aid Week this month:

“Many of you will have been planning house-to-house collections and events. Under the current circumstances, sadly, house-to-house collections and delivery-only collections should not go ahead. In particular, along with many churches, events such as Big Brekkies or Lent lunches, where food is shared, cannot go ahead.

“We are working on alternative plans that will allow people to take part in Christian Aid Week in different, creative ways – by post, by text and online that strengthen our communities during this challenging time. Christian Aid Week is our single-most important fundraiser, so we would welcome your ideas on how we can creatively show love for our neighbours at home and abroad, as a community.”

As for the work of Christian Aid around the world, “Christian Aid and our partners already have experience of limiting the spread of infection during the Ebola crisis, and we will build on this experience. People in poorer countries are already living with reduced health resilience because of extreme poverty, or in overcrowded humanitarian camps. They also do not have good healthcare infrastructures. We will be working on the ground to help prepare communities to limit the impact of Covid-19.

gained a sense of being in community with the church and connectedness with God. The advertisement says that ‘the future is bright’. Well in these difficult times God provides, psalm 121 says. ‘I lift up my eyes to the hills – from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to join us in worship please feel welcome to do so, they are short services which I pray bring some comfort and joy. You’ll find them on our website and our Facebook page along with our Holy Week meditations and Good Friday material for children.

Come, join the trend, be part of the community of St. Nicholas Codsall and St. Peter’s Codsall Wood even though we are apart.

I leave you with that wonderful psalm 121 maybe some will find it helpful as a prayer in times of difficulty.

Psalm 121 Assurance of God’s Protection

A Song of Ascents 1 I lift up my eyes to the hills - from where will my help come? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. 4 He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. 6 The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.

God’s Blessings Revd. Marg

I LIFT UP MY EYES TO THE HILLS

Psalm 121 I want you to spend some time looking around you. Many of us have now become very familiar with our internal living. My husband and I began with a ‘to do list’. The things that we had put off doing since we had arrived here 2yrs ago. The boxes that were still unpacked, the spot of painting and clearing out. The list ranged from – ‘putting up mirror on landing to sorting out shoes. I suppose like many at first, I considered that the quarantine period might not be too long. As time has gone by the list largely completed meant thinking, ‘what shall we do next’? It seems that time and energy had been given to tasks that gave short lived gratification and then on to the next.

Then there was the question about what I could offer as a Priest with churches that had locked doors. It was a challenge, but I love a challenge and began to think about on-line services especially as we were beginning to enter a crucial time in the life of the Christian Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter Day. Suddenly instead of the opportunities being less, they became more and more, and I felt my eyes lift up. The household chores had kept me occupied physically but I needed to concentrate on some of the internal ‘to do list’ I had. So on-line streaming of Sunday Services became a reality. The first one done while the church was still open with my small team of Steve & Trish Cooper, Brigid O’Connor and Steve my husband. Learning on the job meant some things didn’t quite work out but, then we were pioneering something none of us had done before. By the following week, we could no longer meet as a group to offer worship but an ‘outside broadcast team of one’ Dan Street and I began to record a number of service and meditation opportunities. By the third week over a 1,000 people had viewed the service and I had been joined in worship by members of our regular congregation and those new to us and maybe new to church.

I had wondered how I would continue to enable people to feel a sense of worship and spiritual growth and the answer had appeared and because of that, more people have hopefully

CITV Afternoon Tea

Unfortunately, in line with governmental policy, we had to cancel our March afternoon tea. The lockdown is still continuing, and so there will not be a tea in May.

We do hope that all our lovely ladies and gentlemen are keeping safe and well, and being supported by their families and friends during this difficult period of isolation.

We look forward to meeting each other again in the not too distant future, when, once more, we can share in the wonderful fellowship and friendship, and enjoy our very special afternoon tea.

