Coatings Worlds Top Companies Report (pg. 38) offers our readers in-depth analysis of the global coatings industry. The report is one of our most popular issues, offering our readers a comprehensive look at the top players in the paint, coatings, adhesives and sealants in-dustry. I hope you find this report insightful and helpful in understanding the complex and diverse global coatings, adhesives and sealants markets. I welcome your feedback. If your coatings company had at least $100 mil-lion in revenue for 2014, please email so I can add it to the online version.

This year we have profiled 80 companies down from last years 87. We had to remove the following six companies for not having revenue of at least $100 million in 2014: Chokwang (73), Diamond Vogel (68), NOF Metal Coatings (71), Tnemec (83), Whitford (72) and Yips Chemical (59). Quest Specialty Chemicals (75) was recently acquired by Valspar.

This year we did add one first-timer to the list: Poland-based Snieka (68).No doubt the weakening of the euro against the U.S. dollar had a signifi-

cant impact on many of the European companies on the list. There were some changes to the top five. PPG (01) nudged out AkzoNobel

    (02) for the number one slot. This can be attributed to the companys ac-quisition of Comex, an architectural coatings company with headquarters in Mexico City, in a transaction valued at $2.3 billion. The acquisition, the second-largest in PPGs history, added a leading architectural coatings busi-ness in Mexico to the companys already extensive portfolio.

Charles Bunch, CEO expressed confidence that PPG will continue to grow in 2015 and beyond.

As we look forward into 2015, we expect sales of our coatings busi-nesses to approach 95 percent of PPGs total sales, Bunch said. We are well positioned to benefit from continuing global growth due to our broad geographic reach, excellent product offering, and pipeline of new and inno-vative products. Additionally, we will maintain our heritage of operational excellence and cost management.

Ton Bchner, CEO of AkzoNobel expressed measured optimism in his statement in the companys annual report. The beginning of the year was very much dominated by unfavorable conditions with regard to curren-cies, while markets did seem to recover to a certain extent, he added. That changed in the second half of the year when Europe again experi-enced a lack of growth and the recovery that everyone had hoped for didnt materialize. At the same time, we saw some of the Asian economies and Latin America slow down. These were serious economic challenges that we needed to adapt to. In terms of financial performance, we saw the first clear proof points that our strategy is working, despite the market headwinds.

  • Call for PapersDesigning Innovation Strategies for the FutureThe American Coatings Association (ACA), in partnership with Vincentz Network (VN), is calling for papers to be presented at the American Coatings ConferenCe 2016 (ACC). This major technology forum for the coatings industry, which will take place April 11-13, 2016 in Indianapolis, Ind. is held in conjunction with the American Coatings Show, April 12-14, 2016. The Indiana Convention Center will be the site of this perennial record-setting gathering of the worlds best inno-vators in coatings technology. Leading experts from paint companies, raw ma-terial suppliers, academia, and government laboratories will present the new-est breakthroughs and scientific research in areas crucial to the advancement of the coatings industry and its many and varied customers. Attended by in-dustry representatives from around the world, research scientists are encour-aged to support global information exchange by presenting their work in this recognized, world-class technical and scientific forum.

You are kindly invited to submit abstracts detailing your previously unpub-lished, high-level technical research results which will be considered for pres-entation at the conference. Selection of abstracts for presentation at the ACC is highly competitive, and researchers need to be sure they convey the scientific significance of their work and detail advances over any prior presentations or publications. In short, the ACC seeks to highlight new, innovative work and re-search findings. Topics may include advancements in all coatings categories and raw materials, novel formulations, laboratory and analytical methods, pro-cessing technology and equipment, environmental and/or sustainability ben-efits. In addition, organizers of the ACC are also interested in thoughtful study and analysis of R&D and innovation management challenges faced by industry professionals, including continuing education and professional advancement.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The conference organizers select proposed presentations for the AC ConferenCe based on three key criteria: scientific significance, novelty, and potential value-added to the industry.

