International Paint ProtectiveCoatings, an AkzoNobel business andleading global supplier of high-per-formance protective coatings and fireprotection products, has joined forceswith AkzoNobels Decorative PaintsCanada group, to consolidate sales anddistribution operations under a store-within-a-warehouse concept in Dorval,Quebec. The 25,000 square-foot Dorvalfacility was occupied by InternationalPaint exclusively, operating as a distri-bution service center for the companysprotective coatings and marine prod-ucts. Although the distribution centerslease agreement wasnt due to expireuntil early 2010, it was clear to RichardChampagne, manager of ProtectiveCoatings Eastern Canada, that thefacilitys space requirement was actual-ly larger than what they needed.

During the second half of 2009, con-struction began on the Dorval facilityto transform what was strictly officeand warehouse space, into a layoutfeaturing a traditional paint store, complete with walk-in showroom andan array of architectural paints, colordisplays and related products. In addi-tion to the International Paint name,

the stores signage will now feature itsnew go-forward name, Betonel-Dulux.Dulux and Devoe High PerformanceCoatings brands are prominently dis-played in the store showroom, in orderto reinforce the brands important her-itage to professional painters andmaintenance users.

The new retail store-within-a-ware-house opened for business in April2010, occupying approximately 5,000square-feet of the 25,000 square-footlocation. The location houses tintingfacilities for three distinct tinting sys-tems that support the architecturalpaint brands, and two separate indus-trial paint tinting systems that supportboth the International Paint and DevoeHigh Performance Coatings brands. These systems provide the custom colorand color matching support critical toboth architectural and industrial main-tenance markets and customers. Thesales and distribution center also hous-es a suite of more than a dozen offices, currently occupied by InternationalPaint and Decorative Paints Canadamanagers, sales and administrativesupport personnel.

The benefit of consolidating thebusinesses has become immediatelyapparent, according to the firm.International Paints relationship withlarge specification-driven customerswas very different from the decorativegroups focus on commercial paintingcontractors that require limited quan-tities of protective coatings. By decora-tive representatives working underthe mentorship of International Paintcounterparts, some of the morerespected Devoe High PerformanceCoatings products such as Cathacoat302 and Bar Rust 235 have been lever-aged into larger Quebec industrialfacilities and projects.

MESOCOAT LICENSES SURFACEENGINEERING TECHNOLOGYMesoCoat has acquired exclusivecommercial rights to the high densityinfrared surface modification technol-ogy IP Portfolio from UT-Battelle,LLC. This surface engineering tech-nology was developed over the lastdecade at the infrared processing cen-ter, part of the industrial materialsdivision of Oak Ridge NationalLaboratory (ORNL). Through technol-ogy transfer collaboration efforts andlicensing of multiple patents, Meso -Coat is commercializing this technolo-gy which enables the application ofcoatings and cladding materials atrates 1-2 orders of magnitude faster, and with better quality than alternateprocesses such as laser or weldcladding or furnace processing, according to the company. This HighDensity Infrared technology enableslarge areas to be rapidly clad withwear or corrosion resistant metal orcermet coatings. This technology hasthe potential to revolutionize the coat-ing and cladding industry because itenables metallurgical bonding ofmetal and ceramic coatings to beapplied very rapidly and at low cost tolarge, previously unreachable areasdue to the dimensional limitation ofcurrently available equipments. These areas include ship decks, build-ing supports, reactor vessels andequipments, bridges and pipes.Additional benefits include thereduced use of natural resources andpotential energy conservation, andthe elimination of reliance on environ-mentally damaging substances suchas chromate primers to protect largestructures. The European coatings market is show-ing clear signs of a recovery from therecession, according to the financialresults of the regions coatings companies forthe first half of 2010.

Nonetheless there are considerable doubtsin the sector about whether the momentumbehind the recovery will last, particularlysince the extent of the revival in demand isby no means uniform across Europe.

There is only a slow recovery in the mar-ket while the outlook is still rather uncer-tain, said Erkki Jaervinen, president andchief executive of Tikkurila, the Finnish-based coatings producer.

The most buoyant market has been Germanywhere the countrys GDP grew by 2.2 percent inthe three months to June, the fastest quarterlygrowth in 20 years. This has been mainlybecause the lower euro, particularly against theUS dollar, has boosted its exports.

