The singular history of Lake Vassivire, the striking character of this artificial island's landscape, the cultural assets of the Limousin Region and the superb renovation of this new space combine to provide a remarkable setting for artists and researchers, for reflection and experimentation. The Castle home to this art and research residency programme organised by the art centre as a complement to the exhibitions and the Sculpture Wood is intended to foster inspiration and the shaping of projects in a time frame marked by shifting seasons and climates. Artists and researchers seeking a residency are invited to submit a research and creation project linked to the landscape of Vassivire in its aesthetic scope as well as in its social and environmental history (rurality, agricultural work, country planning, ecology, lifestyles and customs)

Residencies are granted for seasons of four months (16 weeks). Each season is open to three residents who are free to work together should they so desire. The residencies are open to three artists and/or researchers applying separately or as a group in the following domains:

Visual arts: Professional visual artists, for a research and experimentation project preparatory to an exhibition in another venue, or wishing to explore new work methods and emphases.

Writing: Writers, anthropologists, art critics, storytellers, philosophers, film directors, etc. are invited to apply with an experimentally-inflected writing and research project possibly in association with a publisher, university, theatre, festival, etc.

Other disciplines: Landscapers, ethnobotanists, architects, designers, graphic designers,

choreographers, etc. are invited to apply with a research and creation project, possibly as part of a coproduction with another cultural body, university, art school, etc.

In the course of the season residents will be asked to work with the Art Centre team on ways and means of involving the public: studio open days, talks, readings, performances, educational events, etc. Terms and conditions Accommodation: Each resident is provided with furnished accommodation in the Castle. There are three separate facilities with large beds, one of which can house a family:

Each accommodation unit includes a fully equipped kitchen and a bathroom/toilet. Sheets, towels and crockery are provided. Heating is geothermal and there is a shared laundry.

    Apartment: 67.9 sq. metres

    Studios 1 & 2: 30 m2 and 28.2 sq. metres

Workspaces: Residents share open-plan work areas totalling 192 sq. metres on several different levels in the Castle, with heating, phone and Internet connection. Architect-designed more as research and inspiration spaces than as actual artists' studios, these areas offer no audiovisual equipment or technical tools. According to his availability, the installation manager can offer technical support to residents.

Residence allowance: Each resident receives living expenses of 2000 euros taxes included. His or her presence is not required full time during the 4 months of the season, but the full amount on expenses can only be paid if the resident is present for a minimum of 60 days, continuously or otherwise. In addition the Art Centre covers the cost of one return trip between the resident's home and Vassiviere island up to a total amount of 300 euros. Support for residents: The Art Centre helps residents in their projects and in getting acquainted with the local area and its people. It provides intellectual and logistical backup via the skills of its team and its equipment. In addition the Art Centre can bring a production fee of maximum 500 euros by project which may be used before the end of the residency to finance the project for which the artist/researcher has been selected. Getting there: The candidates should not fear isolation. Nearest station (13 km): Eymoutiers-Vassivire. Airport: Limoges (70 km). Vassivire Island (70 hectares) is set in a 1000-hectare artificial lake, 700 metres above sea level on the Millevaches Plateau, in the Limousin Region. At the convergence of the Haute-Vienne and Creuse dpartements, it is part of the Beaumont-du-Lac municipality, 60 km from Limoges. Transport: A driving licence is a major asset. The Art Centre provides a car for residents to share, together and the team of the Ciap, with a flat-rate contribution towards gasoline expenses (1 full by month).
