^‘THE COIN MACHINE MERRY GO-ROUND”

BY BILL GERSHFACTORY MJSICFor the past few issues we’ve done a bit of harping on factory mu-sic. We have not only reported the original article on factorymusic as it appeared in Forbes’ magazine, in the press of the coun-try and later in Reader’s Digest, but, we also gave you the storyof the ’’Inquiring Fotographer” (Jimmy Jemail of the N. Y, News) andthe fact that each and every one of the executives he approached onthis subject were very much in favor of r.usic for workers. The

effect of music on workers has been extremely good. More and more war plants and fac-tories are now installing emy type of music they can obtain. There is no reason whyyou can't remove the coin chute from one of your old phonos and install it on a darngood rental basis in the factories in your town, helping your music operation generallyand certainly proving your machines essential to the war effort. This past week Prof,Harold Burris-Meyer, Director of Research in Sound at Stevens Institute of Technology, reported on investigations made in a number of factories and war plants in the East todetermine whether music played in factories influences the production rate and howmuch. He learned that production gains from 1,3^ to 11.1^ and that rate of work is

generally increased. Prof, Burris-Meyers also envisions a special type of music devel-oping which will be of groat benefit to composers as well as industry.

N, Y, GAS-LIQ,-CIG TAXESGasoline sales 'in N, Y, State in Aug. reflected the full effect of gas rationing. Tax-able motor fuel sales dropped 39^ compared to the same period in ’41, (Monetary lossto the state ^^39,000,000. ) Liquor sales sluinpod in both Aug, & Sept, State collectionsdovm $960,675. Ciggies romained stable. Receipts totaled $2,196,057, Gain of $73,276.over the same month (Sept.) in '41. With states losing revenue at such alarming ratewe wonder whether they v/ill once again turn their peepers on coingames for additionalrevonue?

yTOR TRANSPORTiKis past week' you probably read of all the compliments being paid America’s motortransport because of the marvelous fashion in v/hich they have so efficiently handledtheir business and also because they are keeping rolling regardless of war conditions(gas rationing, lack of tires and new trucks). Trucks are extremely important to coin-men, They have proven best and most economical method of transportation. The factthat Washington's big-v/igs are so pleased over motor transport means that trucks willgo on carrying freight for the nation and that means a continued method of shipmentfor this industry without necessity of crating larger equipment (soft wood crating nowprohibited). In case you didn’t know; there are about 4,890,000 non-military trucksrolling on U, S. highways right now. About 54,000 communities in U, S, are entirelydependent on tmeks for their supplies.

COIN TAXESNo ono as yet has completo lowdown on coin taxes (in bill just signed by F.D.R,) andthis is our closing time (Fri,0ct,23) but from latest reports which have leaked out,

all amusement (?) machines will pay $10, per year. We all know that it's almost im-

possible to define what is meant by an ’’amusoment machine". By just stating that it

is an amusement machine because it does not automatically pay off, isn’t so. Yet, if

this is the viev/point of the new tax law then ops will have to confine themselves to

this viewpoint. Very fov; territories are supposed to make payoffs anyway. Wo all

loiow that. Therefore, most equipment is instantly thrown into "amusemont" classifica-

tion, Slots paying $100. per year aren't in the least hurt. Nor are the diggers for

territory is so small for those. Yet, if diggers can operate with silver coins, then

$100, per year tax is picayune. Counter games, check payout type, will also come with-

in $100, ruling. Other counter games, according to new rule, should therefore come

into $10, amusoment class. The definition of what is a "gambling device" and what is

an "amusement machine" has always '':een the biggest bone of contention betv/oen the mem-

bers of this industry and officials. The best that can be said at this time is to

av/ait clarifications.

C.P.L.The "Confidential Price Lists" (C.P.L.) are the finest barometer of market conditions

that this industry has ever had. Use these at every opportunity. Note these past few

weeks how games have been fluctuating in price like men stumbling around in the dark,

Tho the prices of most games have gone up (tremendously in some cases) a lot of small

coinmen come along every so often to crack the market. lAich of this is due to fright.

“THE COIN MACHINE MERRY GO-ROUND”

A lot is due to the fact that machines are now being pulled in from outlying spots be-cause of approach of gas rationing (as happened in the East) and being spilled on themarket for any price to raise cash, (These men, like the Easterners, will be plentysorry they gave their machines away. Most of the Eastern coinmen v/ould pay the sameprice they sold at to get them back now, ) What we started out to say was - keep youreyes peeled onto the Confidential Price Lists, The field is changing rapidly. Gamesare coming and going. Know what’s happening in this feverish business.

