Celebrating 175 years of education
in King’s Somborne In October of last year another milestone was reached in the history of our village school when it celebrated its 175th anniversary. Education Sunday, which is traditionally set aside to focus on and celebrate education in the country, was chosen to mark this occasion . The service, led by Lay Minister Sue Holligan, was well attended by pupils past and present, parents, staff, villagers and friends of the school. The school and village are rightly proud of their school and its founder Rev. Richard Dawes, who was Vicar of King’s Somborne from 1837 until 1850.
The service opened with the lighting of the worship candle and recitation of the candle prayer by Hannah Yr 6 and Sam Yr 5, after which the hymn ‘Guide me O thou great Redeemer’ was sung. This was followed by prayers of Thanksgiving read by present pupils from the school, namely Yr1 pupils Mason, Luke, Isla and Joe, Yr 2 pupils Ted and George and Yr 3 pupils Toby and Bella. Appropriately the first prayer remembered the Rev. Dawes.
Other prayers remembered teachers and all those supporting the work of the school and visiting speakers. There were thanks too for the amenities enjoyed, the KSSA, friends and those working in all areas of the school. This was followed by a prayer from the past read by church warden David Bevan, who was a pupil in the late 60s, and the school prayer, read by Libby Yr 3.
An account of the history of the school was led by Headteacher Ms Bidois,
Past pupils bridging the generation gap:
Audrey Thomas 1952-1957 Jessica Clayden 2008-2015
5
helped by Charlotte Yr 2, Toby, Bella and Samuel Yr 3, and Eloise Yr 3. Two versions from John chapter 6 were read – one by past pupil Audrey Thomas and one by Sam Yr 5. The school’s very strong emphasis on music was demonstrated through the choir’s singing of ‘Count on me’, a gospel medley conducted by Catherine Cartwright and also the instrumental playing of Yr 3 pupils Bella and Samuel, Yr 5 pupil Izzy and past pupil Helen Yr 9.
Prayers for schools and colleges were read by the present Chair of Governors Brian Gravenor, past Chair John
Cartwright and past pupils Jessica Clayden Yr 9 and college student Lauren Cartwright. The school’s global awareness was well demonstrated by Izzy and Hannah’s account of ‘Share a pencil day’ and the collection was in aid of the education of a child in Uganda.
Following the service all present were invited into school for refreshments, affording an opportunity to wander around the school, seeing it as it is today and to admire the wonderful displays of children’s work.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream at
Little Somborne
On the 29th of May an enthusiastic local audience was treated to the most wonderful production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at All Saints Church in Little Somborne.
Sussex based “This is My Theatre” company bring classical plays and literature to ancient buildings across the South to help rural communities “bring them alive again”.
The small ancient church was the perfect setting for this atmospheric and cleverly devised production with every inch of space, including the aisles and pews, being used to deliver Shakespeare’s masterpiece literally into the laps of the audience. The young and multi-talented cast delivered a breath-taking mixture of superb comic acting, singing, dancing and also played an array of musical
instruments. As an extra dimension they performed several songs and dialogue in Gaelic which was totally mesmerising and added hugely to the sense of wonder and magic of the play.
All those that attended were thoroughly entertained and the only sadness was that the Church was unable to admit more people as they could have sold twice the number of tickets. The Company are hoping to return to perform another play later in the year (to be posted in future Gauntlet editions) and I’d encourage everyone to book early!

