“ Our sales have nearly doubled.” Carlos Melo, MCC

LEADERSHIP & EXECUTIVE SUPPORT

Page 4: CME Programs and Services Brochure

Our leadership coaching helped MCC’s CEO grow his business.

M. & C. Commodities Inc. (MCC) is a commodities processing facility based in rural Manitoba, with a primary focus on soybeans. They also use unique and proprietary technologies to develop natural, high-quality oils that are among the purest in the industry. MCC represents several Manitoba producers and serves top clients across Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

President and CEO, Carlos Melo, was looking for support and guidance on increasing sales when he became a CME Manitoba member in 2014. Though he joined with relatively moderate expectations, Melo was shocked by the strategic insight and in-depth recommendations he immediately received.

“I thought I had one or two problems to resolve – it became evident to me that there were areas in need of improvement in almost everything I was doing,” said Melo. “I was so impressed with the offer [of further help] and the attention to my business.”

Initially, Melo worked primarily with our sales champion, who looked closely at all aspects of MCC, assessed Melo’s strategies and ideas and provided suggestions on how to better lead and grow the business. We set the company on a

significant growth path by helping Melo focus on his sales channels and product mix and complete valuable market research.

“In business you need people who understand you, who come from the same industry and actually talk the same talk that we do in the manufacturing world,” says Melo. “I do not think I would have done it on my own, and for sure, not in such a short period.”

He emphasizes one-on-one coaching and support as the most valuable benefit to his CME Manitoba membership.

Through membership, Melo has connected with other manufacturing professionals, which provides an opportunity to discuss ideas and challenges with and benefit from the advice and experience of, a network of industry peers.

Since becoming a member, MCC’s sales have nearly doubled and their team is communicating and performing better than ever before. Together, Melo and the CME Manitoba team are currently working on creating industry-leading certification to set MCC apart from other processing facilities – a plan which will increase MCC’s business by another 50 per cent.

“ CME Manitoba helped make our operation more efficient.”

Audra Penner, ImagineAbility

LEAN & PRODUCTIVITY

Page 6: CME Programs and Services Brochure

We helped Audra do more with her resources.

ImagineAbility is a Winnipeg-based organization that provides meaningful employment and recreational activities for adults with intellectual disabilities. They now support over 225 people and offer a range of manufacturing solutions for customers – from packaging and kitting, to assembly and fulfillment.

Like many other social service agencies, ImagineAbility is underfunded and had to find new ways to do more with fewer resources, and that’s where we were able to help. Audra Penner, President and CEO, began her LEAN journey when she joined our Manitoba Consortium for Sustainable Improvement.

“Employing the LEAN principles helped cut down the amount of time that frontline staff spent working on the product itself and allowed them to focus on the individuals,” says Penner. “It’s been very effective. People feel engaged and empowered.”

Since adopting LEAN, Penner has been able to reduce waste and allow employees to devote more time to the people they support. Not only did LEAN help her identify and resolve existing

problems, it provided efficient and cost-effective ways of operating that benefit everyone in the organization. Beyond efficiency, Penner also learned how to capitalize on team strengths to maximize each employee’s performance.

The ImagineAbility staff has benefited from visual management, 5S, value stream mapping, and many other LEAN tools. As part of the consortium, they are able to meet other members of the manufacturing community, share past challenges and discuss how problems were resolved using LEAN techniques. The opportunity to network and gain exposure was another plus for the organization.

“We truly believe that LEAN concepts can be applied to all aspects of an organization, whether it be manufacturing or service-driven,” says Penner. “It’s been a great journey for us.”

With a wealth of knowledge under her belt, Penner now has the tools and strategy needed to lead ImagineAbility on a journey of continuous improvement.

FOCUS ON: LEAN & PRODUCTIVITY

The core purpose of LEAN is to increase productivity and minimize waste within an organization. The program provides tools to identify and resolve issues, optimize technologies and assets, and improve the flow of products and services. We recommend LEAN to company owners, executives and other senior leaders who want to improve efficiency, while empowering their employees to problem solve and strive for organizational excellence.

Services include:

“ We found a way to take our technology to the world”

Martin Petrak, Orthopaedic Innovation Centre

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING & INNOVATION

Page 8: CME Programs and Services Brochure

We connected OIC with technology and innovation resources.

