(Continued on page 3)

Dear Parishioners,Recently, I had reason to recall a bulletin letter I wrote

three and a half months after arriving here as pastor in 2016. In that September letter I quoted from a book, then in draft form, by Christopher Lowney (author of among others, Heroic Leadership, Heroic Living, and Pope Fran-cis: Why He Leads the Way He Leads). That book from which I quoted has now been published under the title: Everyone Leads: How to Revitalize the Catholic Church.

What I pointed out from Lowney’s work is that Can-on Law (section 529) indicates pretty much that a priest “ought to know the faithful entrusted to his care, visit families, and share in their cares, anxieties, and griefs; he ought to make special efforts to seek out the poor, the afflicted, the lonely, those exiled from their country and similarly those weighed down by special difficulties.” I then went on to add: How I wish I could? It would truly be a humbling honor and privilege if I could fulfill all that this Canon envisions. Certainly, given the size of our parish with over 2.200 registered families, even if Father Don, Father Jerry and I worked 24/7 that would sadly be impossible.

This understandable human limitation here at St. Igna-tius is among the many reasons why I have been encour-aging us to develop a Pastoral Council that is not purely advisory to the Pastor, but a servant leadership body that is a sort of extension of the pastor vis-à-vis leadership.

Like the Pastor, Pastoral Council members always, and in every instance and circumstance, must consider the good of the entire parish. They are, therefore, not rep-resentatives of a given group or Mass, but commissioned to provide servant leadership through a commitment to the workings of the Holy Spirit in all matters that arise in our parish. Our steady trajectory is to engage in on-going pastoral planning by listening to parishioners, set-ting goals, and developing objectives that can energize our Parish Staff and parishioners. Through prayer, study, listening, openness, and an ongoing commitment to our parish mission, we are committed to arriving at decisions or actions by consensus and not simply out of our own preferences, but that of God’s will. Simply put, consensus means that any one of us may not have initially agreed with a particular decision but can really live with and sup-port it because we are often discerning between two

or more goods. Moreover, we have faith that the Holy Spirit is and will be with us.

As Pastor, of course, I bear the ultimate responsibility for the spiritual and temporal care of the parish. Yet, having a servant-leadership Pastoral Council involved in listening, discerning, and decision making will help us to become a parishioner driven, less clerically driven, type of parish community. I realize this is new territory in a way. I ask your continued prayers for me, our Pastoral Council and the parish as we address the challenges we face as Church.

With hope in our future,Fr. Joe

Joe

You will be working under a Shelter Captain to make the party as special a day as possible for the children and families in your Shelter to remember for a long time to come. You will greet and register your guests, help serve the food for their table, bring them to the multiple exhibits and guest services like salons, enjoy the stage shows with them, help them to experi-ence all the excitement Winter Wonderland has to offer, help every child receive the gift from their wish list and a backpack and then, in the end, help send them off to their buses with many warm memories. It is a long day but well worth it! Age Requirement: 16 years or olderInterested? Email Adam at [email protected].
