As we close out our business for 2015, I want to give you some of this year’s Chamber highlights. This year has been special in a historic perspec-tive, as 2015 marks the 100th year anniversary of our Chamber offices, the historic Barber House. With this historic reference we are reminded of our responsibilities to those who went before us and those who will follow. With this in mind, your Chamber formed the “Investing For The Next Cen-tury” campaign. Our goal was to raise $500,000 to maintain the Barber House and fund the SEEDS Business Resource Center for the next 5 years. We will meet this goal and perhaps exceed the goal.
With the SEEDS Center, we help build our community’s businesses and pro-business environment.
The Chamber and the business community have, for ten years, been discussing the need to take action to retain some of our local talent and attract new talent to our community. The establishment of an “incubator” or business accelerator has been the focus of those dis-cussions. We have engaged Georgia Tech to do a feasibility test and we expect positive feedback early next year. Our community has many business entities that are vital to our eco-nomic interests.
One of the “anchor” committees is the Governmental Affairs Com-mittee (GAC). The GAC engages our local, State and Federal officials throughout the year for business issues. This is done at face-to-face meetings with all of our elected officials here in Valdosta and when we travel to Atlanta and Washington. The Campaign Academy—our first “how to run for elected office” workshops were very successful, with 25 in each class.
The above is a short synopsis of what your Chamber has done in 2015 to Advocate for the business community, help Build our com-munity’s businesses and keep Valdosta a pro-business environment. We also help our members Connect to each other, and to potential clients and customers, and we are very focused on Promoting our members to their targeted markets, and our community to the out-side world.
I would like to give special thanks and recognition to the Chamber President, Myrna Ballard and her excellent staff for all their help and guidance this past year.

Advocacy is the primary mission of a strong chamber of commerce.
Our Chamber’s mission is: “To serve as the voice of business in our community.” The Government Affairs Council, South Georgia Military Affairs Council, and SORT committee exist to be that voice on the local, state and federal levels.
Government Affairs Council (GAC)
An important part of an advocacy effort is communication with our elected officials.
“I am really encouraged by the level of interest by our Chamber members; we broke records for attendance at both our Federal Legislative Lunch in September (230) and the State Legislative Lunch in December (220),” said 2015 GAC Chairman Bruce Allred (Smith Drug Company).
“These numbers tell me our membership understands the need to communicate face-to-face with our elected leaders to effect change. It also tells our elected leadership there is a lot of support for the issues we raise in South Georgia, and they listen,” Allred said.
“As we move into the future we must remain strong in our resolve to communicate clearly and forcefully when needed, to address the needs of not only the Chamber, but the whole of South Georgia.”
-Bruce Allred
Chamber, SGMAC and GAC leaders worked with Lowndes County Commission Chairman Bill Slaughter and County Planner Jason Davenport to protect the Moody Activity Zone as well as the property owners in that area. Pictured are Nick Lacey (SGMAC Co-Chairman, Berrien County), 2015 Chamber Chairman of the Board Ron Borders (Real Living Realty Advisors), Chairman Slaughter, and 2016 GAC Chairman Brad Folsom (Moore, Clarke, Duvall & Rodgers, P.C.).
South Georgia Military Affairs Council (SGMAC)
South Georgia Military Affairs Council exists to advocate on behalf of Moody Air Force Base. Comprised of business leaders from the four counties most impacted by Moody’s presence – Lowndes, Berrien, Lanier and Cook – SGMAC meets regularly to prepare for the next round of BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure), and to advocate for local policies that can affect Moody’s future.
“The good work Lowndes County completed with the implementation of the Moody Activity Zone (MAZ) ten years ago is hailed as an unparalleled benefit
ADVOCATE: “To speak or write in favor of; support or urge by argument; recommend publicly.”

