To develop an on-line platform to facilitate coordination and
communication among internal stakeholders for an effective outage
planning
6. Project Descriptions:
The proposed project addresses the operation and maintenance issues
of managing transmission network.
There are numerous work orders generated in each year end for
meeting the maintenance work requirement of various transmission
plant equipment (i.e. Switchgear or Transformer) in the next years.
While there are also numerous circuit outages required, for example,
for cutting in new plant equipment or transmission substations in
response to the social development.
It takes time to coordinate and review the above-mentioned
maintenance work and outages in view of the high quantity with
consideration on manpower resources and network constraints. More
importantly, these works are handled by various engineering teams,
which complexifies the coordination process.
The proposed project aims to develop an integrated platform to
facilitate the coordination process.
7. Project Deliverables:
An integrated on-line centralized platform to facilitate inputs and
changes of maintenance works schedule and outages program by all
the internal stakeholders.

vulnerable part to external interference. To meet the increasing customer
expectation on supply reliability and power quality, this project is to devise
practical suggestion on 11kV overhead line network of East & West Region
to improve the long term performance on this aspect.

Impact of PV System in Distribution System
5. Business Objective(s):
To identify possible challenges encountered with high PV system
penetration.
To determine technical limits in different aspects of the Distribution
System, i.e. voltage-rise limit, harmonics, etc.

in distribution system
To be familiar with a computer software program for voltage control

system connected to CLP’s network
To provide recommendations on the limit of PV system connected to
CLP’s distribution system.
6. Project Descriptions:
The Hong Kong Government is introducing new incentive schemes in the
Scheme of Control with the two power companies to encourage the grid
connection of Renewable Energy System (RES). PV system is the one of the
most viable RES in Hong Kong and it is expected that more and more PV
systems will be connected to CLP’s grid. There will be several technical
issue encountered with high RES penetration in CLP’s network, such as
voltage fluctuation in feeder including voltage rise or fall and unbalanced
voltage, power quality issue such as flicker and harmonics that may affect
the supply reliability and security of the CLP’s distribution system. This
project aims to study the possible impact of large amount of PV system
connected to CLP’s network and identify the PV system penetration limit.
By using appropriate computer simulation tool, some typical models could
be developed to analyse the power quality impacts in the CLP’s network
for voltage control study.

Developing the condition monitoring and consolidation of life assessment
reports of power transformers in power generation plant is essential.
Many of the transformers in GBG already reached/ exceeded the half
design life. As such, GBG’s power transformers are gradually having their
mid-life life assessment and refurbishment, including the generator
transformers, station transformers and unit transformers.

Castle Peak 400 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) – Partial discharge and bellow deflection monitoring and studies Black Point 400 kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Generator Circuit Breaker (GCB) – refurbishment
5. Business Objective(s):
Maintain the reliability and availability of Castle Peak and Black Point
400 kV GIS, with the extension of the service life by carrying out
refurbishment
Identify the potential faults, long-term solutions and enhancement of
condition monitoring equipment of the 400 kV GIS in order to obtain
early warning before equipment failure
Maintain the reliability and availability of Black Point GCB and extend
the service life by carrying out refurbishment
6. Project Descriptions:
The 400 kV Substation at Castle Peak Power Station (CPPS) and Black Point Power Station (BPPS) were commissioned on 1981 and 1995 respectively. They have reached the end or middle of design life. The purpose of the refurbishment is to maintain the reliability and availability and extend the service life of these GIS. Moreover, there are lots of partial discharge signals and bellow deflections identified. Further in-depth studies of these defects and identify the long-term solutions. The Generator Circuit Breaker (GCB) at BPPS were put in services from 1996 to 2006, they have been in services for more than 10 years. According to the recommendation of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), the GCB should be overhauled and inspected in every 10 years, in order to maintain the reliability and availability of the GCB

PQ mitigation measures to customers.
6. Project Descriptions:
Project 1 is to evaluate and test the different types of PQ measurement
devices and PQ/voltage dip ride-through devices
Project 2 is to participate in the design and implementation work of PQ
interactive demonstration units which help educate the public about
the PQ issues and relevant mitigation measures.
7. Project Deliverables:
By end of the internship program, all evaluation tests on voltage dip
ride-through devices and PQ demonstration units shall be completed
with test reports and real objects respectively for submission to
his/her supervisor.

6. Project
Descriptions:
Overcurrent & Earth Fault Protection (OCEF) is widely adopted in power
industries to detect abnormal conditions in power system and isolate the
faulty section in order to minimize system disruption due to the fault. This
is achieved by OCEF protection co-ordination, which requires calculation of
protection relay settings in terms of both current and time to operate the
protection relay nearest to fault first. To support and facilitate the co-
ordination, an OCEF co-ordination program was developed to simulate real
system situations in order to determine OCEF protection settings in power
system. The project covers review on existing co-ordination program and
develops an advanced program.

Deliverables:
Review and develop Overcurrent & Earth Fault Protection (OCEF) Co-
ordination Program and conduct OCEF grading study to achieve proper
discrimination in power system. The project covers study on existing OCEF
protection relays and their settings in power system, and review and
enhancement of program for OCEF co-ordination by use of computer tools
and programs. The project also covers use of the enhanced program to
simulate real situations during normal and fault conditions in power
system to perform OCEF co-ordination study in order to determine
protection relay settings.

6. Project Descriptions:
The Distribution Management System (DMS) is a computer system used by
control engineers to remotely monitor and control CLPP’s 11kV
distribution network. DMS is an essential tool to ensure CLPP’s high supply
reliability of 99.999%. It will be upgraded in Q1-2018 with replaced
hardware and updated application software.
The usage of the latest application software in DMS will open up new
potential and opportunity for new application. The Sandwich Intern will
handle software development of small projects that enrich DMS
functionalities.
The Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) is the next
generation of computer platform that will position CLPP to meet future
challenges, including digital transformation, smart metering, demand
response (DRMS), distributed energy resources management (DERMS),
mobile workforce management, situational awareness, etc. The Sandwich
Intern will assist the ADMS Study to evaluate various technology options
and associated benefits, thus formulating the approach to migrate DMS to
ADMS.

This project is different from traditional research projects. It is all about to
bring innovation to the world of electrical engineering knowledge that
most CLP colleagues have already acquired.
To start with, the project will first establish an inventory of innovative
ideas using technology on grid operations in smart ways via various
research means such as desktop, research papers, vendor information,
conference participations, etc.
The inventory list will be further reviewed and assessed with the
stakeholders with due considerations on the time and resources
constraints before turning to PoC projects.
Upon the completion of the selected PoC projects, formal evaluation in
terms of technical feasibility, operational practicality, and benefits
realization shall be performed prior to put forward the justification of full
scale implementation, if any.
