Now the world knows it. Truven, one of the world’s leading sources of tracking healthcare quality, has ranked Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, and Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles, in the 100 top hospitals out of 2,822 in the United States.

And compared to other regional medical centers, Lakeland’s costs are much lower.*

If all hospitals operated like Lakeland, more lives would be saved, patients would have fewer complications, stay in the hospital fewer days, and pay less for healthcare.

FAMILY matters

When Carla Leininger’s family moved to a new state, they needed to find a new doctor. In the past, she had asked friends for recommendations, but this time she decided to go a bit further to find the right care provider for her family of six. “I scheduled a block of time to interview all the doctors in the practice one at a time. The office was more than happy to comply.”

During that interview process, she asked a variety of questions in the hopes of finding a doctor that she felt most comfortable with and confident in. For Carla, she had a specific type of doctor in mind. “I feel that the parent and the doctor are a team in your child's well-being,” she explained. “I like it when they include me in the decision-making process about what will happen next and also why we will be going this route instead of this other route.”

Ross Van Overberghe took his search for a new doctor very seriously as well, and he also knew what he wanted in a doctor/patient relationship. “Because of past experiences with doctors not being thorough, having one foot out the door the whole appointment or being completely hypocritical, I wanted to be sure I was getting what I was paying for,” Ross said. “I was looking for a doctor that practiced what he preached. Someone who cared about staying in shape himself. I also wanted a doctor that remembered what it was like to be a regular person without all the specialized knowledge doctors learn in school.”

During his search, Ross didn’t schedule an interview in the same way Carla did. “I evaluated him from his bio and then from my first appointment. I made my first appointment a physical. I was due for one, but it also allowed me to see how thorough he would be.”

The first step that Carla and Ross took in their search for a physician was to understand their own wants and needs in a doctor. They understood what sort of doctor/patient relationship they desired, and what sort of doctor’s philosophy and practice best works for them.

The following is a list of questions to ask a potential health care provider. But, the first step to beginning your own search is to ask yourself these questions and determine what you feel the correct answers should be. By doing so, you have a greater chance of building a lasting and healthy relationship with your physician.

While expectant moms may enter the hospital well-equipped to handle questions about vaccines for their newborns, they may not be prepared for decisions on their own vaccinations. Keeping our children safe is our highest priority and, in some

instances, getting a vaccine ourselves can help protect our children as well.

Many hospitals are now offering the Dtap vaccine (sometimes also referred to astheTd,TdporAdacelvaccine)tonewmothersfollowingdelivery, aswellasmothers whose previous birth occurred over three years ago.

What is the Dtap vaccine? The Dtap vaccine works to protects women against three diseases: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (also known as whooping cough) by providing non-infectious proteins. It is given as an injection, usually in the muscle of the upper arm, much like a flu shot.

Pertussis is life-threatening condition for newborns and is usually transmitted by an older adult in the household. It’s characterized by severe coughing spells that make it almost impossible for an infant to eat or sleep and can lead to pneumonia, brain damage, seizures and even death. You may have seen the commercials advertising that the “most dangerous place for baby is in your arms” – unfortunately, because whooping cough is usually passed from adult to baby in close physical proximity, the sentiment can be true. The Center for Disease Control andPrevention(CDC)reportsthat, incaseswherethesourceofpertussiscouldbeidentified, mothers were responsible for 30–40% of infant infections.

In addition to boosting antibodies to ward off whooping cough, the Dtap vaccine also provides protection against the diseases of tetanus and diphtheria. Tetanus is commonly referred to as ‘lockjaw’ because the bacteria that causes the disease leads to muscle spasms and tightening; in some cases, it can be so severe that a personmaybeunabletoopenhisorhermouth.AccordingtotheCDC,tetanuscanlead to death in up to 2 out of 10 cases, and can affect all age groups.

Diphtheria is also caused by bacteria and starts out much like a common respiratory infection: cold-like symptoms, a mild fever, sore throat. However, it can quickly develop into a life-threatening condition. The bacteria toxins can attack the heart and respiratory system and cause a thick coating in the throat that can interfere with breathing. The CDC reports that, for children under the age of 5, up to 1 in 5 children who fall ill with diphtheria die.

