Course Description

• Welcome to Biology! This is a year course will earn you 1.0 science credit. Over the course of this year we will develop an understanding of lab safety, unifying themes of life, and the proper use of microscope. We will also focus on the relationship between structure, composition, function, and classification of the prokaryotic, eukaryotic cell, all living organisms and use of energy to carry out the functions of life. Other concepts will include how characteristics are transmitted from parents to offspring, genetic disorder, genetic engineering and human biology.

What will I be learning in biology this year?

Page 4: Classroom Rules & Expectations D-302 Biology Devlyn_Henriques@notes.k12.hi.us

Prerequisite

• Conceptual Physics & Chemistry (see ASAP me if you have not completed the prerequisites)

Page 5: Classroom Rules & Expectations D-302 Biology Devlyn_Henriques@notes.k12.hi.us

Text book…

• Biology (pd. 2, 3, 4): Biology, by Miller & Levine (dragon fly cover)

• Honors (pd. 5&6): Essential Biology with Physiology by Campbell

• Your textbook is available online! Let me know if you would like this.

Page 6: Classroom Rules & Expectations D-302 Biology Devlyn_Henriques@notes.k12.hi.us

Required Materials…

• Composition notebook next week Friday 8/15

• Helpful NOT required…color pencils & ear phones

• One roll of paper towel (extra credit!) next week Friday 8/15

• Other Working email address with access to it (know your

password to get in). Internet access. ACCESS! You can come here or to

the library before school, during wiki/lunch, or sign up for my ELO. You can also go to a neighbor, friend, family, etc. Last resort…ask me for the paper copy.

_____% Assignments…

• Assignments include both class work & homework.

• You will be assigned class work AND homework every single day.

• Class work should be completed by the end of the class period (unless specified otherwise).

• Paper homework will be turned in at the beginning of the next period (unless specified otherwise).

• Computer homework is assigned a week in advanced and due that day first thing in the morning.

• No LATE WORK will be accepted at all! Be responsible and complete all assignments when they are due!

• I repeat!! NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!!!

Page 8: Classroom Rules & Expectations D-302 Biology Devlyn_Henriques@notes.k12.hi.us

_____% Exams & Friday’s Wrap Up Quiz

• Exams will be announced approximately 1 week in advance.

• Every Friday you will take a wrap up QUIZ. This quiz will test you on the material that was covered during the WEEK.

• Unsure if you missed an exam or a quiz? Check the white board – you have 1 week to make up a missed test or quiz.

• Treat quizzes like exams. You take more quizzes then exams in a quarter. The number of points received from quizzes are worth just

as much as a test. Not doing well on quizzes can drop your grade

tremendously.

Page 9: Classroom Rules & Expectations D-302 Biology Devlyn_Henriques@notes.k12.hi.us

_____% Projects

• Each quarter you will be assigned a project. Projects range in points from 100-400 points.

• Projects will focus on the current topic being covered during that quarter. First quarter is a design of a controlled experiment. Second quarter focuses around the cell, third quarter the focus is genetics & GMO while fourth quarter is a cumulative project covering

what you learned over the course of the entire year.

• Failure to complete a quarter project will drop your grade an entire letter grade.

Page 10: Classroom Rules & Expectations D-302 Biology Devlyn_Henriques@notes.k12.hi.us

_____% Notebook

Notebook – all lecture notes, textbook notes, research notes will be written in your notebook. You will bring this notebook to class every single day. It is also a good idea to take your notebook home to help you complete homework assignment and to help study for quizzes and exams.

Page 11: Classroom Rules & Expectations D-302 Biology Devlyn_Henriques@notes.k12.hi.us

Successful Academics…

• Attend class dailydaily. Even if you're absent just 1 day you will

fall behind, feel lost, and overwhelmed.

Unexcused absences will result in “F”“F” and zeroszeros for

whatever was due on that day, as well as zero for that

Excused absences - Must be cleared at the officeoffice with a

note from parent or doctor. See section "Make-Up Work"