Please note, that this selection is based solely on the content of the abstract submitted, so a clear and detailed description of the work aligned with these cri-teria is strongly encouraged. Acceptance of an abstract will require the author(s) to submit a final paper for a designated session or forum (see important dead-lines). Again, prospective authors are strongly encouraged to clearly state the researchs unique contribution in their abstracts, as it aligns with the listed criteria. Student research is encouraged, and submitted abstracts will be fully considered. Students whose work is accepted for the ACC will be eligible for support by industry sponsors. The American Coatings ConferenCe also features a highly publicized and featured Poster Session. This informal venue is often favored by participants, and in particular students, for its casual and intimate atmosphere that fosters fuller discussion of the work. Applicants can request that their abstract be considered solely for presentation in this Poster Session.

Finally, all submitted final papers will be considered by the conference organ-izers for possible publication. ACA retains right of first refusal on all presen-tations accepted for the AC ConferenCe.

American Coatings AwArdThe most outstanding paper presented at the ACC will be honored with the Amer-ican Coatings AwArd. Sponsored by ACA and VN, the recipient of this prestigious award will receive a $ 2,500 award and an attractive sculpture.

The Roon AwardThe Roon Award is currently being administered by ACA to recognize outstand-ing research in coatings science. Authors wishing to have their final paper con-sidered for the ACA Roon Award should mark the appropriate designation on the form. As in the past, Roon Award designated abstracts will be evaluated by both the ACC Program Committee and ACAs Roon Award Committee. Authors who have been accepted for Roon Award consideration will be notified sep-arately, and will need to complete and submit their final papers to the Roon Award Committee by Jan. 25, 2016 to be considered.

PPG Completes $5 Million Expansion of Wuppertal, Germany, Coatings PlantPPG Industries recently completed a $5 million expansion at its coatings manu-facturing facility in Wuppertal, Germany. The project added equipment to existing buildings on the campus, supporting up to a 35 percent increase in annual pro-duction capacity of environmentally sustainable waterborne coatings for au-tomotive and industrial applications. The facility, which employs more than 190 people, plans to hire employees to man-age the increased capacity.

The additional capacity will enable PPG to meet increasing demand for its waterborne coatings by automotive manufacturers and industrial custom-ers in the region. Waterborne coat-ings use water as a base instead of the chemical solvents used in traditional coatings. In addition to a heightened focus throughout Europe on using sustainable products and practices, waterborne-coatings demand is being driven by adoption of compact-paint-process technologies by automotive manufacturers in Europe. Compact paint processes reduce the number of st EPS needed to paint a vehicle, en-abling manufacturers to reduce energy used during the process and downsize the space required for the paint process in a manufacturing facility.

Waterborne coatings offer manufac-turers a more sustainable alternative to typical solvent-based coatings by reduc-ing volatile organic compounds, said Jean-Marie Greindl, vice president, auto-motive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) coatings, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and president, PPG EMEA. PPG has been at the forefront of this technology throughout its evolution

and holds a leading position in this seg-ment in Europe.

AkzoNobel Expands Performance Coatings Research Facility in HoustonAkzoNobel Performance Coatings is in-vesting approximately 3 million ($3.4 million) to expand its research and de-velopment facilities in Houston, Texas. The upgraded facility will support the companys Protective Coatings, Marine Coatings and Specialty Coatings busi-nesses. Completion is due in early 2016. The expanded facility will provide a central, state-of-the-art technical re-source for our businesses in the US, cre-ating the critical mass for effective R&D to efficiently support our customers, said Aidan Mernin, RD&I Director for Protective Coatings. The expanded facility will be able to house up to 35 laboratory staff, with 30 skilled technologists employed initially. Key capabilities will include a dedicat-ed area for experimental paint making, a modern paint application laboratory and environmentally controlled drying areas for conditioning of test panels. Enhanced chemical resistance testing will also be available to support the Ceilcote and Enviroline linings ranges in North America. This investment underlines our focus on technology and product innovation and providing technical support for our customers, said Mauricio Bannwart, managing director of AkzoNobels Protective Coatings business. It will be an integral part of our global RD&I func-tion and will directly contribute to our overall growth plans.

