A Message from the Rector:

CELEBRATING AND SUPPORTING THE LIFE OF ST JAMES’ CHURCH

St James’ has a unique place in the life of the Anglican Church through its various

ministries to the people of the City of Sydney, the state of NSW, and the wider Anglican

Church. This includes engagement with those who work nearby in the legal profession,

parliament and government departments, Sydney Hospital, and many corporate offices and

shops. It especially includes times of crisis both in the life of the city and its people.

We seek to be an open and inclusive Christian community living and sharing the good news

of Christ with all who seek our support, regardless of age, race, sexual orientation or

religion. To this end, the church provides opportunities for worship, welfare support to

needy, pastoral care and counselling, spiritual growth and education, meditation, and our

highly regarded music programme.

Of course, sufficient levels of funding are required to maintain these activities. We

therefore need to look at increasing our giving, both in time and money, so that the

traditions and ministries of St James’ may continue. We currently budget on a need for

around $30 per person per week to maintain the basic pastoral and liturgical ministries of

the parish (not including the upkeep of the building and the special ministries of music and

the Institute).

In the past year there has been a fall in total offertory giving and it is therefore anticipated

that should this continue that the Parish will face a critical financial shortfall that could

threaten our viability. Rather than simply cutback on our activities to address this crisis,

Parish Council believes that we should be looking to grow and attract more people into our

church.

Our strategic plan has identified many new things that we could (and should) do. An

important aspect of this is to develop our ministry with younger people as well as extend

our pastoral care of the elderly. To achieve this, and other growth opportunities, we need to

appoint another ordained person to the pastoral team (as we have had previously) that

would cost the parish around $10 per person per week. I encourage you to pray about this

need and ask yourself if you could help achieve it by increasing your giving.

Regular giving is an important way of thanking God for the benefits we have received in

life, as well as creating a generous and hospitable spirit among us, and ensuring that we

keep up our commitment to supporting the work of Christ through his church. It is for this

reason that we need to review our level of giving and, if not doing so already, make sure

that it happens regularly.

Electronic giving through direct transfer is one of the most effective ways of achieving this.

The following information can be used to make offerings directly into the church account:

Account Name: Churchwardens of St James’ Gen. A/C.

BSB No: 032 007 Account No: 250025

Further information on how to give and/or get involved in the ministry of St James’ is

available from the Parish Office, at the entrance to the church, and on the Parish website. It

only takes a little from many to make a big difference!

Lord of earth and all creation, let your love possess our land: wealth, and freedom, far horizons, mountain, forest, shining sand: may we share, in faith and friendship, gifts unmeasured from your hand.

People of the ancient Dreamtime, they who found this country first, ask with those, the later comers, will our dream be blessed or cursed? Grant us, Lord, new birth, new living, hope for which our children thirst.

Lord, life-giving healing Spirit, on our hurts your mercy shower; lead us by your inward dwelling, guiding, guarding, every hour. Bless and keep our land Australia: in your will her peace and power.

INVOCATION AND WELCOME

Celebrant We gather in worship in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of

the Holy Spirit.

All Amen.

INTRODUCTION

The Rector says,

‘The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it.’ [PSALM 24:1]

We come to give thanks for our land Australia and its peoples, but first we pay respect to the traditional owners of the land on which we meet and worship – the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. It is upon their ancestral lands that St James’ Church is built.

Please be seated. The Rector welcomes the congregation and then continues,

Long before the white man came, the Aborigines inhabited this vast country. They were a people who had lived here for over 40,000 years and whose spirituality was grounded in the environment in which they lived.

When the First Fleet came to Australia, under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, it was accompanied by an Anglican chaplain, The Reverend Richard Johnson. He struggled in his mission to the new colony and was aware of the immense gulf between himself, his convict congregation, and the native peoples..

No spiritual blessing was given at the founding ceremony of the colony of New South Wales, however the first worship service was held under a huge gum tree on 3rd February 1788. The text for the sermon was Psalm 116:12: ‘What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits to me?’. The location of the service is marked by a memorial at the corner of Hunter and Bligh Streets, within this parish.

Since that time, peoples have come to settle here from almost every part of the world. With them has come the Christian faith in its various forms and traditions along with many other faiths. Together we have struggled and succeeded; fought, and enjoyed peace, mourned and celebrated. Through this a heritage has been formed and passed on from generation to generation. We continue to face many challenges, but with the providence of God we can together flourish and make history.