SCOOPi^st J^iday, as we started to press, we added a confidential tip onto one article wehad written regarding the Petrillo controversy. This was the fact that v-frs of recordswould settle with Petrillo if they had to even tho this would be an extremely bitterpill for them to swallow. On Saturday, the v;ell known columnist of the N, Y, Post,Leonard Lyons, in his column "The Lyon’s Den", reported, "A compromise being effectedwith Petrillo may permit stations to use recordings for broadcasts before 6 P, M* oncondition that musicians be used for the evening programs. And juke boxes will be per-mitted to operate in licensed places too small to use orchestras." This weeks storycracks press that certain broadcast chains (who won’t allow names to be mentioned) areout to compromise with Petrillo so that they will not have to go thru an expensivecourt battle and involve themselves in labor dispute in time of v/ar. They point outthat A, F, of L, is v/ith Petrillo as noted at its convention in Toronto. Thursdaymorning the big chains, N.B.C, and C,B.S, (v/ith M.B.S, still not talking too much)claim that they are going to fight. But, where do phonops head in with all this? Sim-ply tho scoop we made (and we repeat it again even tho it’s off-the-record statement)that the record mfrs v/ill settle with Petrillo if necessary - only after every otheropportunity is gone - and even then it v/ill be a very, very bitter pill for them toswallow, (But, we do not imagine that this v/ill stop Dept, of Justice from goingahead with its case where Petrillo is concerned.)

PERMIT Y/APNING

Some issues back v/e told you about ODT (Office of Defense Transportation) requiringthat every commercial vehicle have "certificate of war necessity" by November 15th,

Without a certificate it will be impossible to obtain gas, tires or parts. Carriershave received application blanks and have filled them out. If you have commercialvehicles go over to ODT Motor Transport Division at once and get Form to fill out.

All trucks, buses, taxicabs and other commercial vehicles must carry certificates ofv/ar necessity by Nov, 15th. (Don’t worry - you’ll get one - proving that your vehiclesare necessity to you to continue your business.)

SyT NOSTA.LGIA

If you h!aven’t read the Henry McLemore column "In The Reviewing Stand" (which appearedin Hearst papers thruout the coimtry) v;e saw it in the N.Y. JoTimal-American (Wed,,

Oct, El) entitled "The Slot Machines Disappear, Oh Myl" then get the paper somewhereand read it. You’ll get a kick out of this entire column devoted to I.4r, McLemore’

s

rambling thoughts after he sav/ trucks hauling slots away to be broken up. In oneparagraph he writes, "I know slot machines are cruel and vicious and imfair and wouldpick a pocket if given half a chance and there is no record of one helping an old ladyacross the street. Still I hate to sco them disappear and here’s the reason why: I

want revenge, lHy bones acho for a chance to get back at those sullen iron boxes withbells, cherries, lemons, plums and oranges," Further on he writes, "For five years I

v/asted my money and time on unsuccessful 'systems’ of beating the machines. Some of

my ’systems* are undoubtedly familiar to you. One that cost me goodness knows how

mch in nickels and dimes v/as based on tho theory that the smart time, tho right time

to play the machines was after someone else had put a lot of money into them without

getting a payoff, I used to stalk the machines and players like a hungry panther.

The minute a player who had put in lots of change without gotting so much as two

cherries, quit, I would pounce. There is no good ’system' . Tho lemons on a slot

machine are inexhaustible," Later on ho states, "Those good old sucker days are gone

forever. I’ll remember them however. Sure, I know they wore bad and that the slot

machine made a fool out of mo and a lot of other people, but did you ever stop to re-

member that the things we remember most clearly, the moments in our lives that are

dearest to us, are the things and tho moments when we took a chance, made a fool of

ourselves or generally acted unlike a sound, solid, sterling specimen of the human

race? How many people are loved for their virtues?" And ho still goes on and winds

up with a bang. It’s a honey - got it.

“INFORMATION CENTER ”

One of the greatest tributes being paid The Cash Box these days is the mannerin which subscribers from all over the country write, wire and phone asking

for information regarding every sort of coin machine as well as a lot of things

entirely out of the coin machines field.

Here's an example of inquiries received during one day last week. FromBirmingham. Ala., “Where can I get 10c pacics of phono needles at

wholesale?" From New York, “Who has some .22 cal. shorts for sale?"

From Baltimore, Md.. “Who has some records to sell? And please phoneCapitol Records and have them send us samples." From Charleston, W. Va..

“Who has an A.B.T. Rifle Range for sale?" From Denver, Col., "I only wontto buy scales." From Long Island, “I just picked up a legal game — canyou tell me its market value?" From Brooklyn, “Who has some 30-wire

cable?" From San Francisco, “Am enclosing check for $500. as deposit onmerchandise purchased from a New York advertiser. If reliable and youknow him turn check over to him."

And so it goes — all day long. Requests to do something, inquiries aboutsomething or other — from all around the country. Everyone asking TheCash Box for something else. We've even had some of our more sporting

subscribers phone and wire us to ask, “Hey, can you get me two tickets for

the fights at the Garden this Friday night?" (V/e got 'em.) Another phoned,“How about a couple of seats at the World's Series?" (We satisfied him.)

And still another wired. “Please reserve room for me. Will be down early

Saturday morning. Wouldn't mind a cute blonde being there, too."

In short, as one noted coinman from Texas remarked (who was sitting in

our office, visiting with us, and listening to our onsv/ers to questions) “Heck,Bill, this is really the ‘information center' of the coin machine business."

So, if you haven't as yet taken advantage of the "information center" hereat The Cash Box offices, do so at anytime you need some information, it's

free. (But, Holy Smokes, stop asking for “that cute blonde's phone number".That's not yet legally recognized as a coin machine. And, what's more, wemay fool you, by ringing in a brimette.)
