Christian Community News (CCN) is published once a month by “Papa’s Pantry”, Inc, a non-profit organization, organized in 1998, that works with families who have experienced a set-back, providing food assistance when food is at risk in the household.

February contributors: Sean Allen, Susan Call, Tim Grady, Maureen Penniman, Robin Porter, and Mary Tucker.

Recognizing that “man does not live by bread alone, but by every word of God,” (Dt 8:3) The Master’s Training Center, the Pantry’s education division, offers mentoring, classes and coaching for all families in the areas of employment strategies, money management, goal setting, time management, com-puter skills, nutrition, organic gardening, & bible studies.

Please consider Papa’s Pantry in your monthly giving. We depend on local financial support to continue to offer stability training and groceries to those in our community. Donations are tax-deductible.

Funds generated by advertising help ongoing programs. The advertisements/classifieds in CCN are meant to promote busi-nesses, services, anything that someone wants to buy, sell, or exchange. Papa’s Pantry in no way represents the quality or trustworthiness of these printed solicitations, so due care is needed when responding to any information presented. Christian Church Directory Listings are free, space available. Christian churches are defined as those who believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and was of virgin birth. He was cruci-fied, died, resurrected, and is now seated at the right hand of God the Father as our Savior, redeemer, and intercessor. Salvation is found through Him.

I am often asked about the significance of the artichoke as the logo for Papa’s Pantry. This February seems like a perfect time to share its significance. The artichoke logo was a gift developed by Jenny Sparks, a graphics arts student at Kennesaw State University during the fall semester of 2008. I was invited to the class; their job was to interview me as

if they were advertising consultants. My role was to fully explain the ministry of Papa’s Pantry and our mission to make a lasting impact in the lives of others. Food assistance is merely the beginning. I also had the opportunity to share stories of special people I had met along the way. Stories from single parents and grandparents who had lost hope. There were others who lost jobs. During this semester, our economy was slipping away to what we now remember as the beginning of this nation’s recession. There are many reasons families find themselves in crisis. Life can be hard at times. Difficul-ties can make people better, or they can make people bitter. At the end of the semester, each student presented 3 or 4 ideas that best matched Papa’s story and focused on our mission. They were all wonderful! The board of directors then had the honor and task to go through each potential logo one at a time. We narrowed it down to two and prayed over them until we unanimously chose our be-loved artichoke. The reason you ask? The artichoke, you see, is made up of many layers. The outside leaves are course and sharp. As you peel away each petal, they become a bit more tender, until you finally reach the heart. People can be like that. Tough on the outside, with a heart that beats and wants to be understood on the inside. It is our mission to reach and touch each heart that comes to Papa’s Pantry! Happy Valentine’s Day~! Lynne

Papa’s Pantry Update

February’s Volunteer of the Month…drum roll please…is…Papa’s Pantry mentor Linda Wilson!

When Linda Wilson was bitten by the travel bug, it bit her hard. Luck-

ily, for Papa’s Pantry, her home base re-mains in Woodstock where she’s mentored

clients as a volunteer for the past four years. Between her volunteer work here and her ‘regular’ job juggling schedules of two energized youth pastors at Hillside United Methodist Church (HUMC), she takes advantage of annual mission trips to remote Hondu-ran villages, and fits in as much world travel as she can muster. “Awareness of Papa’s Pantry’s services is greater now,” Linda commented, “It’s gaining a reputation as a place where churches can send people.” She says she likes the fact that clients get to choose their own groceries, “what they actually will eat,” and that they are offered training opportunities- “Here, they can do more than take a handout.” When she first began, there were only two mentors- Linda and Pantry director Lynne Saunders. Since then, the volunteers have continued to come and the ministry has expanded. ‘The Master’s Training Center’ has added structure to training programs available. Clients and community members take courses on everything from “Employment Strategies” to “Couponing” and have use of the computer lab. Every Tuesday, like clockwork (unless there’s a travel opportunity), Linda arrives to mentor clients at the Pantry. Her friend and fellow HUMC member, Donna DeYoung, also volunteers on the same day, serving as her partner and pantry attendant. They’ve been close friends for more than 12 years and have contin-ued to meet each Friday morning for breakfast over that time. “It’s a good way to get a perspective on the rest of the world,” Linda remarked about volunteering at Papa’s Pantry. “It gives you a way to see what other people go through.” Linda’s annual trips to Honduras have meant working with locals in LaFuente to do projects like roofing and building latrines. There, she says they use cement mixed with materials like sand and mud from the creek and sticks gathered from the surrounding area. Everything is done by hand with simple tools like shovels. LaFuente is the third village to be sponsored by HUMC. Linda shares lodging with her mission group at a ranch run by Honduras Outreach. Originally hailing from Grove City, Pennsylvania, Linda met her husband Dave, of 26 years, when they both served as camp counselors during college. In college, she earned her nursing degree and, in between times of being a full-time mom, spent eight years in the field. She then learned that Hillside’s youth minis-ter Steve Brooks was looking for help administering a budding youth program. Almost a dozen years have passed since she chose that path, and Linda hasn’t looked back. Linda and Dave have two grown children-a son, Glen and a daughter, Leanna, who will graduate from North Georgia College in Dahlonega in May. To celebrate the fact that there will be no future tuition payments on the horizon, the Wilsons have booked back-to-back cruises to Italy and Croatia for the fall. Thank you Linda for your many years of dedication and service!