The King’s Somborne Primary Summer Fayre turned out to be a spectacular day for Elias Quayle(6), Isla Griffith(6), Luke Goldsmith(6), Jack Goldsmith(4) and William Hughes(5) who did a wonderful job of raising over £100 for the King’s Somborne Primary School.
The children are part of a new program called The Tycoon Academy that teaches important life skills whilst they learn to run their own little business. The children booked a stand at the summer fayre to sell nearly new toys to raise money for the school. It was fantastic to see queues of eager customers lining up to purchase their favourite item. In addition to the toys and gifts, they also sold over 17 packs of NutriSteak, a healthy beef snack recently launched in King’s Somborne .
The experience of running their own stall is part of the Tycoon Academy’s ongoing curriculum. “We use the experience of imagining, planning and running a small business as a vehicle to teach 5-16 year olds critical life skills. From dealing with real customers to giving the correct change, it all helps to develop the self
confidence and critical thinking that will stand them in good stead in later life” - Tam Goldsmith (Director)
Where to next for the Tycoons? Well there is a full calendar of events lined up and we look forward to selling some new and exciting goods at the King’s Somborne Fun day and at Trout ‘n About in Stockbridge. We have just been accepted to attend the Romsey Show and have our fingers
crossed for a stand at Winchester Christmas Markets!
We are also very proud to announce that Tycoon Academy Andover and Romsey will be launching at the end of the month!
Key to the Tycoon Academy is that we always support a local cause at every event we attend. So if you or your child would like to get involved please visit www.tycoonacademy.co.uk or call 01963 393 392. We would love to hear from you!

Parish Council notes July 2018
Mr R Dyke (Open Spaces Warden) was present for part of the meeting.
Also present were Mr Carter from Millgate Winchester and Mr Gardiner from WYG Ltd who outlined their plans for a small development of 5 detached houses on land just off Muss Lane. Councillors raised questions on house and garden sizes and the access route to the development plot and the need for a hard surface before any work started but deferred any further comment until formal plans were submitted.
Cllr Brock recorded his thanks publicly to the volunteers who had helped him clear the weed growth from the Bourne adjacent to Winchester Road and to the neighbours who plied them all with drinks.
The Chairman and the Clerk had met on-site with officers from Hampshire Highways to discuss a range of concerns in the Parish, not least the poor state of the roads and pavement maintenance, railing repairs, gully cleaning, inefficient working practices by contractors and non-retrieval of road signs after work was completed, to name a few. Monitoring and meetings would continue in an effort to get things done more quickly and efficiently.
As RFO, the Clerk confirmed he had submitted bids for external funding totalling £197,515 to enable the new community building/preschool to LoddenTest, HCC and TVBC, each for £25k and to the TVBC Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) fund for £95k leaving £27,515 to come from the Village Hall.
Councillors noted with serious concern the proposal by the Diocese of Winchester to sell the allotment site for development and that the sales literature contained misleading statements; these had been pointed out to them. More to the point, the site was registered as an asset of community value which gave the Parish Council first refusal on its purchase under current legislation. Our wish to take up this option had been registered with TVBC and a meeting requested with the Bishop and/or Diocese officials to discuss their aspirations. The Clerk had given interviews to the press and on radio emphasising the Council’s support for the allotment tenants, some of whose families had managed the same plot for generations. The help of our MP had been requested and petitions were being raised to generate greater awareness of what was seen as an unwanted action by the Church together with hopefully the employment of an investigative reporter. Both the Chairman and the Clerk would continue to liaise with the tenants organising committee on future actions.
The Community Speedwatch co-ordinator’s quarterly report had been circulated to councillors and put on the website. The report contained much statistical information which highlighted the frequency with which drivers exceeded the speed limit around the Parish. The team could do with more members and posters advertising this would be displayed around the Parish, on the website and on Facebook. A request would also be made to deploy the local Police
11
neighbourhood speed detector van more frequently on the A3057 to increase the deterrence factor. Councillors wished the Speedwatch volunteers to be congratulated on their diligence.
The new adult fitness equipment for the main recreation ground and Up Somborne should be installed later this month.
The Parish Council has a dedicated website, as does Neighbourhood Watch, and can also can be found on Facebook and Twitter. Much useful local information is available on these
and by liking our Facebook page and Twitter account. Please take a minute to do this.
As always, a full set of minutes can be found on the Parish Council website and in both Cross Stores and Martin’s Corner Shop.
All Parish Council meetings are open to the public and we look forward to seeing you there.