What New Moms Need to KnowBy Chaunie Marie Brusie

The Dtap

vACCINE

Who should receive the Dtap vaccine?Healthcare providers urge all adults, but especially parents with newborns, to receive the vaccine. Infants cannot receive the whooping cough vaccination (it’s not safe untilagetwo),soit’simportantforadultstoreceive the vaccination to prevent the spread of the disease. If it’s been more than three years since you had a baby or if you can’t remember if you had the Dtap vaccination with previous pregnancies or births, the CDC recommends that you should still receive the vaccination as a preventive measure.

Where can I get the Dtap vaccine? If you are a new mother expecting your first child, your nurse will most likely ask if you would like to receive the Dtap vaccine after delivery. He or she can provide you with an information sheet on the vaccination and answer any questions you may have. You can also speak to your health care provider about receiving the Dtap vaccine during your pregnancy. Although the CDC recommendsthat all adults who come into regular contact with children receive the vaccine, the hospital will only provide the Dtap vaccine to mothers who are patients. You can ask your spouse, babysitters or the child’s grandparents to receive the vaccination through their primary care provider or a community health center.

Is it safe for breastfeeding mothers? The CDC states that the Dtap vaccine is safe for breastfeeding mothers. In fact, breastfeeding mothers may actually provide greater protection to their infants against whooping cough by passing on antibodies through their breast milk.

Risks of the Dtap vaccine include redness and swelling at the injection site, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and allergic reaction. The CDC also reports that, in some extremely rare cases, the vaccine may have been linked to serious brain injury and even death, although it cannot be proven that the vaccine was the cause.

As with any medical procedure or vaccine, you have the right to refuse the Dtap vaccine. By educating yourself on the vaccine before you enter into the hospital to have your baby, you can make the most informed decision for your family.

10-Minute Nature Games to Play with Your Kids

FAMILY fun

E very day, new plants are popping up, birds are singing and animals are searching for places to raise their young. It’s spring!

Here are three simple activities any busy mom can enjoy with her child in the backyard.

All these activities are ‘scale-able’, meaning that, with a little imagination, you can make them simpler for pre-schoolers or more complex and scientific to engage elementary-age kids. In addition to nature exploration, these games hone skills such as math and sorting, language arts and creative thinking. But don’t tell your kids that – just have fun!

Explore the Outdoors

By Evelyn Kirkwood

Hula Hoop SafariSet a hula hoop flat on the ground, plop down on your bellies and look. Even in the lawn, you might notice clover, a crawling ant, bits of brown soil and more. Try different locations. For example, place the hoop where your child can dig with a small hand trowel or under a tree or in your flower garden. Older kids can keep a written list. Look with a magnifying glass if you have one. Talk about what you find together.Whydosomeplaceshavemorekindsofthingsinthecircle?Lawns are monocultures, and support just a few types of plants, insects or animal life. Gardens and shrubby areas support a greater variety of living things.

If your child enjoys stories, make one up together about a tiny elf exploring the world inside the hoop.

Nohulahoop?Useacircleofstring.

Bandanna-ramaYou’ll need two bandannas, or any small cloth (one for you and one foryourchild)andaplacewhereyoucangathersomenaturalitemseasily. Spread your bandanna on the ground and set a few nature items underneath it – two or three for younger children, four to eight ormoreforolderchildren.Acorns, pebbles, pinecones, dryleavesanddandelions are a few examples of things you might place under the bandanna. Lift up your bandanna for a few seconds so your child can study what is there, and then ask him to gather the same items to put on his bandanna.

You might start with three pebbles. The next round might be a pebble and two leaves. Increase the complexity as they get the hang of it. Older kids love taking turns setting it up for others to search. It’s great fun watching them scramble around the yard looking for items.

Bag It!Engaging all the senses is important for a young child’s development. We are bombarded daily with noise and images. Touch often gets ignored in sensory development.

Gather a few nature items from your yard. Put one each in a cloth bag or brown paper lunch sack without them seeing it. Have your child reach in and describe the item inside. Is itrough, soft, dry?Round, pointy, stringy?Cantheyguesswhatitis?

Young children may not be able to describe what they feel or guess the item. Display a duplicate set of items for them, and see if they can guess which one is in each bag.

This game requires trust development, and some children will be wary of putting their hand in the bag. Demonstrate that nothing will hurt them by putting your own hand in the bag.

Time Well SpentResearch shows that time spent in nature improves mood, improves attention spans and promotes exercise. Hey! That’s good for busy moms, too!

