From the pastor.. Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Opioid Epidemic? – “Brothers and Sisters: You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit…If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies, through his Spirit that dwells in you.” (Romans 8:9-13 – today’s 2nd reading) There are addictions to drugs, alcohol, gambling, pornography and sex, gossip, etc., etc., etc. The only addiction we really need is addic-tion to the mercy of God until our dying breath. Tend to the Spir-it. Live for the Lord. On July 9th, 2013, I ar r ived here as your pastor . I thank God for these four years and you for putting up with me. I pray that God will grant me another 8 years and then I will retire at the age of 70. Thanks again. There will be no daily Mass this week, Monday through Fr i-day. I will be away and apologize for any inconvenience. With the shortage of vocations, it is difficult to find replacements. Please continue to pray for an increase in religious vocations. Next Sunday is the 15 Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Read-ings at Mass will be taken from: Isaiah 55: 10-11, Romans 8: 18-23, Matthew 13: 1-23 (short form 13:1-9). Broad Street Burger is located at 111 East Broad Street and is hosting a fundraiser for our Forward With Christ initiative this Monday, July 10th from 5 – 9 p.m. The restaurant will give us 10% of purchases (except for alcohol sales) for those who indi-cate that they are there for the St. Philip fundraiser. Please come out and support our effort. Thanks. There will be a General Fund Raising Meeting this Wednesday, July 12 at 6:30 p.m. There will not be a Knights of Columbus meeting this week. Did you see our Banner over the street and in front of the Wells Fargo Bank at 221 East Broad Street? It is advertising our Christmas in July Craft Fair Forward With Christ fundraiser on Saturday, July 29th. The banner will be moved to another location, but the Craft Fair will remain right here in our Social Hall from the early morning until 3 p.m. Please come by and support our parish and the many vendors. Thanks again. Are you interested or curious about possibly becoming a Catholic? Now is the time to call me (Fr . Kessler – 704-681-4860) so as to inquire about the RCIA Class which will be form-ing at the end of August. I will meet with you personally and privately to discuss your questions, etc. Don’t be bashful nor wait until the last minute. Forward With Christ update – So far we have $2,014,195.88 in the bank and so we are only $485,804.12 short of the 2.5 million dollar mark. We still have a long way to go. Thanks so much for your support and generosity. We are also happy to report the negative results from two tests for asbestos in our old rectory and in the building with our social hall, classrooms, etc. These findings will result in considerable savings when the day comes to raze the buildings. Make a Difference for a child – you can be a volunteer as a child’s advocate in court and part of Guardian Ad Litem. Find and take a brochure located at the bookcase in the gathering space.

Mrs. Mary Brown: If you need to contact Mrs. Brown, Faith Formation Director, please call or text 704-929-0152 or email her at [email protected] or if you need to contact Mrs. Norma Echevarria please call the office at 704-872-2579 or email her at [email protected]. Registration forms for 2017-2018 have been handed out to all current Faith Formation students. If you did not get one, please stop by the Faith Formation office. They are located next to the Faith Formation Office door on orange paper. All forms need to be returned to the faith Formation office by Aug 1st, 2017 to avoid a $10 late fee. Students who plan on making their Confirmation and First Communion need 2 years of Faith Formation classes prior to those sacrament and must attend at least 25 Masses during each of the school years. It’s not too early to think about volunteering for Faith For-mation for the 2017-2018 School Year. The new Faith and Life series is terrific. All lessons are planned and related work-sheets are always prepared often with a craft that corresponds with that week’s lesson. Please prayerfully consider if God is calling you to volunteer for Faith Formation. The future of St. Philip’s is a direct result of how well we prepare our young people. It’s not always easy, but it is always worthwhile. What would happen to the Catholic Faith if there were no Faith For-mation teachers to pass it on???? Please contact Mary Brown if you think you may be interested and we can talk.