Orthopaedic Innovation Centre (OIC) designs and tests medical devices, with a specific focus on knee and hip replacements. Their team is made up of surgeons, scientists, technologists and engineers who offer a unique combination of testing capabilities and expertise in the medical device industry.

In 2012, OIC created a patella (kneecap) for a dog named Oreo. Now, OIC has taken a giant leap forward by creating a prototype device intended for human medical applications. To manufacture these devices, the not-for-profit OIC has established its first for-profit spinoff company, Precision ADM Inc.

Precision ADM recently moved to a new 18,000 square foot facility, and now offers advanced digital manufacturing solutions to firms across North America and abroad. A first in Canada, the facility allows engineering and design services alongside highly specialized manufacturing solutions, allowing the company to deliver a higher quality service more efficiently.

“In Manitoba, we finally have a capability in metal additive manufacturing which we didn’t have before,” Petrak says, “Now, it’s a matter of taking that capability to the world.”

As a CME Manitoba member, OIC has worked closely with our Advanced Manufacturing champion, who provides expertise in areas like strategic business planning, and has connected OIC with leaders in manufacturing and related fields.

We have collaborated with OIC to extend awareness of additive manufacturing through Canada Makes, a branch of CME Manitoba that promotes additive manufacturing in Canada, and has helped Precision ADM reach international markets. Petrak recently returned from a Canada Makes trade mission to Germany, where he toured multiple additive manufacturing companies, services centers and clients.

Precision ADM will continue to innovate in Manitoba, with plans for future growth in additive manufacturing and advanced manufacturing technologies. CME will continue to provide support to both OIC and Precision ADM, enabling connections in Canada and around the world.

“ We wouldn’t be as far along on our journey without CME Manitoba.”

Lisa Ballentyne, All-Fab Building Components

HUMAN RESOURCES & SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Page 10: CME Programs and Services Brochure

We helped All-Fab win customers and improve their Human Resources processes.

Since 1970, All-Fab Building Components has been dedicated to providing premium structural building components to residential, commercial and agricultural markets. An innovator in the construction industry, All-Fab’s high-performance teams provide building professionals with reliable solutions for their projects.

With six locations and over 300 full-time staff, All-Fab has been a member of CME Manitoba since 2006. After becoming more actively involved in our many consortia groups in 2009, Lisa Ballentyne, Human Resources Manager, has become a valuable contributor to the HR Special Interest Group (SIG) in particular. These facilitated groups, led by industry experts, help a network of non-competing business peers find real solutions to issues together, leveraging one another’s success stories and lessons learned.

In addition to these benefits, Ballentyne was also attracted to CME Manitoba’s work in support of skills development.

Since joining, Ballentyne has seen direct improvements at All-Fab. “I benefited both personally and professionally,” she says. “I was able to connect with many people within our industry, develop new relationships, and understand things more from an operational perspective rather than specifically an HR perspective.”

In addition to HR functional improvements and access to job fairs, All-Fab has benefited from networking opportunities, lobbying at the provincial and federal level and expert guest speakers for SIG meetings. They’ve gained valuable insight into how to retain business and attract customers. Ballentyne was made aware of key technology advances through seminars and special interest groups and accessed industry-leading Continuous Improvement and LEAN trainers and information.

All-Fab considers their CME Manitoba membership to be a valuable return on investment, and that having access to CME resources and support assists them in maintaining an industry leadership position.

“ We made valuable connections in our U.S. export market”

Kirby Gompf, Specialloy Industries

TRADE & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Page 12: CME Programs and Services Brochure

We helped Specialloy accelerate growth in the U.S.

Specialloy Industries has been a premier fabricator of stainless steel, aluminium, brass and copper since their founding in 1971. They manufacture architectural finishing and industrial products for commercial buildings, including stainless steel railings, wall protection, kitchen equipment and custom metal fabrication.

Kirby Gompf, Director, says Specialloy joined CME Manitoba in 2013 to get involved in the manufacturing community, learn best practices and network with other manufacturing professionals. The company now participates as a member of the Export Executive Council (EEC), a resource that has been integral to their growth in the local market and expansion into the U.S. market.

