In 2009, Codsall Community High School set up
the first full-time, school based football
programme in England. Since then it has gone
from strength to strength with over 95% of
students graduating from the school with 3 A*
grades at A-Level standard. It has been
recognised by Ofsted as an Outstanding course.
What is the aim?
The aim of the Football Academy is for its
students to achieve nationally recognised
qualifications, giving them every opportunity to
progress into Further Education or employment,
whilst actively engaging in daily physical activity.
What will you study?
Students will follow the BTEC National Extended
Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence). It
is a nationally recognised qualification and is
equivalent to 3 traditional A-Levels. Students will
also complete the Level 1 & 2 Football Coaching
awards, in-house, alongside their First Aid and
Safeguarding qualifications.
What will be your Programme of Study?
Your daily timetable will be split with 3 hours
dedicated to the BTEC National Extended
Diploma in Sport and 2 hours dedicated to the
Football Academy Programme.
On Wednesday afternoons you will participate in
a competitive fixture and spend part of the
morning preparing for it including a pre-match
meal. All games are recorded for match analysis.
Staff
We have five full-time members of staff, all with a
background in either playing or coaching at
professional club level. Between them they deliver
the entire academic and practical curriculum, an
important factor when choosing a place to study.
Richard Jones is Director of Sport and Head of the
Football Academy, and previously manager of both
Staffordshire Schools FA and Staffordshire FA
representative teams.
Peter Shearer is an ex-professional having played
for Cheltenham Town, Birmingham City and
Bournemouth under both Harry Redknapp and Tony
Pulis, and coached at Walsall FC.
Tom Scott is a qualified FA Affiliate Education
Tutor who delivers our FA Level 1 and Level 2
coaching courses in-house.
Courtney Pitt is an ex-professional listing Chelsea,
Portsmouth, Luton and Cambridge Utd as his
former clubs, playing under high profile managers
such as Gianluca Vialli, Glenn Hoddle, Ruud Gullit,
Claudio Ranieri and Harry Redknapp.
Matt Bainbridge is a recent addition to the staff
having significant coaching experience in the
academy at Manchester United.
The Academic Programme of Study
The BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport
gives learners the opportunity to develop a range
of skills and techniques, personal skills and
attitudes essential for successful performance in
working life.
19 Units (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) are covered
over the two year course, including; Anatomy &
Physiology, Assessing Risk in Sport, Training &
Fitness for Sport, Sports Nutrition, Sport
Psychology, Technical & Tactical Skills in Sport,
Athlete’s Lifestyle, Sport Business, Coaching, Current Issues in Sport, Work Experience in Sport.
The Football Academy Programme
Two hours a day will be dedicated to the student’s Football Development. This includes,
• Technical and tactical coaching • Individual player assessment and feedback • Individual football related fitness profiles • Dietary and nutritional advice from on-site physio
• Pre and post match analysis • Competitive weekly matches
What are your career opportunities?
The majority of students graduate onto University
courses in either the UK or USA. Other popular
destinations include full-time employment in the
sports industry or a career in the Forces.
Many ex-Football Academy students come back to
the school to do gap year placements whilst at
University, which we fully encourage.
