Buon Tempo Upcoming Dinners Transfiguration Parish Hall

All parishioners are invited to the following dinners: May 5th — Pasta Pesto/Chicken If you are interested in attending, please call the Dinner Line, 510-483-6929. Reservations must be made by the Friday before the dinner.

As we have done in the past, our Lent is also an in-vitation to our children to share their pennies with the poor. We ask our children to come up and drop their donation in the “Pennies for the Poor” jar when the ushers are taking up the collection for the community at large.

THIRST Each time today’s Gospel story is read, I can’t help but think of the many television commercials I’ve seen depicting perspiring athletes lifting a bever-age to their lips while the scorching sun beats down on them. Our culture has definite ideas about how to quench thirst. Today, those ideas are turned upside down. The Samaritan woman operates, initially, on the TV commercial level. She asks Jesus for the flow-ing water so that she will not have to keep coming to the well. Jesus then talks about what real thirst is, and how he, and he alone, can quench that thirst. Lent calls us to find those places deep within ourselves where we thirst. In our thirst, as did the Israelites, we cry out to God asking for springs of living water. Deep down we know that only the Lord can satisfy these thirsts. —Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Reminder

There will be Stations of the Cross every Friday night at 7:30 p.m. during Lent.

LAUDATO SI’ OF THE HOLY FATHER FRANCIS

ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

DECLINE IN THE QUALITY OF HUMAN LIFE AND THE BREAKDOWN OF SOCIETY

#44 Nowadays, for example, we are conscious of the disproportionate and unruly growth of many cities, which have become unhealthy to live in, not only because of pollution caused by toxic emissions but also as a result of urban chaos, poor transportation, and visual pollution and noise. Many cities are huge, inefficient structures, exces-sively wasteful of energy and water. Neighbourhoods, even those recently built, are congested, chaotic and lack-ing in sufficient green space. We were not meant to be inundated by cement, asphalt, glass and metal, and de-prived of physical contact with nature. Fr. Terry’s Remarks: We love the cities and at the same time we view them as monstrosities but with our ever expanding world popula-tion they are necessities. For many reasons!!! What we must do is mitigate their blight and turn them into not just homes, workplaces, entertainment venues and so many other necessary and helpful additions to our lives. We must turn them and construct in ways that their baleful effects on our environment are transformed, so that they help Mother Nature and not violate Her so badly. To do that we have to be ready to radically change our habits, to make sacrifices and remember the old adage we learned as kids; ''You should love your neighbor as yourself.'' Oh; it is so appealing, but in practice it is very, very hard.

Pause a minute … One of the worst days so far for Coronavirus was the 10th of February. On that day, 108 persons in CHINA died of Coronavirus. BUT, on the same day … 26,283 people died of Cancer 24,641 people died of Heart Disease 4,300 people died of Diabetes And on that day, Suicide, unfortunately, took more lives than the virus did, by 28 times. Moreover, Mosquitoes kill 2,740 people every day, HUMANS kill 1,300 fellow human every day and Snakes kill 137 people every day.