One Step Ahead

(Of Your Strong-Willed Child)By Andie Kingsbury

Parenting is often a tough job laden with high levels of responsibility and a low amount of thanks. Parenting the iron-willed child bumps your stress up to the next level, making

parenting feel more like reality television and less like the enchanting walk in the park you had once envisioned. If you are the parent, relative or caretaker of a more independent child with a serious stubborn streak, don’t give up! There are so many ways to adapt your lifestyle, home environment or parenting style to keep you sane without crushing the positive side of your child’s strong spirit.

Accept your child for who he or she already is. We all want to be accepted just as we are, and your strong-willed child is no different. Often, inflexible children get the brunt of negative attitudes from both peers and adults. It is vital that you give your daughter or son the knowledge of your acceptance, good days and bad.

Hear her heart: when she is pushing for her own way or fighting against you, listen to see if there is more below the surface waiting to becommunicated.Understandthateachchildisuniquelydifferent, andreinforce in his mind that he has value just as he is. Love by example, making the choice to never crush her inner self, or leave him feeling ashamed.

Intentionally giggling and laughing together on a daily basis can help keep positive bonds. It is as important to find ways to have fun together as it is to correct the wrongs, and you may just find that the extra

attention helps provide much-needed interaction. Remember that these moments of trial may be difficult, but they only last for a short time, and the memories will be priceless… especially when you get to tell your grandkids about their mommy or daddy’s shenanigans!

Believe in your child’s ability to succeed. Offer opportunities for success beginning right where your child already is. Sometimes, that might mean starting over with the basics: reward simple skills or behaviors on a star chart and be sure to include easy-to-accomplish successes. Question your own parenting style and adapt it to integrate your child’s unique learning styles with your instinctive type of parenting.

Expectations need to be known up front to help lessen the stress of the unknown. Something as simple as being clearly told what is to be expected may reduce tantrum rates and frustration levels. When transitioning between activities, simply giving a five-minute warning to remind your son or daughter that it will be time to start cleaning up the toys can help bring him back to the present and/or get her into the stateofmindnecessaryforchange.Anadditionaltwo-minutewarningand then following through gives the stability of known expectations.

Consistent follow-through is key. If you give instructions, hold them accountable to choose obedience the first time they hear them. Supply them with the knowledge and tools they need to follow through with your instructions the first few times you introduce a chore or new

expectation. Once they are familiar with the expectations, if your child procrastinates, complains or refuses, gently walk him or her through the motions of obedience, and then address the non-compliance. Disobedience is best paired with natural consequences to help reinforce consistent follow-through and first-time obedience. For example, when your daughter doesn’t clear her place at the dinner table, ask her to clear her place, and then add that she must now also wipe down the dinner table. When your son is not playing well with others, move him to a quiet cubby where he can read his favorite books, listen to calming music or cuddle with his favorite lovey.

Whatever your current encounters are, consistently keep calm and speak peacefully. Be the example for your household in moderating your language, tone and voice level when strong wills challenge and tempers grow short. Help guide your child in expressing feelings of anger, frustration or stress at lower intensities. Encourage consistency in giving and receiving forgiveness. When you have prepared a relational tool box from which to work, you will find it to be less hectic to keep one step ahead of your strong-willed child. In time, you can help form that determined mind into a positive role model and leader.

Children with Autism Want to Play, Too…

By Sorah Stein & Ben Seifert

You Just May Have to Teach Them How!

FAMILY features • Autism Awareness

If you are the parent of a child with autism or have a child with autism in your classroom, there is a good chance that he or she lacks the skills necessary to take part in playing a game with peers. Let’s break these down one by one because not only will this be a good thing for the child, it will be a good thing for you, too! Think second cup of coffee, potty break…

Some of the tips include teaching kids turn-taking games and teaching siblings and/or peers to provide instructions, prompts and reinforcement. This may sound like an easy task because games and playingarefun, right?Well, formanychildrenwithautism, playingand games may not be desirable for multiple reasons: they may not know how to play the game, may not enjoy being around peers or may lack the prerequisite skills that are needed to play the game

1. Taking Turns: If your learner doesn’t currently play with siblings or peers at all or play any turn-taking games even with adults,

don't start with long games like Candyland or Chutes and Ladders. It’s best to start with short games that have a clear ending point, like all of the pieces are used. Teach the peer/sibling that, at first, they don't need to play the actual game. Instead, they should just practice taking turns. You can also teach the peer/sibling to prompt the child with autism to say 'my turn/your turn', before taking or passing the turn.

