Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

It’s the time of year when many of us

go on vacation, perhaps to visit places

we’ve never been before. In today’s

Gospel, Jesus sends his disciples to

travel to places he intended to visit. But it’s not a va-

cation; they are working on building up the kingdom of

God. We are called to carry on that mission as well.

May the nourishment we receive in the Eucharist today

lead us to share Christ’s presence in our travels near

Introduction to the Liturgy of the Word

Every Mass begins and ends with the sign of the cross.

It is the most prominent sign of our identity as Chris-

tians. Saint Paul boasts in it, for it has transformed us

all. The disciples bear it, sent out as lambs among

wolves. The cross is our reminder that we should ex-

pect to suffer. But it is also a reminder of our redemp-

tion. Isaiah sings of the return to Jerusalem from exile,

a redemption for Israel. Let us note the power of the

cross as we listen to today’s readings.

How can I share Christ’s peace with others? How can I

respond when it is not reciprocated?

Introducción a la Liturgia de la Palabra

Cada Misa comienza y termina con la señal de la cruz.

Éste es el signo más prominente de nuestra identifica-

ción Cristiana. San Pablo se gloría en la cruz, pues ella

nos ha transformado a todos. Los discípulos cargan la

suya cuando son enviados como corderos en medio de

lobos. La cruz nos recuerda que hemos de sufrir, pero

también nos recuerda nuestra redención. Isaías canta

acerca del regreso a Jerusalén después del exilio, lo

cual fue una redención para Israel. Pongamos atención

al poder de la cruz cuando escuchemos las lecturas de

hoy.

¿Cómo puedo compartir la paz de Cristo con los dé-

mas? ¿De qué manera puedo responder cuando esa

paz no se reciproca?

We remind all of the encouragement of our Holy Fa-

ther to understand that although the summer brings

warm and humid weather, our attire for attending Mass

should be respectful, whether it be the weekend or even

during the week. If our attire is possible appropriate

for the beach, it is probably not appropriate for church.

This simple consideration will help us all a great deal.
