From the pastor… Life in the World and the Church seems to be temporarily on hold. Because of a special situation, this column had to be written on Monday, May 18th. We still were unaware when we would be legally able to celebrated First Communion, Confirma-tion and the conferral of the Sacraments of Initiation on the RCIA Candidates. Confirmation can only be planned with the permis-sion and in conjunction with the Office of the Bishop. People can come to church on their on freewill but we cannot require the RCIA Candidates and the First Holy Communion Children to be here, if the dates do not comply with the law of the State of North Carolina. These celebrations will be scheduled as soon as possi-ble. All will be advised with sufficient notice. Pentecost – is the feast commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, fifty days after Easter. Annually the Church celebrates the memory of the Pentecost event as the be-ginning of the new “age of the Church”, when Christ lives and acts in and with his Church. In today’s Gospel, Jesus breathes his re-creating Spirit on the disciples, shows them his wounds, then sends them forth to love as he loved, to forgive and reconcile. The fruits of the Spirit are per fections that the Holy Spir it forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The Church lists twelve of them: “charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, good-ness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self control, and chastity.” (#1832 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church) The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. (# 1831 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church) Just as our Lord sends the Disciples in today’s Gospel, so too, we are sent. The word “Mass” comes from the closing words of the Latin Liturgy “Ete Missa Est” = “Go, you are sent.” God knows well that in the world in which we live, we will need the gifts and the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Would there be any evidence to others that we have received the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation? A little exercise with the aforementioned gifts and fruits would help to develop our spiritual strength. Next Sunday is the Feast of The Most Holy Trinity. The Readings at Mass will be Exodus 34:4-6, 8-9, 2 Corinthians 13:11-13, Gospel John 3:16-18. While our Liturgical Schedule now continues as normal – the degree of our celebrations depends on the response of you, the People of God. Beginning in June, we will take advantage of the services of the scheduled Altar Servers, Lectors, and Extra-Ordinary Ministers of the Eucharist (as needed). We’ll have to see the will of the Choir Members, Ushers, etc. None of these ministries existed at the First Mass, the Last Supper. If people don’t show up, we will play with the cards we are dealt in order to glorify the Lord. June 5th is the 1st Friday of the Month. Mass will be cele-brated at 9 a.m... Traditionally, we don’t have Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament during the summer months of June, July and August. The 1st Saturday of the Month is June 6th. While I may be alone, you are welcome to join me in praying the rosary at 8:40 a.m. followed by the 9 a.m. Mass. The rosary will be prayed for you, the parishioners. Vacation Bible School – will be scheduled some time during the summer and as soon as it is evident, when it will be safe and most helpful to God’s children. Thanks for your generosity. Dur ing these difficult eco-nomic times, so many of you continue to forward your contri-butions to your parish church, towards our Forward With Christ Building Campaign, but especially to feed the poor. Your generosity truly is and inspiration. Thank you.