2. Learning the Game:Althoughthegamemaybefun, ifthechildhas never played it before, it may be more of a task than a good

time.Howdowegetpastthis?First, exposethechildtothegameandprovide some of their favorite things while playing the game. This will help them learn that the game is fun because they are getting some oftheirfavoritethingswhileplayingthegame. Also, makesurethatyour tone and demeanor are fun and excited (without overwhelming yourlearner)whileplayingthegame;ifyouhavefun, chancesarethechild you are teaching will have fun as well!

3. Favorite Things: If the child you are working with does not enjoy being around other children, it can be difficult to have him or

her play a game with siblings or peers. To help with this situation, have the sibling or peer provide some of the learner’s favorite things (asintheexampleabove).ThesecanincludeSkittles, stickers,French

fries, tickles, high-fives, etc. – whatever the learner likes and typically responds to. This will help establish being around other children as a preferred activity. Hopefully, this will lead to the child with autism seeking out peers with whom to play.

4. Lacking Skills: They may lack the prerequisite skills to play the game. Sometimes we think that just because a game is simple,

anyone can do it. Let’s take Connect Four, for example: pretty easy premise… you get four of the same color in a row and you win. But let’s break it down; you have to be able to take turns, know which color chip is yours versus what color chip your opponent uses, have the fine motor abilities to pick up the chip and put it in the board and use strategy to win the game. Not so simple when you put it that way, isit?Takingturnscanbeadifficultskillbecauseitrequiresthechild to wait on the behavior of another person before they can go. Not understanding this key component to a game can be a big hindrance to playing the game.

Sohowdoweteachthis?Thebestwayistobreakdownhowtoplaythe game and teach these skills one at a time. They can start by taking turns putting Connect Four pieces in the board without actually connecting the colors, then learn to connect the colors to make a line, then learn the strategy involved in blocking. Once the child learns these skills, combine them to produce more complex game play. Then, keep playing until the child with autism masters how to play this game and, moreimportantly, enjoysplayingthegame.Asanotherexample,a softball coach can help a child wanting to play second base. He or she might know how to field a ground ball and throw to first, but not be able to do it consistently. To get better, he or she needs repetition and many trials to get good. It is the same when teaching anything that is difficult: numerous trials are needed to master a skill.

Here are a few tips for success when teaching game play to a child with autism:

1. Be patient! Just because the game you are trying to teach is fun for most kids does not mean it will be fun for this child.

2. Break down the game so it is easily taught and understood.

3. Communicate with the children who will be playing with the child with autism and tell them to provide lots of reinforcement and, most importantly, to be a good friend! Children from ages 3-8 are generally very accepting, so this should be easy! But, it’s also crucial for the parent or teacher to provide praise and reinforcement to the peer/sibling for playing and being a good friend.

4. Remember that, for the learner with autism, this process is hard work. It’s very important to teach the peer/sibling to remind the child with autism to say when they are 'all done' and to accept with ending playtime at that point. We don’t want game play to be a bad experience because the kid was forced to play once he or she lost interest.

5. Some ideas of games to begin teaching include Catch, Go Fish with cards, a Go Fish game with a suction fishing pole, Memory (gradually increasing the numberofpairson theboard)andHi-Ho! Cherry-O.

6. Remember, games should be fun.

So have fun!

Like mini-van driving terrorists, some moms will shame you into feeling like such a horrible, abject failure that you will do almost anything to prove you are cool like them. I quickly found out how susceptible I was to this mommy peer-pressure when I overheard a few veteran moms talking about all of the activities their kids were involved in. It was staggering! From Suzuki music lessons to acting seminars to sports, these ladies had every waking minute of their kids’ lives scheduled ... and their tots were still in diapers! So, like an insecure lemming, I immediately signed my son up for t-ball. It was my ‘gateway’ sport.

Atmyson’s firstpractice, itquicklybecamecleartomethat thetitle‘Organized Sports’ was a misnomer – especially when describing activities for children aged 5 to 7. There is not one single thing organized about it! Imagine, if you will, gathering 15-20 elderly Alzheimer'spatients. Place them in a vast, open space. Then shout out confusing directions using words they won't understand like "goal line" and "foul". Only then would you fully appreciate the insanity of youth athletics. AndhaveImentionedtheparents?

