Funny man Tim Clue delivered a laugh-packed keynote address at the opening general session of GPC 2015. His show, entitled

the Science of Pharmacy Meets the Art of Motivation, explored the vital role that communication plays in the careers and personal lives of Georgia pharmacists.

Tim took an interactive approach to his topic, engaging audience members in whacky improv exercises and word games, and doctoring photos of GPhA leadership.

Tim was pleasantly surprised at the reactions he got from an audience he assumed was much more reserved. “I would never have thought pharmacy professionals would be so much fun,” he said after the show. “I want to thank Georgia Pharmacy for daring to be uncomfortable and truly connect. No joke,” Tim said.

Tim’s show was a vital part of a revamped opening general session that included awards for GPhA’s legislative champions and

the charter class of Leadership GPhA. Outgoing GPhA President Bobby Moody was confident the opening session was a huge hit. “I have had several members

say they thought it was awesome! The production values had that ‘national association’ sort of feel and the flow was spot on. It was a great opening session,” Moody said.

Tim Clue might have desired something along those lines. Trained in acting and directing at Eastern Michigan University, Clue had a couple of problems when it came to being a master thespian. One, "acting pays like $10 a pop," he laughs. For another,

he found taking direction wasn't one of his strong suits. "I started doing plays, and I hated how they were directed," says the 35-year-old. So Clue decided to focus on directing while

still performing comedy. And he has taken off. Clue and partner Marco Benassi created Short Story Theatre, a production company that had its premiere with 1994's "Greek

Stories." Later that year, Clue directed fellow comics A.J. Lentini, Bill Gorgo and Jimmy Rhodes in "Bark Like a Comic." Clue and Benassi collaborated on "The Jewish Melody, and Other Definitions of Confinement" in 1995, short stories written by

Dmitry Stonov on cigarette wrappers while he was imprisoned in a Soviet work camp in 1949. The two plan to remount "Coloring Potential," a play they did last year built around short stories of street life as seen through the eyes of kids they talked

to on Chicago's South Side. Highbrow stuff from a guy who tells jokes, right? But when Clue talks about these projects, it's with the passion that any artist

feels for his craft -- be it trying to make people laugh or trying to make people react through the motions of actors.

"To be honest, I think that's kind of plagued some of my advancement in the standup arena; I get so easily pulled in different directions," says Clue, a comic for more than eight years.

Two one-person productions starring local standups are benefiting from Clue's expertise: Sally Edwards' musing on family life in "Big People little people," and Mike Toomey's musing on television in "TV & Me: Confessions of a Vidiot Savant."

Edwards and Toomey, like Clue, are expanding their comedy to compensate for the wane in standup from the 1980s boom in popularity. "I just feel like we've all got to figure out together how we're going to move into the next century," Clue says.

Toomey says Clue has "helped introduce me to some more of the theatrical aspects" of staging a one-man show, while Edwards says Clue's "greatest strength as a director is his ability to take a script and see it as a moving picture on stage."

Clue's career parallels that of Woody Allen, in that both are standups who moved into other mediums. But unlike Allen, Clue plans to remain in standup. He's opening for Las Vegas act Pudgy at Zanies-Vernon Hills this weekend (230 Hawthorn Village

Commons, Vernon Hills; 847-549-6030). "When you write standup and perform standup," he explains, "you are writing and performing every day, and

that helps you understand all aspects of writing. And I would never, ever give it up, just because it's the great tutor. It's an unbelievable teacher of stage and of craft and of language.