Take care. God bless.Ruth and Rosie

Jennie and Sam part 11 I’m getting towards the end of this collection of memories. Most of the family are busy with their own lives and I’m seeing less and less of them. I realised how little I’d written about the eighties and nineties, but Elizabeth married her doctor and they made a loving family as well as a good working partnership, as well as looking after a family comprising Amanda and Fiona and Roger’s four children. Luckily all the children got on well together and even in their teenage years gave their parents very little trouble, with all doing well in exams and going on to study at university. Amanda went into teaching and took a post at a prestigious private school on the outskirts of London and went on to marry a colleague who was born in Spain and she loved her new Spanish family. Fiona studied archaeology and finished up as a professor in the north of England, and after a long time with no apparent boyfriends she visited me one day to tell me she was marrying a colleague, called Margaret. I was surprised but I was genuinely happy that at last she had found someone to spend her life with and be happy. It was a wonderful ceremony in the university chapel, with lots of good natured cheering from students and friends. I managed to make and decorate the cake for them, the last one I did. By then Sam was not at all well, but was well enough to

enjoy his retirement party, given by all the staff at the business he’d built up with my father and went on to have a happy, healthy life after he’d got over the stress the business had caused. We invested the money he made from selling the business in a lovely warm bungalow in a nearby village, so different from the drafty, old house we’d rented from the Trevelyans since the twins were born in 1948. Our retirement was spent in leisure, as all retirement should be, by then we had a comfortable warm caravan and used that for holidays until Sam was in his mid eighties when he lost confidence in towing. We had seen so much of the British Isles and muchof the near continent. He still hadn’t got me onto an airplane.

James had a very successful career in the RAF and, when his service was over he took a job as a civilian instructor in a base about twenty miles away, and he and Mollie bought their own house. She was relieved to be settled in one place at last and able to see more of her mum and dad. Their two children, Thomas and Charlotte each have successful careers.

At the time of writing this I have two children, four grandchildren, four step grand children and twelve great grandchildren, in several parts of the world and, as I said when I started this collection of memories, I was so pleased that they all managed to get to my ninetieth birthday party, except for one great grandson and his wife who are living in her home country of Bolivia. They would have come but their first child was due, who has now been born and I have a great-great grandson named Sam.

I’ve told Elizabeth and James to write their own memories and family stories down. I’m sure that their children and future generations will be thrilled to know more about the twins who were born in 1948 and the lives of people who grew up in the last years of the twentieth century.

This is it for now. I wish every health and happiness to those who read my story of Jennie and Sam and their family, and I’ll have to find other things to fill the time I’ve spent enjoying myself writing this. Jennie Morgan

However, one night, their World was to be plunged into one of despair. The ship all four of their parents were on, got bombed and sunk and both sets of their parents were drowned. Tom and Bridget were left defenceless.

Whatever happened to The World of Hope they had been brought up in?

Both Tom and Bridget went to live with their Grandparents. Not expecting to see each other again or share their grief together and indeed they wouldn’t, except for a chance meeting: but on the first day of their University life, Tom stood back at the bottom of the elevator to let a young female student go first, having been brought up to respect others. As Tom travelled up the elevator behind the girl, there seemed to be a strange feeling about the girl in front of him. Something about her eyes and the smile she gave him when he let her go first. When they got to the top of the stairs, she turned around and thanked him for being so polite. Aghast, he drew away, shocked and disorientated by the day’s events, what was all this about? Then he realised Bridget, his childhood friend, was standing in front of him. Now, a beautiful young woman. The last time they met they were in total despair, not just coming to terms with the bereavement of losing their parents, but parting from each other, now suddenly their lives had a new hope.

Bridget explained how she had followed Tom on social media throughout his life, she had searched the World for someone with his kindness and never found it. She had found out his University Course was the same as hers. Was God reuniting them? She had recognised Tom at the bottom of the elevator, not by his looks but by his kindness on letting her through. Tom had done the opposite he had turned his back on The World of Hope he was brought up in and he expected to last forever, but with it came so much despair to his life and became a self- centred individual. Trust had left him.

Sometimes an act of kindness can bring you a life of friendship and happiness. Tom had stood back at the bottom of the elevator and let Bridget back into his life. Have

Despair and Hope The World could not have been a better place for Tom and Bridget, they lived a few doors apart and both their parents had promising military careers in front of them. They had been childhood friends through Nursery. This was a World full of hope, brimming with new technology, high-speed travel and comfortable living where wages were no longer used just to feed, house and clothe the family, but had a sizable proportion available for disposable use and a glamorous lifestyle.