“The EEC helped us structure our sales and business model,” Gompf says. “Our EEC group meets monthly to review progress, share growth ideas, and course correct as the strategy unfolds. This feedback has been invaluable in helping us diversify our market segments and focus our efforts.” Through EEC, Gompf has had access

to company executives and toured several successful local manufacturers’ operations. Specialloy has been introduced to trade commissioners who have made connections for the company in their U.S. export market.

“The resources CME Manitoba has introduced us to have helped accelerate many growth activities,” Gompf confirms. “We would be three to five years behind where we are without access to their help, and introductions to key people.”

The team at Specialloy has also benefited from resources available for employee health and safety, and human resources and has seen additional benefits from attending the LEAN and Dare to Compete conferences.

“The workshops and speakers at these conferences always provide at least one take- away that benefits the business,” says Gompf.

Gompf plans to continue working with us on executive leadership and business growth, to take Specialloy even further.

“ CME Manitoba helped us navigate import barriers”

Ernest Rempel, Vidir Manufacturing Group

ADVOCACY & INTELLIGENCE

Page 14: CME Programs and Services Brochure

Our advocacy helped Vidir reach international markets.

Vidir is a leading manufacturer and supplier of automated storage and retrieval systems. Their equipment is used to help companies better store and manage large volumes of inventory, such as pallets of sheet metal, industrial parts, carpet, and even hospital beds.

With rising real estate costs and an increasing demand for operational optimization, companies around the world have turned to Vidir for a solution. Like many other SME manufacturers, Vidir found themselves struggling to enter markets overseas due to import restrictions and national protectionist legislation.

“When you have the chance to grow into different markets, and you dedicate your engineering and manufacturing to developing solutions for those markets, the last thing you need is to find obstacles that prevent you from expanding into those countries due to legislation or certification,” says Operations Manager Ernest Rempel.

As a CME Manitoba member, Rempel looked to us for assistance. Our broad network of experts and global contacts was able to advocate on behalf of Vidir to get certain barriers lifted or re-assessed. In some cases, we were able to determine that procurement regulations did not apply to Vidir’s specific bidding process, and this meant that the company was able to cut through the red tape and move forward with business as usual in these new markets.

“In another instance, we were pursuing a specific project in Europe and didn’t know that different countries would require different levels of certification and compliance,” said Rempel. Our advocacy and support enabled Vidir to navigate the unfamiliar environment and complete the necessary steps to market entry.

After working through several challenges, Rempel is now fully equipped to navigate the certification process. He is currently focused on positioning Vidir to access the European market and build on the Canada-CETA trade agreement.

“ We get to share our passion and spread the excitement.”

Susan Sullivan, Conviron

FUTURE WORKFORCE

Page 16: CME Programs and Services Brochure

We brought Conviron together with the future workforce.

Conviron is recognized as a world leader in the design, manufacture, and installation of controlled environment systems for plant science and agricultural biotechnology research. From small reach-in chambers to full-scale growth houses and custom solutions, Conviron systems can be found in over 90 countries, in everything from small start-up facilities to many of the world’s largest and most prestigious research institutions.

Conviron has been an involved CME Manitoba member since 1973 and was the 2012 Export Award recipient. Steve Kroft, owner and CEO, has also served on CME Manitoba’s Board of Directors, and is a vocal advocate for the work that we do. Susan Sullivan, HR Generalist at Conviron, is a member of the HR SIG and proud supporter of CME’s youth programs.

Almost 60 per cent of CME member companies identified attracting or retaining skilled labour as a top challenge, highlighting the need to develop the future workforce, today. After years of benefiting from CME Manitoba membership, Conviron recently began hosting student tours and information sessions through our Youth in Manufacturing program.

“Most students are not aware of what working in a manufacturing environment can really look like, and may have a preconceived notion that is negative,” said Sullivan. “There are many opportunities to learn different skills within the manufacturing environment and to have an impact in different ways.”

The program introduces students to different manufacturing companies in Winnipeg and helps them gain insight into the variety of roles within the manufacturing industry. Sullivan enjoys meeting students and teachers, and embraces the opportunity for Conviron’s staff to share their passion for manufacturing careers and hopefully spread that excitement to Manitoba’s young people. And Sullivan points out that it’s not just the students who learn something new during these tours.