U.S. Green Building Council Announces New Alignment with CALGreenThe U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced the availability of a new path forward for California project developers seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certification. This announcement comes in the midst of USGBCs annual mid-year conference for community leaders, Convergence, taking place from June

28July 1 in San Diego. Starting July 1, nonresidential projects in California subject to the mandatory 2013 California Green Building Standards Code (CALGreen) requirements will be able to use an alternative documenta-tion path for LEED. CALGreen is the nations first statewide mandatory green building code, covering nearly all resi-dential and nonresidential construction in California. This new path will make beyond-code green building leadership even more accessible as the state con-tinues to set more aggressive targets for energy and water efficiency. From public policy to volunteer en-gagement to business actions, California is a standard bearer for excellence in green building market transformation, said Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chair, USGBC. As we come together as a community of experts, professionals, advocates and leaders for Convergence in San Diego this week, we are proud to offer more streamlined ways for proj-ects to demonstrate green building lead-ership in California. The alternative documentation path outlines a set of documents that projects may provide in lieu of standard LEED documentation in order to demonstrate LEED compliance. The alternative doc-umentation path will be available for use with measures related to indoor water use reduction, refrigerant man-agement, the storage and collection of recyclables, construction waste man-agement and the use of low-emitting paints and adhesives. The development and release of this set of alternative documentation pathways is a significant step in the co-evolution of LEED and green building codes, said Jeremy Sigmon, director of Technical Policy, USGBC. Leveraging Californias code infrastructure and the obligations of licensed professionals to adhere to the laws of the land, these new streamlined documentation op-tions offer cost savings to project teams while maintaining the quality and rigor of LEED. In turn, projects already de-signing and building to the CALGreen code will find LEED and its many ben-efits more readily within reach. CW

PPG Career Lectures Provide Guidance for Chinese College StudentsPPG Industries recently hosted a series of career lectures at 11 top universities across China, discussing issues related to future careers and offering tips for job hunting to college students.

Building on years of cooperation with universities for PPGs China Scholarship Program, PPG launched the Career Lecture series this year to provide guid-ance for Chinese college students. The lectures were comprised of two ses-sions Professional Experience Sharing

and Job-Seeking Skills Instruction. In the first session, female PPG executives shared personal experiences with stu-dents, addressing concerns about an infe-rior recruitment environment for female engineering students and encouraging students to build confidence to face the challenges of job hunting. The second ses-sion, organized by PPGs partner Career Intelligence, included workshops on job-seeking skills. Career Intelligences career-management programs offer university students in China instruction on creating resumes and skills for job interviews, en-abling students to better prepare them-selves for job-seeking efforts.

Students in their senior year at uni-versity need to prepare for the transition to a work environment, said Cathy Yan, PPG general manager, corporate and gov-ernment affairs, Asia Pacific. We hope our tailored training program will help with their career development. We also hope it will help attract excellent students

    to career opportunities with PPG.

Supporting education is an important part of PPGs social responsibility efforts. In addition to pro-grams for university students in the Asia Pacific region, PPG has launched pro-grams for elementary and middle school students. PPG has hosted a scholarship program for Chinas ten leading universi-ties for 11 years to support the develop-ment of chemistry-related disciplines and enable outstanding students to realize their potential. PPG also set up an Eco Classroom for local elementary and middle school students, where they show and explain to students how a chemical company operates and share PPGs envi-ronmental-protection efforts.

To support its employee diversity, PPG set up the Womens Leadership Council at its Pittsburgh headquarters in 2001 and established its Asian coun-cil in 2006. The council works to create

Results of U.S. Architectural Coatings Industry Research Report Which Compared Business Trends in 2Q15 vs. 2Q14

Each month, Northcoast Research survey a large sample of paint retailers throughout the United States to get a sense for current business trends. Please note that of the three primary architec-tural coatings channels (paint stores, home centers, and retail distributors), this survey is primarily reflective of the distributor channel which tends to see volume growth less than the indus-try; therefore, we view the results as a directional indicator more so than absolute industry volumes. For inquiries regarding this report please contact Kevin Hocevar at 216-468-6924 or [email protected].