But how quickly the World was to change.

Both Tom and Bridget’s parents were suddenly sent out to The Falklands and they were left back at home to be looked after by their Aunts and Uncles. At first it was exciting. Their parents were heroes in the local community going out to defend our Country and the children were looked after so well by the community around them.

you ever stood back and let Jesus back into your life? Have you been reunited with the lost friendship of Jesus which you had trusted so much as a child, but turned your back on when the World brought you despair? Or maybe you entered a World which was so comfortable that Jesus was ‘no longer needed’

Coronavirus has led us into a wilderness. We know how difficult Jesus found that and many people will find it a bewildering lifestyle too, It has brought a new perspective to our comfortable vibrant Church life with services, which bring so much harmony and Christian companionship, meeting groups and a wonderful collection of dedicated people supporting The Church through their talents. Now it is on lock down. Whoever cared who bothered to lock the Church up every night, where is the Church key now? Will it get lost? We have never experienced life without a Church to be open for the Community for services, weddings, baptism etc .Now we are inThe Wilderness, isolated and scared. Financial insecurity is a reality facing many people, as their source of income evaporates in a few short days. Food is difficult to guarantee, as many supermarket shelves are empty. Greed and fear has entered a World, which we are not used to being without anything we wanted.

The elevator of life has stopped.

When Jesus came out of the Wilderness he introduced us to God’s World where the vineyard worker, the fisherman, the leper, the desperate girl who stretched to get a touch of Jesus’s cloak were all as important as each other in God’s eyes. He taught us to care for each other.

Tom stood back to let Bridget onto the elevator and brought Hope back to his life. Will you stand aside and let Jesus back into your life?

Will you let Jesus bring you Hope from this time of Despair? John Parry

Loneliness at the Virtual Chelsea Flower Show, 19th – 23rd May

All sorts of themes are chosen for the Chelsea Flower Show, but this year’s theme turned out to be scarily appropriate for the Spring of 2020: loneliness and mental health. For, according to Sue Briggs, RHS Director General, “many feel they need gardening in their life now more than ever before, for their mental and physical wellbeing during this national emergency.”

Writing on RHS website (www.rhs.org.uk), Sue Briggs says: “This applies to everyone from those who are having to self-isolate to families planning, maybe for the first time, to grow their own food.”

And so, “for these reasons, and to do more to support the industry, the RHS will create a Virtual RHS Chelsea Flower Show, to celebrate our great horticultural industry and gardening heritage.” The Virtual Show will run from Tuesday 19th May to Saturday 23rd May.

Guy Barker, chief horticulturalist at the RHS said: “Nurturing plants can make you less lonely and release you from troubles.”

Take exercise for even half an hour a day – and lower depression! Here is some good news for us all: if you are feeling low, get moving. A recent study at Harvard has found that even just half an hour of exercise a day can lower the risk of depression by 17 per cent.

So – even though we are told to stay home at present, do a work-out in your living room, run around the garden a dozen times, or run up and down your staircase 20 times - anything to get your heart pounding and your body moving!

Saluting Free Trade

This month (Feb) we can celebrate twodecades of the Fairtrade movement, foundedback in 1995. Recent research showed that 78per cent of the UK public now recognise theFairtrade Mark, which stands for the world’slargest and most recognised fair-trade system. Its aim is to secure a better deal for farmers and workers.

There was concern regarding the DistrictCouncil’s Site Allocations proposal for theprovision of a total of 33 travellers’ pitches bythe year 2028. A dedicatedconsultation website had also been set up atwww.waterylanecodsall.co.uk giving access toinformation and a response form for theduration of the consultation period 24November to 23 December. [Although theconsultation period has ended, the website isstill accessible at the time of writing in mid-January].