Those little league ladies BRING IT! From fancy lawn chairs, monogrammed sports bottles and hand-held miniature electric fans, to the million-dollar professional cleats their children were wearing. Their

kids even had duffle bags filled with extra bats, balls and Emu-oiled gloves.EMU!Yes,itappearedIwastheBadNewsBearstotheirYankees, but I was betting like Pete Rose that my son’s raw talent would put them all to shame. Batter up!

Based on the heavy hitters I witnessed, I could tell some of these kids had played baseball before... like in the World Series. Yet, happily, when itcamemyson’sturntohittheball,hedidprettywell.Anicegrounder.However, his joy at contact must have interfered with his sense of direction, because my little Babe Ruth ran straight for the base. Third base.Alloftheotherparentssnickeredandstaredatmewiththatjudgy-judge look reserved solely for mothers. You know the one. Yet, their mockery seemed to heighten in me some weird sense of competitiveness. So I transfixed my eyes on my son and tried to WILL him to be more awesome than every other kid on the team as he ran to the outfield. The outfield: teeming with flowers and bugs and dirt. Yup, there was my child, bent at the knees, picking dandelions, digging for worms and chasing butterflies – entirely unconcerned by the barrage of balls flying past him. Thankfully, a bunch of other kids were doing the same thing and God bless little Sarah – she checked-out entirely and lay on the grass to get a better view of the clouds.

Because of that first practice, I vowed to get my man up to speed. Surely, in three weeks, coupled with weeknight team practices, everything would

Which brings me to another word: vengeance. Turns out, my evil plot was squashed like a marshmallowbyaweevoiceofreason.Asitwasexplained to me by my son in between backyard fielding drills, he really didn't like baseball at all. "Yousee,Mom,there'sthesun. It'sreallyhot!Andstanding in the middle of a field. With the sun. It's awful.CanIplaysoccerinstead?"

So I signed him up for soccer.

My little Pele' was ready toRAWK!However, forsomereason, thekidsuniforms were ordered late so the coach handed them out mere minutes before the game. I had my man suit up in the car. What emerged from the backseat was bordering on the obscene. It turns out the sizing chart for the uniforms was drastically wrong. So askew it was from true sizing that my son was forced to play his first game in what amounted to go-go shorts and a tankini. On the upside, he scored a goal that day. OK, it was kicked into the other team’s net ... but technically, it was stillagoal.Andmysonwashappy.AndIwashappy. Ironically, not because I proved to some other woman that my child was ‘athletic’ or in a gazillion activities, but because my son was having a blast. The smile on his face said it all.

Later, as we called grandparents, uncles and aunts, recanting every toe-touch to the errant goal, all I could do was beam with pride. This was my child. This was my life. Not one thing about it was even in the general vicinity of organized, yet all of it was perfectly played. Yes, we are a team.

Eat Like a Dinosaur: Recipe and Guidebook for Gluten-Free Kids Written by The Paleo Parents

Reviewed by: Children’s Services, Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Library

Getting away from processed foods and getting back to basics and cooking with real food is important to a family’s health and well-being. To help families improve their diet, the Paleo Parents (Stacy and Matt) recently wrote Eat Like a Dinosaur: Recipe and Guidebook for Gluten-Free Kids.

People on the Paleo Diet eat meats, fruits, vegetables and nuts. This book explains the health benefits for families and provides tasty kid-approved recipes that are free of grains, dairy, soy and refined sugar. Each recipe is gluten-free and visually marked if it includes any of the top eight allergens. Recipes include everything from spaghetti and meatballs, bacon burgers and sweet potato fries to chocolate milkshakes and mini-nut butter cups – all made without processed foods.

In addition, the book includes an illustrated children’s story describing the diet and the logic in making these food choices.

After the Paleo Parents adopted the Paleo Diet, they lost over 200 pounds in a little more than a year and several of the health problems (allergies, attention deficits and digestive issues) experienced by the entire family disappeared.

The book is available at the downtown Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library, but can be sent to the Bittersweet Branch Library or the Harris Branch Library by request.

The Hunger Games By Suzanne Collins

Reviewed By: Chloe H.

Twenty-four tributes enter the Hunger Games every year – ¬one boy and one girl from each district. These twenty-four tributes fight to the death in an arena created by the Gamemakers.

Katniss Everdeen was a normal sixteen-year-old girl in District Twelve, determined to keep her mother and sister alive by hunting animals in the woods. When her younger sister, Prim, was drawn to be the girl tribute for District Twelve in the next Hunger Games, Katniss volunteered to take her place. Now Katniss has to go into an arena and survive without being killed by any of the other tributes. To do this, she has to kill the other tributes. There’s just one problem: everyone believes she and the boy from her district, Peeta Melark, are in love… which means she has to act the part.

