It s sad that he was wdely read n both Buddhist and nonBuddhst books Schoars such as H Hsüan WG ü

ch€g and w Kai were his good friends. In WG worwe nd a preface to Tsannngs ench , and three poemspresented to h in all of which WG referred to Tsannngsscholastc achievments partcularly the contribution of the aoseng chan In H Hsüans ench there is also a poem presented to Tsanning when he was returning to hs hoe in theSouth. Snce H was famous for hs study of palaeography it nteresting to notce that in this poem he asked Tsanning tond for hi the sele erected by Shhhuang of the hin dynasty

S ÜUGHsiu records a story of Tsanning which would show howtactful he was. When he as a sngu accompanied EmperorTaitsu to the Hsiangkuo Temple in the capital thelatter was hesitating if he should kneel down to pay oeisance toa Buddhas image Thereupon Tsan-ning said The presentBuddha would not pay obeisance before a past Buddha Theemperor was highly pleased and t thus became a rule that theemperor should not kneel before any Buddhist images. - shhha also has a story revealing that Tsanning was witty and quickin reply.
