Vaya con Dios to our friend and one of the best reps ever serving Northern Indi-ana...our own Doug Mills! Doug has served directors in the Michiana area for decades and brings his distinguished career to retirement in just a few weeks.

Originally a band director, he teamed with his partner and pal, Paul Milliman for many years servicing schools with Blessing School Music. In 2009, QF merged with Blessing. Former owners, Paul and Doug have continued working at the same consistently high level of service for the directors and families they serve.

We wish Doug all the best for a long and happy retirement with his wife, Linda and their family. We will miss his bright smile, warm personality, and “eager to please” attitude that earned respect from everyone he met. Congratulations on a terrific career, Doug!!

Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company stemming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and

cello, serving as clinician and consultant for musical instrument and educational

and is available by appointment to individually help you and your students find just

the right instrument. You’ll see Lloyd at conferences of IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Vio-

Without the exceptional participation by the public school orchestra directors of Chicagoland (including our friends from Michigan and Indiana who made the trip into Chicago!) the concert would never had been the success it was. I extend my most sincere thanks to you all. The posi-tive effect of the day went well beyond what I ever envisioned and continues because many people felt inspired from your efforts. One audience member wrote to Rush Hour: “It turned the day into a Holiday event like Fourth of July - A downtown community event which was uplifting.” The Rise and Shine Orchestra was the string orchestra portion of PLAY THE PLAZA, which was a major piece of the Make Music Chicago event sponsored in Chicago by RushHourConcerts. Rush Hour organizers placed the count of or-chestra participants at an amazing num-ber of seventy-five! The Daley Plaza personnel had to keep bringing out sec-

tions of stage plat-forms as more and more performers arrived. It was an exhilarating experi-ence for me as you all arrived and just (as I knew you would) made it hap-pen! Who else could pull such an event off like this, but you-all! As it turned out, hav-ing a rehearsal at

9:00AM worked to our advantage. During our rehearsal, hundreds of people walked by on their way to work, stopped for a moment and said a few kind words to Rush Hour organizers about their appre-ciation for our presence. One judge enter-ing the Daley Building said, “We need this here everyday so people entering this building relax and decompress as they enter”. Thanks, your Honor! Maybe not everyday, but, we’ve been invited back next year! So, mark you calendar. JUNE 21 – always on the Solstice no matter what day of the week. CSO cellist, Brant Taylor, made this comment after playing with the Rise and Shine Orchestra. He said, “It reminded me of when I did, and, why I fell in love with playing my cello in the first place.” Thanks Brant! Thanks, Paul Phillips! Thanks, Blair Milton. You all have so often offered you time and energy to sup-port public school orchestras and we will never forget it. You inspire us all!

Whether it is a string orchestra again or if we go full orchestra (working on that option), we’ll be playing either to string version or the full orchestra version of Hoedown from Rodeo! That plus other gems we know and love. Our tribute this year to Merle Issac pro-vided a special moment for Bennet Schumacher, who is going to begin playing bass this year in his school or-chestra and was our guest con-ductor for the Apollo Suite. Those of you who were there will appreciate this: Remember how I was holding his arm at the wrist to move him in the con-ducting patterns? Well, by the time we got to the da Capo section back to the “bouncy 2 beat pattern”, he separated his arm and took over conducting on his own with full command. I was laughing inside as his baton conveyed the style, mood, and tempo for the group. What a cool moment. I was telling George Quinlan (our prin-cipal percussionist *ahem*) about how I wanted to do something for the orchestra directors for their participation in Rise and Shine and we came up with a FEAST of a plan. For schools only, we will have instruments offered at special “garage sale” pricing. You deserve a boost and we will have a HUGE cornu-copia of instruments and bows for you to select from. Plan your budget now, you will benefit greatly. And, thank you, thank you, thank you. Sincerely. lp

It’s back-to-school season and that means new band methods and new con-cert band, orchestra and marching music. This season Kjos brings us two new methods. Rhythm Basics is a rhythm method written by Wendy Barden. This book is a supplemental workbook loosely based on the string orchestra method String Basics. This method

strives to challenge students to expand their understanding of rhythms and use a higher level of think-ing when working through any rhythm. The method is se-quential and often refers back to

rhythms learned previously in the method, keeping each new rhythm and concept fresh in the students mind. Rhythm Basics focuses on rhythms commonly found in middle school and early high school compositions. Stu-dents will feel challenged without feel-ing overwhelmed. While this book is written as a supplement to, and loosely based on, a string method, it is a rhythm workbook allowing students of any in-strument to use it effectively. It truly does allow any young musician to be-come a rhythm master. The other new method from Kjos this year is Technique and Musicianship, the third book in the Tradition of Excel-lence series. This band method is de-

signed for students who have completed the second book of any band method. Students go beyond learning how to play their instruments, into learning how to play music by focus-ing on technically

    challenging exercises. These exercises

include scales, thirds and arpeggios; ex-ercises for technique, articulation and intonation. Melodious etudes and ex-cerpts from classical repertoire and full band chorales in 16 major and minor keys round out this complete 3rd method book. This method goes above and be-yond techniques books of the past by placing the emphasis on specific musical skills and offering options for differenti-ated learning and instruction. With sepa-rate books for flute, oboe, bassoon, clari-net clarinet, bass, alto clarinet, alto saxo-phone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxo-phone, trumpet, trombone, baritone bass clef, baritone treble clef (coming soon), tuba and percussion, this method is per-fect in a private lesson, small group or whole band setting. As students start to learn their instru-ments and how to play music, teacher’s look towards the first concert. Alfred Publishing has release Light Concert Collection, in the Accent on Achieve-ment family. This collection is a com-pilation of 22 full arrangements origi-nally composed by John O’Reilly and Mark Williams. O’Reilly and Wil-liams are well known for their young band compositions and that is what you will find in this collection. This collection is perfect for the begin-ning or second year band. The works in this collection correspond exactly to the Accent on Achievement methods, mak-ing the pieces found within accessible and fun to all students. This is a great tool in teaching performance through concerts as students will easily recognize the writing styles of both O’Reilly and Williams. For students in their second and third

years of playing, Hal Leonard has brought forth another great folio to keep students engaged and practicing on their own time. 12 Smash Hits has a separate book for flute, clari-net, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn, trombone, violin, viola and cello. Each folio contains music students hear on the radio and will quickly learn to play on their instrument. Making the music easy to recognize and easy to play, stu-dents will get the instant gratification of being able to play their favorite song. Songs in this folio include “Ho Hey”, “I Knew You Were Trouble”, and “Some Nights” by artists such as The Lumi-neers, Taylor Swift and fun.; as well as nine others. This folio will keep stu-dents playing for hours. Last year brought us a powerful movie about one of America’s most recogniz-able presidents: “Lincoln”. The music composed by John Williams (and re-coreded by our own Chicago Symphony Orchestra!!) was a key ingredient in making this such a powerful movie, as the music is powerful even on its own. Hal Leonard has released William’s soundtrack under the title Lincoln, ar-ranged by Jay Bocook. Arranged for the concert stage, students and audi-ences will experi-ence a range of mu-sic from poignant and understated to spirited and buoy-ant. The music will take players and l i s t ene r s a l ike through the highs and lows that were experienced in the movie, and in life.

Amanda Jennings is a bassoonist and a

former band director. As print music

buyer for Q&F, she has the opportunity