Supper
On a glorious, hot summer evening, perfect for the occasion, about 80 guests ‘progressed’ around the village to be wined and dined. Thirteen very generous volunteer hosts and hostesses provided delicious food and wine for the itinerant diners, who were all instructed to ‘move on’ to their next hosts after each course.
It was certainly tremendous fun and an enjoyable way to meet lots of new people. The evening was rounded off with a gathering at the Village Hall where all involved met for coffee.
The whole successful event was meticulously planned by D Orange and raised a total of £1,650 for the Fabric Fund of the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul.
Thanks go to D and to all the wonderful hosts and hostesses as well as to all those who participated.

‘Songs for Nature’ A festival of music: The ‘brain child’ of Frederick Hervey Bathurst, took place at the little old Saxon Church, Little Somborne, founded in the early 10th Century by King Alfred: a concert ‘Songs of Nature’, for the Cameron Bespolka Trust, by Octavoce.
The majority of this eight-voice choir comprises young people who have trained since childhood as Cathedral choristers. They have a broad repertoire in their concert programmes. Based in Edinburgh, they have a proud tradition of Fundraising for Charities and are delighted to come South of the Border for the first time. Frederick H-B, a Student at Edinburgh University, is a Member of Octavoce, and this was a repeat performance of the Evening before at the Church of the Hospital of St. Cross, Winchester.
An amazing unique setting for this ‘magical performance’ on a delightful English Summer evening we witnessed ‘star quality’ that could have graced any West End Theatre! The little Church crammed full with support from all the community from Little Somborne, Up Somborne, Ashley and Kings Somborne. I have only taken at random a few of the ‘Songs For Nature’ which were wide ranging: O Radiant Dawn(Macmillan), Shenandoah (American Folk, arr. James Erb), Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square (Manning Sherwin), Skye Boat Song (Trad. arr. Frederick Hervey Bathurst), Loch Lomond (Trad. arr. David Overton).
So many volunteers made this a most memorable occasion. The Cameron Bespolka Trust do wonderful work getting Children involved with Nature and the theme of the Concert did lend itself to that of Nature and Birds. The interval was most enjoyable with wine supplied by the sponsors, Cantina Goccia and Turner Hardy, who supplied the delicious Tomato juice. Pollyann Monk and Lady Caroline H-B did the amazing flower arrangements and special mention must be made of Annabel H-B, also a force behind the scenes. Memorable and successful events don't just happen with out people giving their ‘all’ and I hope I have not missed anyone who contributed! Of course we must also thank the Churches Conservation Trust that keeps this 12th Century Saxon treasure in good repair for future generations to enjoy.
My lasting memory will be of an amazing evening with the even more amazing talent of Octavoce!! Surely this group are destined for international fame? As they say, watch this space!!

On Saturday 16th June Freddie Biddlecombe’s two sons, Adrian and Andy, managed to lead him to Kings Somborne Working Men’s Club, where family, friends and neighbours were waiting to greet him for a surprise 90th birthday tea party.
He was indeed surprised, as everyone had managed to keep the secret, but he was absolutely delighted to see so many people gathered together, many of whom he hadn’t seen for quite some time, but all wanted to be there to help him celebrate this milestone and everyone enjoyed a lovely afternoon reminiscing.
The picture shows Freddie about to cut his special birthday cake, which depicts a Southampton Football Club badge - a team he has long supported - and a Scout badge - a reminder of his many years as a Scout Master.
Freddie would like to thank everyone for all their good wishes cards and gifts, but especially for making the effort to make the day so memorable.

But could the change in scenery and dynamic be just what Sandra needs, especially when
she joins a community dance class?
Showing at Stockbridge Town Hall SO20 6HE at 4.30pm and 7.30pm. Doors open 30 minutes before the start time. Air conditioning has now
been installed for your added comfort.
Tickets £5.00 from Garden Inn and John Robinson in Stockbridge or online via our website www.stockbridgecinema.org.uk