Synopsis compiled by Mike Smith attempting –if not always succeeding – accuracy insubstance and interpretation. Full copies ofthe minutes can be viewed on the CPCwebsite at www.codsallparishcouncil.co.uk

The good thing about commuting to work

Next time you are standing in a crowded traincarriage or bus on your way to work, or evencycling or walking there in the rain, considerthis, you are better off than those who aredriving. Hard to believe? A recent study hasfound that people who make a regularcommute that involves some sort of physicalactivityare in better mental shape, sleepbetter, and are happier than those who drive towork.

As one researcher at the University of EastAnglia explained: “You might think that thingslike disruption to services or crowds ofcommuters might have been a cause ofconsiderable stress. But as buses or trainsalso give people time to relax, read, socialise, and there is usually an associated walk to thebus stop or railway station, it appears to cheerpeople up.” Another associated study hasfound that people who give up the car and usebus or train to get to work, lose weight.

Food intolerance

Do you believe that you are intolerant tocertain foods? It seems that more than one infive of us could be avoiding certain foodsbecause we have become convinced that weare allergic or intolerant towards them.A surveyfor the Food and Drink InnovationNetwork found that dairy and gluten are themost common types of food which we give up.This has enormous implications: up to a thirdof all households could by now have had toadapt to having a member of their family eitherunable or unwilling to eat certain food. This inturn has spawned a phenomenal growth in the industry which supplies us with foods free fromgluten, lactose, nuts, or other ingredients.

Good fruit

When you finish this story, you will want to eatsome fruit. It seems that eating just one or twopieces of fruit a day can cut the risk of a heartattack or stroke by up to 40 per cent. A recentstudy by Oxford University has found thatpeople who eat fruit daily have a far lower rateof heart disease, and a lower rate of the twomain types of stroke. And the more oftenpeople ate fruit, the more the risk fell. Another recent study, at Washington State University, has found that an apple a day can also helpkeep obesity away, as it makes people feelfuller for longer.

CODSALL COMMUNITY ARTS FESTIVAL ASSOCIATION REFUNDS STATEMENT ARTS FESTIVAL 2020 The trustees, committee and volunteers involved in the organisation of our 2020 Festival over the past nearly 2 years are so sorry that all our events have had to be cancelled due to the circumstances that have developed since 16th March. The committee wishes our patrons and supporters a safe and well future while the current pandemic runs its course. We are very grateful to all those who supported our Festival by purchasing tickets in such large numbers. We had arranged a wide and varied programme which, judging by the numbers of tickets sold for every event, seems to have appealed right across our local communities in Codsall, Brewood, Perton, Pattingham, Tettenhall and other outlying villages. Codsall Community Arts Festival is a registered charity and is a non-profit-making organisation. We rely, essentially, on ticket sales proceeds and donations to enable us to pay our suppliers who contribute to the staging of our events. However, we wish to offer to our supporters the option of a refund of the cost of the tickets they have purchased for our 2020 Festival. While we will in due course try to organise a replacement festival, our next Festival is not scheduled until March 2022, so we regret that it is not possible to carry tickets forward. There are three options to consider.

1. REFUND BY BACS The fastest, cheapest and easiest way to receive a refund is as follows: Send an email to our treasurer at [email protected] with (i) your name and contact details provided on purchase of your tickets, (ii) details of the events for which you purchased tickets, (iii) the amount of refund claimed and (iv) your bank sort code and account number. A BACS payment will then be processed to the account you have nominated. In line with GDPR Regulations, your email will not be shared and will be deleted as soon as the refund payment has been made.

2. PAYMENT BY CHEQUE For those who prefer not to use the BACS payment facility, send to Mrs Kath Cartwright, 16 Primrose Gardens, Codsall WV8 1PA

10

(i) a stamped addressed envelope, (ii) your tickets or, if not retained, a list of the events for which you purchased tickets,(iii) the contact details supplied when you purchased the tickets and (iv) the amount of refund claimed. A cheque will then be posted to you (please present the cheque as soon as possible).