In a Word by Tim Grady

As our fighting men and women return from the war-torn country of Iraq, or on leave from the fighting in Af-ghanistan, we often hear the word “courage”. My own

children have asked me what it meant to be courageous. Some of us think of great acts of heroism, even here at home when someone rushes into a burning house to res-cue another. One definition I have read is, “the quality of mind or spirit

that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear.” The Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines it as, “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” So when my children asked me to help them understand courage, I explained it as follows. Courage is an action or a direction you take despite being scared, frightened or even terrified. It is an action that you know full well puts your life or wellbeing at risk, and you decide to do it anyways. You make a decision, you act, and in that action you are no longer thinking about what you are doing – you are doing something that you will think about later. Every soldier that went into battle displayed courage. Some think they act fearlessly, but I would say they act full of fear that is over-come by their sense of purpose. Every civil rights leader displayed courage. In the Old South, they knew all too well that standing up for their rights as an American might cost them their life. It cost Dr. Martin Luther King his life. It cost Medgar Evers his life. And sadly, to this day, Americans whose skin color happens to be black have to act courageously to break away from gangs, drugs, violence, and lingering racial prejudice. If you are in school and are being bullied, you are somewhere be-tween fear and courage; fear of reprisal if you report it, fear of more bullying if you do nothing, and a deep ache inside you to do some-thing. That ache is courage clamoring to bust out from inside you and right an injustice. And like every soldier, you know all too well that tomorrow you will have to return to the surroundings you feared yesterday. Fifty-Six men signed the document we know as the Declaration of Independence. They knew that, in all likelihood, many of them could be persecuted until they were penniless, and they were right. Yet they also knew they were right about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, so they rose up past their fears and placed their name upon that document. As a result of their courage, and tens of thou-sands of men and women who have defended it with their lives since, we are the freest people upon this Earth. Imagine, two thousand years ago, becoming in individual filled with the conviction that you had to preach a different expression of faith

and belief in a single deity when you didn’t know so much as one other man or woman shared that point of view. Imagine realizing, in your early thirties, that you would be put to death if you contin-ued to teach that faith, discovering that you would be nailed to a cross after being beaten, starved, and forced to carry the cross itself to the place of your death. If you think it helps to be the Son of God, think about all the thousands of men and women who have given their lives for that same belief since then. That takes both conviction and courage. However, not all acts of courage are so pivotal, although nearly all revolve around life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Often times a life or the quality of life hangs in the balance – that of a human, a tree, an animal, or the rights of some living entity, and a champion or defender who comes to their cause, or defends a cause of their own. In almost all cases, courage comes out of con-flict, whether it is a disagreement with words or with weapons (although the pen still is mightier than the sword). Looking for a new job takes courage. Starting and building a busi-ness takes courage. Helping someone off the floor who was knocked down in a stampede takes courage. Helping other people who are in dire circumstances may take courage. In fact, if you look at your past actions, you will likely recall events where you acted courageously, so don’t sell yourself short. Always remember that you are a special being, created in His like-ness, filled with His strengths although we may use them less pow-erfully than He would. So as you face some of life’s adversity when fear is creeping in, allow that ache inside you to come forth and act with courage. There may be a price to pay in doing so – only you can judge if that price is or was worth it. Then, as you can, move forward in your life. Dream bigger dreams, envision greater things – it’s not all about you; it is all about all that you can do, with courage. Tim Grady is a Towne Lake resident, senior strategist, business advisor and public speaker for NetMark International. He also serves as Executive Director for The Wildlife Sanctuary in Ellijay, GA., is Chairman of the Board at Furtah Preparatory School, and sits on the Advisory Council at Papa’s Pantry. It’s February. Possibly some of those “New Year’s health goals “have already fallen to the side. It’s never too late to renew your commitment to a healthier year with simple steps to-wards more activity and a more focused meal plan for you and your family. Every month I will be featuring some seasonal recipes and tips to keep you on track with these goals. What does February bring to mind? Sweethearts, snow, soups and comfort foods… Try these recipes for calorie conscious, tummy warming, high fiber, and delicious foods for this blustery month. If you’ve never tried to cook lentils, this is a great time to try them. They are loaded with fiber, cook quickly, are inexpensive, and blend with many flavors. Soups are great to make in large batches and freeze for a busy day! Winter is the best season to enjoy pears and apples. They are in season and budget friendly in February. Try them baked for a memorable sweet treat on your table. Enjoy!