To find out what happens to Peeta and Katniss, you’ll have to read The Hunger Games. If you have already seen the movie, you should also read the book. There are a lot of differences between the movie and the book such as Katniss saying goodbye to Peeta’s family and her friend Madge before she enters the Games. It’s a great action and adventure book!

My name is Chloe. I am in 8th grade at Edwardsburg Middle School. I play percussion and love to sing. I also love reading books. Some of my favorite books include The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling.

Important Skin Facts you Must Know

We often neglect the things which are most important to us. Your skin is no different. It is the largest organ of the body and the most outwardly visible part of us. That is why it is important to take simple steps to look our best and invest in ourselves. Not many people know why sunscreen, soaps and water can change our skin.

It is important to understand that the sun is actively changing our skin all year long. We must protect it to reduce aging spots, wrinkles, and rough texture and to prevent skin cancer. Using lotions, creams and make-up with proper Ultraviolet (UV) protection can help fight off sun damage. “The best sunscreen ingredients include those which block UVA and UVB rays,” recommends board-certified dermatologist Dr. Roger Moore. As a skin cancer specialist, he explains that there are four ingredients which block UV rays the best: Parsol 1789, Meroxyl, Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. He recommends Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide as they are physical blockers which means they bounce the rays off the skin rather than absorbing them.

Water can play a role in our appearance, too. Though many enjoy a hot, steamy shower, that relaxed feeling comes at a cost to the skin. Heat can damage the outer layer of the skin, preventing it from holding moisture like it normally should. This leads to a loss of our protective barrier and gives us more dry, rough and scaling skin. Using lukewarm water helps to maintain skin integrity. In addition, soaps meant to clean will strip away small amounts of the skin barrier, so limiting soap to the areas such as underarms, groin, hands and feet is often best. The finishing touch is to apply a heavy cream. Creams trap moisture better than lotions. “When we pat dry and apply a heavy cream, we help our skin health and hydration,” says Dr. Moore.

As we learn to take care of our skin, it is important to remember that skin cancer is the leading cancer in America today. Some estimate that one in three people will get skin cancer. Learn the warning signs of skin cancer, as your awareness could be lifesaving. If you notice a new or changing growth or spot on your skin, get it checked out by a board certified dermatologist. No other doctor has as much training in the skin.

This educational piece was sponsored by Dr. Roger Moore, a Board-Certified Dermatologist and the founder of DermacenterMD.

He is one of the area’s leaders in skin care and skin cancer as well as a strong advocate for patient education. Dr. Moore performs the highly-acclaimed method of skin cancer removal “Mohs Micrographic Surgery”. You may learn more about Dr. Moore and skin health by visiting www.DermacenterMD.com or calling his office at 574.522.0265.

His office does not require a doctor referral and he is accepting new patients.

Everyone has one: an area of the body that no diet or exercise routine has been able to tame, and that taunts you

day after day. For some women, it’s a post-baby or menopause abdomen; others may have great legs—except for the “saddlebags” that a million leg lifts haven’t slimmed. For men, it’s most often their love handles. Not to worry, says Dr. Christopher Peers, one of the first surgeons in the country to be

trained and use a revolutionary 3rd generation new technology called SmartWaterLipo®. In just one treatment, Dr. Peers can instantly

remove unwanted fat from targeted areas on the body.

Liposuction has been around since the 1970s. Traditional liposuction was a brutal process done under general anesthetic with varying degrees of success. Lumps and uneven contours were common.A few years ago, two new technologies were introduced in this

country: laser and ultrasound assisted liposuction. Performed with just local

anesthetic, a skilled doctor could produce results far superior with less pain, less downtime, less bruising and better results than the old method. Both methods had

their advantages and disadvantages.

Announcing: 3rd Generation Liposuction Contouring With Very Little Pain: SmartWaterLipo™

Dr. Peers combines the revolutionary 3rd generation water liposuction with Smart Lipo in a procedure he calls SmartWaterLipo™.

“The only thing the patients feel is a small pin prick (similar to being numbed by a dentist) when the local anesthetic is applied. The cannula we use has an opening for the water jet spray and a second one for suctioning. We gently break the fat apart and suction it out simultaneously. It is the gentlest liposuction available.