3. DONATIONS We have already received several offers of donations for which the trustees are immensely grateful. Those who are able to and wish to help the Festival Association to recover from this difficult situation, are requested either (i) to email us to confirm, if it be the case, that they do not wish to claim a refund (we have already received several such emails), or (ii) claim as above a partial refund, or (iii) make a separate donation by cheque payable to Codsall Community Arts Festival Association or by BACS (bank details will be provided on request), and(iv)if a taxpayer, request from us a Gift Aid Form for completion and return to Mrs Kath Cartwright at the address in 2above. This will enable us to claim HMRC relief. We expect to be able to process refunds within 5 days of receipt of your request. We ask that you communicate your intention to us as soon as possible and in any event before the end of April so that all transactions can be completed before our accounts year end in July. If you have any query in respect of any aspect of this statement, please either email us at [email protected] or telephone 07852200421.Once again, thank you all for your support of our Festival. Please do visit our website later in the year for announcements regarding future events.

GAVIN WILLIAMSON, M.P.

“I hope everyone is well and keeping in good spirits during this challenging time. I am sure that everyone would join with me in wishing the Prime Minister well and to all those who are suffering from coronavirus across the nation.

I want to take the opportunity in this column to talk about the recent coronavirus outbreak. Let me reassure you that the NHS is well prepared to deal with incidents like this, and I am assured that the Government has a clear path to ensure

the public is protected.

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care has announced strengthened legal powers to bolster public health protections against coronavirus. The regulations have been put in place to reduce the risk of further human-to-human transmission in this country by keeping individuals in isolation where public health professionals believe there is a reasonable risk an individual may have the virus.

The UK is one of the first countries to have developed a world-leading test for the new coronavirus, and the NHS is ready to respond appropriately to any cases that emerge. Clinicians in both primary and secondary care have already received advice, covering initial detection and investigation of possible cases, infection prevention and control, and clinical diagnostics. The Government has also provided £20 million to the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations to produce a vaccine to combat coronavirus.

The Government recently launched a public information campaign setting out how everyone can take steps to minimise risk to them and their families:

This page is being updated every day at 2 pm until further notice, in addition to press briefings and parliamentary statements.

If you have any concerns about your health or symptoms, please call 111.

Finally, I want to thank all of those who are continuing to help us fight this virus. Our NHS staff, delivery drivers and supermarket employees are the people that are keeping us going and on the frontline in the fight against

COVID-19 and are deserving of all our thanks and appreciation.

As always, please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries or issues you would like to raise with me. I can be reached by email at [email protected], or you can phone my office on 01902 846616.”

Notes on Russell House and the lupin

Many of the recent residents of the village will not be aware of the background to Russell House, located on the main Wolverhampton Road, now a GP practice in the centre of the village and its close association with the development and commercialisation of the modern lupin flower.

The form of lupin that we know today was developed by George Russell beginning around 1911 on his allotments in York where he started the long slow process of gradually selecting from the basic reds and blues of what had been introduced from North America and versions that had been native to Southern Europe for many hundreds of years. Others were also working on similar lines but it was George Russell who had the single minded dedication to devote most of his life to this one challenge. The result was a new and beautiful strain that were strong, compact and able to thrive in the British climate offering an amazing range of striking colours. However, he resisted all approaches to sell the resultant plants as a money making business; fame and fortune was of no interest and he went to great lengths to protect his seedlings.

During this same period James Baker, whose father was well known in the local shoe trade, ran a thriving nursery in the centre of Codsall with many acres of land and supplying plants to customers worldwide through exhibiting at all the prestigious shows including Chelsea. He would also go on to become Chairman of Wolves during their most successful period – to date.

Page 38: CODSALL PARISH MAGAZINE - WordPress.com · Bellringing: Andrew Gordon 01952 243806 Bellringing tuition available St. Nicholas Toddler ... idea when our meetings will resume. Our May

It was in 1935 that he met George Russell, then aged 78 and persuaded him to go into partnership; Bakers would take over the propagation and promotion but would forever retain the name Russell Lupin. So in 1936, George and some 1,500 plants were transferred from York to a new 30 acre site at Boningale together with Arthur Heard who had become George’s right hand man. Baker’s Codsall continued as the head office with its own large display area. Boningale became a magnet for visitors in June to see the blooms and in 1937 some 80,000 people paid 6 pence each for entry with proceeds going to the Blind Institute. George continued his work at Boningale during the war years so that new versions were available afterwards to allow Bakers Nursery to regain its former prominent position. He died in 1951 aged 94 having just been awarded an MBE and was buried in Boningale churchyard in an unmarked grave as was his wish.