Architectural Coatings Sales Volumes Up 2.8% in 2Q15 vs. 2Q14According to industry participants, average volumes increased 2.8% in 2Q15 compared to 2Q14. This represents the strongest volume growth we have seen since beginning our survey and compares to volume growth of 1.1% in 1Q15, 1.6% in 4Q14, and 1.2% in 3Q14. We had previously anticipated strong underly-ing demand in 2015 but harsh winter weather likely deferred projects into 2Q15 which we believe is a major benefit being realized. We are encouraged with the positive trends that have persisted through 2Q15 as paint volumes continue to growth on a year-over-year comparison and we expect 2015 to be solid year and perhaps even better than initially expected. Overall, 71% of respondents witnessed an increase in paint volumes vs. only 14% that saw volumes decline, averaging out to 2.8% year-over-year volume growth and a net increase of 57%.

Price of Paint from Suppliers 2Q15 Paint Prices Remain Positively Skewed 49% of contacts noted an uptick in the price of paint in 2Q15 vs. 2Q14 as our paint price index rose 1.0% compared to average increases of 0.5%-1.0% over the past year. Our research sug-gests that a little bit of price is sticking in the industry but only in the independent dealer channel which is small in size and likely in the low-single digit range. We currently do not believe the store or big-box channels are realizing pricing; however, given the raw material declines, we view the overall price/raws for coatings manufacturers as favorable. We believe that we picked

up potential price increases in our 4Q14 survey where a mean-ingful uptick in contacts were notified of a price increase from manufacturers to take place in 2015. The majority or contacts believed these attempts would be successful and we believe the data we have discovered thus far in 2015 suggests that some de-gree of pricing did in fact stick in the marketplace. Overall, 49% of respondents witnessed an uptick in pricing vs. only 9% that saw pricing decline, averaging out to a 1.0% increase in year-over-year pricing with a net increase of 40%.

Raw Materials Raw Materials Remain at Low Levels but May Have Bottomed OutWe continue to believe coatings manufacturers are poised to benefit from favorable price/raws in 2015 due to the drop in titanium dioxide (TiO2) and raw materials derived from crude oil. With that said, this story is widely known and although some raws have continued to come down since 1Q15, there is already chatter about raws rising as oil prices have bounced off the bot-tom and are currently at 6-month highs. The good news is that propylene has continued its downward trend. Additionally, TiO2 started to drop in 4Q14, accelerated that decline in 1Q15 and remained soft in 2Q15. However, the bad news is that oil prices have trended higher throughout the year which is likely to drive oil based raws higher at some point which could mitigate the upside to price/raws in future quarters.

3-Month Outlook Outlook at Strong Levels as Contacts Expect Busy Paint Season to ContinueOur proprietary Coatings 3-Month Outlook Index reached 0.84 in 2Q15 which compares to a reading of 0.80 sequentially (vs. 1Q15) and a reading of 0.78 year-over-year (vs. 2Q14). Please note that the highest possible reading is +2 (indicating all con-tacts have a very positive outlook) and the lowest possible reading is -2 (indicating all contacts have a very negative out-look). Note that our index reading of 0.84 marks the highest outlook index for a second quarter which we find encouraging as no contacts indicated a negative or very negative outlook. Ultimately, current outlooks remain at encouraging levels which bodes well for industry revenues.

Jotuns Mesh-free Epoxy Passive Fire Protection Coating Receives Praise from ApplicatorsJotachar JF750, the mesh-free Passive Fire Protection (PFP) for all jet fire scenarios, an epoxy coating system for structural steel, has generated significant industry interest, securing numerous global con-tracts and praise from applicators, fabri-cation yards and operators, according to Jotun.

Launched in 2013, Jotachar JF750 promised to help users reduce cost and save time while protecting steel structures against a broad range of hydrocarbon fire scenarios, including jet fires. Two years later, a growing amount of data and on-site customer experience has supported Jotuns product claims. Jotuns sales rev-enues for Jotachar in the first quarter of 2015 have already surpassed totals achieved in the whole of 2014.

According to John Warner, Jotun cat-egory manager for intumescent coatings, the absence of any mesh reinforcement in the Jotachar system means that the required Jotachar thickness for any fire scenario can be applied in a single day. By comparison, six mm is typical for tradi-tional mesh containing products.