The association of the German paint andprinting inks industry (VdL) had forecast inMay that output of the countrys coatingscompanies would rise by 1.4 percent this yearwhile turnover would go up by 3.6 percent.

Because of the growth in the German econo-my weve now revised those figures to a 2.7 per-cent rise in outputslightly higher than the offi-cial forecast of a 2.5 percent increase in GDPand to a 5.1 percent rise in turnover, saidMichael Bross, VdLs head of public relations.

However even German coatings companiesare worried about the possibility of a slow-down in exports because of a dip in the glob-al economy and the threat of more financialturmoil among the southern member statesof the European Union after a debt crisis inGreece earlier this year.

In many parts of Europe coatings sales tookoff in the first quarter of this year and contin-ued to surge ahead for much of the second quar-ter. But by the middle of the year there were

indications that demand was flattening out. There was a lot of restocking which acceler-

ated after a pick-up in demand stretching backto the middle of last year, said David Thomas, chemicals analyst at Oxford Economics, Oxford,England, which estimated that the WesternEuropean paints sector expanded by 10 percentin the first quarter compared with the sameperiod in 2009.

Now the rise in sales has begun to wane inthe wake of European governments endingtheir economic stimulus programs introducedafter the financial crisis of 2008 to soften theimpact of the recession. Furthermore in aneffort to reduce their debts, they have alsobegun to make sharp expenditure cuts acrosslarge parts of the public sector.

Cars sales, for example, have begun to weak-en because governments have withdrawn finan-cial incentives for drivers to trade in old cars fornew ones, said Thomas.

In Sweden a project giving tax benefits topeople renovating their homes has bolstereddemand for decorative coatings and othermaterials in the country.

The Swedish scheme has been a huge suc-cess and is one of the reasons why we areexpecting an eight percent growth in revenuethis year, said Soeren Olesen, managingdirector of Fluegger, a Danish-based producerand retailer of decorative paints, which isactive in the Swedish market. In Denmark, which doesnt have such a scheme decorativepaint sales have been growing around one totwo percent against three to five percent inSweden. Around 20 percent of professionalpainters in the Danish capital Copenhagenare out of work.

In Russia rising consumer confidence in thefirst half of the yearbefore the country was hitby drought as well as forest and peat fires whichenveloped Moscow in smoghelped stimulatethe decorative paints market as Russians spent

more on home improvements.Demand for decorative paints rose

by seven percent by volume in the firsthalf of the year after a big drop in 2009,said Jaervinen of Tikkurila for whichRussia is a large market. FurthermoreRussian consumers have been movingfrom cheaper to premium paints whichhas helped to increase our sales.

AkzoNobel, the European marketleader in decorative paints, reportedthat besides strong demand in Turkeyand Russia and moderate growth inthe UK, its other decorative markets inthe region were stable to declining.

The UK housing markets started tofalter in the second quarter after an 8.9percent rise in house prices in the firstquarter. In Spain house prices fell by 4.7percent in the first quarter amidst aslump in demand for paints and otherbuilding products.

Sales of OEM auto paints soaredearlier in the year as output of pas-senger cars went up by 34 percent inthe first three months compared witha year ago. But production was still 13percent lower than in the first quarterof 2008, according to figures fromEuropean Automobile ManufacturersAssociation (ACEA).

BASF Coatingsmost of whole salesare in the OEM sectorrecorded a 23percent rise in sales in the first half ofthe years, which was also underpinnedby a good order volume in the autorefinish segment.

However European demand for carshas begun to decrease again with a 7.4percent drop in sales in April and a 9.3

percent fall in new registrations in Mayas government support schemes werediscontinued.

In addition to a big surge in demandfor OEM paints prompted mainly byhigher car exports, the German coat-ings sector has also benefited from theincrease in exports from electricalequipment and machinery.

These three marketsOEM, electri-cal and machineryhave been the maindrivers behind increasing coatings sales, said Bross. After machinery output inGermany declined by around 40 percentlast year it has increased sharply.

AkzoNobel reported strong demandfor powder coatings, especially inEastern Europe, and also a quickrebound in the Turkish market for woodfinishes and coatings. In specialty plas-

tics coatings there were increased salesin Europe in contrast to declining vol-ume and revenue sales in Asia.