Today we celebrate our nation before God; we confess the wrongs we have done; we give thanks for the good things we have received; and we pray for the needs of our people and for what the future may hold. Let us thank God for all his benefits to us:

Please stand.

All Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free; we’ve golden soil and wealth for toil; our home is girt by sea; our land abounds in nature’s gifts of beauty rich and rare; in history’s page, let every stage advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains, then let us sing,

Advance Australia Fair.

KYRIE ELEISON HAYDN – MISSA SANCTI BERNARDI VON OFFIDA

Please sit as the Choir sings the Kyrie and the altar is censed.

Please stand.

CONFESSION

Deacon Though Christ has called us into one body, the oneness of the peoples of

this land has been broken by acts of oppression and the failure of

compassion.

A silence for self-examination follows.

Let us therefore confess our brokenness, confident in God’s power and

promise to make us whole.

All Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in

thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have

not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours

as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us.

Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus

Christ our Lord. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in

faith, pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in

all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

FIRST READING

A reading from the Book Deuteronomy 28: 1–9

If you will only obey the Lord your God, by diligently observing all his commandments that I am commanding you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth; all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the Lord your God:

Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb, the fruit of your ground, and the fruit of your livestock, both the increase of your cattle and the issue of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading-bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you; they shall come out against you one way, and flee before you seven ways. The Lord will command the blessing upon you in your barns, and in all that you undertake; he will bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in his ways.

A short silence is observed.

Reader For the Word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

PSALM 145: 1–9

Sung by the Choir to a chant by T. Hanworth.

I will magnify thee, O God, my King: and I will praise thy Name for ever and ever. Every day will I give thanks unto thee: and praise thy Name for ever and ever. Great is the Lord, and marvellous worthy to be praised: there is no end of his greatness. One generation shall praise thy works unto another: and declare thy power. As for me, I will be talking of thy worship: thy glory, thy praise, and wondrous works; So that men shall speak of the might of thy marvellous acts: and I will also tell of thy greatness. The memorial of thine abundant kindness shall be shewed: and men shall sing of thy righteousness. The Lord is gracious, and merciful: long-suffering, and of great goodness. The Lord is loving unto every man: and his mercy is over all his works.

SECOND READING

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans 13: 1–8

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except

from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore

whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will

incur judgement. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you wish to

have no fear of the authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive its approval;

for it is God’s servant for your good. But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid,

for the authority does not bear the sword in vain! It is the servant of God to execute

wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be subject, not only because of wrath but

also because of conscience. For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities

are God’s servants, busy with this very thing. Pay to all what is due to them—taxes to

whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due,

honour to whom honour is due.

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has

fulfilled the law.

A short silence is observed.

Reader For the Word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

Please stand.

GOSPEL READING MARK 12: 13–17

Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St Mark.

All

The chief priests, the scribes and the elders sent to Jesus some Pharisees and some

Herodians to trap him in what he said. And they came and said to him, ‘Teacher, we

know that you are sincere, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people

with partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay

taxes to the emperor, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?’ But knowing their

hypocrisy, he said to them, ‘Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius

and let me see it.’ And they brought one. Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and

whose title?’ They answered, ‘The emperor’s.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Give to the emperor

the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ And they were

utterly amazed at him.

PRAYER BOOK TEXT

We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified: under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

HYMN DURING WHICH A COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH’S MINISTRY WILL BE RECEIVED

Christ is made the sure foundation,

and the precious corner-stone,

who, the two walls underlying,

bound in each, binds both in one,

Holy Sion’s help for ever,

and her confidence alone.

All that dedicated city,

dearly loved by God on high,

in exultant jubilation

pours perpetual melody,

God the One, in Threefold glory,

singing everlastingly.

To this temple, where we call thee,

come, O Lord of Hosts, today;

with thy wonted loving-kindness,

hear thy people as they pray;

and thy fullest benediction

shed within its walls for ay.

Here vouchsafe to all thy servants

gifts of grace by prayer to gain;

here to have and hold for ever,

those good things their prayers obtain,

and hereafter, in thy glory,

with thy blessèd ones to reign.

Laud and honour to the Father,

laud and honour to the Son,

laud and honour to the Spirit,

GREAT THANKSGIVING

The congregation is invited to remain standing until the Communion.