Independent tests show that, for a typical 6,000 m2 project, Jotachar can cut material costs by more than 20 per-cent and application time by 60 per-cent, he said. In addition, Jotachar removes the risk of installation errors

inherent in mesh containing systems, while minimising in-stallation time and cost. This has the effect of significantly reducing project complexity and im-proving profitability for the installer.

Customer feedback supports these findings, including endorsements from major PFP users such as Marine and Shore Group, a Thai-based special-ist PFP installer. Managing director, Malcolm Summers, noted that Jotachar enabled the company to meet a very tight schedule on a major offshore PFP yard project. The applicators coated a total area of 1,572 m2 in a week with one pump and a crew of 20 people, he said. This was a first for us.

As a safety critical element helping to save lives while preventing loss of as-sets in the event of a hydrocarbon fire, independent testing and Classification Society Type Approvals are essential for PFP coatings. In addition to certifica-tion to all major Classification Societies, Jotachar JF750 is also approved under Underwriters Laboratories listing scheme for up to 240 minutes protection.

The British Coatings Federation Launches PaintCareThe British Coatings Federation (BCF) announced plans to tackle the issue of leftover decorative paint, much of which ends up in landfills. The plan includes implementing PaintCare, an industry-led project to help create a circular economy, aiming to make better use of the estimated 50 million

liters of leftover decorative paint generated each year in the country.

Various stakeholders across the nation, including decorative paint manufacturers, retailers, trade asso-ciations, waste management compa-nies, local and national government and other third-sector organizations, are backing the program. These stake-holders will be confirming their com-mitment to help create a sustainable circular economy for leftover decora-tive paint, to increase reuse and re-manufacturing rates from two percent to over 50 percent.

At the BCFs Annual Conference in Chester, chief executive Tom Bowtell said of the PaintCare launch, Despite the great strides made by the UK paint industry to reduce their environmental impact, leftover paint continues to end up in landfill. We now have the abil-ity to reuse and remanufacture paint, but challenges remain over creating a national network of drop-off points at council recycling centers, finding markets for remanufactured paint and regulatory issues. The aim of PaintCare is to help remove these barriers, to cre-ate a national solution to the leftover paint problem, but this will not happen overnight and will require collabora-tion from all stakeholders.

The launch of PaintCare was wel-comed by David Cornish, Global Sustainability manager for AkzoNobel Decorative Paints, who commented, Our schemes have already saved 2.7 million liters of paint from landfill or in-cineration, and we are excited to build on this success together with the British Coatings Foundation. PaintCare will help us work together with other parties, especially in government and the waste industry, to address some of the more challenging problems.

Key paint brands associated with the initiative include AkzoNobel (Dulux), Craig and Rose, Crown Paints, Farrow & Ball, Green Farm Paints, Little Greene, Newlife Paints, Manor Coatings, PPG Industries (Johnstones and Leyland), Sherwin-Williams (Ronseal) and Valspar.

HOMAX Popcorn Ceiling Texture Desiged to Help Contractors Increase ProductivityThe HOMAX brand of PPG Industries provides the ideal solution for quick and effective ceiling repair, a process that is typically challenging and time-consuming. In order to help contractors increase productivity, the Homax brand offers PRO GRADE popcorn ceiling tex-ture products with INVISIBLE REPAIR capabilities that simplify popcorn ceiling repair and provide a time-saving solution.

The advanced formula of Pro Grade popcorn ceiling texture replicates com-mercial popcorn texture aggregates typically found in homes, apartment buildings, hospitals and other residential and commercial structures. The prod-uct delivers Invisible Repair capabilities that match existing textures so the new texture blends seamlessly. As a result, contractors can achieve a professional texture match up to four times faster than with traditional repair methods, and with up to four times the coverage pro-vided by traditional aerosols. Pro Grade popcorn ceiling texture can be used for popcorn ceiling repair projects, fixture re-moval repair, or to complete punch lists or patches.