While enjoying rises in sales, mostcoatings companies in Europe havebeen complaining about increasing rawmaterial costs. VdL said that raw mate-rial prices went up by an average 10percent in the first four months of theyear with the costs of some additivesjumping by as much as 25 percent.

Raw material producers have beenclosing capacity and reducing theirstocks, said Olesen. As soon as demandpicked up there were shortages.

Even if the sales of European coat-ings companies continue to improvefor the rest of the year they face theprospect of narrower margins becauseof bigger raw material bills. CW

  • 24 SEPTEMBER 2010 WWW.COATINGS WORLD.COM

In the May 2010 Business Corner column,we commented on new value selling tech-niques including Winning on Value vs.Losing on Price-Competing Successfully in aMe-Too Marketplace. As an after thought, Ifelt that a return to the basics, upon the shoul-ders of which Value-Selling is supported, would make sense.

I believe Ive read just about every bookavailable over the past 20-plus years regard-ing methods to improve profitable sales bat-ting averages of success. At least it seemsthat I have.

Do you agree with the following statement? There is nothing more vulnerable than a

naked commodity product: naked to its cus-tomers and its competitors because it hasbeen stripped of the unique performancebenefits it once enjoyed.

A commodity is vulnerable to three inter-related business elements: Price/margin reduction; Substitution; and Losing a customer while acquiring a competitor.

Since a commodity product offering can nolonger provide itself with protective barriersof uniquely advantageous performance, itmust be able to add value to its users inother ways if it is to survive at all.

One of the most popular ways to add value isto reduce price. The customer pays less for thesame value. Therefore, the value is enhanced.A second method to add value is to maintainprice but give more in exchange for that price. For example, free services, like better termsconditions, a larger inventory float, deals anddiscounts. The customer pays the same pricebut receives a greater perceived value.

I would urge you to consider a thirdmethod of value enhancement. I would notsuggest that all so-called commodities can beconverted, but I do know that many can beconverted to higher value to both your cus-tomers as well as to your own company. WhatIm referring to is a method of wrapping thecommodity is a system.

A Commodity System is a package composedof a commodity product and one or more otherproducts and related services. It is then sold asa single unit whose price is based on the sys-tems ability to add value that the commodityproduct alone cannot offer. This value is the eco-nomic effect of solving a customers cost prob-lem by reducing the cost or solving a customersrevenue problem by increasing sales.

A commodity product that is packaged in asystem undergoes a conversion. It takes onsome of the most desirable selling attributes of

System development...where valueselling begins: Part 1

The first of a three-part series exploring the topic ofsystem selling.

branded products. For instance, it canbear a premium price that is based onthe total systems contribution to thecustomer value, NOT the commodityproducts cost. Additionally, it can besold on the basis of the systemsunique beneficial effects, NOT simplythe commodity products specifica-tions, terms and conditions. Lastly, asystem can become proprietary, enabling it to establish customer pref-erence as contrasted with mereacceptance, which is the best responsethat a commodity product can hope togenerate by itself.

SYSTEM VS. COMMODITY, THE SELLING ACT IS MUCHDIFFERENTTo sell a commodity, the seller must

know the product, its technology andits cost. These considerations are allinternal. The only elements the sell-er must know are their specifica-tions, and their purchasing practices, polices and people.

To sell systems, a seller must knowa great deal more about the cus-tomers business, especially in twokey subject areas: Where major costs cluster in cus-tomer functions and processes thatthe sellers systems can affect; and How a customers ability to sell canbe increased on the other end of thesupply chain.

A successful selling system requiresknowing how to cause a significantbeneficial effect and prove that it willoccur in a customers cost or revenue

structure as a result of the sale.Specifically, the seller must know indetail: Customers costs so that the cus-tomer profit can be increased as adirect result of reducing these costswith a system; and Customers sales potential so thatthe customer profit can be increasedas a direct result of installing thesystem.

This monologue is easy to discuss, but how does system selling work inthe real world? In the next twocolumns Chemark will provide exam-ples and details describing the tacti-cal art required to bring a commodi-ty back to acceptable profitability, provide competitive barriers andaccount stability.