Celebrant All glory and honour , thanks and praise, be yours now and always, Lord of

every time and place, God beyond our dreaming. We give you thanks that

from the beginning of time, your Spirit has brooded over this ancient land. In

the fullness of time you revealed your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by

the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death

on the cross and rising to new life, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin, and

obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. We give you thanks that in him

you have revealed to us your presence in the vastness of this land, your love in

its fruitfulness, and your purpose in its cycles of death and renewed life.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we

proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing:

Celebrant Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and

wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink

them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood.

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given

you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This

is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his

disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new

covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as

often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Deacon Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

All

Celebrant Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering

of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and

glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with

this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins

of the whole world.

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and

bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the

fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-

ending praise:

All

The Church bell is rung and then silence is kept.

Baptised Christians from other traditions are welcome to receive Communion. Others are welcome to

come forward to receive a blessing.

You are also advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security.

There are two distribution points for Communion: one at the chancel steps, and one in the baptistry.

If you are at the rear of the nave (near the baptistry) please proceed up the central aisle to the baptistry

for Communion and return to your pews by the side aisles.

If you are in the gallery, please proceed down the stairs to the rear of the nave (near the baptistry)for

Communion, returning to the gallery by the aisle at the rear of the church

We request that people not use the practice of ‘intinction’ at Communion (the practice of dipping the

consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection.

If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one

kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available on request.

COMMUNION MOTETS

During the Communion, The Choir will sing the following motets:

Words: Luke 11: 2b-4 Music: Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924)

Words: Psalm 48 Music: Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934)

Pater noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum: fiat voluntas tua sicut in caelis et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut nos dimittimus debitoribus nostri: et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo. Amen.

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name: thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us: and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness; beautiful in elevation,—the joy of the whole earth,—is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. God hath made Himself known in her palaces for a refuge. For, lo! The kings assembled themselves, they passed by together; they saw; then were they amazed; they were dismay’d, they hasted away; trembling took hold of them there,—pain, as of a woman in travail,—as with the east wind that breaketh the ships of Tarshish. As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. We have thought on Thy loving-kindness, O God, in the midst of Thy temple: as is Thy name, O God, so is Thy praise unto the ends of the earth; Thy right hand is full of righteousness. Let mount Zion be glad, let the daughters of Judah rejoice, because of Thy judgements; walk about Zion and go round about her, tell the towers thereof, mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces, that ye may tell it to the generation following. For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even unto death. Amen.

JOSEPH HAYDN (1732-1809)

Franz Joseph Haydn was enjoying his second extended engagement in England in 1795, composing symphonies and directing concerts, when he received a letter from Nikolaus II, the fourth prince in the famous Eszterházy family, whom Haydn served as Kapellmeister. The Prince requested that Haydn return to Austria to re-establish the Eszterházy orchestra and choir. In addition to the administrative duties required of a Kapellmeister, Haydn was to compose a large-scale Mass each year to celebrate the name-day of his wife, Princess Maria Hermenegild, née Liechtenstein.

Haydn duly returned to Austria and in the summer of 1796 began work on the first of the six great Masses that he was to write to celebrate the Princess’s name-day, one appearing each year until 1802. He knew that both orchestra and choir would be small. Therefore he scored the Mass for an orchestra of strings and organ, with pairs of oboes, clarinets, bassoons and trumpets; he subsequently extended the clarinet parts and added an optional pair of horns. As Haydn was uncertain who would take the solo vocal parts, he gave these soloists a more limited role than in any of the five subsequent Masses, and consequently they were sung by members of the choir.

Missa Sancti Bernardi von Offida ‘Heiligmesse’

The Mass was given its premiere in the Bergkirche, an almost circular Baroque church at Eisenstadt, near the major palace of the Eszterházy family. Although the church is quite modest in size, it has a very large organ gallery which could easily accommodate the choir, orchestra and soloists for which Haydn scored each of his last six Masses. The great Haydn scholar H C Robbins Landon has aptly described these Masses as ‘a continuation of his activity as a composer of symphonies…in their fundamental construction… they are symphonies for voices and orchestra.’ The date on which the Mass was premiered was Sunday September 11, which happened to combine two feast days that year: the feast day of St Bernard of Offida, a Capuchin monk who had been beatified by Pope Pius VI the previous year, and the movable feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary - called ‘Maria Namen’ in German and the occasion when Princess Eszterházy usually observed her name-day. This latter feast always fell on the first Sunday after September 8, the commemoration of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This dual feast-day explains the title of today’s Mass. The celebrations were held over several days and included a season of plays and operas given in the Eszterházy palace by a visiting theatrical troupe. Among the presentations was a performance of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute and a play about King Alfred the Great, for which Haydn composed incidental music.

