Lent: A Time in the Wilderness

What is Lent? Lent is the forty-day period before Easter, excluding Sundays; it begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.

Why are Sundays excluded from the forty days? Sunday is the day on which Christ rose … always a day of celebration. On Sunday we must celebrate Christ's resurrection for our salvation. All Sundays of the year are days of celebration.

Why are the forty days called Lent? They are called Lent because it comes from lengten, the Old English word for spring. In almost all other languages its name comes from the Latin term quadragesima, or "the forty days." We do this because prior to undertaking his public ministry, Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness praying and fasting (Matthew 4:2). Lent is a period of prayer and fasting for us in imitation of Christ. Originally it was the time people prepared for baptism. For those already baptized it is a time of preparation to celebrate our baptism into the death and res-urrection of Christ. It is our time of spiritual wilderness … a time for us to prepare to celebrate the joy of Easter by reflecting on our sins, making changes in our lives … trying to live the Gospel more fully in imitation of Christ.

When does Lent begin? Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 46 days before Easter. On Ash Wednesday we have our foreheads signed with ashes in the form of a Cross, to remind us of our mortality. It is also a day of fast and abstinence. The date for Easter is based on a complex formulae going back nearly 1900 years: the first Sunday, after the first full moon, after the vernal equinox (the first day of Spring or March 21st.) Because the Lunar calendar is different from the solar calendar Easter falls on a different Sunday every year. This year it is April 16th.

What is a day of fast and abstinence? A day of fast is one on which Catholics who are eighteen to sixty years old may eat a single, normal meal and have two smaller meals, so long as these do not add up to a second meal. A day of abstinence is a day on which Catholics fourteen years or older are required to abstain from eating meat.

In addition to Ash Wednesday, are any other days during Lent days of fast or abstinence? All Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Good Friday, the day on which Christ was crucified, is a day of both fast and abstinence. All days in Lent are appropriate for fasting or abstaining, but Church law does not re-quire it on those days.

Why are Fridays during Lent days of abstinence? This is because Jesus died on Friday, making it an especially appropriate day to remember our sins by denying ourselves something we enjoy. During the rest of the year Catholics in this country are not required to abstain from meat any longer, but all Fridays remain days of penance.

What is Lent about? Lent is a time of reconciliation. A time when we make space in our lives to think about our relationship with God and neighbor and the ways in which we are responding or failing to respond to His love and care for us. We do this in three primary ways: through prayer, fasting and alms (charity.) Prayer is communication with God … when we work on our prayer life; we work on improving our relationship with God. Prayer can become easier, more fluid, more open, and more intimate. Determining a time & place for regular prayer is a good starting point. Alms … charity … is about working on our relationship with our neighbors and all other people. It re-quires that we see the needs of others and respond generously. It’s about caring for the poor and needy. Fasting is about caring for oneself … by eating better … eating less. It’s about recognizing that the mind and spirit of a human being is more powerful than the needs of ones body. It’s about training the body to be stronger & healthier.

Results of the Lone Rose Collection

On the weekend of January 9/10, we asked parishioners to support mothers who choose life for their unborn babies by donating money and baby goods to the White Rose and Birth Choice Crisis Pregnancy Cen-ters. With the Lone Red Rose that was carried to the altar, we remem-bered the 58 million babies who have been aborted since that fateful decision. This past weekend we celebrated life by sharing what we have and putting our words into action.

The results were another pickup truck full of donated baby goods, just over $8,800 raised in cash and checks, and numerous inquiries of how to get involved, to support mothers who choose LIFE versus abortion.

The Knights of Columbus and Carter Blood Care would like to thank all parishioners who visited the Blood Drive on January 10. We now have the final results of your efforts.

ST. MARK THE EVANGELIST CATHOLIC COMMUNITY

I’d like to share that it is my birthday today, and as I do every year, I take a moment to in-trospectively look back on the past years… I have had the privilege of being part of the Faith Formation staff for 17 years! These years

at St. Mark have taught me a lot and have introduced me to many wonderful parents and their children. As Catholic parents, I am assuming we all have the same hopes and dreams for our children with regard to their Faith Formation: We baptize our children; we educate them in the Catholic faith by enrolling them in Catholic school or in a Faith Formation program. We are so excited to witness their First Communion and Confirmation. We share our religious values, prayers, and traditions with them - all with the prayer that they will continue to know and love and practice the teachings of the Catholic faith once they grow up and are on their own. Of course, there are no guarantees in this world, but I can claim to be a little wiser now that I am a little older; if we do not take our children to Mass on Sunday’s and Holy Days of Obligation – our prayer that they do this when they are on their own is nil! What is the point of educating them in the Catholic faith if we are not showing them how to practice it by taking them to Mass!?! It is wonderful to see all the children participating in Faith Formation, but it is so sad to realize that many of them do not attend Mass. So my birthday wish for this year is that parents that have gotten into the habit of not tak-ing their children to Mass regularly on Sunday’s will start to do so!

This weekend, we recognize our parish community, and would like to take this opportunity to thank St. Mark parishioners for support-ing our parish school. Join us in a rescue mission… It’s 40 days of prayer and fasting, public outreach and peaceful vigil outside the Planned Parenthood office in Plano, just on the other side of the highway, at Pla-no Parkway and 75.

This is a rescue mission, to propose alternatives to Planned Parenthood’s clients and to reach the workers and landowners themselves with our message of peaceful concern:

It’s a Lenten campaign, running from Ash Wednesday, February 10 to Palm Sunday, March 20.

It’s ecumenical: over 72 churches and organizations have already come out at least once since last summer, and at least one third are not from our local Catholic parishes.

It’s effective: in the last five years the 40 Days campaigns have led to the closing of Planned Parenthood in the other two Collin County locations, Sherman and McKinney. In fact, one of our campaign leaders is Ramona Trevino, the former manager of the Sherman office.

It’s merciful: there are two other women’s centers within ten minutes that provide the same services, but without referrals to abortions. People just need to hear their options.

This is the year of mercy, and this is a rescue mission we can all take part in, even by just committing one hour per week to stand in the public right of way to pray. It’s in our neighborhood. It’s a local problem that needs a local solution.

If you’re ready to join us, please send an email to [email protected], or visit our website at 40daysforlife.com/plano. Campaign Director: Randy Le Grand.