One of the biggest concerns for the contractor or property manager is match-ing the existing ceiling texture without sacrificing too much time on the job, said Mark Hembree, senior marketing manager adhesives, sealants and finish-ing systems, PPG Architectural Coatings. Pro Grade popcorn ceiling texture solves those problems by providing the convenience of an aerosol and a profes-sional, seamless match in less time, with less mess and hassle than with traditional gun and hopper methods.

    With a patented ergonomic grip

designed to provide comfort and control, Pro Grade popcorn ceiling texture is easy to feather into existing popcorn ceiling textures and covers up to eight square feet. In addition, the texture can be ready to paint in 24 hours, if desired.

With packaging that allows for easy storage, one container of Pro Grade pop-corn ceiling texture can be used on mul-tiple projects. After use, simply turn the integrated safety lock to store and reuse leftover texture for future jobs.

The Pro Grade popcorn ceiling texture product is available in 14-ounce aerosol cans at independent paint and home im-provement dealers, PPG PAINTS stores and home center locations nationwide. The Homax Pro Grade family of aerosol textures also includes Pro Grade orange peel oil-based, Pro Grade orange peel water-based and Pro Grade knockdown aerosol wall texture products, which also provide an efficient solution for contractors.

Soothing Blues Create Optimism in the Home, According to Glidden Paint by PPGPuerto Rico home trend color forecasts for 2015 feature soothing yet bold blues, according to experts at GLIDDEN paint, a brand of PPG Industries architectural coatings business.

Societal and consumer trends in 2015 point to the idea of hope. Color experts selected Caribbean Sea (56BG 23/355) as the Glidden paint Color of the Year for 2015 due to its soothing, optimistic and vibrant tones.

Misty Yeomans, color marketing manager, PPG Architectural Coatings, describes the medium blue as reminis-cent of ocean waters and endless hori-zons, similar to beautifully saturated Caribbean seas and cloudless skies. With hues reminiscent of mosaic stones, the color has a noticeably bohemian and laid-back coastal feel.

Yeomans recommended incorporat-ing Caribbean Sea into the home on an accent wall or on backs of bookcases. In addition, using it on the wall at the end of a hallway can create interest, reduce the tunnel effect, and ultimately brighten up a room. The vibrant hue pairs well with complementing whites, neutrals, yellow or golden hues, or with black and white patterns for a modern and fresh look, according to Yeomans. Complementary colors can be incorporated in the form of furniture, decor items or trim paint colors.

By incorporating vibrant, attention-grabbing blues in the home, consumers are sure to feel a sense of hope and en-thusiastic optimism, resembling that of a horizon or endless waves in the ocean, Yeomans explained.

The Glidden paint brand offers a rich tradition of innovation and color inspira-tion, having consistently embodied qual-ity and performance for generations of customers. From the first latex paints de-veloped and marketed under the Glidden brand decades ago to todays broad as-sortment of versatile paints, Glidden paint makes it easy for consumers and paint contractors to turn inspiration into action and add color to peoples lives.

Dunn-Edwards Identifies New Classics in Paint ColorAfter studying hundreds of modern archi-tecture and current trends in color design, Dunn-Edwards culled 158 hues to be added to its new Then, Now and Forever paint palette. This new collection pro-vides designers, architects and consumers a well-researched selection of colors ce-mented in todays design trends.

To identify the true modern-day paint classics, Dunn-Edwards called upon Mark Woodman, color expert on several international color forecasting panels and the past president of the Color Marketing Group. Woodman and Dunn-Edwards took a unique approach in selecting the new classics by examining popular colors of the past and trendy colors today.

We knew that just putting out col-ors saying, Heres something new, isnt enough...it doesnt resonate with con-sumers and with people who just really love color design, said Mark Woodman.

The Then, Now and Forever color palette team examined where color came

To support the launch of the new collection, Dunn-Edwards will introduce a new array of digital tools, including InstaColor, a new mobile app, and ColorView, a color rendering tool that allows you to upload a picture of a room and paint it virtually. Professionals can download color swatches into an expanded range of programs, includ-ing Adobe Illustrator, REVIT and Sketch-Up. And, for the first time ever, with Color-Ark Home consumers will have the opportunity to store their color purchases in an online database for future reference.