The Haydn scholar David Wyn Jones has described the Missa Sancti Bernardi von Offida as the ‘most openly tuneful of Haydn’s late masses.’ The symphonic formal structure is obvious from the opening bars of the Kyrie: a slow introduction, as in eleven of Haydn’s twelve ‘London’ symphonies, precedes the main section of the movement. This main section is in modified ternary form, and the main theme is of an almost folk-like simplicity, though it leads quite surprisingly into an impressive fugue. This is broken off by the central Christe section, which is primarily in the minor key and quite short, while the return of the Kyrie material is distinguished by several dramatic general pauses.

The Gloria is also tripartite, as is its opening section; this latter begins in a celebratory style with fanfare-like figures, a calmer and more subdued middle section for the text ‘et in terra pax’, and a return to the fanfare gestures for the closing statements of praise. The central section of the whole movement ‘Gratias agimus tibi’ introduces the soloists: soprano, alto, tenor and bass, who sing primarily as a quartet. This central section is in triple metre, and this metre is retained with the entry of the choir at ‘Qui tollis’ though with a faster tempo. The final section ‘Quoniam tu solus’ returns to the celebratory style, and ends with a double fugue at the words ‘in gloria Dei Patris, Amen’, whose brilliant writing and impressive scale anticipate some of the great choruses in Haydn’ oratorio The Creation, to be composed several years later.

The Credo also begins with fanfare-like gestures: those of a descending arpeggio, which recur throughout this section. The vocal writing alternates unison scoring with harmony – an appropriate musical image of the unity/harmony in faith of the Church’s members. The central section of this movement is justly famous; it begins with a canon for two sopranos and alto, accompanied by pizzicato strings and clarinet, in the key of E flat major. Wyn Jones has described it as ‘a passage of the most elevated beauty.’ The melody of this canon had been composed by Haydn a short while previously for the witty and homely secular text: ‘Gott in Herzen, ein gut Weibschen im Arm, jenes macht selig, dieses g’wiss warm’ (God in the heart, and a good wife/girl in one’s arms, the former makes you blessed, the latter warm). Despite its secular and humorous origin, the melody here appears quite poignant, especially when in the following ‘Crucifixus’ Haydn changes the key to E flat minor and employs a sombre scoring of two tenors and bass, accompanied by the lower strings. The musical material at this point consists of a distillation of the canon. The final section of the Credo recapitulates the festive atmosphere of its opening. Haydn, as was usual for him, underlines the clause ‘Et in unam sanctam catholicam et apostolicam ecclesiam’ (and in one holy catholic and apostolic church) by the adoption of unison writing at this point. The movement ends with a double fugue.

The Sanctus contains the Mass’s second musical borrowing: encased in the tenor line is the melody of the German hymn ‘Heilig, heilig, heilig.’ Haydn identified this borrowing in the margin of the manuscript. As a result, this Mass has the secondary title ‘Heiligmesse.’ This movement is quite short – the second section ‘pleni sunt caeli’ is in triple metre and moves from minor to major tonality.

Page 25: CHORAL EUCHARIST - SJKSsjks.org.au/.../01/WN-28-JANUARY-2018-Orchestral-Mass-III-10am.pdf · Claire Burrell-McDonald Hannah Fraser* Luke Iredale Andrew Fysh ... Brooke Shelley Watson*

The Benedictus begins with an instrumental ritornello in which the clarinet is prominent. It is a particularly beautiful and lyrical movement, with prominent dotted rhythms and relaxed triplet figuration. The ‘Osanna’ functions as a short coda, being based on the same musical material as the rest of the movement.

The Agnus Dei begins in the difficult key of B flat minor (five flats); its opening section is the most impassioned moment in the Mass, being characterized by lovely sighing appoggiatura figures. The final brilliant ‘dona nobis pacem’ is marked by a combination of fanfare figures, dramatic ‘piano’ passages, cross-accents, and fugal writing.

Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) – PATER NOSTER

In 1874 while Charles Villiers Stanford was while already establishing a career and reputation in Britain, began composition and piano lessons as a private student at the famous conservatory in Leipzig. His composition teacher was the famous Carl Reinecke (1824-1910). Stanford’s time was spent productively and it seems that his Pater noster, scored for eight voices, was written as one of his compositional assignments. The work was only published in the late 1990s, and the surviving manuscript bears several corrections that are probably in Reinecke’s hand. As the work’s modern editor Jeremy Dibble comments, the a-cappella style of writing is modelled on that of Mendelssohn, who was very much in favour in Leipzig, as opposed to such dangerous ‘moderns’ as Chopin and Liszt. The gentle lyricism of Stanford’s setting reaches an impressive climax at ‘sed libera nos a malo’, which is distinguished by striking harmonic modulation, before a recapitulation of the opening line of the text and musical phrase lead to an elevated ‘Amen’.

Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) – PSALM 48

Edward Elgar’s setting of Psalm XLVIII Great is the Lord was composed in 1912 and dedicated to a former Dean of Westminster Abbey, Armitage Robinson (1858-1933), by then Dean of Wells. Elgar and met Robinson several years previously and was grateful for theological and historical advice which he had offered him while he was composing his oratorios The Apostles and The Kingdom. The psalm was premiered at Westminster Abbey in July 1912. It is scored for a choir, organ, and bass soloist and can justly be described as grand and Anglican in style. The opening section consists of separate musical phrases for the lower and upper voices, which although at first sung successively, on their repeat indicate that they can be performed simultaneously. The following section employs a variety of choral textures, including a quasi-recitative style, unison writing, and richly-scored harmony, with various changes of mood and key. The bass soloist enters at ‘We have thought on Thy loving kindness’ while at ‘Let mount Zion be glad’ the metre changes to triple and a lighter dance-like section ensues. Antiphonal dialogue is featured in the impressive concluding section.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT? Sometimes parishioners and visitors are puzzled about something to do with some aspect or other of the work of St James’ Church. And then they wonder, ‘How can I find out the answer?’ I have some suggestions: • Keep your Pewsheet so you can look

at it at home. Spare hard copies are

always available in the baptistry and in the Parish Office (Level 1, 169-171 Phillip Street, Sydney).

• Parish Connections may have the answer. Copies are available in the baptistry, Parish Office, and in the foyer of the St James’ Hall (169-171, Phillip Street, Sydney).

• A wealth of information is on our website (sjks.org.au). Use the drop down menus under the appropriate category, e.g. to get to the online version of the Pewsheet, go to Publications and just keep clicking on the date you want! (There are lots of layers in the website – so plenty of information).

CAN YOU HELP? St James’ Church is in urgent need of more people to join the tiny band of brass polishers, who maintain the brass used in services. The job only takes about an hour to complete each time. Furthermore, you would not be required to polish each week, but involvement every 4-5 weeks would be much appreciated. All material needed for this important ministry is supplied. Contact Elizabeth Wyse on 0414 329 478 if you can help. She will also give you more details about what is involved in this valuable work.

ANCHORITES NEEDED Are you someone who is unable to regularly attend services at the church anymore? Or perhaps you know someone who fits this description. St James’ Church is looking for people who are willing to regularly pray in depth for the work of St James’ Church and for its clergy and people. Prayer points would be provided each week to such anchorites. If you are

THE ST JAMES’ FOUNDATION

The St James’ Foundation Ltd. manages two charitable trusts that assist the Parish of St James with its music ministry and the maintenance and preservation of the Church building. The St James’ Foundation is independent of parish control.

The St James’ Music Foundation

The Music Foundation provides financial assistance to the Parish to enable production and performance of:

a. Sacred and secular music with a particular focus on choral and pipe organ music,

b. Sacred and secular dramatic works and artistic performances, and

c. Sacred and secular performances of dance and movement, at or in association with the Parish of St James.

The Music Foundation allows two kinds of donations; those toward current expenditure and those toward capital. Donations toward Current Activities Fund are intended for immediate use. This is the way that people support the Orchestral Masses and other projects. Donations to the capital are invested and the income distributed to the Parish. Donations to the Music Foundation are tax deductible.

St James’ Church Building and Property Foundation

The Building Foundation provides financial assistance to the Parish for: a. The restoration, preservation, maintenance, improvement, enhancement and

upkeep of the church building, its fixtures, fittings and ornaments, and b. The preservation, protection, maintenance, improvement and enhancement of

any property which the Trustee determines is or could be trust property of St James’.

The Building Foundation is principally a capital fund, the income of which is distributed to the Parish. Donations to the Building are not tax-deductible.

Donations and Bequests

These two foundations are vital for the ongoing ministry of the Parish. You are therefore encouraged to consider making either a donation or bequest to them. A brochure giving details of how to do this is available in the Baptistry or in the Parish Office.