to the Air Force when we annually meet with Air Force leadership at the Pentagon,” explained Michael Lee (Ameris Bank), 2015 co-chairman of the South Georgia Military Affairs Council.
“We must defend the MAZ against any effort to weaken its protections, perhaps now more than ever before.”
-Michael Lee
“With plans being made to retire the A-10, a new mission for Moody is on the horizon. To limit the MAZ in any way is to potentially limit new missions coming to Moody. It’s just not prudent to gamble with the $458 million dollar annual economic impact and the future of all that Moody brings to our community,” Lee added.
SGMAC welcomed Congressman Austin Scott to Valdosta to discuss current and future missions at Moody AFB. Pictured are Michael Lee, Lowndes Co-Chairman (Ameris Bank); Gloria Mitchell, Cook Co-Chairman; Cindy Pullen, Lanier Co-Chairman and Nick Lacey, Berrien Co-Chairman.
“It is imperative that we remain vigilant to protect Moody from community based factors which do not support the long term health of the base,” said Brad Folsom (Moore, Clarke, DuVall & Rodgers), 2016 Chairman of the Chamber’s Government Affairs Council. “We have to be mindful that changes we make now to our MAZ protections could
negatively affect future missions of the base and thereby harm the economic health of our community. The small sacrifice we make in terms of restrictive zoning continues to pay large dividends in the health of Moody.”
Recent amendments to the MAZ by the Lowndes County Commission have served to strengthen the MAZ, helping ensure that development encroachment is not a negative factor when the next BRAC takes place. “Moody AFB is extremely important to our community and we have a responsibility to protect it from encroachment,” said Lowndes County Commission Chairman Bill Slaughter. “We also must strive to find a balance between Moody’s needs and the needs of the citizens that live in the MAZ. I believe with input from the Chamber and the South Georgia Military Affairs Council, along with the efforts of Lowndes County Planner Jason Davenport we have found that balance. The amendments will strengthen the MAZ to protect it from encroachment, and at the same time they will allow homeowners the ability to improve or replace their homes without going through additional regulations and processes,“ Slaughter added.
SORT (Special Ombudsman Response Team)
SORT is a Chamber committee which acts as a liaison between the development community and local governments. “SORT has been a good partner with the City, helping in a constructive way, helping the City see things from the business owner’s perspective,” said Tim Carroll (Farmers Home Furniture), Valdosta City Council District 5.
“In 2015 SORT identified specific regulations that weren’t working for developers, and the City staff listened,” Carroll added.
“We’re all on the same team. We all want to work together to make our community the most business-friendly in Georgia.”

Valdosta City elected officials and staff met in November with the Chamber’s SORT committee to discuss suggested changes to the City’s business development processes.
Chamber members also are encouraged to participate in the 2016 Members To Be Heard sessions, where members have the opportunity to share with the GAC any legislative concerns that affect the business community.

Risky BusinessBy Paul Blough, CEO, Blough Tech
Don’t put your business at risk by ignoring elec-tronic records privacy laws. The consequences of violating priva-cy laws are staggering. There are pri-vacy laws governing everything from the boutique downtown that accepts credit cards to the banking corpora-tions. If you violate PCI, which is a standard required for anyone who receives payments by credit cards, you may very well lose the ability to accept credit card payments. That’s a fatal blow to the operations of most businesses. If you violate HIPAA, the law that protects the confidential-ity of patient records, you could face fines as high as 1.5 million dollars and even jail time. That’s pretty scary
and what’s even scarier is that many people violate these laws and regu-lations without even knowing it. In fact, as many as 81% of these viola-tions go undetected.
Privacy laws and regulations cover protected information in all forms, including electronic data. This is where most people get in to trouble. Electronic records are much more slippery than physical ones. In fact, you can store thousands of electronic records on a portable thumb drive
and lose them all because you had a hole in your pocket. They can be on your phone or on your laptop and those can be stolen, putting all of those records in the hands of a thief. You could even have a hacker break into your computer and steal the data you thought was safe and secure on your hard drive. It’s a grim picture. You can significantly reduce your risk of a data breech by follow-ing some very simple advice.
1 Know the laws and regula tions that govern your busi-
ness. HIPAA, PCI, GLBA, CAN-SPAM and a whole bunch of other initials may apply to you. You have to know which ones apply, what measures of security they require, and what con-sequences you could face for non-compliance.
2 Educate your team on security awareness. The most
important part of electronic security is the human firewall. Breaches hap-pen because people make mistakes, and people make mistakes when they have not been trained. Teach your team that security matters and remind them often!
3 Take advantage of automat ed security tools to help keep
your data safe. At a minimum you need a strong firewall, professional antivirus software and patch man-agement for all of your software.
Stop ignoring electronic security and putting yourself and your business at risk. Ignoring these laws is not an op-tion! Choose to make security a part of your culture!