And unlike other procedures, there are no unattractive pockets of skin or bumps left afterwards. We finish with Smart Lipo to tighten and tone the skin.

Water assisted liposuction produces no heat and because of the suctioning process, most of the fluid that’s left in the body flushes within days, not months. “That’s a huge benefit for my patients,” says Dr. Peers. “I am better able to finesse the contouring and the results become visible sooner. My patients love it.”

general anesthesia or hospital/surgery center expenses.

A Noticeable ResultRuth Bigler was a 57 year old mother of 2 preparing for her daughter’s upcoming wedding when she decided to have liposuction.

“I had been going to the gym for 2 years but still carried the belly fat. When I heard about Smart Lipo I did 10 months of research to find out if it was worth it and what doctor was the best one to perform the surgery should I choose to go ahead with the procedure. In the end, I chose Dr. Peers from Goshen, Indiana because of his level of experience combined with the fact that I could personally speak with 3 of his patients who had nothing but glowing comments," explains Bigler. “It was a nice bonus that his prices are very competitive.”

“I only wished I had done it sooner. But now that I’ve had it done once and see how easy it is, I am definitely planning to have Dr. Peers finish my transformation with his new SmartWaterLipo™”.

In the NewsDr. Peers, a native of Toronto who has received training from some of the best schools in the world—from Indiana to Paris, France—received his surgical board certification in 1987 and has practiced in Goshen, IN, for the majority of his career.

Not practicing in an area of the country known for their hotbed of innovation and technology, this gentle doctor’s success caught the eye of the network news stations anyway and he was contacted about performing the procedure in front of live cameras. It was after his TV debut that word about him spread and overnight he became a phenomenon and is now one of the country’s most experienced Lipo surgeons.

So What Does SmartWaterLipo™ Cost?Cost varies depending on how much fat you have to be removed. The more fat, the longer the surgery, the more the cost. But the good news is, at $3,200 for one area, it is far less than the traditional method that required general anesthesia in a hospital surgery room and weeks off of work for recovery!

For a free Smart Water Lipo™ or liquid facelift consultation, call Dr. Peer’s office at 574-533-9000. 2012 S. Main Street, Goshen, IN 46526

Other new trends in cosmetic proceduresSculptra® - the 20 minute faceliftAs the population ages and continues to demand non-invasive procedures to help keep them looking as fresh as possible, Dr. Peers continues to add the “best-in-class” procedures to his practice. One of those procedures is the use of Sculptra®. Not a filler like Juvederm® and Radiesse® or a muscle relaxer like Botox® to smooth out wrinkles, Sculptra® helps restore lost collagen, naturally, and over a period of 3-5 treatments. The results last up to 2 years and are subtle, but dramatic.

Dr. Peers also combines Sculptra® with skin resurfacing, Botox® and in some cases Juvederm® or Radiesse® for his trademarked Ultimate Liquid Facelift™. While he can’t literally turn back the clock, you might think otherwise when you look into the mirror.

MAKE-UP TIPS:Mascara is the most dangerous piece of make-up to hang onto for long stretches of time because of bacteria. NEVER use mascara after four months – buy a new one!

Putting a tiny bit of white or light eyeshadow right where the upper and lower lids meet in the inside corner will brighten up your eyes like you wouldn’t believe.A big blush brush will make for a very sheer covering – for darker blush and better coverage, try a smaller brush.

Lipstick will last longer if you use lipliner on your entire lip before putting lipstick on. It binds to the liner, which binds better to the lip than lipstick does. You can still use the last remnants of lipstick inside the tube by using a Qtip and mixing with gloss.

Mother’s Day!

Pregnancy MYTH: You should eat three

healthy meals a day.

Pregnancy FACT: You should be eating every 2-3 hours. It helps to keep your blood sugar constant which is good for you and the baby. Yes, that is eating frequently, but they should be small meals. You should only add about 300 calories to your normal diet when you are expecting.

Picking the right bed for your child:First, consider your child’s room size. If you have room to accommodate a full- or queen-size bed, go ahead – you will be happy you did later. If a twin is a better fit, consider a trundle for underneath; it’s always nice to have an extra bed for sleepovers or guests. Next, determine what additional pieces (dresser, nightstand, bookcases, etc.) you will need. When it comes to finishes, the rule of thumb in design is to never mix more than three finishes. It is not necessary to choose the same finish for all pieces, so have some fun!