Unfortunately, the nursery business started to decline during the 60’s, James Baker suffering with serious heart problems, a virus attacking the lupin stock and eventually the Codsall premises were sold for residential development and Boningale struggled on until 1977 when it was bought by locals, Michael and Pat Edwards, Mike having worked there for several years and been frustrated by restrictions on the many new ideas he had to modernise and meet the demands for all-year-round availability of a wide range of plants for customers. The beginnings of the modern garden centre. The development of George Russell’s lupins has continued relentlessly by Pat and others to the point where it can be supplied in every colour of the rainbow, almost unique in the plant world. Sadly, Pat passed away in February 2018.

It’s good to know that Codsall was the place where George’s lifelong dedication and determination was turned into a business allowing people all over the world to appreciate and marvel at the colours and patterns that have evolved.

This month the Church celebrates the Ascension of Jesus, the sending of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and the fact that our God is a Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. After the Resurrection, Jesus was seen on the road to Emmaus, by the Sea of Galilee, in houses, etc. He encouraged his disciples, and said that He was sending them to all corners of the earth, as his witnesses. 40 days after Easter, Jesus ascended into heaven; his work on earth was done. The disciples returned to Jerusalem, and on the fateful morning of Pentecost, there was suddenly the sound as of a mighty rushing wind. Tongues of flame flickered on their heads, and they began to praise God in many tongues – to the astonishment of those who heard them. That morning the Holy Spirit came to indwell all those who believed in Jesus: the Church was born. And so we have a triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Life in quarantine

Full marks to Jamie Oliver for his Channel 4 series, ‘Keep Cooking and Carry On’. He showed us how to make tasty meals with basic ingredients and a minimum of fuss.

The pandemic prompted other encouraging responses. One mother in the ‘at risk’ category said her adult children thought she was immortal until now. Now they ring her every day to see how she’s getting on. An elderly clergyman had offers to shop from two new neighbours whom he hardly knew. The whole nation stopped taking the National Health Service for granted and started showing gratitude. Telephone, television, the internet and email prevented many from going stir-crazy. Some even tried the cryptic crossword, though newcomers should be warned it takes years to learn its secrets!

The isolation was tough for many. Isolated families had to get used to each other’s company and foibles for long periods, away from the park or beach. Couples were parted from each other by distance or illness. Those living alone were cut off from visitors and communal activities. Churchgoers missed Holy Communion at Easter for the first time. That should help us identify with millions of Christians across the world who have to pray in secret because their neighbours would persecute them if they did so publicly.

Alone-ness, rather than loneliness, can be productive. Albert Einstein valued time alone, when he could “go for long walks on the beach so that I can listen to what is going on inside my head.” Isaac Newton’s greatest discoveries began when he escaped the effects of the bubonic plague, by returning home to the family farm in Lincolnshire. He had time to observe what was going on around him and, yes, that did include watching the famous apple fall.

When the bubonic plague was at its peak, the Reformer Martin Luther wrote: “I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance inflict and

pollute others and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, He will surely find me and I have done what He has expected of me, and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others.”

Real Easter Eggs

This Spring a record breaking 3,000 Real Easter Eggs were bought and donated to food banks through a usually ‘quiet’ online scheme. The ‘Donate an egg to a food bank scheme’ is run by the Meaningful Chocolate Company which, for the past ten years, has been making The Real Easter Egg.

David Marshall CEO said: “What is moving is that people were donating their purchase to someone they will never meet or hear from, but they trust that the Easter story, which come with each egg, will make a difference and the chocolate egg give a treat. One customer told us she had a legacy from her father and wanted to use some of it to send a pallet of eggs to those in need.

“Ten years ago, churches and schools helped us create The Real Easter Egg, with its copy of the Easter story in the box, and its support of Fairtrade chocolate and charitable causes. There can be no more fitting a tribute than for us to continue to support, share and give to those in need.”