“It’s interesting to hear the questions asked and some of the questions have led me to see the company or the products in a different way. Every time we host a student tour and presentation, I learn something new,” says Lee Klimpke, Account Manager and 2014 University of Manitoba Biotechnology grad.

“ CME Manitoba helped make our workplace safer”

Roy Cook, Monarch Industries

SAFETY

Page 18: CME Programs and Services Brochure

Made Safe helped Monarch Industries protect employees.

In partnership with Safe Work, Made Safe is a CME Manitoba initiative that provides health and safety services to meet the needs of the manufacturing work environment. Building on the success of its predecessor, AMC Safety, the program supports all sectors of the manufacturing industry and makes it easier for employers to ensure workplaces are safe and productive.

Monarch Industries has been a CME Manitoba member since 1941 and was one of the earliest adopters of Made Safe. Headquartered in Winnipeg, Monarch is a privately owned manufacturer of hydraulic cylinders and custom iron castings, with more than 400 employees across North America.

Monarch is well respected in the industry for their professionalism and dedication to workplace safety. President and CEO, Roy Cook, says he and his management team remain focused on continually improving the overall safety of their operations.

“We firmly believe that it is our responsibility to our employees and their families that we collectively do all that should be done to eliminate the risk of injury in our operations,” says Cook.

Made Safe provides Monarch with expertise and skills for risk identification, innovative safety improvement actions and industry best practices. Made Safe also provides third-party verification and up-to-date information regarding safety regulations and legislation, to assist with compliance.

“Safety must be an everyday activity,” says Cook. “It can’t be just a response to an incident, but should rather be ingrained in the thinking and actions at all levels of the organization.”

Beyond Made Safe, Cook has found value in many additional aspects of membership.

“CME Manitoba’s training programs, notably in LEAN manufacturing, have been invaluable to our staff and ultimately to our operations,” says Cook. “The opportunities to network with other members provide us with a broader perspective on overall business trends and issues and promotes the sharing of best practices.”

FOCUS ON: MADE SAFE

Made Safe is guided by an industry-led Safety Council, made up of representatives across manufacturing sub-groups. The Safety Council provides direction to the program, and ensures an ongoing close connection to the industry.

Made Safe instructors have backgrounds in the manufacturing industry and other industries, with additional education in ergonomics, audits and professional level services. Classes and courses are available on a regular basis in urban centres, or can be delivered on-site to your company.

Dave Johns, Winpak

NETWORKING

Page 20: CME Programs and Services Brochure

We helped Winpak and their employees connect with other leaders in manufacturing.

Winpak Ltd. manufactures and distributes high-quality packaging materials and related packaging machines. Their best-in-class products are used primarily for the protection of perishable foods, beverages and in health care applications.

Dave Johns, President Winpak Division of Winpak Ltd., is a strong believer that Winpak has benefited from their long-term participation with CME Manitoba. Members since 2004 and a former board member himself, Johns believes that the access Winpak has received to the Manitoba manufacturing community through CME Manitoba has helped their team perform to an even higher standard.

Through ongoing networking, as well as shared learning and event-specific participation, Winpak team members leverage knowledge from other leaders in their fields.

“Employee participation at Dare to Compete has been especially valuable over the years. It’s great that the largest manufacturing conference on the prairies happens every year, in our own backyard. It’s an opportunity to learn from other leaders and connect with peers across sub-sectors that we can’t pass up,” Johns says.

Winpak employees at every level and specialty can benefit both personally and professionally from the many networking events held throughout the calendar year.

“CME Manitoba events and consortium leveraged-learning networks have helped our team members form valuable contacts that have strengthened their skills, developed connections and helped them accelerate their journeys,” notes Johns. “Our people are our greatest strength. A strong, engaged team has in turn made us a more competitive company on an international scale.”

Through the CME Manitoba network, Winpak also discovered the power of Innovation Engineering – an established system for creating, proving and implementing meaningfully unique solutions to business issues, challenges and opportunities. With Innovation Engineering, businesses can increase the speed of innovation to market by 6 times, while decreasing the risk by up to 80 per cent.

“Our experience with Innovation Engineering has been very impressive,” Johns says. “We would strongly recommend the tools for any company looking to increase their competitive offering.”
