Tiny Tickets = Tremendous Treasure What is a Tiny Ticket??? And why would anyone

want them??? MANY of you have been so faithful to our project —- Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Many of you may not know any-thing about TINY TICKETS…Well……Tiny Tickets are those BART tickets, often discarded or left in pockets or drawers, which have tiny bits of value left on them that could be turned into cash. The Tiny Tickets Program allows these resources to provide needed support to nonprofit groups like FESCO. Our Confirmation Program is committed to help. There is a Treasure Chest in the vestibule of the church, please drop your Tiny Tickets in the chest and we will transport them to the FESCO Offices. Thank you in advance for your kind generosi-ty to our brothers and sisters in need.

are eligible. Parents who would like their children to serve at the altar may email Alicia Antonio at:

[email protected]. “When you take part in the liturgy by carrying out your altar service, you offer a witness to all. Your absorption, the devo-tion that wells up from your heart and is expressed in ges-tures, in song, in the responses: if you do it correctly and not absent-mindedly, then in a certain way your witness is one that moves people,” (Pope Benedict XVI, 2006).

Thank you for advertising in our bulletin. We appreciate your support!

THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Rus-sians have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday’s Gospel: “Bread is the beginning of everything.” Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread—too late for life itself. This great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the strength of the heaven sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God. In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his flesh as life for the world. “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#93 No to spiritual worldliness Spiritual worldliness, which hides behind the appearance of piety and even love for the Church, consists in seeking not the Lord’s glory but human glory and personal well-being. It is what the Lord reprimanded the Pharisees for: “How can you believe, who receive glory from one an-other and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?” (Jn 5:44). It is a subtle way of seeking one’s “own interests, not those of Jesus Christ” (Phil 2:21). It takes on many forms, depending on the kinds of persons and groups into which it seeps. Since it is based on carefully cultivated appearances, it is not always linked to outward sin; from without, everything appears as it should be. But if it were to seep into the Church, “it would be infinitely more disastrous than any other worldliness which is simp-ly moral”.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks— This week we see the power of the story in Genesis, when God made us in his own image and likeness. It means that we are naturally spiritu-al. That's why we have so many people saying these days: '' I'm spiritual but I don't belong to any religion or attend a church, I don't need them.'' What Pope Francis is telling us is that; this attitude is more dangerous than moral fail-ures. When we sin or have weaknesses, we are more willing to turn to God or a community. We are more will-ing to admit we need help. We are more able to be com-passionate to others' needs. We are more ready to seek Divine help. But wrapping yourself in your own spiritual cocoon severs you from both your interconnectedness with the Divine and the human. You can be a good func-tioning being but as Jesus reminds the Pharisees again and again about their spiritual hollowness: ''You guys are so entangled in your own spirituality that you have no compassion or insight into others.'' Now you see why Je-sus was so close to sinners, they felt their need for God, grace and their fellow men and women. This is why in our Church we must never, never lose our sense of pro-found need for God and our closeness to our brothers and sisters.