Enay Coaching: Cultivating Legacy-Minded Servant-Leaders
“Our greatest accomplishment has been building strong partnerships with like-minded leaders...”
After completing his service in the Air Force as an intel-ligence officer, Elton Dixon
wanted to use his leadership and teamwork experience to help students develop essential skills to become highly qualified and productive employees.
Dixon, and his wife, Adrienne, started Enay Coaching to provide business training and educa-tion to schools, businesses, and organizations to elevate team-work-minded, purpose-focused engagement among the current and future workforce.
Enay’s curriculum was developed to supplement CTAE (Career, Technical & Agricultural Edu-cation) instruction for middle and high school programs. The modules include leadership and teamwork, communications, criti-cal thinking and problem solv-ing, financial literacy, and youth entrepreneurship.
“Without a program like ours, schools risk raising a generation of professionals, government leaders, engineers, and home-makers who excel in technical skills, but will sabotage them-selves and future generations because of a lack of training in certain leadership and teamwork attributes,” said Dixon. “People who lack training in these at-tributes risk falling into the trap of short-sighted ambition and being entangled in a quest for immediate gratification. This di-saster is avoidable with the right coaching.”
Officially launched in October 2014, Enay Coaching delivers highly interactive programs focused on financial life skills, entrepreneurship, and character education to students in middle and high school and college.
“Technical training alone is not enough to solve 21st-century challenges,” said Dixon, who won the 2015 Southwest Georgia Bank Business Plan Competition. “Students also need to know how to use their training with a team-focused, servant-leader mindset.”
Enay Coaching’s services include tutoring through a traditional one-on-one application and on-line services for youth and adult learners throughout the U.S. Enay also provides tutoring services to local school districts to provide supplemental assistance for aca-demically struggling students.
Enay Coaching also conducts professional development semi-nars for educators that are fo-cused on classroom innovation, leadership training, and guid-ance in creating a communica-tion culture in schools.
Dixon says winning the South-west Georgia Bank Business Plan Competition has allowed Enay Coaching to further market and demonstrate its services to the local education and business community.
“Through the competition, we have also been able to articu-late our business goals to highly experienced leaders who helped
advise our growth along the way,” said Dixon. “It is great to launch a business through a competi-tion like this because from day one talking with new clients, you have already been vetted by experienced business people, which gives others additional confidence in your business.”
Enay Coaching has established partnerships with multiple school districts, Valdosta State University’s Student Success Cen-ter and STEM Center, and Wire-grass Georgia Technical College.

For more than 32 years, Ashley’s Business Solutions has been providing business machines and ser-
vice to more than 7,000 customers. With regional centers located in Valdosta, Tifton, Albany, and
Savannah the Ashley’s Business Solutions team is focused on helping small and large businesses cre-
ate, manage and distribute digital and paper-based documents.
Ashley’s Business Solutions provides the latest technology from industry leaders including Canon, Samsung, HP, Lexmark and Neopost.
“We are the largest independent office equipment dealer in South Georgia,” said Vice President of Sales Bob Pearce. “We are also the 31st largest Canon dealer in the U.S. Our customers trust us to provide not only the products but the service and full support after the sale.”
According to Pearce, business machines have become more customized in the past decade.
“These machines don’t just copy, print, scan, and fax,” Pearce said. “Machines today can be equipped with applica-tions that allow our customers to create custom workflows with enhanced “intelligent” scanning that can automati-cally read data from the document, name the document and route it to specific destinations.”
Valdosta Sales Executives Jeremy Chick and Bert Ponder are actively involved in the community and dedicated to as-sessing the business workflow needs of their customers.
“I make it a priority to meet with my customers and learn their workflow needs and concerns to design a customized solution,” said Ponder. “Each business has a different mission that needs to be accomplished.” I work closely with each

client to determine the easiest and simplest way
of producing, moving and archiving documents.”
Chick says that throughout the sales process he and Ponder work to make it as smooth and seamless as possible.
“By asking the right questions and truly knowing and understanding the customer’s work-flow, I can tailor a solution around their business,” said Chick, “rather than them tailoring their business
around a solution.”
Chick, who has been with Ashley’s Business Solutions for four years, said that customization is extremely important in providing clients with the correct products to meet their needs.
“Tailoring a solution around a business is key,” said Chick, who is a member of Valdosta Rotary and is serving on the Leadership Lowndes Board of Trustees. “It gives me the ability to streamline their workflow without making
many changes. Our industry leading hardware and software, coupled with our world-class service department and IT staff, allows us to implement these solutions for any customer at the local level.”
Ponder, who has been with Ashley’s Business Solutions for seven years, agrees that individual customization of business solutions is an important part of customer satisfaction.
“Producing documents and moving them electronically, this is a vital piece of office equipment in today’s business envi-ronment, making sure my clients have the best equipment for their needs is essential,” Ponder said. “The right machine fit helps my clients realize their growth potential by saving precious time and money. When I help customers succeed in saving time and money that is when I enjoy my job the most. I especially gain fulfillment from my customer’s excitement when the new equipment is being delivered.”
Ponder, who is a member of Valdosta Kiwanis, said finding business solutions that are the best fit for his customers is im-portant.
“I personally bring a willingness to help each of my customers and I truly care if they are satisfied,” Ponder said. “I possess a desire to set positive goals, and I strive every day to have a helpful and grateful attitude.”
Pearce emphasizes that Ashley’s Business Solutions is selling a service and not just a product.
“We customize the customer’s workflow and design the solutions to meet their individual needs,” said Pearce. “We also have a highly skilled network of technicians that live and work within the major markets we service.”
Ashley Business Solutions employees more than 30 highly-skilled and specialized technicians and keep more than $1 million worth of in-stock parts and supplies to service customers as quickly and ef-ficiently as possible, minimizing downtime.
“Our technicians live in the communities they service,” said Pearce. “It is our company’s mission to offer customers the very best in tech-nology and service.”

