A Word From Your MPMy wife often jokes to me that, as an MP, if I were invited to the opening of an envelope, I would turn up and be present. I always feel that this is a little bit harsh, though it is one of the real pleasures of being a Member of Parliament to have the opportunity to open new facilities. Indeed, it was such an honour that I received just after the Easter weekend, when I was asked to open the new play equipment area by Bilbrook Village Hall.The creation of the new play area was down to the hard work, enthusiasm and dedication of both the Parish Council and numerous volunteers, who put a huge amount of time and effort into raising the money to provide this wonderful new facility for children in both Bilbrook and Codsall.At the opening ceremony, the children were so desperate to get on and play with the wonderful new equipment that the gates had to be opened early, so that it could be enjoyed by the children.Indeed, everything about the day seemed absolutely perfect, with throngs of people flooding down to the village hall. The children passed the time enjoying the play equipment, while the adults relaxed with a nice cup of tea and a piece of cake. The children’s entertainer painted hundreds of children’s faces and, of course, the sun was shining. Indeed, the scene was reminiscent of an Enid Blyton novel, with everyone having a very jolly time. The facilities provided at the play area are truly outstanding and, already, my children have insisted that I take them down numerous times, so that they can play on the new roundabout, slides, swings and innovative rope pyramid. I have greatly enjoyed these visits and have, myself, made great use of the conveniently placed picnic benches, which provide the opportunity to sit down, relax and soak in the beauty of the surrounding countryside.I think it is a huge sign of a play area’s success when you have your children nagging you not to watch television, not to play on a computer, but to go down to the play park. So, a big well done to all those involved. Keep up the good work and keep making our villages of Bilbrook and Codsall ever more beautiful, with ever better facilties for both young and old to enjoy. Tips from Your Local PGA Proat Ledene Golf Centre
Last month we looked at the pitch shot, this is a shot which will travel mainly in the air and is especially useful when you are around the green and faced
with a hazard in front of you or you simply want the ball to land softly. This month we will look at the chip and run shot, which is equally useful to perform around the green especially from the fringe of the green or when the green has undulating slopes on it. To execute this shot properly you can use a variation of clubs.
1. 1. Try to visualise the shot in your mind, a good rule is to look to carry the ball a third of the way to the hole and let it roll the remaining two-thirds to the hole. (Remember the idea of this shot is less air time but more ground time)
2. 2. Using a pitching wedge or even an 8 or 9 iron, make sure the stance is narrow with the ball positioned towards the back of the stance and the knees are in a flexed position, the weight of the body and the shaft of the golf club are leaning slightly to the left with your arms hanging down from your shoulders. Adopt the stroke you would use with a putter, take the club back with the stroke being controlled by the shoulders and arms
3. Make sure the wrists stay firm during the shot and the hands stay ahead of the clubface,the rhythm of this shot is important, try to feel that the pace and length of the back swing matches up with the forward swing as I mentioned in the previous article with pitch shots around the green. Whether you pitch or chip and run the ball remember the the angle you create at address is maintained throughout the shot and a final thought, always try to get the ball on the ground as quickly as possible and simplify your shots around the green.
