Our beautiful Ho`olaulea and
Graduation Ceremony has brought
us to the realization that the
2016-17 school year is drawing
rapidly to a close. I would like to
take this opportunity to thank the parents,
guardians and the community for their continued
support of our school. It would be a very different
place without your support.
We have sent our seniors of 2017 out into the
world and in August we will be welcoming our new
pre-school students to Hana School. I am excited
that we will be expanding our Kaiapuni Hawaiian Immersion program from a kindergarten class this
year to a kindergarten and first grade class for the
2017-18 school year.
We encourage you to take advantage of the
summer enrichment programs that will be provided
to our keiki by the Hana Complex 21st Century
Grant Partners.
Have a safe and relaxing summer!
Po‘o Kumu,
Richard Paul
We would like to congratulate the Class of 2017
on all of their accomplishments throughout
their lives thus far.
Mahalo and congratulations to their makua,
kupuna, ‘ohana, kumu, and hoaaloha, because it
truly takes a village to raise a child. Here in Hana,
we are so grateful for all the support that our
children receive from the community.
Best of luck to our new Hana School Graduates on
their future endeavors. GO DRAGONS!

High School Students—Make the most of your summer; get a job, do
community service (Hana Youth Center, Dialysis Center, Mahele Farms,
Hana Library, Hale Hulu Mamo, etc.). Have fun, exercise, and rejuvenate.
Class of 2018—Before school ends, sign up for the August 26th SAT
test! Start thinking about YOUR future and what you want to do after
graduation. Think hard! Plan your personal essays-What
makes you a good leader? What obstacles have you faced
and learned from? How will you give back to your communi-
ty? How has your culture influenced who you are? What are
you passionate about?
If you need counseling services over the summer, please contact Ku’ulei
Galago, ‘Ohana Makamae, or Hana Health.
In order to participate in athletics, you must have a 2.0 and NO F’s.
Any questions or concerns
about your child?
Don’t hesitate to contact our
Counseling Department.

There will be a new schedule for the 2017-18. The main purpose of the new schedule is to provide additional teacher training and
meeting times but there are many secondary benefits.
The schedule will be from 7:45 AM to 2:00 PM each day of the week Monday through Friday. There will be no short Wednesdays
(out at 1:15 PM) as we have done in the past.
The unique feature of the new schedule is approximately every other Friday will be optional for students. The required
instructional time can be completed in nine (9) of the ten (10) school days with one Friday being the optional tenth day. For
those students who choose to come to school on the optional Friday, the buses will run on Fridays (free of charge to all students)
and breakfast and lunch will be served (free of charge to all students). Supervised activities will be provided by our 21st Century
Grant Partners for those students who come on the optional Friday while the teachers are engaged in scheduled meetings and
training activities.
Benefits of the optional Friday include:
-Medical/dental appointments can be scheduled on the optional Fridays so no instruction is missed.
-School athletic teams will not have to leave school early and miss instruction on away game Fridays.
-Detention and suspensions will occur on the optional Fridays so no school time is missed.
-Parent conferences, Student Support Team meetings, Core meetings and IEP meetings can occur on Fridays without teachers
missing class time.
-Noisy yard work can take place near the classrooms on Friday without disrupting instructional time.
-Teachers can meet on Fridays without being pulled from their classrooms.
This year’s Athletic Banquet will be held at the Hana School
Cafeteria from 6 to 8 pm. Athletes and parents are FREE, and any
additional guests are $5 each.
Join us for a night of dinner, awards, and more!
Please RSVP to the Athletic Department ASAP.

Hana Middle School 8th graders along with their teachers, have been
preparing for their 8th grade banquet which was held on Friday, May 12,
2017. They spent two weeks at Kahanu Garden learning to make lei po'o
and prepare an imu for the food being served at the banquet. They
prepared flower arrangements and posters. They even wrote and read
speeches to their parents and future high school teachers. Two students
were recognized by the Soroptimist Club of Maui for their outstanding
citizenship. Owali Moeai and Tuupua Helekahi are pictured here with their
awards. The Middle School teachers and staff would like to thank all the
parents and family members who have helped support their 8th grader.
High School, here they come!