The Diamond Gala was a magical evening at the Barber House. The Chamber and honored guests celebrated the hundredth birthday of the Valdosta landmark in style on October 15. The historic house came alive with music provided by the Valdo-sta Symphony Orchestra and melodic conversations among guests. Lobster Newberg and potato croquets were the stars of the candlelight buffet generously sponsored by Covington’s Dining and Catering.
Carla Penny (Classic Art & Frame), Chairman of the Barber Trust Advisory Board served as hostess for the event and led the Gala Committee along with Thressea Boyd (THBoyd Commu-nications), Gala Committee Coordinator, in orchestrating the evening’s festivities.
“The Barber House is a beautiful house that deserves contin-ued preservation,” said Penny. “It embodies southern grace and charm.”
The Barber House was built by E.R. Barber in 1915. Barber was a local entrepreneur and inventor, who owned the second Coca-Cola bottling plant in the world.
Upon Mr. Barber’s death in 1965, he bequeathed the house to his daughter, Ola Barber Pittman. Shortly after Mrs. Pittman acquired the house, the home was threatened by the General Services Administration who thought the home would make a beautiful parking lot for the new Federal Building on Patterson
Street. Rumor has it that Mrs. Pittman made a phone call to Lyndon B. Johnson himself to state her case. She was reward-ed for her efforts; the house was not demolished.
In Mrs. Pittman’s will she bequeathed the Barber House to the “citizens of Valdosta.” She left detailed instructions saying that the home could not become the property of the government and that the house could not be sold. She considered the house to be a safe haven and a place of security; the house possessed all of her fondest memories. It was this heritage that she wished to pass on to the citizens of Valdosta.
It took two years for the Barber Trustees to figure out what to do with Mrs. Pittman’s gift. In March of 1979, the Southwest Georgia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, led by Richard Hill (Richard Hill & Associates) became interested in the house as a renovation project. The Chamber was one of the interested groups that met with the architects.
The renovations on the house took nearly two years, and the project turned into a community effort, with many community members offering their services for little or no charge. Fol-lowing the renovation, the Barber House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Chamber of Commerce has been operating from the beautifully restored location since 1981.

A recent study by Media Dynamics showed the average adult is exposed to an estimated 360 images a day from five primary media sources (TV, radio, Internet, newspaper, and magazines); and of those images, only 150-155 are noted, with even fewer creating a strong impact or impression.
How do you get your product or service to become one of the 150-155 noted images, or even better, one that leaves a lasting impression?
When we work with our clients we look at all the steps necessary to create an effective marketing plan.
At Fusion we use a four-phase marketing approach. We help our clients clarify their business strategies and work toward furthering those strategies.
The phases include: a review of the company’s sales objectives and market segments; for an existing company an examination of the current brand assets (logos, taglines, brand graphics, etc.) and how they are being used; develop new or revised brand assets; and execute the marketing plan.
One of the more interesting things we consider when building a brand is the behavioral science behind why a person makes a purchase or uses a service. It is helpful to understand the human mind. When we study the way the brain works, it reveals that we are both rational and emotional beings.
Building a brand that deals directly to a consumer’s
emotions and desires is often referred to as “emotional branding.”
If we can become aware of how to influence our customers on an emotional level, we can craft our advertising to speak to their natural inclinations. There are six primal triggers that speak to our deepest unconscious biological drives: survival, safety, security, sustenance, sex, and status.
One of the most enduring and successful ad campaigns is the Michelin tire advertisement that features a baby sitting in a tire with the tagline, “Because so much is riding on your tires.”
This is an effective campaign because it involves safety, security, and sex. Sex or, more accurately, reproduction is represented by the baby, which appeals to one of our strongest needs or desires, protecting the innocent, while the feelings of security and safety are represented by the baby sitting in the tire.
Another example is the emotional triggers for the Range Rover brand-status (a luxury vehicle), safety and security, (a vehicle with a rugged reputation), and sex (if I drive a Range Rover,
surely I will more attractive).
The desire for sustenance has been used in food campaigns such as Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef?” and the California Milk Processor Board’s “Got Milk?”
When you stack primal triggers in your advertising, you amplify the effect of your advertising message.
Emotional branding is an essential tool to make your advertising campaign memorable.