Kitchens by Dave Roberts The Roberts family have lived in three houses in Kings Somborne for over 40 years,
Kevin has done major building and renovation works on each house, so Dave had a childhood of hands-on helping his Dad to make and build.
Dave went to the village school and on to Test Valley, but he was not an academic child and left at 16 to work in the yard at Jewsons.
Then he was lucky to get a job in Stockbridge for Jonathan Shirley Antiques, where he was sent on an antique renovation apprenticeship for one week a month over 3 years, in Hereford. He learned all the techniques for building furniture by hand—mortice and tenon joints, dovetailing, French polishing etc. Here Dave developed his skills and his love for working with wood.
But the antique business was declining and Dave moved after 5 happy years to Howdens in Winchester, where he was trained in CAD to design kitchen layouts. He enjoyed the work, but missed the ‘hands on’ working with
wood, so his next career move was to Winchester Joinery, where he learned to use large woodworking machinery.
He had always wanted to make hand-built furniture, but could not see his way to making a viable living.
With all his skills now in place, Dave became self-employed and worked as a kitchen installer and carpenter, making fitted wardrobes and learning decorating skills. If ever he needed a hand, his Dad was always ready to lend his, literally.
Dave’s second stroke of luck came about 7 years later, when a friend from Church, who had just sold a business, offered to go into business with Dave—Dave would do the hands on woodwork, making all the units, and he would offer financial support and business and marketing skills.
The third stroke of luck came when Dave found the barn in King’s Somborne, enabling him to return to the village and build his handmade kitchens. Kevin helped to insulate the barn and install electricity and office space, so now Dave has his own
business, Ardent Kitchens at New Lease Farm, thanks to his perseverance in acquiring skills, his luck in his Dad (Genes? Example?), some lucky breaks, and lots of hard work.

Somborne and District
Society Due to a mistake on my part, last month’s News Letter was a repeat of the previous month. I wonder how many people noticed!
That News Letter included an account of Terry Macintosh’s talk for which there was a very good write up by Gordon Pearson so here it is:
“Our President Terry Mackintosh gave a fascinating insight into the life of Rex Whistler at the village hall on the 23rd May. Whistler is best known around here for his realistic wall decoration at Mottisfont giving the room a three - dimensional effect.
He was born in 1905 and put his artistic talent to may uses including stage and set designs, landscapes, fashion, book illustration, Wedgewood ceramic designs, posters, ballet designs, wall murals, portraits etc. Clearly a man of many talents.
In his youth Whistler rebelled against the regime at the Royal Academy and was expelled for incompetence so he went to the Slade School of Art where his friendship with Stephen Tennant gave him introductions to Siegfried Sassoon, Cecil Beaton, Edith Sitwell etc.
His work at Mottisfont was painted in 1939 and his remarkable 58 feet long wall mural at Glas Newydd on Anglesey in 1944.
Terry’s presentation was well prepared, delivered and illustrated to the delight of members.”
Now to June and July. At the Summer Fair on July 10th Norman
Denison manned a stall and organised a Quiz which raised some funds and publicised the Society.
On June 27th Mike Reynolds
organised a splendid outing to Wilton where we were treated to a comprehensive guided tour of its Italianate church by an erudite Aberdonian with an encyclopaedic knowledge of English history much of which is reflected in the various artefacts and memorials in this amazing building. Our tour was followed by a very enjoyable meal in the nearby Greyhound Inn. Thank you Mike for a memorable evening.

Saturday 8th September 2018 is the date for this year’s Ride and Stride event.
Help to raise money for the preservation of the region’s historic churches and chapels of all denominations. These precious buildings are central to our communities and villages.
Go as a family, singly or get a group together.
Walk, cycle, drive, ride, run or stroll to as many churches anywhere in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight as you wish.
Half the sum you raise can go to the church which you nominate, for whatever improvement or use they decide.
Walkers - visit the four or more churches in the Sombornes and Ashley – maybe go over to Braishfield, Stockbridge, Houghton, Broughton or Timsbury.
Cyclists – do the above by bike. Or if you are up for it, visit the Winchester churches, St Cross and Olivers Battery. You can arrange a circuit for most of the churches in the Romsey area, it can be over 50 miles. Most churches provide light refreshments on the day and many have toilets.
Strollers - drive to Winchester, there are many churches in close walking distance of each other. These are popular for those taking part and there are refreshments and usually people to meet you.
Postcodes and addresses are provided for all participating churches. Some of my favourites to visit are East Tytherley, East Dean, Timsbury, Awbridge and many in Winchester including St Swithun and St Cross.