Cinnamon Baked Apples or Pears (serves 4) 2 fresh pears or apples, unpeeled 2 T brown sugar 2 T quick cooking or old fashioned oats 2 t. butter or margarine, softened ½ t. ground cinnamon (2 T chocolate mini chips, cranraisins or golden raisins, optional) Cooking spray oil 1 c. water plus 1 t. vanilla

Spray baking dish that is just large enough to hold 4 halves of fruit. Blend sugar, oats, margarine, and cinna-mon in a bowl until crumbly. (mini chips or raisins are a nice addition) Cut fruit in half and scoop out seeds and core. Place cut half up in baking dish. Top each fruit half with the oat mixture . Gently pour water blended with vanilla into bottom of pan. Place in 350 degree oven for 35 minutes or until fruit is softened and hot. Serve in a bowl with low fat vanilla yogurt for a creamy topping.

Winter Lentil Soup (serves 8…. some to serve and some to freeze!) 1 package (16 oz) any color dried lentils 4 stalks of celery, diced 4 large carrots, peeled and diced (1 turnip, peeled and diced optional) ½ large onion, peeled and diced 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1 large can of petite diced tomatoes 1 box of low sodium chicken broth (32 oz) 16 oz. of hot water 1 t. Italian herb blend 2 c. chopped spinach, kale, or greens of choice Rinse lentils and remove and debris mixed in the beans. Place all ingredients in large pot. Bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour or until lentils are soft, stir-ring occasionally. Adjust seasoning to taste with salt and pepper. (This can also be placed in a slow cooker on low for 8 hours )

Calling all Pastors, Christian leaders, and Care–Givers

Thursday March 1st from 10-4 at

Church of the Messiah, 415 Charles Cox Drive, Canton 30115

...You can register by calling Pastor Fred Goodwin at 770-579-5280.

Specifically geared towards those in the Christian helping professions, to address the primary areas that

inhibit our abilities to be the best possible stewards of our time and bodies in service to the Lord.

Mission Management- looking uniquely at the stewardship of our time as we consider God’s purposes

vs. the culture’s

The growing body of knowledge about nutrition, considering Food by God vs. Food by Man and how it

impacts health and energy

Living an active life that honors God, considering specific exercise disciplines that enable us to serve at

our peak.

The causes of some unhealthy dynamics, both from the need for detoxification but also into the spiritual

roots of diseases and mindsets.

Taught by well known Woodstock Chiropractor and Wellness Coach, Dr Eric Richards, and facilitated by

Rev Fred Goodwin, CCMA President, we will journey together on an unforgettable path towards a body

and lifestyle that honors the Lord at every level. ..Therefore Honor God With Your Own Body.

1 Corinthians 6:20 Cost for the seminar is $15.00.

Pastors, Ministers, and Christian lay persons are being called to stand in the gap for our high school athletes. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) needs forty-one mentors and leaders to serve as sports chaplains. The FCA is a non-denominational sports ministry, the request comes from the school coaches. Cherokee FCA Director, Bill Queen, said these students need

our help to cope with societal pressures, which are, "out of control and fierce." 1,100 Students in the Cherokee’s schools are participating in the weekly prayer huddles, bible, and character studies with their team’s sports chaplains, through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). The increase in student involvement now exceeds the FCA staff’s ability to minister to these students. As a result, the FCA wants to develop strong relation-ships with local churches to find mentors and leaders to meet this demand. Currently they need 41 chaplains but this could grow. Amy Turcotte, the cheer director for FCA, said that there are even more female sports that may be added to the program. Sports chaplains partner with the our high school Coaches to pray for and encourage athletes, coaches, their families and support staff. Last year 352 children and coaches prayed to receive Christ in our Cherokee schools through the FCA Team Chaplaincy program. Please contact Bill Queen at 404-441-3508, or mailto: [email protected], or Click Here to join FCA's Chaplains Network! The level of Commitment is based on what the coach and the chaplain agree upon. Ezekiel 22:30 ““I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land…”

How many students are in Cherokee County? Answer: 38,761 How many of these students attend a local Church?

Answer: Approx 3,000 How many are left?

The CCMA meets on the last Wednesday of each month for a luncheon from 11:30 am - 1:00 pm at Dayspring @ Java Espresso House. You are welcome to come, Lunch is $5, first time guests free http://www.cherokeeministers.org/