Services for the over 50s This will be the third month of the Health Walks, which are being run for 6 months only by Test Valley Council.
They are a great way to get out and meet people and the walk can be adjusted to suit your level of ability, so do not be shy, come for a walk on the second Wednesday of the month (this month the week before the Epworth Lunch on the 8th August). We shall be delighted to see you and there is a drink and a refreshment on offer at the Village Hall afterwards.

Sadly several of our volunteer ‘poppy appeal collectors’ have
become ill during the last year and can no longer undertake the
annual Poppy Appeal. They have been great stalwarts for many
years and will be hard to replace.
Are you able to give some of your time to this very worthy charity?
The appeal takes places the two weeks prior to Remembrance
Sunday which this year actually takes place on Armistice Day, the
11th November. It is also the 100th anniversary of the signing of the
Peace Agreement which brought to an end that terrible war. A whole
generation of young men and women gave their lives to that conflict
and many suffered injuries and combat stress for the rest of their
lives.
Since then we have had several conflicts that have affected our
Armed Forces and still today we have service people deployed all
over the world in various theatres of need. The Royal British Legion
depends on the annual appeal to help these casualties and their
families. We, as an area, have increased our giving to the Appeal
year on year, and I would hate to think that we would not be able to
carry on supporting the RBL because we cannot cover our area of
collection.
Please do think seriously about helping and should you wish for
more information do please get in touch with me as soon as possible.
Thank you!

Confirmation We are thinking of arranging a Confirmation Group to explore what it means to be ‘confirmed’ as a member of the Church.
We would start after the Summer, and meet weekly over several weeks. People would then be free to choose whether they would like to be confirmed themselves locally.

Somborne Sisterhood WI A wonderful turn out on a hot, Friday evening for our July meeting – chocolate making with committee member and keen cook, Ute Brock. Before the meeting got under way the challenge was to bring the hall down to a suitable temperature for working with chocolate, which we did (eventually)!
Samantha Boot made brief announcements, welcoming all attending, including 4 new members, before introducing Ute, who talked us through the plan for the night.
It was all hands on deck melting chocolate, cooling chocolate, piping chocolate ganache and trying to resist licking the bowls. Little chocolate bon
bons were filled with ganache and then covered with melted chocolate, and chocolate lolly pops were piped onto special transfer acetate and decorated with sprinkles before being allowed to set.
All attending were able to take home a number of professional-looking edible goodies – and some even managed to sneakily eat a few spoonfuls of melted chocolate at the end… waste not, want not and all that!
It was a lovely meeting with everyone helping each other, chatting and laughing. Samantha thanked Ute for a fantastic evening, the raffle was drawn and the meeting closed. A big thank you to everyone who helped wash up, scrub down surfaces and put tables and chairs away. It was much appreciated.
Next meeting – Friday 3rd August 2018, 8pm, King’s Somborne Village Hall which we will use as a base, before heading off on a Treasure Hunt around the village. Please wear suitable shoes/clothes.

King’s Somborne WI The fact that Wimbledon coincided with a certain football match against Croatia meant that fewer members than usual were present to welcome our speaker, Geoff Burch, a former engine driver in the Age of Steam.
Geoff’s reminiscences included a train, too heavily loaded to go up a hill; the effects of heavy snowfall; a runaway train that left its driver behind (amazingly none of the passengers realised the train had no driver); transporting circus animals; Butlin’s Camp trains; and the problems of driving in a pea-souper fog when a change in the noise of the engine indicated a tunnel, or the smell from certain factories would mark the progress of the train.
Geoff recalled when wooden boards across the engine displayed the name of the train, such as the Bournemouth Belle, the Cornish Riviera, and the Cathedral trains.
Geoff’s vast collection of photographs included many contributed by former colleagues.
Morning coffee at a nearby Lavender Farm will be this month’s W.I. “Extra”. Other business matters included plans for the August meeting, which will be a social evening when members may bring a guest, and more details of plans for our Centenary Year in 2019. (Watch out for the one hundred golden daffodils in the churchyard next Spring.)
An idea from the floor, that it was time for a refresher course on First Aid, was welcomed.
As a result of so many business items we finished a little later than usual, but just in time to go home and console those who were disappointed by the result of the match with Croatia!
Mary Pollock
An Appeal from the WI As part of our Centenary year, we hope to have an exhibition of photographs and mementoes of our W.I. Do any former members have items that could be included? If you can help, please write your name, in pencil, on the back of photographs, old programmes etc .—it would be very helpful in ensuring that they are returned to you.
We hope to have a lively and interesting. Exhibition. It may be possible for the exhibition to be on display in the church during next August.

As I write this, we have just finished another wonderful year of Tiny Tots. We rounded off the year in traditional style with our Tiny Tots picnic. This year we held it in the grounds of the church and enjoyed our food in the welcome shade of one of the trees.
The picnic gave us a chance to say goodbye and good luck to our school leavers. We will miss you Isla, Jack, Sophie and Jasmine but we know you will have a brilliant time at big school. We also bade farewell to Katie and Tam who have put so much time and effort into helping run the group. Thank you for all the fun you have given us! We also thanked Linda, Sue, Marilyn and Bridget who are always there to help and provide very welcome cups of tea. Our sessions wouldn't be the same without you!
We have now managed to secure enough support to allow our sessions to continue come the Autumn term - huge thanks to all who have volunteered!
Our first session back will be on Tuesday 11th September .
We meet each Tuesday afternoon in term time, starting at 2pm with a drink and biscuit (for adults as well as children)! We then enjoy a story and fun activity together, followed by crafts and end by 3.15 (in time for school pick-up) with songs and music. If you find your children are napping at 2pm, you are very welcome to join us mid-session. It would be really great to see you and your children there!
Hayley, Katie and Tam
Thank you to the Parish Council I am sure I am not the only local walker who values the work undertaken by the Parish Council to keep our footpaths walkable without having to brave vicious nettles, brambles and other vegetation.
The path up the hill from Froghole was particularly overgrown and it
was therefore a great pleasure to find that Michael Rebbeck had been busy cutting the hedges back for us. Thank you to him for his efforts, especially in the heat we have been enjoying, and to the Parish Council for organising this work to be done. It is very much appreciated.

The Lay Minister has the last word
Printed and published by the Parish of Somborne with Ashley, Church of St Peter and St Paul, King’s Somborne, Hampshire. SO20 6PW
Rev. Jill’s jottings
Dear Readers and Residents
I’ve been visiting the Church in Somborne to help out while everything is being re-organised and you await the appointment of your new Vicar. Now that I am retired from being a full time Vicar I have become a ‘Rentavic’!!
There’s a very old hymn which encourages us to ‘Count our Blessings, name them one by one’ – to be a glass half full person I suppose. It goes on to say ‘And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.’
Reading through the July edition of The Gauntlet I was quite bowled over by the reports and the list of village groups and activities. I think I must congratulate you all on bucking the modern trend for ‘virtual living’ in favour of real life activities – as well, of course, of having the good sense to live in your lovely villages! There are clearly many blessing in the Sombornes and Ashley.
The old hymn ascribes the blessing of this life to the presence of the Good Lord. I believe this to be true. Looking around at the beauty, wonder and complexity of this world, it is truly awesome. Astonishingly its Creator has given us the responsibility for its care and made so much for us to enjoy – beautiful sunsets, fragrant scents, the song of birds and so much else, I could fill pages!
In addition I looked up your panel in my book about the Test Valley Tapestry. I discovered that your parish of Somborne with Ashley has the distinction of three redundant, restored churches – possibly the only parish in the UK to boast such a total!
Although the churches are redundant now, there are others still active, playing their part in village life, reminding everyone of the precious possibility that this life is not all there is. Behind it all is (as Winchester Cathedral describes it) The Beauty Beyond …….. a greater reality.
Certainly something to ponder if any of you every have a spare moment in such busy villages!
Shalom
